Twitter Refuses to Show Daily Wire Documentary After Signing Agreement
by

Twitter is refusing to show the Daily Wire’s documentary What is a Woman? on the claim that the movie involves “misgendering” after a father in the film calls his 14-year-old daughter “her.”

According to Daily Wire CEO Jeremy Boreing, the Daily Wire and Twitter had signed an agreement to show the documentary for free on the social media platform in honor of the film’s one-year anniversary.

In a recent Twitter thread, Boreing said Twitter offered the company a package deal to show the movie on a dedicated events page. Twitter would also promote the film to every user.

Boreing said Twitter backed out of the agreement after asking to screen the film to check for audience triggers.

“Twitter let us know that not only could we no longer purchase the package they offered, they would no longer provide us any support and would actually limit the reach of the film and label it as ‘hateful conduct’ because of ‘misgendering,’” Boreing tweeted.

According to Boreing, the Daily Wire “reminded” Twitter that it had “removed ‘misgendering’ from their policy.”

In April of 2023, CBS News reported that Twitter changed its policy on misgendering trans individuals, noting that the social media company would “only put warning labels on some tweets” that might be considered harassment.

Boreing asserted that Twitter’s policy, while physically changed, in practice remained the same.

“Twitter clarified they only removed ‘misgendering’ from their policy because they didn’t need to be that specific, but that they still consider ‘misgendering’ abuse and harassment,” Boering tweeted. “They gave us the opportunity to comply. We declined.”

Matt Walsh, star of What is a Woman? and podcaster for the Daily Wire, also expressed his frustration with Twitter’s censorship and called on Elon Musk to intervene in the situation.

“Twitter has decided that our film doesn’t contribute to a ‘healthy conversation,’” Walsh tweeted. “The only healthy conversation about this subject is one where everyone agrees with trans activists. Is this what free speech means on a free platform?”

While stating that he prefers using people’s “preferred pronouns” as a matter of courtesy, Musk affirmed that the Daily Wire still had a right to air the film on Twitter.

“This was a mistake by many people at Twitter,” Musk tweeted in response to Boreing. “It is definitely allowed.”

According to Walsh, Twitter is still censoring the film, despite Musk’s response. The Daily Wire still intends, however, to show the documentary for free on Twitter at 8 p.m. EST.

“We will see what happens tonight,” Walsh tweeted.
