Michael Mann
made the news last week. It’s amazing how the Climategate
hockey-stick chart-maker continues to do so for “work” he did a
long time ago.
The new-old newsworthy thing he did was
forward an email almost three years
ago. That’s news today because the message was from University of
East Anglia climate data-keeper Phil Jones, who asked Mann to
delete some emails from fellow UN IPCC conspirators related to
their Fourth Assessment Report. Jones wanted Mann to tell his
friend Eugene Wahl at Alfred University to delete emails too. Mann
passed the message to Wahl.
The problem with this is Mann
told investigators at his place of
employment, Pennsylvania State University,
that he did not tell others to delete emails. Now his explanation
is that he forwarded Jones’s email — ”ASAP“ —
for Wahl’s benefit, but not for him to delete his emails. Wahl
scrubbed anyway.
Mann is one of the more interesting global warming
alarmists, perhaps second only to Bill “Those
damned shriveled ears of corn“ McKibben. He hates
the fossil fuel industry and thinks all his tormenters are funded
by them. And people like to do funny
things with his
image, mostly because he’s
so hypersensitive.
Mann still works, or at least he gets paid — apparently
very well — for projects with his name on them. When Climategate
first broke a year and a half ago, I found his
vital statistics on Penn State’s website.
They were quite exhaustive, mentioning his work on oxygen ordering
in 1988 all the way to his recent posts on the alarmist RealClimate
blog. Upon my discovery I thought others might be interested in the
nearly $6 million in grants Mann received over the years for his
projects, which I
shared via American Spectator.
Since then Mann has added two more projects to his repertoire,
bringing another $280,000 or so in government grants (from the
National Science Foundation and from NOAA) to Penn
State.
The first project is called Development
of a Northern Hemisphere Gridded Precipitation Dataset Spanning the
Past Half Millennium for Analyzing Interannual and Longer-Term
Variability in the Monsoons. The abstract on
NOAA’s website
explains, in part:
While much past proxy work has focused on the
reconstruction of large-scale surface temperature patterns, there
is perhaps no more societally relevant climate variable than
precipitation. Yet, no comprehensive large-scale reconstructions of
precipitation for the Northern Hemisphere (i.e., all of North
America and Asia) have been performed spanning the past millennium.
This proposed reconstruction project will use all available
proxy-climatic records spanning the last 500-2000 years in the
Northern Hemisphere to develop: 1) gridded seasonal and annual
precipitation datasets for North America, Europe and Asia with
various spatial resolutions and dataset lengths, and 2) a
2.5ÅãÅ~2.5Åã latitude and longitude annual (and/or summer)
precipitation dataset of the last 500 years for the Northern
Hemisphere….
One key outcome of the proposed research is a better
knowledge of the natural range of precipitation variation, and its
relationship with larger-scale climate dynamics, for policymakers
and stakeholders who need to gauge societal vulnerability to
variations in water on timescales of decades to centuries, be it
natural and anthropogenic in origin….
Don’t know about you, but reconstructions in the hands of
Mann make me nervous, especially when he’s trying to get hip with
the “societally relevant” and influence its policymakers and
stakeholders. So I asked a few of my climate science pals in the
global warming realist camp what they thought. Their
responses:
• “Pretty straightforward study. If the same
proxies are used that he did for temperature, it will also yield
hockey sticks. By the way, this will all be very interesting
because there has been no trend in monsoon rainfall that bears any
relation to global or regional temperature.” (a
climatologist)
• “In the hands of a scientist, this proposal
might be good. How, I wonder, are they going to figure out
what the precipitation was in 1250 in (say) the Four Corners
area? Only Michael Mann knows. Likely, he’ll use
tree-ring widths that supposedly told him about temperatures.” (a
doctor of physics)
• “Of course the Mann study you attached is
another disgraceful waste of taxpayer’s money by the Cult….”
(another doctor of physics)
Speaking of cults, that brings me to the second project
that Mann has recently added to his CV: Scientific
Input on Climate Change Outreach by a Network of Zoos and
Aquariums. This undertaking was blessed with a $1
million grant from the National Science Foundation to the Global
Warming Education Sect, who propagate their religion to little
kiddies by scaring them about polar bears and other imagined
threatened species. From the
abstract on NSF’s website:
The core goals of the planning phase are to a) develop and
extend the strong multidisciplinary partnership, b) conduct
research needed to understand the preconceptions, attitudes,
beliefs, and learning modes of zoo visitors regarding climate
change; and c) identify and prototype innovative learning
environments and tools…. The long-term vision centers on the
development of a network of U.S. zoos, in partnership with climate
change domain scientists, learning scientists, conservation
psychologists, and other stakeholders, serving as a sustainable
infrastructure to investigate strategies designed to foster changes
in public attitudes, understandings, and behavior surrounding
climate change.
It looks
like Penn State and Mann only got a small
fraction of this grant, but clearly the opportunity to create
future alarmists was not to be passed up. The plan is to spend
three years blanketing zoos across America to try and understand
the psyches of visitors, preach climate propaganda, and convert
them to the cause.
Objective science on the march,
obviously.

Often we are told about how many tons of CO2 aer created by different activities. America is said to produce 7 billion tons of CO2 annually.
Bit to put this in perspective here are some facts.
At sea level there is approximately 14.7 pinds of air pressure per square inch. Multiply 14.7 punds by 144 square inches in a square foot and you get about 2116 pounds per square foot for air pressure. Lets call it 1 tons (2000 pounds.
There are approximately 27.9 million tons of air per square mile.
There are approximately 200,000,000 (200 million) square miles of surface area on the earth.
So that menas that there is about 27,900,000 x 200,000,000 tons of air on the earth.
So all of the CO2 America produces each year would be 7 billion divided by 27.9 million or about 250 square miles of CO2. This a little more than 1 millionth of all the air.
Since CO2 is used for plants to grow they use up much of this CO2. Studies show that increased CO2 levels in the air increase the rate of plant growth. So, the CO2 is usd up at a faster rate in the world when there is more of it which in turn reduces the rate of increase.
I'm all for keeping our environment safe but lets use a little persepctive on this. And since China produces more CO2 than America, lets keep this all in perspective before calling for nonsense cap and trade bills that penalize only America; but then again that is the REAL objective of the left here. But for the straight-out facts about so-called global warming, "The sky is not falling." And with CO2 levels at less than 1 percent of all air, the sun is the driving force of global temperatures much more than CO2 levels are.

McCandles| 3.18.11 @ 8:18AM
I'm no "climatologist", but the data I have seen support your assertion about the sun's activity as a major driving force in global temperatures. As for CO2, the oceans release more of their massive stores of dissolved CO2 when temperatures go up (solubility decreases with temperature increases). That is fairly basic stuff, and explains why temperature increases PREDATE CO2 increases. Why are so many scientists supporting this man-caused nonsense?
BackToBasics| 3.18.11 @ 7:00PM
Good points and yes it is very basic stuff we've all come up with here. By itself these basic but true facts make the claims that global warming is certain and also mostly a man-caused problem all the more preposterous. And for these pseudoscientists, forget about the scientific method. All they care about is more funding for their false research and they are very likely leftists as well. Global warming was one of their hoped-for big clubs for use to control the population, Marxist-style.

So many scientists support this nonsense because, like other humanoids of a certain bent, it FEELS GOOD. It feels good to denounce the rest of civilization for their prosperity and success.
The 'science' they recite is just filler and is easily refuted by those among us who are not predisposed to want to institute controls on every aspect of life.
If you read the synopsis of the PennState investigation after ClimateGate you sensed a run-up to the whitewash that ensued.
Byron| 3.18.11 @ 11:35AM
Even more basic: High energy radiation hits a CO2 molecule in the air and is reemitted in the IR region as heat energy- the "greenhouse" effect. High energy radiation misses a CO2 molecule in the air and hits the ground and the same thing occures, it is reemitted in the IR region as heat energy- the "greenhouse" effect. The total energy of the sun plus the natural cooling of the planets core and radioactive decomposition is all the energy we get. There is no magical way to get more. People have been screwing with other peoples minds to make money since....
BackToBasics| 3.18.11 @ 7:09PM
Good points. And along this line, it was interesting to note that a group of "more objective" scientists who were reviewing the data used for creating the climate models that show the runaway greenhouse effect were surprised that the model showed no increase in cloud formation with higher temperatures. Higher cloud formation would relect a greater percentage of the incoming solar radiation and hence have both a cooling and a balancing effect to the supposed greenhouse effect. So, the model was flawed, false really. Many other data and scenarios were ignored in order to produce many false climate models and claims of the man-caused global warming crowd.

Scott A. Mandia | 3.18.11 @ 10:42AM
Dr. Mann's work has been verified by many international scientists. The hockey stick-shape temperature plot that shows modern climate considerably warmer than past climate has been verified by many scientists using different methodologies (PCA, CPS, EIV, isotopic analysis, & direct T measurements) and many different proxies for T including corals, ocean sediments, lake sediments, ice cores, cave deposits, and boreholes.
There is no informed debate that humans are overloading the air with too much carbon and that this carbon is causing the planet to dramatically warm. There is no informed debate that increasing carbon will cause this warming to continue. (For perspective, the amount of CO2 that is added to the air every day by human activities, primarily from burning fossil fuels, is equal to the amount of oil spilled by 8,000 Gulf Oil Spills per day.) Virtually every publishing scientist and all international science academies agree on this.
Who else is concerned? Military and intelligence experts warn that climate-induced crises could topple governments, feed terrorist movements or destabilize entire regions. Health officials warn us that climate change could be the biggest global health threat of the 21st century. Climate change was recently listed as the greatest strategic risk currently facing the property/casualty insurance industry.
We need to reduce our emissions of carbon for the sake of our public health, national security, and economic competitiveness. Surely it is foolish to base our economic energy needs on sources that are dwindling in supply and increasing in price when, instead, we could move toward energy efficiency and cheaper-by-the-year, infinite sources such as the sun and wind. If we stay addicted to fossil fuels and do not begin investing in those technologies now, we will be buying them from China in the future instead of selling it to them.

"Dr. Mann's work has been verified by many international scientists. Nice bit of disinformation. Funny how you use the word verified. Nice and ambigious. In light of McIntylre's and McKiricks' anihilating critique of MBH9x (the so-called Hockey Stick reconstruction), it is fair to say that the Hockey Stick is now dead. I saw that you mentioned PCAs (Principal Components Analysis) ; but you again you mis-spoke. The HS wasn't verified by PCAs. PCAs made up the HS. And it was Mann's mis-application of PCAs that got the attention of one of the world's foremost statisticians, Dr Wegemen. Both McIntyre and Wegeman wrote extensive peer-reviewed paper's on Mann's PCA problems (by peer reviewed, I mean reviewed by other mathmaticians). But, the greatest problem with Mann's HS lies in his choice of proxies, especially those that came from Biffra's proxy analysis of Yemal, and Mann's own analysis of the one lone proxy, the Foxtail Brtistlecone tree-ring. Especially relevant is the divergence of local temperature splices and those of the bristlecone. The blad of the HS is derived from this one lone proxy. Remove it, and you remove all of the warming of the mid-late 20th Century. When McIntyre reviewed the surface temps of that region of California, he saw that they in fact went down as the proxy temps went up. As it stands, this one lone proxy measured both CO2 fertilization and precip more than it did temperatures. Yet. Mann's PCAs reduced 1300 proxies to this one proxy. In later correspondence, Mann stated that the Bristlecone proxy teleconnected very well to ENSO and therefore stood as a good represenation for the world (obvious nonsense). In subsequent correspondence, Mann simply ignored the work of mathematicians, leading Dr Wegeman to tell the Barton Committee that Climate Scientists were totally incompetent in using advanced statistical techniques for thier "studies". He called Climate Science nothing more than an incestuous group of people who peer review eachother's work and then call it "settled".
We all know why Mann failed to issue any scientific rebuttals outside his own "peer group. They obviously wished to keep the truth of thier manipulations secret. The Hide the Decline scandal is just the tip of the iceberg. I wouldn't accept any studies from this group (aka the Team) knowing what we know now.

Scott,
Stop 'parroting' the taking points you got from algore and try to pay attention. There is no global warming. The so called 'hockey stick' exists only because the data was manipulated to make it appear. The data collection was flawed. The data itself was selectively used to prove a predetermined point. And, worst of all, the entire scenario is the factually incorrect compilation of unconnected facts into an unproven computer model that takes so many interdependent variables into account that the result is a complete hoax. It is people like you that are driving our country into disaster. Frankly, it may already be too late to get out of the mess that you and your cohorts on the left have gotten us in to.
What really needs to happen is that the membership rolls of EVERY ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP be used as a 'master list' upon which will be placed the names of EVERY DUES PAYING MEMBER.
Then, every person on that list will be tatooed across their forehead with a big green leaf to show their affiliations. Then, all people bearing this tatoo will be barred from using anything that requires electricity, or fossil fuels of any kind. What is most infuriating about you and your 'ilk' is that you believe and then espouse all this unsubstantiated 'knowledge' while sitting comfortably in your heated/air conditioned home, typing on an electrically powered computer, using the electrically powered internet. While doing this, you are eating food that was produced by using energy from the sources you want to ban; drinking water purified by electricity and chemicals; and then eliminating your waste in the same kind of sewer system that also uses electricity and chemicals. Your hypocricy is disgusting. When you are sitting in a home you built yourself with no energy from any source outside your own muscle power, drinking natural springwater, eating totally natural foods that required no fertilization or transport or even processing; that did not require any heating or cooling to get to your ever gaping mouth; you might have a small reason to spew your stupidity.
I dare you to go without current technology for just one week. I guarantee you that you will not make seven days. You are an evil, dangerous, ignorant, and, frankly, mentally inferior moron.
Rachal Carson was just like you. She thought she was oh so smart! I know! Let's call everybody who uses DDT a "KILLER", or an "EARTH HATER"! YEAH; THAT'LL SHOW THEM!
The only problem was that, after her ban went into effect more than 100,000,000, or, for those like you who can't read really big numbers, like the Trillinos barry is spending to bankrupt us; ONE HUNDRED MILLION people died of Malaria; mostly women and little children who were most at risk. A little example of what we're up against. I earned a B.S. and a M.S. in Engineering from Penn State in 1969 and 1972. Back then it was a good, highly respected university; especially in technical fields.
Unfortunately, it is rapidly becoming a joke with Political Correctness ruling over everything. Even worse, the administration really thinks everything is fine and dandy. It's not.
As may be evident by some of my posts; I am in "The autumn of my years", with a disease that is taking its toll with every passing day. I am at the point in my life that I must make my plans for the disposal of my life's possessions and results of a long and relatively successful career. After making provision for my loving bride of 42 years and my adult children and grandchildren; I was determined to devote some of my resources to institutions and foundations I feel can make the world a better place. Foolishly, I included my 'Alma Mater' in the mix.
I was not, however, ready to drop a significant sum (Seven digits to the left of the decimal point!) on ANYBODY or any institution without clear instructions as to how it will be used according to MY wishes. After all, It was my work and struggles that allowed me to acquire my modest level of wealth.
So, I contacted Graham Spanier, President of Penn State; and of course, was intercepted by one of his 'palace guards', my very own "Drone of the Day". Having been a Group President of a Fortune 500 Company, I expected that the good doctor might have somebody screening his calls. But, to make a very long and irritating story short; once the succession of drones learned that I wanted control over where my gift was to be used (Endowment of three chairs: one in Electrical Engineering, one in the history and Culture of America as determined by the Framers of our Constitution; and one to balance out the lies and distortions being perpetrated by the Penn State Department of Meteorology and Climatology.) I was bluntly told that Dr. Spanier would be too busy to talk with me WHENEVER I contacted him. I actually tried to go around the drones by contacting other areas of the University, but I always ended up at the same place, arguing with the same people. I finally decided that Penn State really didn't need my money.
Time marched on, and I began getting fund-raising requests from Penn State; including invitations to local 'teas' (Dog & pony show anyone?) that Dr. Spanier would be hosting around the U.S.; allegedly to 'connect' with Alumni from various parts of the Country. I was even offered a private discussion with the president; which I declined. Now the evil, horrible Republicans are slashing Penn State's budget way down below the bone because they have displayed an irritating refusal to understand reality in our devastated economy. (Courtesy of pelosi, reid, and barry the muslim thug)
I didn't even consider sending any of my kids to Penn State, they went elsewhere and did quite well. I have also made numerous inquiries about the lies and distortions being perpetrated by Michael Mann; a supposed 'adademic' who has done more to make Penn State's once highly respected Department of Meteorology and Climatology the total laughingstock it has become; thanks to his criminal misuse of university funds and facilities in his attempt to help barry, the dems, and their various allies destroy the United States of America.
I urge every one of you to tell all the Penn State graduates you know to stop giving Penn State one cent. The once great university has become a joke, but not a funny one. They are deeply involved in the deadly serious effort to destroy our Country. Michael Mann must be terminated, regardless of any tenure rights, and the University must be purged of the P.C. crowd that has destroyed a once great institution. The only thing of honor left at Penn State is Joe Paterno and his program, which, by the way, receives absolutely NO funds from the University. I weep for my school.

"According to a list of grants at The Free Republic, Mann has brought in a total of $4.2 million since he joined PSU in 2006, with a significant portion of that money to be spent over the next several years. From 2006 to 2009, Mann’s grants totaled about $1.8 million. In that same period, PSU’s total research income was $2.8 billion ($2,804 million). As a percentage, Mann’s grants represented 0.06% of the total research money that PSU was granted between 2006 and 2009. "
PSU would cut Dr. Mann loose in a heartbeat if they thought for one moment that he did anything wrong that could jeopardize PSU's lofty research status.
I went to Penn State also and I am proud to say so. I admire Mike Mann for carrying on with his research in the face of politically-motivated personal attacks.
Why do many of you persist in attacking the messengers because you do not like the message? If the US keeps its head buried in the fossil fuel sands we will lose market share in the next tech revolution which is energy efficiency and renewables.
Are you aware that imported fossil fuels account for about half of our entire US trade deficit and we are importing this oil from countries that do not like Americans? This is the "American" Spectator, right? Why should we keep outsourcing our money to anti-American governments? Let us invest it here and SELL it to others.

And most conservatives here at AS want less reliance on foreign oil and that is why most of them advocate extacting it by various means dmoestically such as in ANWR and in the Gulf, the Dakotas, etc.

Scott,
You probably attended PSU sometine in the 90s when the academic standards went to hell in a handcart. Michael Mann is a liar and a thief. He has already caused so much damage to Penn State's reputation that their budget is getting cut to shreds; partly because of the scandal that mann and graham spanier are so steadily ignoring. Since my time on the Board, I know personally distinguished alumni who have collectively withdrawn more than $400 MILLION in donations, grants, and bequests because of their shame over the university's conscious decision to ignore the adademic cheating perpetrated by michael mann.
Mann is a disgrace to the University, as is any cretin who is so politically indoctrinated that they still believe the fairy tale of glo-bull warming. Unfortunatelt, this fairy tale is deadly dangerous and has already gone well down the road to destroying our economy.
In parting, the two week eruption of Mt. I never once got personal. But since you brought it up; in an earlier age Mann would have been fired and black listed for his actions. He would have spent the remainder of his career teaching earth science at Ditchweed Community College.

Stonewall, delay and obsfrucate for ten years or more still having not released any of the data or methodology that you use to form your hypothesis on the one hand and declare the people asking to review your work as "deniers."
I don't know what exactly it is that Doctor Mann is engaged in but it certainlt is not science. Scientists publish their base data and methodology along with their hypothesis. Doctor Mann is engaged in promoting a religion.

I'm done reading. Scott, the imbecile, doesn't even make an argument, he simply links an article from someone else. Good night all.
Perhaps, after much rest, Scott can make an argument based upon his own ideas.
The Bruce| 3.19.11 @ 3:16AM
Actually, scratch that. I will be back at a later time. Scott is among the very same people that were telling us in the 70's that we were on the verge of an Ice Age (temps were cooling then).
Apparently these so-called highly educated "experts" failed to read the pattern on a simple graph that our average temperatures have been cooling/warming on a 30 year cycle, for the last ten thousand years.
They also can't seem to figure out why Venus, Mars, and Jupiter were warming during the 90's. It certainly couldn't be because of our evil SUVs!!!
(more to follow, I'm dead tired).

This is Mann:

Oh wait, that's not Michael Mann, it's Michael Moore.
This is the other side of the continent:

Can't you just LOOK at these people and wonder if they are sane? Great thinkers? Heroic renaissance men?

It does not surprise me in the least that fools and fakes continue to thrive. As American are now dealing with the quakery that passes itself as science (5$ gas anyone). Mann has found himself in a niche of the elite government fed monster created by the university system this country has created over the past 40 years. His ilk will always be defended and his fraud taught a gospel truth. The reason. Mann and others like him appreciate the money, status, and benefits. The gravy train is also their avenue to becoming one of the elites that can then have the power to tell everyone else whats good for them. They become gods of Olympus drinking and eating the nectar and ambrosia while moving the "little people", whom they pity for their stupid, ignorant, silly lives, around the game board of their latest, nether world, theory. Reality be damned!
Barry Goldwater| 3.20.11 @ 9:02PM
"Reality be damned!"
You wouldn't know reality if it hit you in the head.

I would like to see all grants from the Government stopped at once and not started again until we have drilling permits. We could do a one on one basis. Grants are a form of prostitution that should make Harry Reid rethink his talking points about it in Nevada. Grants are an embarassment to the oldest profession and if their ideas are so good that they need money.. sell it to the marketplace like everyone else. They should be banned until we have a balanced budget!

This 40-year conspiracy by our eco-nazis and commies continues through stages: global cooling hoax in the 1970's; global warming scam in the 1990's; climate change flimflam in the 2000's; and finally cap & trade power grab now.
All designed by government-paid drones to introduce a UN-sponsored world socialist government and to nationalize further our private enterprize.
Richard Baker| 3.20.11 @ 12:11PM
Grant whores are thieves with Ph.Ds. The madam is the federal government. Mann is an exemplar as a thief.

Often, the same "scientists" who praise the contrived climate data and models and "research" done in universities such as Penn State / State College, East Anglia in the UK, CSU at Boulder, etc. would be the first ones to criticize hypotheses and ideas presented by those who think that Intelligent Design is a possible way to explain life's existence.
They call Intelligent Design bad science, but turn around and praise the work of Mann and the other "scientists" who have a Marxist agenda at the core of thepseudosceince they call global-warming.
Intelligent Design has a lot more going for it than fudged and falsified global warming prognostications do.
Barry Goldwater| 3.20.11 @ 9:01PM

Yup, he's definitely well-qualified to comment on climate change.

Goldwater:
And your area of expertise is what? Based upon what is known publicly, a reasonably educated person can figure out that Mann and his ilk are frauds. Is that too hard for you?
