Sen. David Vitter (R-Louisiana) tried to stand up for civil
society and taxpayers last week but his effort was shot down by
liberal Democratic senators.
Vitter tried to prevent the radical direct-action group, ACORN,
and its affiliates from benefitting under the odious national
service legislation known as the (proposed)
GIVE Act. The bill itself, which received
a glowing review from John Podesta’s pro-Obama propaganda
factory, the Center for American Progress, would give government
money to volunteer programs and would dramatically expand the
feel-good liberal program, AmeriCorps, which ACORN and other
groups have used
to promote their own political objectives.
Vitter’s amendment to the bill known as HR1388 would
have prevented ACORN from receiving funding under the legislation
and from participating in any program authorized by it
involving the use of government-sponsored volunteers.
Vitter noted in a
press release that ACORN is
currently under federal investigation, and this is simply not
the sort of organization that should be funded by taxpayer
dollars. Although this bill prevents the use of funds for
political activities, a loophole exists that would
allow volunteers sponsored by the federal government to work on
behalf of ACORN, freeing up ACORN workers to engage in
voter registration activities. The fact that ACORN has been
caught engaging in a number of suspect activities is of even
more concern. [emphasis added]
On the Senate floor March 26, Vitter explained further, saying of
his amendment:
It says no money under this program could go to ACORN or any of
its affiliates. Although it is about that one organization, I
think the amendment goes to the heart of this debate.
A lot of us are concerned this bill could politicize and put
too much Government involvement in charitable work across the
country.
Some folks may like ACORN, other folks may not, but nobody can
argue that ACORN isn’t at its core political and ideological.
It should not get money under this program. The language in the
bill that says you can’t do political activity with the money
clearly isn’t good enough, because ACORN and other very
political and ideological groups would simply have charitable
offshoots that could accept the money and be underwritten
indirectly in that way.
Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Maryland), long a friend of
ACORN, objected. She made a motion to kill
Vitter’s amendment, saying “I think this is an amendment that has
no purpose and [sic] has Draconian consequences if passed.”
Senators agreed, voting 53 to 43
to kill the amendment. The only Democratic senators to vote
with Vitter were Robert Byrd of West Virginia and Ben Nelson of
Nebraska.
The original version of HR1388 passed by the House contained
an amendment offered by Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-North Carolina)
that
prohibited organizations involved in “engaged in political or
legislative advocacy” from receiving funding.
But two
left-wing pressure groups distorted Foxx’s amendment and
demanded its removal. “The First Amendment protects against
speech restrictions such as those in [this] amendment,” said OMB
Watch. The Center for Lobbying in the Public Interest
said Foxx’s amendment was “anti-nonprofit” and
“anti-democratic,” and added that “civic participation is the
touchstone of American democracy.”
Of course, their arguments were nonsense because groups are not
required to take funding from the government, but Sen. Mikulski
did ACORN’s bidding,
filing a substitute bill in the Senate that took
out Foxx’s provisions. The bill was approved by the Senate
on
a 79 to 19 vote.
The bill could be revisited by the House at any time and soon be
on its way to President Obama’s desk for his signature.

What a friggin' joke. Of course the democrats are going to generously fund ACORN: They are the enforcement arm of the demo party. Brown Shirts, if you will. Democrats don't intend to ever lose another important election again. Blind if you don't see it.

learn to read idiot the bill is about people in AmeriCorpss working for Acorn. Funny you rednecks dont want poor people to vote, WHY is that. Isnt the Democratic process for everyone?
Kate| 3.31.09 @ 7:12AM
Jeffery, we'd be fine with the ACORN money if an equal amount went to the NRA for "get out the vote" activities. Rednecks ARE generally poor people by the way. Funny how liberals don't mind using my tax payer dollars to elect people that want to take away my freedoms and furthermore to cheat in order to achieve this. There is no integrity or dignity on the left. Liars and cheaters the lot of them.
Don L| 3.31.09 @ 8:20AM
And exactly where in the constitution is ACORN or any other acronym a valid part of the political structure of this nation? To Kelo(if need be) money from folks to pay for their own destruction certainly wasn't the intent of our forefathers. Supreme Court decisions be damned. It is near time to stop the over throw of family and God and start ignoring those men in black robes who provide for such. They are just politicians who have been cursed with law degrees anyways.
Polarik | 3.31.09 @ 8:47AM
The language of HR 1388 prevents all members of Americorp and the other dozen of "new Corps" expressly prohibit any activity of a political nature. It strips away basically all 1st Amendment rights of those forced to join and provide "community service." It also violates one's 13th Amendment rights
The ultimate irony -- make that unconscionable action -- is giving $billions to ACORN to politically indoctrinate the youth in the ways and means of the Obama Socialist Republic..

ACORN isn't about "poor people," it's about power. It's about revolution from within al a Saul David Alinsky who taught people such as our president that our own institutions can be subverted to "change" this country into a socialist dictatorship. You may not have a "secret ballot" in 2010...you may have a "card check." The handwriting is on the wall; Obama is riding a white horse and ACORN...founded by SDS...as was the Weather Underground...holds the reins.

It is not surprising that Feinstein and Boxer supported ACORN. They also supported Hilda Solis foir Labor Secretary. Who's long been in the tank for the labor unions and "card check".The confirmation hearings on Solis was predetermined by Ted Kennedy and his associates. Hilda Solis is just what the Labor unions and the Hispanic lobbyist wanted. It was payback to the unions and the Hispanic lobbyist by Feinstein and Boxer. I am sorry I did not justify my use of the word "incompetence" in the previous statement. Our elected leaders are showing their incompetence in that they are not performing the duties they were elected to perform. Please show me a pole or provide any other result that shows that they are truly performing their duties at the will of their constituents (US). They are not! They are circumventing the Constitution and BoR's to show us "THEY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING" and abusing power that they do not, SHOULD NOT have. Again, I say they are Incompetent. They are ARROGANT in the fact that they shove their legislation, laws, and beliefs to the American people without pause to consider the effect and will of their constituents. Democrats Kill Provision in AmeriCorps Bill that Would Keep Funds from ACORN - 401KU links to this page. Here’s an excerpt:
Wake Up | 3.31.09 @ 4:06PM
Wake Up America!!! The Democrats have taken over and are running the country into the ground with every socialist program known to man, attempting to pass it off as a stimulus. Obama has signed 6 Bills without reading or allowing Taxpayers to read (transparency?), Gibson (can‘t form a sentence without, ‘UM’ thinking of the next lie?), Dodd (I knew…I didn’t know about AIG?), Pelosi (“illegal’s are true Americans”?).
Obama, a man that has no record of publications while attending two prestigious colleges (who paid?), no voting record on substantive issues (except late term abortions) in neither Illinois politics nor while in the U.S. Congress (voted present). A corrupt election, with people voting multiple times, sometimes in different states. Money (hundreds of millions) coming in from all around the world that went unaccounted (investigation?). A group of people, (ACORN), that were paid by Obama’s campaign to knock on doors or protest Republican rallies but most are unable to work full time, normally collecting a government check. Obama, someone that no one knew a few years ago comes out of nowhere to become President of the U.S.A., who is his puppet master (George Soros, Organized Crime?). Now Obama has put money in a bill that will repay ACORN for their vote, as well as repay GE (NBC, CNBC, MSNBC) with government money from the ‘Green Bank’ (future government bank).
People need to wake up and watch what is going into these bills that Obama and the Left are passing. ACORN, AIG, GM, Fannie, Freddie are just part of the problem. Read the Bills coming out of Washington because the Democrats are putting things in the bill that are scary if Obama’s plan comes together (One World Government?). Watch some of these bills; HR645 Authorizes @ Legalize 6 FEMA camps in the event of a mass disaster or civil unrest, DOD Directive 1410.04 Authorizes a civilian military (ACORN maybe ?) that is trained and funded as well as the U.S. Armed Forces, HR1022 Ban on Assault Weapons (Eric Holder likes this bill), HR45 background checks and psychological test when purchasing weapons (government doctors?) and the Fairness Doctrine (not allowing the Right to talk about what is going on in this country). Some of these bills are good ideas when you read them alone but put them together with what is going on in this country / world, it could be dangerous.

He has concealed and continues to conceal his school, medical, political funding records, plus the fact his certificate of life birth from Hawaii means nothing except that he was born and registered in Hawaii ~ the big question is when?
We, the people, have been had big time. And no, I did not vote for him because of the baggage he is connected with.

We need term limits for Congress in the worst way. One term (6yr) for senators and two (2 yr terms) for representatives. Disolve their pension that we pay for as taxpayers and take the monies and deposit them into Social Security. Make Congress pay Social Security like we do and if the members want another pension let them invest their own personal money into a 401 (k) or a IRA, just like we have too.
We need to elect to members of congress who will represent our needs not their own.
Capt. Chaos| 3.31.09 @ 5:14PM
Hanna ---Right behind you with that thought. In fact, I dare everyone who is reading this to start polling their respective legislators to find someone who is willing to draft a bill to introduce term limits. It is not impossible, the hard part is getting someone like that to recognize that they would be subject to them. They all enjoy having some power, and glowing in the light of their individual districts. But....I dare all of you to go do it. Let's see if we can make this a national movement, again.
Dave | 3.31.09 @ 5:19PM
The problem with this story and each of the comments that follow it is that there really are no allocations of funds to ACORN anywhere in any stimulus package. I challenge anyone to find it and post it. That makes this whole story worthy of deleting.

I wholeheartedly agree with the person who said that Team Obama knows what they are doing - what is so sad is that his followers don't really care. They sold out our nation for a handful of silver. My grandchild who is due in September will be burdened with a $22,000 (or more by that time) when he takes his first breath. This president is shameful and evil and so are the members of ACORN who put him there. I like the Tea Party idea but I would like it better if all Americans would simply stop paying their taxes - Washington D.C. would come to a screeching halt. This would work because most people who voted for this creep are dependent on the people who work and pay taxes. What say you, America?????

We need to look at what has happened to the original idea of this country. I think we lock up more people that are non dangerous than any country in the world. It's a business and it generates bad feelings and puts people together with other people who spread toxic thinking and anger. The writing is on the wall. Acorn, a tool of the Democratic Party, is going to help with the census. The world must be amused by the state of our governing...Congress has truly made a mess of everything! If it wasn't so serious and dire, it would be humorous...here we have Barney Frank interrogating Mr. Liddy, of AIG, a man with dignity, working for $1.00 and not with AIG when it started to take a downturn. Here we have Barney treating Mr. Liddy like dirt...when, it was Congress who voted to pass the Bill (without reading it's contents) which allowed for the paying of the AIG bonuses. I hope that Fannie and Freddie payout their bonuses and this blows up in Barney's face. It will be difficult and tiring if he has to go from one side of the table to the other side. It was Fannie and Freddie and the Reinvestment Act passed by Congress signed by President Clinton that started the downfall of the economy. Barney Frank and Christopher Dodd were several of those in the Congress who enabled the economic dive.

The Bilderberg Group, Bilderberg conference, or Bilderberg Club is an unofficial annual invitation-only conference of around 130 guests, most of whom are persons of influence in the fields of politics, business and banking. Ever wonder who is pulling the strings behind congress or any politicians? You asked for the information and here it is. I disagree with it I think I am more powerful then any of these guys simply being an American with principles and concerns and my vote counts. I hope our tax money isn't really pushing for special interest, but so far my hopes are frailed by reality. Well here is the report you all asked for: http://www.theidolworld.com/blog/blog

King Obama and jesters Reid and Pelosi are fully intent on changing America as we know it. The army is being put together and we are setting on the sidelines being polititcally correct the whole time. No one seems to have noticed the bus loads of ACORN nuts riding to Orlando for their checks? Really? No one has noticed the direct payment for votes? Really?
I have noticed a large number of these ACORN nuts are people of color. Is that just my own prejudice or is it reality? If it is reality, is it prejudice? If you are a democrat, need a political group to work for you that you can manipulate on and on, with a few of the taxpayers dollars, and get the loyalty of a lap dog, as they have, and not have to worry about any of them having enough sense to recognize how they are being duped, why not? It sure seems to be working.
So how do conservatives come together and make a difference? Do we get our own man of color to lead us so we can show how PC we are? Oh, we did that. Maybe if we put up a presidential candidate that politically is identical in 75% of his thoughts to the leading democrat, that would work for us. No, I think we did that too.
We must come together as political conservatives, melting pot Americans NOT diversity hyphonates. We need to find or be leaders that aren't afraid of media bias or PC bunk. Reality will win over perception but it must be consistent.
Keep your powder dry.

Oh, if we can survive until 2010. I would like to see all elected Republicans pack their cars and leave Washington, since they can do nothing there. I always consider the possibility of drowning better than treading water for days or weeks. The result is the same, but so much easier.
My hats off to Obama, the Dems, and ACORN. Maybe the conservatives should learn and try to steal every election there is, with no conscience off a moral compass. I place the Dems right beside the Islamic terrorists, both intent on bringing down America, and I am sad to say, looks like they are on their way to victory.
Obama & the Democratic Congress SUCK !!!!
May they all rot in HELL !!!!
