The Spectacle Blog

Jennifer Rubin calls our attention to the exasperation of New York Daily News columnist Michael Goodwin:

Who is this guy? Where is the Barack Obama who charmed the country and challenged it to greatness?

Campaigning is tough, but governing is infinitely harder. Remember when first Hillary Clinton, and then Republicans, tried to point out that Obama had no executive experience, had never really shown leadership in his legislative jobs, et cetera? Now his deficiencies are hurting him every day. The White House has many advantages, but it's not a very good place to hide.

Actually, President Obama had quite a leadership role in the Illinois legislature. He is credited with having ended roadblocks on important bills by mediating across party lines, much as he has sought to do in seeking bipartisan support for the stimulus package. Lying about the president will not change the fact that he IS the president, as much as that surely bothers a neo-Confederate.

Roy Cone| 2.9.09 @ 1:13AM

The Illinois general assembly is a much different place than the White House. Anything Obama did as an Illinois state senator is insufficient executive experience to qualify him to be POTUS.

A Balrog of Morgoth| 2.9.09 @ 2:13AM

Yes, the standardbearer of the neo-Copperheads IS president. OK, now be a president already. Sloganeering and a victory lap is not leadership.

Interloper| 2.9.09 @ 4:20AM

President Obama qualified for POTUS by winning the election. His prior experiences are varied - from community organizer, to law prof, to politician, to successful memoirist. He did well with all of them and the variety appears to give him helpful insights. One reason the world is taken with President Obama is that he brings gifts not typical of politicians.

jack| 2.9.09 @ 6:27AM

this is the same guy. he has no experience at anything. OK,if you want a guy to read a audio novel, you found your man. If you want a guy to give out smokes for votes on Chicago street corners, you found your guy but President of the US? You have to be kidding. Most sensible Americans with an IQ over 80 knew the momemt he championed proper tire inflation as a way to end our dependentcy on mid east oil, this guy did not have the acumen for the job. Or my fav, saying Russias invasion of Georgia was not in the Olympic spirit. Huh?
Obama and the sewer rat Emanuel are products of the only political system in the world more corrupt than Washington,Chicago. He has never authored a bill or introducted one and was rarely in attendance in Senate. Is it any wonder he gave the task of crafting the stimulus to Pelosi? He has no idea how you do it,that is clear.
Pray,buy gold,and pray more.

Put down the shovel!
Obama 's "leadership" in the IL Senate consisted of Emil Jones taking legislation away from the folks who did the heavy lifting and attaching Obama's name on said legislation. Of course, Obama made really tough choices by voting "present" often. What is this bi-partisanship you are talking about? He doesn't need the GOP to pass any of his "leadership" measures.

You folks on the Left desire Obama to be JFK. One difference; JFK wote books about foreign policy and profiles in courage, whereas, Obama wrote books about himself.

If this were a beauty pageant, you may have a case. However, we are talking about being POTUS.
"... brings gifts not typical of politicians"? You honestly need to begin all of your posts with "Once upon a time".

Put down the Kool-aid!

Obama leaving the WH for the campaign trail again today. Doing what he does best. But if he is the campaigner in chief, who is the chief Executive?

genghis| 2.9.09 @ 9:11AM

Blago would've been a better choice. Obama is clueless. Then again, so are his ardent supporters. you get what you pay for.

Interloper| 2.9.09 @ 9:52AM

LOL! It would have done George W. Bush a great deal of good to leave the White House and meet with the people sometimes. But, he hunkered down, rarely even having press conferences. I think it's wonderful that President Obama is willing to do whatever it takes to have an open, transparent democracy instead of showing the public similar disdain.

The process of 'selling' his plans actually began before the inauguration when the transition website, morphed from mybarackobama.com, became a nexus for setting up neighborhood meetings to discuss the president's policy proposals. Millions of Americans have been meeting in each others homes to develop ideas. We welcome the president also being willing to come to some of us.

I happen to have come to AS from a TED site this time. The contrast between what was occurring there - discussion of the ideas and innovations presented at the conference - and the hostility to thought evidenced here is striking. One of the themes of TED this year is the way individuals can save energy through small, but collectively significant, actions, an example of which is being ridiculed at AS. I doubt anyone interested in TED is so ignorant he or she believes that President Obama's relationship to his books is merely reading the audio versions, either. If there are more open, knowledgeable minds in American in four years, that alone will be a huge achievement for this administration.

Thomas| 2.9.09 @ 11:20AM

Ah so, President Obama is such a mensch. Interloper is right, the President, in an effort to spread the wealth of public satisfaction to the Republicans as well as the Democrats, is going out of his way to court bipartisan support for the stimulus bill, even though the Dems can pass it with the support of only a single Republican senator. He is so noble. And let us not forget about the most ethical and transparent Presidential administration of all time. Not only have several lobbyists been appointed to the administration but at least three very high ranking officials, two of whom were cabinet level posts, were criminals [tax evasion is a crime, just in case anyone has forgotten]. And transparency, there are currently three lawsuits underway to force the government to reveal how much money has already been dispensed in the fiscal rescue bills and to whom.

As for Barack Obama winning the election, there is still some doubt that he is even qualified to be President, which, if proven to be accurate, will render his election moot, but create a crisis in this country that will dwarf any but the Civil War.

Now, I know how the liberal supporters of Barack Obama feel. After all, the conservative supporters of George W. Bush went through the same thing for eight years. The only advice I can give you is don't drink the koolaid.

As for conserving power, what has happened to this country in the last fifty years? It used to be that if we didn't have enough of something, we produced more. In the richest, most technologically advanced nation in the world, why would anyone willingly choose to live like a Muscovite of the 1990's?

I fear for the future of a nation where a significant number of people refuse to work to solve their own problems. To the current Presidential administration, I can only say good luck. To the rest of us, I can only saw watch out, you ain't seen nothin' yet.

Crusader| 2.9.09 @ 11:32AM

"Transparency?" This guy won't even release his birth certificate. Transparency my arse.

John| 2.9.09 @ 11:34AM

The One reminds me of a guy nonchalantly driving his hooptie along the road... no signals.. bad tires... blown head gasket... blithely tooling along oblivious to the choking blue cloud of smoke that is is obscuring the view of the drivers behind him.

As the accidents mount and his car stops in the middle of the road. His engine seized up for lack of oil. He sits at the wheel, pressing the gas pedal, staring out over the hood waiting for something to catch and his car will move on.

Those in the pileup and traffic jam are left behind him strung out for miles in a cloud of choking blue smoke and anger...

The picture of Clueless...

Do I espy one of those conspiracy theorists who (wink/nod) knows that the president of the United States was born in Kenya, hatched in a laboratory or is a secret visitor from an alternative universe? Say it ain't so! Tell me that in 2009, we don't have Americans so incapable of accepting the reality of an African-American president that they delude themselves with bizarre fantasies in which Barrack Obama is not the president. Finish that reassurance by letting me know that no one so out of touch with reality would think himself knowledgeable or dare offer advice to others.

Interloper| 2.9.09 @ 11:43AM

Egads! It appears that one conspiracy moonbat was an understatement. They seem to be sticking their periscopes up from their bunkers one behind the other. What next? Will the words 'socialist, communist and radical' make appearances? Say it ain't so Joe (the Plumber, one of the far Right's "reliable sources.") With adherents such as these, the GOP is doomed to a long time in the wilderness, beating its collective chest and declaring victory. Mass delusions are like that.

Reagan's Ghost| 2.9.09 @ 11:54AM

The Obamunist is a doper/commie who hangs out with radical racists cop-killers, and terrorist bombers. He beats even Slick Willie for basic lowness. Elections have consequences, and dufuses like Interloper won't have to eat the crap sandwich only because he is a parasite, and lives off the backs of workers.

furious| 2.9.09 @ 12:17PM

Either Obamessiah needs to nominate candidates who are competent enough to navigate TurboTax, or his Treasury Dept. needs to dumb-down the tax code so even His nominees can understand it.

Real leadership involves making choices, not voting "present".

Thomas| 2.9.09 @ 1:06PM

Interloper,

"Tell me that in 2009, we don't have Americans so incapable of accepting the reality of an African-American president that they delude themselves with bizarre fantasies in which Barrack Obama is not the president."

Okay, I don't think that you'll find anyone like that here. Most, if not all, of the conservative posters to this blog seem to be neutral as far as race is concerned. I, for one, have no interest in the race or gender of the POTUS. I do care about the rule of law and the consequences of violating it. And I care about the character of the person in that office. Neither of the Presidential candidates struck a cord with me in that department. But, it is interesting that, so far, you are the only one who has refered to the race of the current POTUS.

But, on to such things as the current POTUS' campaign promises, his judgment in political appointments, et al. What do you think? Good or bad?

Basil Plumley| 2.9.09 @ 1:29PM

I am actually stunned that Interloper hasn't called any and all opponents of Obama; neo-confederates (or is that reserved for others). I have not bought into the conspiracy theories but Obama's greatest enemy is time. If he can't turn things around pretty soon, his next campaign slogan will be "one more year!", "one more year!".

ruth| 2.9.09 @ 3:18PM

Basil. just because Intergroper didn't call you a bigot, doesn't mean he wasn't thinking it. :) Obama's special gifts that prepared him for POTUS: He's 1/2 black, was a hardcore cocaine user, was a Chicago thug ACORN community organizer, voted mostly present while serving in Illinois state government, is a proponent of infanticide and still won't release his birth certificate. Awesome credentials!

One of the problems of the AS 'delusionaries' is y'all don't consider your sources. Michael Goodwin is a conservative columnist for Right Wing publications who is being cited by a far Right blogger, who, in turn is being cited by Robert Stacy McCain, a neo-Confederate and segregationist forced to leave even the Washington Times. President Obama has not lost favor with these people because he never had favor with'em.

RSM's history as a member of the neo-Confederate movement, along with Wesley Pruden's, has been examined thoroughly in articles available online, so I will not lengthen my comments with the details. Any curious person knows how to satisfy her curiosity.

No decent, thinking person would believe a scummy, lying liberal like you, groper. You are the only dolt who constantly bleats phony rants of racism. You are tedious and most disagreeable. Go away.
