I for one am still very proud of the infrastructure that IS without question the envy of the rest of the world. I don't give a rat's behind about what ANYONE in the rest of the world thinks about my county, I've seen theirs (and defended it), I'll believe my government is broke when I can't pass a U.S. Dollar at any given international airport and the people who run the markets, the "the Masters of the Universe" as you say, are me and everyone else like me who are still getting up every morning and going to work and who are not standing in a welfare line with their hand out.
