The Spectacle Blog

These columns are more about Obama's speech than about Cheney's, but both are absolutely on target, with great insights. My hat is off to my friend Jed Babbin of Human Events for this one,

Key lines:

President Obama wants to de-legitimize criticism of his ideas. He insists that those who disagree with the closure of Gitmo -- or say that thousands of lives were saved because three terrorists out of the hundreds we captured were waterboarded -- are betrayers of our Constitution.

Several times, he referenced the “fear-mongering” and climate of fear he says propels the debate on closing the terrorist detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He says we are ill-served by words that are “calculated to scare people rather than educate them.”

Perhaps he was thinking of the words spoken by FBI Director Robert Mueller on Wednesday. Pushed to agree that Gitmo detainees could be kept safely in U.S. prisons, Mueller demurred.

Mueller said that the FBI had grave concerns about Gitmo detainees being brought into the US: “The concerns we have about individuals who may support terrorism being in the United States run from concerns about providing financing, radicalizing others," as well as "the potential for individuals undertaking attacks in the United States."

And my  hat is off to Jay Cost of RealClearPolitics for this one.

Key lines are that Obama's habit of "ad hominem" attacks on those who disagree with him "obliterates any notion that the President is treating his interlocutors with the presumption of good faith. He says he is, but the rest of his speech doesn't follow through - which makes the initial assertion sound like haughty, hypocritical moralizing."

Read both columns in full. Good stuff.

(Sigh)...Thank you again, Quin

You just keep on keeping on...thinking about the truth.

You and I have put ourselves on all the lists of people to be silenced.

My very best friend for all of my adult life tells me that I must have a "martyr"
complex..."...and that isn't wise".
Darn it, Quin, I am tired of being wise!
Right in these days, our country is being dissolved right beneath our feet. O's domestic/economic policies are ripping the guts out of our economy, and his foreign policy is ripping the guts out of our ability to protect ourselves and our allies.

I hope you have read my comment on the "Cheny indiscretions" article. Mr. Cheny was on the opposite side of the negotiations table from me...but we worked out a plan to get the darned project completed...on time...and profitable for all concerned. (That guy is really smart! Grin!)

(Oh my...I used that horrible word "profitable"). Aww to heck with it, New Testament: "What doth it profit a man, to gain the world ...and lose his soul".

Darn it! Profit is not a dirty word!

We have a hell of a mess on our plate here, Quin.
Thank you for your courage.
Ken

Quin's [and others'] REASONING concerning Obama is intellectual and accurate, in a debate sense; but the essential POINT is missed. Before the 11/4/08 election, I stated that Obama represented a TROJUN-HORSE political candidate, in that he would say/do anything, or appear as anything, if same would clandestinely mask his true self and succeed in getting him elected. Pre-election, he was a moderate candidate, and now, he is a radically-liberal President. He no longer has the need to disguise himself, for he has WON [as he likes to inform his adversaries]. He [and liberals] do not care about the Constitution, morality,etc-----they simply use these as weapons in arguing their [true] political positions. He wants to weaken America, not make it stronger; so he uses the standard liberal line about torture and right/wrong morality. He/they defend those who attempted to destroy us on 9/11/01; instead of defending our government and its [then] political and military leaders who were attempting to protect and save us from destruction by these terrorists. It's honorable and noble to argue [in debate fashion] as to his/their reasons for their positions; but the bottom line is that he [Obama]/they [liberals] are simply DEFENDING OUR ENEMIES---so WHAT DOES THAT MAKE THEM??????

Obama's "ad hominem attacks"?

Give me a break.

Ad hominem? Obama?

That is simply inaccurate. The man is attacked day in and day out, around the clock, by fools like YOU who call him a "fascist" and accuse him of "paling around with terrorists," but HE is guilty of ad hominem attack?

No sir. Perhaps you should brush up on your Latin.

Murphy, perhaps you should observe Wikipedia's definition [".......Ad hominem argument is most commonly used to refer specifically to the ad hominem abusive, or argumentum ad personam, which consists of criticizing or attacking the person who proposed the argument (personal attack) in an attempt to discredit the argument. It is also used when an opponent is unable to find fault with an argument, yet for various reasons, the opponent disagrees with it...."], and therafter, stop making yourself appear to be IMBECILIC!!!!
