Health Care and the Tea Parties

I just got off a conference call led by Amy Kremer of the National Tea Party Patriots, who said that health care was becoming the focal point of the tea parties. So far, most of the activism on the health care issue has been on the left, led by the group Health Care for Americans Now (a coalition of liberal activist groups and unions). Critics of the tea party movement have argued that there doesn't seem to be any unifying purpose behind the tea parties beyond general disgruntlement with our Demcratic-run government. So, the health care debate will be a good test as to whether the tea party movement can mobilize its grassroots energy around a specific purpose and actually present a counterweight to the well-financed and organized liberal movement.

Right now, it's pretty clear from the health care bills we have already seen that the Democratic leadership wants to push through very liberal legislation, and is willing to ram it through without any Republican support. That means moderate Democrats in both the House and Senate will hold the keys to whether President Obama gets what he wants, and if there is any hopes of stopping a government takeover of health care, lawmakers in conservative states and districts will have to feel the heat from their constituents.

Sen. Jim DeMint, who participated in the call, said that if those opposed to government health care continued to make calls to their representatives and Senators, nothing will get passed before the August recess, at which point there will be more time to expose the legislation for what it is and put more pressure on wobbly lawmakers.

“If we are able to stop Obama on this, it will be his Waterloo," DeMint declared. "It will break him.”

UPDATE: Michelle Malkin has a roundup of some of today's protests.

The Tea Party People (TPP) are seen as whackos who still believe Obama is a Muslim born in Indonesia. They have signs comparing him with Hitler. As long as Republicans associate with these uneducated extremists, the party will get smaller.

So Philip, are you associating yourself with these people????

Ya Bob we would also like to see his birth certificate, his college records, and at least follow the Constitution of the United States. I dont know anyone who holds the views you state but if this guy is supposed to be so smart I will take incompetence any day.

Old Texican| 7.17.09 @ 4:14PM

Hi Brett
Bob has already demonstrated that he is an ignorant uneducated boob here...and an abject liar.
I have lost the links...but one of our commentors (I love to put an o in last sylables), demonstrated clearly that "Bob" is not only an uneducated boob, but is a wholesale liar to boot.

We all just laugh at him now and use our scroll buttons.

By the way, first time I've noticed your handle. Are welcomes in order?

Bob| 7.17.09 @ 4:19PM

Brett, did we have the college records of Reagan, Bush? The birth certificate issue was settled by Factcheck:

http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/born_in_the_usa.html

Factcheck is run by the Annenberg's who are Republicans. Do you have some sort of racial bias that you believe the records of white people but not blacks?

Bob| 7.17.09 @ 4:31PM

Hey, Texican, would you be willing to wager that what I have said about myself is not true? TAS knows who I am and can verify my background in a couple of minutes.

But then again, people like you never want to face the truth. You, and your uneducated brethren are the problem with what's left with the Republican party. I doubt whether you have the integrity to back up your words. Or do you have thin skin like Quin?

I just got back from a Tea Party initiated visit to our local congressman's office.

I believe that constant pressure like this will yield favorable results.

We have a Blue Dog nearby that won by an extremely narrow margin in the next district After the visit today we decided to go to visit his office Monday

I strongly urge everyone to consider dropping whatever they are doing and go to the office of their congressman and senators. ... It is much more effective than the phone.
It was obvious that they don't get a lot of face to face contact..
If they have delegations of citizens showing up in their office every day from now until the break we will stop this unconstitutional monster.

If the phones are ringing off the hook and they are daily face to face with their constituents they will begin to listen.

IF YOU WANT TO DEMAND HEALTH CARE REFORM, YOU BETTER MAKE THAT CALL NOW!

CHOOSING THE USUAL PROFITING INSURANCE COMPANY, OR CHOOSING GOVERNMENT PLAN SHOULD BE UP TO AMERICANS?
The deciding factor in implementing health care for everybody--LEGALLY--in America, is the Publics voice? Those who want to just follow the same old road, can do so with the profit taking commercial insurance. Those who would be satisfied with a government run health care program, can now start demanding it from the lawmakers. Those who see a Universal health care system, similar to most developed countries in Europe, should start informing every Representative and Senate politician starting today. Rationing in places like England, was caused by the major impact of uncontrolled immigration. I see--THE RATS--are coming out of the woodwork, using propaganda and downright lies about government run medical care?

The Special interest lobby, status quo have very wealthy fingers in the pie and do not want Health care for everybody? It's a trillion dollar business like Cancer treatments. The pharmaceutical companies, AMA and others have very much to lose? Even many corrupt politicians are stockholders in this behemoth money machine. Most American working class can do--without-- high premiums, pre-existing condition clauses. deductibles, co-pays that is representative of the wealthy medical care insurers. CALL YOUR SENATOR OR REPRESENTATIVE ! Whatever pertains to your family, you should start ruffling the indifferent feathers of the people in Washington at 202-224-3121 Just like illegal immigration , we cannot afford anymore to subsidize the business that hire them or the millions of illegal families.

I used to post as Bob| 7.17.09 @ 5:45PM

I have been to a number of Tea Party meetings now and find them to be invigorating. At each event I have seen a large numbers of people from a wide cross section of ages and background.
It is inspiring to see so many willing to take time from work or give up a holiday as they did on the 4th to come out and celebrate their love of country. I think there was something to the criticism that other than gathering there was not a lot of action.
Our local group put a lot of effort into gathering contact info on the 4th and today’s action was an outgrowth of that. The notification I received was part of a nationally coordinated effort.
We are a bit behind the curve of the rent a mob and paid union members but I think given that the tea party folks in general come from the productive half of society we will make up that gap rather quickly.
Contrary to the impression wish for by detractors I think the Tea Party movement is picking up momentum.
Every time they pass another 1000= page takeover in the middle of the night without reading it our numbers grow. It is really hard to imagine any ration thinking person who could honestly be in favor of legislating this way.

Bob, so that was you with the Hitler sign at the Chicago tea party which the fired CNN newslady pointed out.

Ellen K| 7.18.09 @ 1:05AM

It's always amusing when liberals come on conservative websites with these preordained assumptions regarding the members of the Tea Party movement. First, I don't particularly pay attention to the whole "birth certificate" issue although it seems a bit strained on the President's part. I don't think he's Muslim although a child's early training does tend to endure throughout life and he was a child in Indonesia in an Islamic school. But really for what it's worth, this isn't a fight about the President's personal history, it is about his political history as one of the most liberal senators in history and a man who has befriended people who were and are domestic terrorists. His rise was precipitous and in Chicago that is pretty much a clear sign of internal manipulations in the process. I think he and his honchos in Congress are systematically moving American toward a socialist paradigm and are determined to take over most industries-that's worked so well for France. And to do so they will limit our use of abundant domestic resources in order to make themselves look good at international conferences even though NOBODY ELSE IS PLAYING ALONG. In short, this man's administration has the power to absolutely bring this economy to its knees. As someone who is struggling to make it with just one paycheck in the family-mine-I don't know where the hell they think we can afford more taxation. I am increasingly sick and tired of liberals telling me how good it will be and how great I should feel. Frankly I feel tired and I feel scared and I don' t think I am alone.

Patriot| 7.18.09 @ 1:52AM

You're not alone, Ellen--stay connected, okay? Like my mom used to say, "There's safety in numbers."

You're smart, too, and you express yourself well--keep speaking up.

I agree that conservative/moderate Democrats will no doubt feel the political heat and join Republicans in stopping, not only THIS healthcare but ALL present and future [wealth redistribution] legislation by this socialist-in-charge!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bob| 7.19.09 @ 1:27PM

Oldfarte, as a fiscal conservative, I strongly agree with you on this one. When the objective was to reduce costs, I strongly supported it. Now that the objective has, de facto, changed, I cannot.

First, they need to strongly attack the cost issue through tort reform, equalization of taxation of health benefits, outcome based payments, and the realization that you cannot have any system without some type of rationing.

Furthermore, I've always said here that given my experience in business, these things are so complicated that you cannot ever predict the outcome successfully. That's why I like a "test market" approach where we take the best Democrat plan and the best Republican plan, implement them in a few test states, and then measure the outcome. I don't think the current Democrat plan will reduce costs and I don't think the current Republican plan will increase access and that while it will slightly reduce costs, it won't be anything to write home about.

I'd like to see the best aspects of both plans, but given the politics on BOTH sides, that will never happen.

Songbird| 7.19.09 @ 2:27PM

RINO Bob, fiscal conservative who lives to wear Obama kneepads, how do you feel about Obama's coming 15% unemployment numbers?

Bob| 7.19.09 @ 4:31PM

Extremist Songbird, several months ago on this board when the stimulus bill was passed, I said I expected unemployment to reach double digits in the range of 11% or so. I never thought Obama's estimate of 8% was realistic. The unemployment curve of the Great Depression was far longer. Again, you will see us technically out of the recession by the end of the year, beginning of next. Since jobs are a lagging indicator, you won't see jobs increase until the Spring/Summer of 2010. There is no way that an economy can turnaround any faster.

By the way, if you've read my stuff, you'd see that I was a Romney supporter. If he got the nomination, I would have voted for him. There is no way I could have supported McCain after he chose Palin. Please get your facts straight.

SongBird| 7.19.09 @ 7:06PM

Facts straight? You claim to be a fiscal conservative who voted for Obama; so how are my statements wrong? Or are you just lying once again? You lie so much you can't remember your lies. Liar.

StokeyBob| 7.19.09 @ 7:40PM

Good job TEA Partiers!

Did you ever wonder where the money for things like the subversion of the world's immigration laws may come from? Also, recently I’m seeing an ad campaign, using money we don’t have, to sell us on a new health plan.

It seems to me as long as we allow people to print up fiat money there will be no place in the world where freedom can flourish.

If the Globalist oppose your efforts, paid for with real hard earned money, all they have to do is fire up the presses and shovel the money to any group that will oppose you.

Not only that but it seems they do it in such a way that the money to achieve THEIR goals is borrowed from them. Then we pay interest to a group outside of our country, like the Federal Reserve, on the creation and borrowing of OUR OWN money.

IN ESSENCE THEY BEAT US WITH OUR OWN STICK!

Lorenzo Suarez| 7.20.09 @ 2:53AM

Is this the headquarters of the "no" party?

Smitty| 7.20.09 @ 3:36AM

Headquarters of the " NOBAMA" Party to be exact, moron.

Caseoftheblues| 7.20.09 @ 9:13AM

HEY BRITIANICUS.....guess what... in the Healthcare reform you appear to be pushing Illegals WILL be included in it. Yup that's right...I sat there and watched on CSPAN during the Senate Commitee mark up meeting where a Republican Senator asked why the language had been changed where previously a person applying to get free healthcare would have to prove legal status with documentation...now all they have to do is check a box saying I AFFIRM I am eligible. That's it! Literally nothing else will be required! So that rationed 2nd rate healthcare mess in Europe you ascribed to massive immigration costs....coming to a city near you...thanks so much for your support of this that is helping to scr@w us all!!!

Phillip L.| 7.20.09 @ 9:20AM

Just read a great analogy of this healthcare disaster......think of it as homelessness....a tragic problem that we do need to address...well here is the governments plan ...Because some people are homeless ALL Americans will be forced out of their homes and into Government Housing. Some might get to keep their homes for a few years during the transition but ultimately ALL Americans will be living in the Housing Projects, because they are bulldozing everyone's former home. Please note: Congress has exempted themselves from this and they and their families get to keep living in their homes. What genuises we have in Congress!!!!

Joe| 7.24.09 @ 12:41PM

The Hitler comparison is not all that far out as you might think. The theology of Obama's church of 20 years is not orthodox Christian theology, but has striking parallels to a black version of 'Positives Christentum', the doctrine that the Nazis tried to force on the evangelical churches in Nazi Germany. J. Wright said read the books by Jame H. Cone to understand the Black Liberation Theology of TUCC. I did and it is obviously a racist, nazi-like theology.

JOYCE| 7.24.09 @ 3:10PM

I have been reading everyone's comments and the only thing I find troubling are the childish remarks by some. Look - we all have to look at reality -- What is it?
Obama -- has illiegally become owner of GMC [ which I do not know why he is not being impeached on that one]
-- stimulus bill -- who's paying for it -- US
-- Health care bill -- who will be paying for it and will we still be able to before we all die waiting for our doctor's that Obama has set up for us. We will pay with our lives on this one.
--- cap and trade -- who will be paying for this disaster bill -- anyone who is using energy -- US

Are we all getting this ??
