Don’t Confirm Her!

Hillary Clinton is unfit for appointment.

The idea of Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State ought to make conservatives tremble with foreboding. It is truly bizarre to see so many on the right unquestioningly accepting a notion that just a year ago would have been laughable, namely that she is a relative “moderate” on foreign policy. And it’s even more astonishing that any reasonable news organization, or any serious senator, would consider her manifold ethical lapses as being anything other than immediately disqualifying for such a lofty appointive position.

The more comprehensive case against her appointment remains to be made, sometime between now and when she faces Senate hearings. But as a tip-of-the-iceberg, almost top-of-the-head review, consider all these reasons why she ought to be overwhelmingly rejected for the job.

* Hillary Clinton was nearly fired from the Watergate Committee staff for outrageously unethical behavior.

* Hillary Clinton was directly cited for false testimony by an independent counsel, who used prosecutorial discretion not to actually seek the indictment she deserved for prevaricating about her role in the White House Travel Office firings.

* Hillary Clinton was the recipient of the moral equivalent of bribery (every bit as bad as the $100,000 apparent payoff to U.S. Rep. “Dollar Bill” Jefferson of New Orleans) in making off with just shy of a cool 100K in her preposterous dealings in cattle futures. For more on this issue, see the excellent work of Deroy Murdock as published earlier this year in The American Spectator’s print edition.

* Hillary Clinton probably deserved to be indicted in one of the facets of the Whitewater investigation, but the infamous Rose Law Firm billing records with her fingerprints on them mysteriously disappeared until produced, quite conveniently, just days after the statute of limitations had run out on the charges that could have stemmed from the clear evidence those records contained.

* Hillary Clinton was caught on tape engaging in legally dubious coordination of campaign fundraising activities that led to charges against several others involved in the big Hollywood event at issue. For more, see “Hillary: The Movie,” by Citizens United.

* Hillary’s roles in a plethora of scandals as she and her husband left the White House were so egregious that even liberal news organizations pronounced her positively “unfit” for office. For a voluminous record of her skullduggery since the beginning of 2000, read Spectator founder R. Emmett Tyrrell’s 2007 book, The Clinton Crack-Up.

* Hillary’s presidential campaign was caught red-handed accepting huge sums of money bundled and/or donated from convicted felon Norman Hsu. In many ways the sneaky dealings with Hsu were reminiscent of other odiferous dealings with a host of other Asian donors and influence peddlers through the years, from the Riadys to Johnny Chung to John Huang to Pauline Kanchanalak to Charlie Trie.

Again, that’s only a sampling of the turgid record of Hillary Clinton’s skunkery (to coin a word) on matters of ethics. And that’s not even getting into the myriad conflicts of interest inherent in her husband’s apparent acceptance of donations for his presidential library and his eponymous foundation from numerous foreign sources, including perhaps (we will find out soon enough) the Saudi royal family. And that’s not to mention the foreign speeches, at tens of thousands of dollars a pop, paid by foreign sources, that are included in the $100 million or so the Clintons have racked up in recent years. How could such entanglements not distort Mrs. Clinton’s behavior if she is made Secretary of State?

Meanwhile, Hillary is no moderate. The evidence for that strange proposition comes only from her careful positioning, while a senator, to maintain her “viability” as a presidential candidate. Yet for every bit of hemming there has been an equal amount of hawing — except when she repeatedly refused, until utterly embarrassed, to withdraw the absurd contention that she (and Chelsea and Sinbad the comedian) had been subject to sniper fire while on one of her foreign excursions. She has a long record of advocating an expanded role for the United Nations or other international organizations in areas where conservatives see threats to American sovereignty. And in the 1980s she served on the board of, and for a time as chairman of, the leftist New World Foundation, during which time the foundation gave money to the far-left Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador, which in turn openly supported the radical-left (for all intents and purposes, communist) FMLN armed guerrillas against the official, U.S.-supported government of that country. The New World Foundation also supported a host of other far-left causes during that time period, including the radical National Lawyers Guild and also a group that in turn donated money to affiliates of the Palestinian Liberation Organization when it was known almost exclusively as a terrorist organization.

This last is fitting in retrospect, seeing as how it was the Clinton administration that first effectively gave diplomatic recognition to the PLO’s terrorist thug, Yasser Arafat.

Again, this horrendous record ought to be amply filled out in the next month or two. But the conclusion is inescapable: Hillary Clinton likely would be the most leftist American Secretary of State ever, and certainly the most ethically conflicted and unqualified. For her to be confirmed for the position would be a travesty. And it would be profoundly dangerous for American interests.

Everything that Hillary Clinton touches, turns to stone. Other than the fact that she has been a Senator for New York she has no successes.
What successes Hillary Clinton says she has accomplished has been done through deceit, and chicanery, that would put lesser beings afoul of the law.
There is nothing absolutely remarkable about Hillary Clinton, other than the fact that she is a chronic liar, unethical attorney, and despises this country and it's citizens with ever fiber of her cold and calculating being.
Hillary Clinton will be confirmed as Sec. of State with all the flourishes given to a Roman General, but the change that she will bring about will take this country to the very gates of Hell.

Kevin Riley O'Keeffe | 12.4.08 @ 6:58AM

Obviously, Hillarious Rotten Klinton is a profoundly disgusting excuse for a human being. The mere fact our Senate would seriously consider confirming her constitutes a deadly serious indictment of American democracy. Barack Obama should be impeached and removed from office if he formally nominates her (and I say that as a person who was perfectly happy to see Barack Obama defeat John McCain).

Of course, she will be Secretary of State. And of course, she will bring humiliation and disgrace to the Obama/Biden administration. One thing is for certain, whether he ever admits it or not, Barack Obama will come to regret nominating her, probably more than any other thing he does while in office. She is incapable of not betraying and disgracing anyone who aids her insane quest for power over America and the world.

Rocco| 12.4.08 @ 6:59AM

Sorry, but this is a done deal. Everything that Melvin writes is true, and she will be given full scope to transform her notion of a global village into reality. She --- just --- keeps --- coming --- back!

Pecos Pete| 12.4.08 @ 7:07AM

We are about to enjoy a period of time where Hillary/Bill will be out front and standing tall. There will be no hiding behind any bushes. For the first time Hillary will be responsible, really responsible, for something that will clearly be in the public eye.

To say the least it should be interesting.

PS: Quin, you are correct, she shouldn't be confirmed. But she will be crowned.

Jason | 12.4.08 @ 7:19AM

The question raised, Hillary don't confirm her, I agree with the article, 100%. That is if the intention is to clean up politics.

Hillary has done many of dirty dealings, and it proves that money and power puts you above the law.

The thing about politics is the players claim their rights, by negotiating their own place in the order of things.

Obama did the best he could do, by keeping her in far flung places as secretary of state.

What happend to the Health Care Program. There is no doubt that Hillary is a smart woman, and sharp in her dealings, great at covering her tracks, and getting out of sticky situations.
She has to be admired for that.

What do you do with a woman that has so much power and, a husband with the best economic past in America in recent times.

The most Laura Bush can do is write a book for five year olds, and by the time this economic problem really sets in when no one can afford to buy the book.

The question is what would she do with the money, if she made any money selling the book? would she give that money to charity? I doubt it.

Bob| 12.4.08 @ 8:31AM

So when will conservatives actually recommend something rather than hostility and complaints. Hillary is a done deal because most Republicans, who actually know her, like and trust her. Is there anything but hatespeak here at AmSpec? She would not be my favorite because she lacks the hands on experience in foreign policy. That's a lot different than the character assassination that occurs here on a daily basis.

If you guys want to rebuild the party, talk about what you expect in foreign policy and lead the game rather than follow it like losers. Set the policy rather than promote sour grapes. What do we do with China, Iran, Pakistan, Chile, Somalia, etc.? What should the conservative position be? Winners are not complainers. Stop complaining and perhaps you'll start winning.

Thomas| 12.4.08 @ 10:29AM

Bob,

I applaud your suggestion that Conservatives should set the agenda. But, let's take a hard look at reality. By your previous statement, YOU don't want the Conservative movement setting the agenda of the Republican Party, let alone the agenda of the country. As to whining about Hillary Clinton as SecState? Who cares? Who else is any better suited to the task that has a chance of being appointed by the current President-almost-elect?

As for foreign policy? Once again, who knows what we'll see. So far, the incoming administration looks a lot like the same one that around in the waning Clinton years.

Realistically, the Conservative movement doesn't have the adherents in Congress to do anything and the rest of the Republicans don't want to alienate the Democratic leadership or the majority or they will be sitting in the hallway with the smelly tourists. Hillary is a done deal and the McCains of the Senate are not going to bring any of this up.

WeR1| 12.4.08 @ 10:32AM

You just don't get it. Obama nominated Hillary expressly because after all her indiscretions are aired she will be rejected in humiliation. This will remove her as a serious opponent to Michelle in 2016!

Daphne Kenward| 12.4.08 @ 11:21AM

Here we go, we are worring about the secretary of state, why are we worried about the secretary of state. Does anybody knows what the secretary of state does?.

Has anyone got any sensible ideas of why Hillary would make a good secreatry of state, or why she would not make a good secretary of state? Ahy body with any answers?

Anybody has any ideas why Obama chose Hillary? who has the answer.

Anybody has any answers on what Obama would be trying to acheive, using Hillary, go on, what do you think?.

We have what Hillary has been accused of and no one can prove, so what do you have left?

How many think Hillary would make a good negotiator? and why.

How many think Hillary would be able to get good deals for America, to promote trade and developement to promote America to develope the economy.

How many think trade is not important as long as America can keep starting wars, and who benefits from the wars the American Government starts?

How many thinks the Arms dealers benefits the most from wars?. How many have ever heard of land mines manufacturing industry closing down?
or companies who develope and manufacture guns and bullets.

How many have a clue why killing people is so profitable? Don't forget to post your comments.

John M | 12.4.08 @ 11:22AM

Any thought that Barrack Obama and Hillary Clinton have any moderate views is wishful thinking and probably delusional. They are both very hardcore leftists, and there are probably no political issues on which they fundamentally disagree. So Hillary is a good fit for his Sec. of State. Even Rush Limbaugh thinks she is an inspired choice, so I doubt that there will be any serious Republican opposition. The biggest difference between the two is that she appears tougher and more hide-bound, whereas BO is thinner-skinned and reliant on Michelle for guidance. The on-going feud between Michelle and Hillary might occassionally produce fireworks and make it difficult for HRC to last all four years.

Troy Riser | 12.4.08 @ 11:37AM

Don't confirm her? I'm not sure--I'll need to check--but I don't think GOP legislators can do more than slow down the confirmation process. While just a rank-and-file Republican, it seems to me we need to pick our battles carefully, and Hillary's confirmation to State just isn't one of them. If we make Hillary's confirmation a line in the sand, we expend a great deal of political capital and end up looking like a pack of contrarian obstructionists--giving Obama's people a finger-pointing excuse for every failed program and policy produced by the Dem-controlled Congress and the Obama Administration. Republican senators can orchestrate a fillibuster, sure, but think of it as a pistol with a finite number of rounds in the chamber--and no, not John Wayne's or Clint Eastwood's million-bullet shooter, either. Lastly, I don't recall any conservative anywhere underestimating the ruthlessness, amorality, or mendacity of either of the Clintons. We haven't forgotten. So no, conservatives aren't nuts--and we aren't (or shouldn't be) stupid, either. It would be foolish to use Hillary's appointment to State as a causus belli with the Dems this early in the game.

Tom| 12.4.08 @ 11:52AM

Hillary in 2000 won in the Orthodox and Chasidic Jewish community of New Square by a vote of 1,400 votes to 12 for Rick Lazio. This is a community that had continuosly voted for Republican Al D'Amato previously .

Later in his last days in office Bill Clinton pardoned 4 prominent members of the community who stole tens of millions from the federal government . quid pro quo?

Mark30339| 12.4.08 @ 12:10PM

Your article indicts Obama's judgment. Given the alternative SOS choices possible from this impaired judgment, take solace that it's a devil we know.

Hank Archer| 12.4.08 @ 1:00PM

Here's a question -- How does the fact that the Secretary-designate has a pathologically promiscuous spouse impact security concerns?

Paul A'Barge | 12.4.08 @ 1:09PM

Well, ok then but what and who are the alternatives? Take a good look at the option pool and tell me that every single choice isn't far worse.

That is our (Conservatives) point ... given all her baggage, she is a relief compared to the alternatives.

Maybe you'd be happier with Dennis Kucinich but frankly I think my head would explode.

Robbins Mitchell| 12.4.08 @ 1:59PM

If Obama knows Rodham's sordid history and still insists on having her as his SoS,then he has grasped the viper unto his bosom and he deserves everything he gets as a result.....by all means let the Senate confirm her and we can just sit back and watch the sitcom unfurl....sooner or later she will do something that will reflect horribly on Obama and expose yet another example of his bad judgment and naivete'.

MartyMass| 12.4.08 @ 2:32PM

Hussein (and certainly, Emanuel) lnow that neither Hillie nor Willie can be trusted although both Hussein and Hillie are Alinski disciples.
Hillie's appointment is Hussein Rovian scheme to get rid of Hillie (and, mayve, Willie) once and for all. In about six months something will happen that will be blamed on Hillie. She'll be asked/forced to resign a nd with no Senate seat to return to, will seldom be heard from again.

David| 12.4.08 @ 3:24PM

Troy is correct. Fighting Hillary's confirmation is not worth it. Save our time, money, and all other resources and wrath for the obvious social engineers Obama will try to appoint to the appellate courts and Supreme Court. The days of Republicans going along with the Dems on ultra-liberal appointments such as Ruth Bader-Ginsberg need to come to a screeching halt (I believe she was confirmed with about a 97 to 3 vote with only a few "no" votes from Repubs).

The judge issue is one on which the vast majority of the voters agree with Repubs. Fight the good fights.

Marc Jeric| 12.4.08 @ 4:00PM

During her 2-hour testimony in front of a grand jury, La Clinton said 149 times "I don't remember" and "I don't recall". That's 149 divided by 120 minutes - about 1-1/4 times per minute! How astute! How intelligent! How smart is that born criminal - not to mention her incredible success as a cattle futures trader!

Dustoff| 12.4.08 @ 4:27PM

I'm with Troy too.
Let her have the job. You know she will mess up and it will not only prove to all she is worthless, but her stain shall also fall on Obama.
Let's see how they handle N. Korea, we saw what the did last time.

Sit back and enjoy the popcorn.

Zeke| 12.4.08 @ 4:55PM

I wonder where the Constitution went? If it were still around and anybody read it, they would discover in Article 1 Section 6 Clause 2 that Hillary is barred from holding the office. It's called the Emolument Clause.

Alan Brooks| 12.4.08 @ 5:34PM

Hillary is actually worse than she is described, but that makes her a good politician. FDR was a lying bastard but even cons call him great.
I don't get specific enough (for brevity's sake) here so will zero in on just one encouraging thing about Hillary: she hates Iran's regime.
Touche'!

Paul Nelson| 12.4.08 @ 6:09PM

MartyMass: I think that you have it precisely right. Obama wants Clinton to be confirmed as Secretary of State, to screw up so that he can fire her.

"Maybe you'd be happier with Dennis Kucinich"

Yes, as a matter of fact, I would. At least honest-t0-God liberals are right about a few things. Neo-liberal/neo-conservative, faux centrists like Hillary Clinton, Joe Lieberman, John McCain, and Arlen Specter, are always wrong. They disagree with the conservatives when the conservatives are right, and they disagree with the liberals when the liberals are right. At least Kucinich voted against the Iraq War. At least he gives a damn about our civil liberties. He might be wrong about a lot of things, but at least he's not an evil, always-lying snake who whores himself out to highest corporate or foreign bidder. People like Kucinich and Nader are the loyal opposition to conservatism. People like Hillarious are enemies of America. Big difference.

Patrick| 12.4.08 @ 8:56PM

Hillary Clinton will be a disaster as Secretary of State. Most of Obama's cabinet are Clinton cronies. I see her as quite willing and capable in doing irreversable damage, both to the nation and the Obama Administration. But America voted for Obama, and a whole bunch Democrats in Congress, so I consider it a total loss anyway.

Meh, since nothing can nor should be done, at least I'll enjoy listening to a fiddle by firelight.

Patrick| 12.4.08 @ 8:58PM

FDR's greatness as a president began and ended with only one thing: repealing Prohibition.

Kevin Dunn| 12.4.08 @ 9:33PM

FDR made plenty of mistakes in dealing with the Depression, and left a toxic legacy of socialism and social erngineering. But at least he got America geared up and by the logic of events into World War II on the right side, against the wishes of the America First nutjobs and anti-Semites, who if they had got their way would have had us speaking German and Japanese by now. That's his greatness.

DaveS| 12.5.08 @ 8:32AM

There are some very fine comments above. Mine: the Senate Republicans should filibuster the final vote - not bothering with nominee hearing (generous word) participation. Hillary Clinton has been in the running for anything because of a man - our 'illustrious' and ever-tiresome former (to us, not to him) President. I almost feel sorry for Obama for striking up deals during the summer. Thank you, TAS.

Bob A| 12.5.08 @ 10:26AM

So your saying a Democratically controlled Senate 58-59 seat majority will take you seriously and not confirm Hillary!?

It doesn't matter what conservatives think. If amnesty of 20 million illegals happens, it won't matter what conservatives think for 15-20 years!

Srini V| 12.5.08 @ 11:23AM

I noticed that none cared to speculate that 0bama decided to appoint Hitlery as SecState because he still sees her as a threat/rival--basically, he wants to send her OUTSIDE the country for the bulk of his term, so she can't do mischief inside.

On the matter of the consequences of such (Klinton is likely to antagonise may world leaders and FM's), he's using Daffy Duck's mindset of "consequences, monsequences--so long as she can't stab me in front..."

James| 12.5.08 @ 1:23PM

tony| 12.5.08 @ 4:10PM

Zeke:

In the past 2 years, the Supreme Court has rewritten the 5th amendment takings clause and repudiated close to 700 years of collective wisdom by granting enemy combatants habeas corpus protections. Do you think a silly little thing like Article 1 Section 6 Clause 2 of the Constitution will get in the way of this appointment?

Daphne Kenward| 12.5.08 @ 4:21PM

I have drawn my conclusion, if George W Bush was president for 8 years, what's wrong with Hillary being secretary of state. At least she is smarter.

tony| 12.5.08 @ 4:52PM

Daphne:

Someone even smarter than Hillary, William F. Buckley Jr., once said "I'd rather entrust the government of the United States to the first 400 people listed in the Boston telephone directory than to the faculty of Harvard University. "

The point is, of course, that if one's ideas are wrong, then no matter how smart you are, the ideas will fail. We all know Hillary is an intelligent woman, but she simply has bad ideas.

DaveS| 12.5.08 @ 6:23PM

Dear Bob A: apparently you are unaware that it takes 60 votes to end a filibuster of a Senate vote. If it came to a vote, she'd be confirmed. Don't tell me you've never heard the Dems stop Senate votes using the filibuster.

tony| 12.5.08 @ 10:12PM

DaveS and Bob A:

I'm not really sure where either of you are coming from on this. All I will say is that anyone who believes that Mitch McConnell can sustain a filibuster with 42 votes, several of whom are rinos, has found a dealer with some good s#*!. Besides, as a senator, her friends in that country club will not oppose her. Here's my prediction: 100-0, unless of course Byrd sleeps through the vote.

Kevin Riley O'Keeffe | 12.6.08 @ 1:24AM

"FDR made plenty of mistakes...But at least he got America geared up and by the logic of events into World War II on the right side, against the wishes of the America First nutjobs and anti-Semites, who if they had got their way would have had us speaking German and Japanese by now. That's his greatness. "

It takes a truly profound level of ignorance to imagine the Axis powers would have won the Second World War, absent U.S. intervention. Consequently, 400K American military personnel died for no practical purpose. Oh, but the America Firsters were all "nutjobs." And all this bluster we get from from the neocons about "anti-Semites" has also gotten very tiresome. There has never been any sort of organized suppression of the Jewish community within the USA. If a some people want to hold disdainful attitudes towards the two percent of the U.S. population that is Jewish, why is that treated as a sin right up there with serial murder and child molestation? Kansas ain't the Ukraine. If some guy doesn't much like Portagees or Polacks, no one gives a flying you-know-what, but if its Jews he dislikes, suddenly he's another Hitler. BS. B-effing-S. That just ain't true. You know what is true? Jews whine way too damn much. They've been treated just fine in this country, and still, I can't go 24 hours without hearing about "anti-Semitism," unless I just turn off the tv and the computer, and cease reading all periodical publications. Quit your damn whining. This is America, not Czarist Russia, nor Nazi Germany. If there's too much "anti-Semitism" in this country for your tastes, then get the Hell out! Seriously. Its hard to imagine a more philo-Semitic nation than the USA, short of Israel itself, so if this country isn't good enough for you, please don't tell us about it. Just go.
