The Obama Watch

The Splashdown of the Obama Presidency

Happy Days is here again.

Primetime is difficult. It can be incredibly unforgiving -- especially in this season of high-def politics. The exposure associated with 300 plus million viewers watching every presidential miscue has never been greater. Yet, primetime is the venue that the venerable Obama chose when he turned hope and change into a 24/7 infomercial. That his ratings are slipping is beyond debate. How and when he reached his tipping point is the real cliffhanger. No, his fade is not about policy, and it's not about politics. It's not about economics and it's not about healthcare. It's about style. It's about how President Barack Obama jumped the shark in démodé denim.

Shark jumping has its origin in an instant that happened 32 years ago this month. It was on an inauspicious autumn night when most of America had just finished dinner. Unsuspecting and innocent, families of all stripes were winding their day down, yearning for a little respite. They were looking for a break in the bluster of Cold War contentions and deleterious disco. They were hoping to get lost in primetime, in a better time -- in Happy Days. What they got instead was anything but happy. For, on the evening of September 20, of 1977, Arthur Fonzarelli ("the Fonz") traded his patented blue jeans for powder-blue swim trunks and water-skied an entire sitcom into television infamy. On that fateful day, the king of cool donned a crown of kitsch; Fonzie jumped over a shark, and Happy Days became sad.

Before his fall, Fonzie was the incarnation of cool. Conformity, college, convention -- none of that mattered. He was an island of grit in a Great Lake of Wisconsin suburbia. His motorcycle, greasy hair, and leather jacket asserted his style. Fonzie didn't have to prove anything to anyone -- especially the American television audience. But, trading a Triumph for a gratuitous grasp at sitcom survival, the brain trust behind the creative curtain took leave of its senses and made a mockery of the Fonz.

That was the beginning of the end for Richie, Potsie, and the entire cast.

Since that unspeakable autumn evening, many seemingly immortal impresarios have followed the Fonz on his allegorical odyssey -- pushing their political prestige into obscurity. From the terror of a tank-touting Michael Dukakis, to the primal punch and scream of Howard Dean -- those who jump their proverbial shark forever place their best days behind them. They unwittingly outwit themselves and forget who and where they are -- more importantly, they forget who put them there.

Obama's unspeakable act of shark-jumpery, was not actually spoken. It would be somewhat expected to point to his quip about the Cambridge police department; but that actually occurred months after his initial descent. The fact that much ado was made of his comment confirms that he had already fallen from grace -- otherwise, no one would have bothered to care about his Cambridge calamity. Neither was it his flat attempt at "Brewski diplomacy" on the South Lawn. Ridiculous as that was, it would have been cheered and lauded by fans of the erstwhile Obama. Nor was it a matter of any other sage or seditious significance. President Obama was not selected for his substance; he was elected for his style.

Until recently, Obama spoke, taught, and presumed with impunity. He was nearly unassailable, so long as he acted and reacted within the parameters of his celebrity -- the patented Obama style. His palavering proclivity betokened his commitment to the Obama image. But on July 14, 2009, Obama left style on a hanger and tossed out the first pitch at Major League Baseball's All-Star Game, dressed in an unfortunate pair of "frumpy" jeans. "For those of you who want your president to look great in his tight jeans," he explained, "I'm sorry, I'm not the guy."

Not the guy is right.

The tragic truth of those trousers is that they confirmed the critique of the Obama election. The marginal shift to Obama from the previous Republican administration occurred not because of Obama's substance or the intricacy of his ideas; people voted for Obama's persona.

They hoped and changed for a different style. The Nation -- 53 percent of them -- wanted some slick repackaging.

Obama had it; McCain did not. The Obama mystique convinced just enough voters that Obama's style would clothe his rhetoric with materiality. As long as his style was impeccable, his message -- whatever it purported to be -- would resonate. But when style fades, persona follows.

Michael Dukakis jumped his shark in the 1988 presidential election. He staged a perfectly painful photo-op, replete with tank, helmet, and flak jacket.

This ill-conceived venture turned out to be the final maneuver of his campaign, as Dukakis plunged into electoral lethargy and an eventual landslide -- for George H.W. Bush. Dukakis: socially minded, executively experienced, compassionately calibrated? -- check. Tank-driving tough-guy? -- checkmate.

For Howard Dean, style was equally important. Governor Dean had experience and a reasonable record but that wasn't what excited his sophomoric supporters, it was his status as an irreverent party crasher. A straight-talking spoiler -- he was the doctor who made unwelcome house calls to the mainstream of the Democrat party. But on January 22, 2004, Dean's fist-pumping shriek of honest exuberance was demonstrably uncool and unacceptably unhinged.

Suddenly, the dean of dissent had a fondness for the very same mainstream that he was sent to unsettle. Suddenly, Dean was generically goofy. Suddenly, Howard Dean had jumped the shark.

For President Obama, style is everything -- was everything. And spurning style has proven an irreversible pas of the tres faux variety. If only there had been something material to those loose-fitting jeans. If there had been more, his self-deprecating admission would have been endearing. If he had ridden in on something other than a wave of words and artful execution, he might have had something to fall back on. But Obama has nothing to fall back on; his persona won't allow it. His coronation was a celebration of savoir-faire. He was the advocate of articulation, the sultan of suave, the patrician of parlance. He was supposed to usher in the era of the erudite. He was supposed to show the red-state rubes how consensus is crafted. He was supposed to embody the end of rancor. He was supposed to be the guy who looked great in his stylish jeans.

Turns out he's just "not the guy."

OUCH, Robbins!

How about the proverbial "empty suit"?

We have an Obama delegate family friend. One of my relatives asked me "How cool would it be to meet the President"?

I answered---"How boring and charisma-less is Obama?. No thanks."

The only reason her highness has so much "charm" and "charisma" is well, because the media has told us 1,000,0001 times if not 1,000,0002 times.

Listen to him speak---if he is off the cuff (like back in August in front of a Labor Rally) he says "come on" fifty times.

Other than that, he has that Tennis Match neck movement from reading Telly the Teleprompter.

Jimmy Crater came off much better than him on TV.

Yes, Jimmy Earl said "We Suck" better than Obama.

Obama has jumped the Earl.

Robert Rosencrans| 9.29.09 @ 8:04AM

Whenever you get an actor off the movie set, the kleig lights of reality can illuminate those actors with a harsh appearance. Obama has had many shark moments.

"That's above my pay grade."

Staged events with children as political props.

Lies at every opportunity.

His former city, Chicago, is plagued with gang violence. Remember, he allegedly helped organize that community. Just yesterday, a teen was beaten to death in the streets and several cell phone videos are out there if you want to see them.

In short, Obama himself is the shark, lying and deceiving the public at every turn.

susan tenofsky| 11.11.09 @ 2:41PM

Robert, Your words, "Obama himself a shark"..... So Right on,
but truly a shocker to me .... at first sight.

jack| 9.29.09 @ 8:13AM

Most of us knew this guy,who has never held down any kind of real job,no management experience was gonna be a disaster. He stopped being cool long ago, when most realized without a teleprompter he was worse the W. We have a man who appears to be completely ignorant of basic economics, knows little or nothing of US or World History if its outside the scope of how it effected African Americans. We have a guy whose genesis is the that gutter of morality called Chicago politics, and only experience is as a community org, a person who facilitates the transfer of money from the productive to unproductive, in short a person who teaches others there is something for nothing. Now he is our leader. These are dark days and this time the republic might not survive.

LQQKY| 9.29.09 @ 10:52AM

Back in the day, they were called "ward heelers" -- people who walked around with pockets full of money to insure the proper outcome. PC forced the advent of "Community Organizers"

Mike Giles| 9.29.09 @ 1:53PM

"We have a man who appears to be completely ignorant of basic economics, knows little or nothing of US or World History if its outside the scope of how it effected African Americans. "

African Americans weren't effected by the Depression, FDR's presidency, World War II, or its aftermath. Get a grip. The guy simply doesn't "know" anything that isn't on a teleprompter screen. Can't impose democracy? Ever here of Germany, Japan, and Italy?

I'm black. Does that mean I can call him a freaking idiot without being accused of racism?

birmingham| 9.29.09 @ 10:30PM

"How and when he reached his tipping point is the real cliffhanger" ...No it is not... When he responded to the Mass. police officer just like Rev. Al or Jesse would have, is when the scales dropped from the eyes of the blind.

Tim| 9.29.09 @ 10:09AM

Absolutely. He felt himself to be at the height of his power, and decided to take a victory lap on the back of that cop. Blew right up in his face like cigar with a fire cracker in it.

Mary Louise| 9.29.09 @ 8:34AM

Obama's unspeakable act of shark-jumpery, was not actually spoken.

Worth repeating.

Louis Jenkins| 9.29.09 @ 8:41AM

Impressed with "cool"? A man with "It"? Unfortunately, most of America was swindled by his appearance, and his cute 'intelligent' lines. Some of us have been around far to long to be snagged hook line and sinker by such bilge water. When you need a teleprompter to be statesman like there is a big problem. Those who supported the Messiah are as shallow as a mud hole, and are obviously more concerned with stylin' and profilin' than substance. It takes more than good cut jeans to keep a nation safe, return it to prosperity, and instill national pride. We have been left with none of those. Problem was Obama's competition had none of the needed characteristics either. None of us go to bed knowing that our fearless leader will act in the best interests of the nation. Rather than unite it's every man for himself.

erp| 9.29.09 @ 8:54AM

I agree with you about the All-Star game being the pivotal point, especially when 50,000+ plus people at the park and ????? millions watching on TV saw the catcher get in front of the plate and pick up Obama's bounced throw from the mound while the media told the lie that it didn't bounce.

If there's a conspiracy to lie about such a silly thing, most people will start wondering what else are they lying about.

My experience with community organizers is the successful ones learn how to sell and are able to evade accountability.

Obama - meet accountability. Most of us met this task master early-on and in relative obscurity. Obama is being introduced in High Def and he doesn't understand what is happening.

BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA has appeared on more news channels and tv shows than most Hollywood Movie Stars!! Could this be an external sign of OBAMA's Narcissism? OBAMA is more concerned with "self" than he is with the American People or Our Country, and his agenda is downright evil. How much longer will Americans put up with this crap? 2010, let's send Congress a strong message and remove the socialists, then 2012, let's send them their apparent leader BHO!!

Obama is the "negro in the front office" of white leftwing liberalism.

As with companies formed to allow bidding on minority or women preference contracts in the past, Obama is a front man.

Obama fits the narrative of white socialists......he hasn't much else but he has the skin tone they needed to win an election with the help of a compliant lap-dog media.

I believe the shark was jumped when the TelePrompter In Chief doubled over in front of the dictator of Saudi Arabia. All the America-hating of The Worlds Smartest Man -- the apologizing to the continent that gave us Hitler and Stalin, the assinine pursuit of "dialogue" with the Holocaust-denying nutjobs in Iran, the bailouts which turned Wall Street and GM into a welfare queens paradise at OUR expense -- it was all summed up in that one act of kowtowing. Seriously, WTF was he even thinking?

David Brooks, conservative NY Times columnist who runs to the left, described his first encounter with Obama in 2005, "I remember distinctly an image of--we were sitting on his couches, and I was looking at his pant leg and his perfectly creased pant, and I'm thinking, a) he's going to be president and b) he'll be a very good president." Yeah, just what I look for in a presidential candidate.

Ronald Reagan looked great in blue jeans when he was working at his ranch. Of course, he knew how to both work and lead in any kind of outfit, unlike the current, hopefully-one-term, occupant of the Whte House.

JimJam| 9.29.09 @ 1:39PM

The bloom was off the rose long before Obama proved to America what a straw man he is. How could any thinking person vote for a man with absolutley no practical experience for the position he sought? The Obamites slam Palin for leaving office early but she still has a couple of years more experience running a government than the Annointed One. And she looks great in jeans...

Bram| 9.29.09 @ 1:47PM

I don't think he has "jumped the shark." I think he has "gone to the well" too many times. American ears are now tuned to hear vagaries in his speech and the lawyerly fine print. His content free platitudes worked for a candidate, they don't work for a President facing no-longer-hypothetical decisions.

PolishKnight| 9.29.09 @ 2:28PM

Wonderful article, but a major quibble with his premise: "[The Fonz] didn't have to prove anything to anyone -- especially the American television audience."

Er, sorry. Wrong. I spent hours burning my young eyes on the program (not proud of that) during the 70's.

It's important to clarify, especially in comparison to Obama and liberalism, that The Fonz 's cool was a pretense to the point at which it was a hollow shell and mockery of itself. Everything he did, from the bike (the actor couldn't really ride), to the comb, and the magic punch that turned on jukeboxes was about a person whose coolness factor required a very uncool slavishness to maintaining the image. If he slipped, just once, then the illusion was gone and he'd be... nothing. Jumping the shark merely revealed what was true all along. In several episodes of the show, the Fonz illustrated his every uncool overdefensiveness towards anyone who dared to challenge him.

A wonderful allegory for smug liberalism, don't you think?

It's ironic and appropriate that the truly cool character in the program was the one liberals admire least of all: The conservative, straight laced father played by Tom Bosley. Howard ran a small family store and didn't make any effort to know the "cool" stuff of the day. But he always gave solid advice and helped out the characters when they got into trouble including being a champion poker player. The Fonz or the highly uncool "Fonzie" as he came later to be known as, routinely came to Howard to bail him out of trouble. Just like most liberals who live above their fathers' garage...

Michael L. Hauchild| 9.29.09 @ 4:38PM

PolishKnight,
Thanks for all the enlightening 1970’s era psychological and political insights; here I thought that “Happy Days” was just another brainless sitcom. Have you given some thought as to a dissertation on Sha Na Na and the classical musical contributions of Johan Sebastian Bowser?

I'd certainly agree that Obama is fluff. But criticizing a man for wearing a pair of Levi's 501 jeans makes the author appear a bit "fluffy" himself, well that and phrases such as "demonde denim", "palavering proclivity", and "deleterious disco". My suggestion is that our Elle Woods Esq. return to his freshman comp class and try again. His writing makes conservatives look stupid and shallow, that and his $250 pair of 7s.

Steven| 10.1.09 @ 2:20AM

Parody, my friend, parody. Satire? Humor? Of course with a serious side. I'm quite sure our author completed his freshman comp class handily and his light-hearted satire is refreshing.

Q.E.D.| 10.2.09 @ 8:05PM

P.J. O’Rourke is parody -- this is just bad writing. It doesn't show any respect for the reader, it's all about the author showing-off. The entire piece reads like an afterthought in support of an "I’m so clever" metaphor. Hint to Marianne: a powerful metaphor doesn't need a sidebar explanation. As for the alliteration, I get it, you're clever, again and again and again. To be honest, it’s not the writing as much as the unseemly, public display of self-gratification, recognizable to most of the world as masturbation. (how’s that, Marianne, for your “power of the metaphorical word”?) btw: how many more of the authors busy friends will be badgered into defending him?

Kent Lyon| 9.29.09 @ 2:47PM

Maybe I'm the only one here who liked the episode in which The Fonz jumped the shark (what - don't any of you act like you could do it). The fear I have is that those who elected Obama would have done so by text to an American Idol-esque hotline, if they could have, and it's a segment of our population that is growing by leaps and bounds.

Rob's observation is astute, clear, and fun, but the question remains: will it get better or worse from here? Is the response to the failed/failing, overhyped Hipster in the White House going to be a hipper Hipster? With an even more banal, superficial generation moving through our public schools now, I'm afraid the response in 2012 and beyond will be not a what-on-earth-were-we-thinking repudiation of such candidates, but instead a redoubling of efforts to find someone who can pull it off better than Obama -- if they're even capable of perceiving the failure Rob so eloquently captured here.

It wasn't just the pants, it was the pitch itself. Obama--seemingly fit and not an old man by any stretch of the imagination--throws like a girl. He couldn't even get the ball to home plate. Good grief, just about every male in America has played baseball at some point, which means at the very least, they know how to throw one. Barack's throw reminded a lot of us that he didn't grow up here; he did a lot of his growing up abroad, in places like Malaysia. Which means that the leader of our country . . . isn't really one of us.

His blather from the broadcaster's booth didn't help too much either. Having a beer with this pompous know-it-all would be a dreadful bore.

Wow. Just Wow.

I think this article contends that because President Obama's sense of clothing style is comparable to a figure on one sitcom episode, that Obama is a bad President. Now the comments kind of stray a bit into Sarah Palin and the Holocaust and Malaysia but they keep to the basic thread that ... what was the thread again?

BREDNG10| 9.30.09 @ 4:56AM

There are so many Obama moments where he jumped the shark along time ago for those who were paying attention. The apology tour, the 57 states comment, bowing to the saudi king, the constant I,Me,My whenever he talks.
Then there`s the constant berating america and americans, scolding us for not speaking french and the speaking austrian moment. There is the $40,000 pizza fly in from St.Louis, Michelle`s Quarter million $hopping jet to Paris or the half hour trip down the street for veggies that shut down Washington DC.There`s the Grey poupon cheeseburger moment, the I pod for the queen, the cambridge cop, when you`re on the tv 24/7 on multiple channels there are so many opportunities to make a fool out of your self even when covered up by the (tingly feeling) media.
Then there is the IMPORTANT stuff, like while Iran is launching missles, hiding nuke sites, threatening Isreal and America,he has the nerve to sell out our allies Poland and Czeckaslavakia,by cancelling the missle shield promissed by president Bush. Not only that he does it on the anniversary of the Russian invasion of Poland, with a 3:00am phone call by an underling. It`s a long time till 2012.
