You really cannot, in fairness, blame President Obama for naming
“Chuck” Hagel, one of the most clearly anti-Israel, anti-Semitic
members of the Senate (or ex-members in his case) to be Secretary
of Defense. President Obama has not changed his views on Israel
since his first speech at the Democrat convention in 2004, when he
made it clear that his sympathies in the Middle East lay with the
Palestinians. In a way, you have to admire his consistency. Of
course, he has to pay lip service to Israel when he visits Miami
Beach, but how he must laugh at the audiences that applaud him.
He is a charter member of the Chicago angry black man entity,
and they — including former pals Jeremiah Wright and Minister
Farrakhan — have little love for the Jews. So, again, his contempt
for Israel and for Jews is not a surprise.
The parts that are so heart breaking are that:
1.) Most American Jews clearly supported Mr. Obama in his bid
for President against a GOP that has been an incomparably stronger
supporter of Israel than the modern-day Democrat party. If one is
to judge from the stony faces at the DNC whenever Israel was
mentioned, and the fervent support of Iran on those same faces, one
can clearly see who was Israel’s friend and who was not. Never
mind, Barack Obama got two thirds of the Jewish vote. That was
decisive in Florida, Virginia, and Ohio. Barack Obama’s most
productive fund-raisers, especially at the “millionaires and
billionaires” level that Mr. Obama supposedly hates so much, were
almost unanimously Jews. How they are going to square this with
Senator Hagel’s nomination to a post that is of life or death
importance to Israel is anyone’s guess.
But here is a clue: the really committed left-wing Jew does not
care much about Israel. Jews in many cases have loyalties that
trump their interest to Israel. Their support of Mr. Obama is a
case in point. Obviously, it is the right of left-wing American
Jews to have contempt for the Jewish state. That’s what freedom
means.
On orders from Moscow, American Jewish Communists suspended
criticism of Hitler during the August 1939-June 1941 period of the
Ribbentrop-Molotov pact. Violation of that edict was called
“premature antifascism” and men died for it. Not for a moment would
I compare Mr. Obama to any of the evil names above in this
paragraph. I merely point out that those who think all Jews in
America consider Israel a high priority are mistaken. The left-wing
group-think party line far outranks Zionism for many, many
Jews.
You are going to see this in the immediate future, as Mr. Obama
lines up his many Jewish friends and supporters to back Mr.
Hagel.
2.) I hope the people who are supporting Chuck Hagel know that
by confirming him, they are cementing at 100 percent that odds that
Iran will get a nuclear capability without U.S. interference.
Whether Israel can survive an Islamic bomb is questionable at best.
This means a vote to confirm Mr. Hagel is a vote that expresses no
interest in whether Israel survives.
As a student of anti-Semitism in Europe before, during, and
after the Holocaust, no amount of hatred and loathing for Jews
surprises me. Americans who do love Israel should be aware, though,
that it is growing much more likely by the moment that there will
be a second Holocaust. The only real friends that Israel has on
this earth, evangelical Christians, will take note. Whether anyone
else will is a big question.
3.) In a few days, we will mark that 100th birthday of Richard
Nixon, the best friend in the White House that Jews have ever had.
Even now, if you mention Nixon to Israelis, they tear up with
gratitude about how Mr. Nixon saved them in 1973. American Jews
have a very different attitude. I suspect that Mr. Obama will get
away with his contempt for Israel, and that the same Jews who have
always put the party line ahead of Israel will still support him.
If Iran kills two million Jews in an afternoon (God forbid!) they
will find a way to blame George W. Bush.
Poor Israel, poor beleaguered Israel, abandoned by so many
people who call themselves Jewish, so alone, so terribly alone.
Bill8472| 1.7.13 @ 9:02AM
The saddest thing is not that American Jews supported Obama during his two runs for the presidency; the saddest thing is that most American Jews will continue voting liberal when it's becoming clearer and clearer that the liberal party line is not only anti-Israel but antisemitic.
Somehow the Republicans continue to suffer from the mischaracterization of the party as racist and all WASP.
C. Vernon Crisler | 1.7.13 @ 10:16AM
All the Jews who voted for Obama had a choice in November to change, but chose to sleep with Israel-haters instead. I will play my violin when these same people start complaining about this evil administration.
Occam's Tool| 1.7.13 @ 11:05AM

William R IS antisemitic. I love when Jew haters discuss how they are not when everything they do clearly points to problems. Don't worry, Bill. In a Pat Buckman administration which will follow Iran getting the bomb and blowing up Texas City I will make sure you will be on the list.
Why people think Islamic idiots getting nukes is only Israel's problem is beyond me. Hagel is a bloody idiot. He is OBAMA's nominee, folks. Obama is an American hater. Hmmm...
Al Adab| 1.7.13 @ 12:19PM
Really have to hand it to this president. His pro-islamist, anti-liberty agenda in the middle east is certainly bearing fruit... and no one seems to notice how effective it has been. Just look at all of our new friends, all the new pro-american nations in the region. What a brave new world he has created. It is so much safer now than in 2008.
PaddyL| 1.14.13 @ 1:00PM
I consider your comment to be sarcastic hyperbole. Am I correct?
The Middle East and North Africa are more dangerous to American interests now than any time in history. The entire area is about to explode into internecine civil wars between Muslim sects and other religious groups and failed states like Syria. Obama's foreign policies fueled the fires of instability in the region.
Dr Fouad Ajami describes the situation quite well in an op-ed article in todays WSJ, "The Struggle for the Fertile Crescent."
Jack in Wi| 1.7.13 @ 4:00PM
70% of Jews voted for Obama. The vast majority of his campaign funds came from the Jewish ccommunity, as Ben says. To me it means that Hagel is acceptable to most of them. Most Jews by polling were against the Iraq war. Most Jews of my aquaintonship are against an insane attack on Iran. The Jewish billionaires who back Obama want the Middle East settled once and for all. They may be Zionists but are sick of the settlers and people like Bibby Nutanyahoo, who want nothing but a Biblical Israel fromm the river to the river. Carter, Clinton, and now Obama want the Middle East settled with a 2 state solution. Hopefully they realize that a war with Iran would be insanity. Iran is not developing nuclear weapons at this time. The best solution for Iran is what Ben's old pal Nixon did with China. Send an Ambassdar and open relations with them. end immpral and illegal sanctions and negotiate a complete settlement. The Iranians have offered this for at least 10 years.
Jack in Wi| 1.7.13 @ 4:20PM
Obama is playing brilliant politics right now. He has the Republicans looking like warmongers, gun nuts, and people who only care about the rich. Now he throws Hagel into the mix. Hagel is a Repubicna realist and war hero along the lines of G. H. W. Bush. He doesn't hate Israel and will grovel sufficently to get the nomination. The reason Obama wants him is because he wants to cut defense spending in a drastic way. He needs a Republican front man to sell sell the idea. The people are sick of foreign wars and endless spending on huge defense budgets. Obama hopes to use these needed cuts and huge tax increases to fund his socialization of American life. It is time Republicans gave up on Israel and let it carry it's own water. Most Jews love Obama. The Republicans never got anything from the Neocon foreign policy of the last 12 years but a destruction of the partry. It is time to go back to an America first policy and let the world run itself. Vote for Hagel, back defense cuts and end to foreign ars and foreign aid. Double down and go for peace. End all of Obama's wars with drones and attacks on American civil liberties. Keep fighting for America and American liberty here, not in places where we are hated like Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

This whole column is about the insane policy of the Republican Party to follow Israel over the cliff. Conservatives get nothing from supporting Israel. We don't get votes, money, or respect. Why the hell do we do it? It is called the Stockholm syndrome, or battered wife ssyndrome. This policy is only about a dozen years old, with the Bush Cheney regime. Before that most Republicans were sane realists like Hagel and Jim Baker. As Baker supposed to have said when he wanted to stand up to the Israeli Lobby. " F. the Jews they don't vote for us anyhow. BTW-- those of the Christian Far Right -Wing who "support" Israel are considerably more anti-semitic then many residents of the occupied regions.. and i would trust my neighbors in Gaza a hundred -fold more than the Christians who "claim" to be "our friends"

IN Israel, among MOST Sabras ( native -born Israelis) The animosity and distrust we feel towards the nefarious motivations that the Evangelical Christians have , in their "Love" for Israel, is almost as strong as their distrust that Hamas wants to make peace with us.
The Evangelicals are actually more anti-semitic than our neighbors in Gaza.. at least The Palastinians are our Semitic brothers..while the racist/anti-Jewish Right-Wing Christian sects want NOTHING LESS than the destruction of Judiasm--to be replaced by their notion of a Christian "kingdom of heaven"

Those American Christians are only trusted as long as they are throwing money at Israel and giving their children to fight for them.
Kinda sounds like being "used" doesn't it.
Remember, the Jewish chief priests had Jesus tortured and killed after he threw the money changers from the temple, so that shows how much respect a Christian can expect from a Jew.

Yes, Stein should go back to writing his usual pointless tripe and leave the big issues to younger clearer minds.
When Obama is criticized by the right, his supporters almost always label their criticism as race based. That's an outrageous, hateful debating tactic. Yet, the pro-Israel lobby do the same when anyone declares anything less than complete obediance to AIPAC. The critics become anti-semitic Nazis in their small minds. How tiresome.

My son, Armand Luke Frickey, died on January 6th, 2005 in Taji, Iraq. Three artillery shells in the road out of Taji killed everyone in my son's Bradley. We buried him without a face.
Israel has had its share of our support and money. While we supported Israel all these years, Israel slipped settlers into the West Bank and done other things which make it difficult to support her in the world.
Chuck Hagel seems skeptical that we have to support Israel, right or wrong. And he's right.
The claim of Israel to Eretz Israel, the Biblical borders of Israel, is shaky. Israel, with between 200 and 400 nuclear weapons, is in a very shaky position to tell Iran it can't have any.
Obama , Hagel and our new Secretary of State have to recognize the history of the Levant - and of Israel itself. We can't ignore how Israel was founded - on land which was bought from local sheikhs some times, and taken forcibly from local Palestinians in other cases.
When Israel's origins are discussed, the fight over the West Bank becomes clearer, as does the Arab street's demand that more of Israel be returned to its original owners.
I told my son Luke that the war he was about to fight was a good cause. I think it was. You can't tell me that in a country the size of California, many tons of WMDs couldn't have been buried securely.
I have another son, and grandsons. I'm not going to tell them that fighting for Israel is a good cause, because I don't believe it myself.

Occam's Tool, I'm saying what Americans should have been saying all along - that we're not going to have a double standard for our "friends" (who sunk the USS Liberty despite the huge American flag it was sailing under) and our enemies. I have supported Israel most of my life - the "wake-up" moment was Israel's spy operation in which they basically opened up a branch of Kinko's to copy all the classified NSA documents Jonathan Pollard was giving them, and selling overhead photos to the Soviets that they got under Reagan - who basically ordered the NSA to let Israel have uncensored access to our satellite overheads and even give tasking orders for them. And they sold some of the take from those satellites to the USSR.
So you can call me every name in the book, jerk. It doesn't change the fact that our cabinet officers and other politicians swear an oath to support and defend our Constitution and our country - NOT Israel.
obadiah| 1.7.13 @ 8:26PM

Even though many paleo-conservatives are supporting Hagel I'm not. His record is not that of a traditional conservative. During the Kosovo conflict Hagel backed Clinton's US led NATO intervention on behalf of Albanian terrorists making way for the 78 day NATO bombardment of Serbia.
We can commend Hagel on his record of military service as a Vietnam veteran who was awarded two Purple Hearts for being wounded in the line of duty. That can't be disputed. Hagel is a war hero, but just like John McCain or John Kerry being a war hero doesn't always make one a good policy maker let alone a good leader on Capitol Hill.
This is a short synopsis of Hagel's Senate voting record from Wikipedia.
Voted for the Patriot Act [31]
Voted for the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts [32][33]
Voted against No Child Left Behind [34]
Voted against Bush’s Medicare prescription drug bill [35]
Voted against McCain-Feingold[36]
It must also be noted that like John Kerry, Hagel was FOR THE IRAQ WAR BEFORE HE WAS AGAINST IT. I find nothing paleo-conservative about Hagel's foreign policy record.
Nightwinger| 1.8.13 @ 5:57PM
1. The Defense Secretary is not a policy maker. The job takes direction from the President. So who care's what Hagel's past votes have been?
2. If by "paleo-conservative" you mean policies like threatening, bullying, bombing and invading other countries, then even the Obama administration qualifies.
Chuck Hagel's major job will be to CUT the massive, bloated Defense budget----something all previous Defense Secretaries tried but couldn't do because of powerful Congressional people with lucrative defense contracts in their home venues.
Besides having a former ENLISTED soldier bossing the Pentagon brasshats around is something worth watching if just for fun.
Dimitry_Aleksandrovich| 1.8.13 @ 6:17PM
Nightwinger I posted his record because many paleo-conservatives who I usually agree with on foreign policy (Pat Buchanan and many writers with American Conservative Magazine) have pretty much applauded Obama's decision to pick Hagel for the job, but I am merely pointing out that his past votes and stands on foreign policy have been far from paleo-conservative.
Secondly bullying, bombing and invading are not paleo-conservative they are neo-conservative and interventionist liberal.
If Hagel cuts the bloated defense budget God bless him, it needs to be cut and yes it would be fun to watch a former enlisted man bossing the Pentagon brass.
TSIndiana| 1.13.13 @ 7:01AM
Interesting how republicans turn on their own when they don't tow the Tea Party hate Obama line and actually agree to work for the country and not against it.
Dimitry_Aleksandrovich| 1.8.13 @ 6:03PM
Just so Occam doesn't become TOO fond of me I must ask the question why must Hagel or any other American citizen appointed to a Cabinet position in the executive office first have to pass a pro-Israel litmus test? The last time I checked the United States and Israel are too separate nations with their own agendas. Israel is not the 51st State nor is the United States a province of Israel.
Secondly I don't understand why so many so called "truth loving" conservatives get up in arms when anyone questions how the modern state of Israel came into being? I am fair I will question the United States and how it came into being and I will point out that ethnic cleansing of our indigenous peoples as well as slavery are very much a part of American history. To say those things never happened would be revisionism. It is the same with Russian history. I have no qualms saying that the pogroms against the Jews in Tsarist Russia happened and they were wrong. Why then cannot many conservatives and others in America and Israel admit that over 700,000 Palestinians were ethnically cleansed from Jewish controlled territory between December of 1947 and January of 1949 and even before then Palestinian farmers (tenants, not land owners) were evicted from their homes after European Jews had bought the land from Palestinian land owners. I just want to know why those issues are never addressed or ignored.
Dimitry_Aleksandrovich| 1.8.13 @ 6:03PM
At least the fanatics on the evangelical right as well as the Jewish Zionist community will say God gave this land to the Jews and the Palestinians were trespassing (even if they had inhabited the territory for a thousand years or more). What excuse do more secular Israelis and more secular American conservatives give for what happened to the Palestinians?
Last but not least I must point out to Mr. Stein that there are sects of ultra-Orthodox Jews who completely reject Zionism and thus reject the Jewish State as a legitimate representative of all things and people that are Jewish. Before the Jewish State was created isn't it true that many Jews held the belief that they would return to the Biblical Israel only after the Messiah had come? If that is true then Zionism (Jewish nationalism) was not a traditional Jewish notion therefore the division between Jews on the issue of Israel is not merely a left-right divide but also a divide in Jewish theological though as well with the ultra-Orthodox who are opposed to the modern state of Israel upholding the more traditional Jewish beliefs on the subject.
Marc Jeric| 1.12.13 @ 12:49PM
There is no such nationality as Palestinians; those folk are former Jordanians and Egyptians. There has never been a Palestinian state, ever.
Dimitry_Aleksandrovich| 1.15.13 @ 2:53PM
That's like calling an Irish Catholic from Belfast British just because they've lived under English occupation for centuries. The Palestinians inhabited that land for centuries. They lived under British occupation during Mandate and were under Ottoman occupation for four hundred years. Before that Palestinians lived under Mamluk, Crusader and Byzantine imperial rule. Just because Palestinians have never had a nation state doesn't mean that they are not a distinct people with a history and heritage.
Vance P. Frickey| 1.8.13 @ 10:05PM
Occam's Tool just showed us the downside of Zionism - it's all about "What have you done for us lately?"
That tool lied about me and my motivations for being an Israel skeptic. I have no illusions about the problems of Israel's neighbors. A scumbag who had no love for Israel pushed a button and killed my son, the other men in his squad from the Louisiana Army National Guard, and two men from the New York National Guard (the 69th "Wolfhounds" Infantry Brigade). So Occam's Chancred Tool lied about me liking child rape, beheading or other practices of Islamist extremists.
Israel isn't alone in having shaky title to some of its land - The Saudis took the Holy Places of Islam and most of the Hejaz Peninsula from Jordan (then "Transjordan"). France and Britain drew up the borders of the Middle East during and after World War I. So the Palestinians' demands are themselves shaky.
But when we spend a few billion dollars in the defense of Israel and they pursue a foreign policy that includes extensive and massive espionage on us through a traitor who is justly still in jail, we ought to back off from a total commitment to Israel's defense.
Contrary to the Suppurating Tool's claims, when Israel demands we "do something about Iran," it pretty much includes a commitment to invade Iranian territory, bomb their nuclear infrastructure, put our warships in harm's way - all for Israel's security. I say that they're demanding a lot more loyalty from us than they've given us.

Obama’s program called Arab Spring was designed to bring jihadist governments to Muslim countries. It has succeeded so far in Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt. It is designed to do the same in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Gaza, West Bank, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Coupled with the existing jihadist governments in Sudan, Turkey, and Iran, the program will be able to eliminate Israel, to exterminate all the Jews there, and thus to produce the final state of peace in the Middle East. Obama will then be ready to accept his second Nobel Peace prize. That is the reason for the Benghazi murder cover-up. Nominating Kerry, Hagel, and Brennan will advance this plan of Israel destruction.

Obama’s program of active support to the movements called “Arab Spring”, including monetary assistance, arms supply, and in case of Libya active war action via bombings of Kaddafi forces, was designed to bring Islamist-jihadist governments to power. The program has been successful so far in Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt; it is intended to proceed with the same aims in Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Sudan, Algeria, “Palestine”. The Benghazi murder cover-up is consistent a) with the overall Obama’s policy described above; b) with the unscheduled jihadist attack on US diplomatic post there resulting in 4 Americans dead, after Obama’s refusal to provide the necessary help, and c) with the weak and repeated excuses citing an obscure You-Tube film trailer as the cause for that terrorist attack. Obama is now pressuring the jihadist government of Libya to control those unruly elements so as not to compromise the overall aims of the Arab Spring program. What then is the final aim of that program? The destruction of Israel, of course! How can one explain the fact that 90% of American Jews support Obama? Is their love of socialism and communism stronger that their allegiance to Israel? It is certainly not a sign of their blindness and stupidity, since their average education and their inborn intelligence are vastly superior to the national averages. And, of course, this policy is consistent with Obama being a marxist Muslim.
Tyler| 1.15.13 @ 3:59PM
I want to laugh at this because of how ridiculous and foolish this post is. So, Iran getting 1 nuclear weapon makes it likely that Israel will be wiped out? Israel is more than capable of surviving on its own.
