The Real Deadline for a Nuclear Deal with Iran is January 20, 2017
by

As you probably know by now, today’s deadline for a framework of a nuclear deal with Iran has been extended by 24 hours.

Leading up to the extension was more concessions by the Obama Administration and its P5 + 1 partners including keeping the Fandow enrichment facility open, putting off disclosing their “potential military dimensions” of their nuclear program to the IAEA indefinitely and all the while Iran is hardening its position.

If they don’t reach an agreement in 24 hours, well, no big deal. White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest says today’s deadline is “arbitrary”. This a fortnight after stating the Obama Administration and its P5 + 1 partners would walk away from the negotiating table if an agreement was not reached.

I think it’s also safe to say the June 30th deadline for a final agreement is also arbitrary. Assuming they don’t get a deal by June 30th, it will give the Obama Administration ample opportunity to blame Republicans and make preparations to villify Israel at the UN that would make the Durban Conference look like a B’nai Brith picnic.

While all this is happening I would expect the Obama Administration and Iran to continue negotiating in secret as they have previously and then eventually bring it back out in the open.

As long as the Obama Administration is desperate for a deal and Iran is happy to string them along the only deadline that is actually meaningful would be January 20, 2017. It would not surprise me if the Obama Administration keeps working to get a deal until its final minutes in office.
