The Democrats Use Churches to Deliver Votes for McAuliffe

The Democrats like to keep faith out of politics even as they impose politics on faith. They are happy to harness the power of religion for their own political purposes. Their usually strict views on the “separation of church and state” don’t stop them from campaigning in churches. The most recent example of this Democratic hypocrisy comes from Virginia, where the normally secularist Terry McAullife is using a “souls to the polls” strategy to drum up votes for his gubernatorial run.

The last refuge of a flailing Democrat is apparently religion. “More than 300 Black churches across Virginia will hear from Vice President Kamala Harris between Sunday and election day in a video message that will air during morning services as part of an outreach effort aimed to boost McAuliffe,” reports CNN. “In the video, first obtained by CNN, Harris said her time growing up in Oakland’s 23rd Avenue Church of God taught her it was a ‘sacred responsibility’ to ‘lift up the voices of our community.’”

“Harris implores congregants to vote following church service,” reports CNN. “The McAuliffe campaign has embraced ‘Souls to the Polls,’ block-party style events featuring top campaign surrogates after church near polling locations, to drive voter turnout. This election is the first year Virginians will be able to vote on Sunday.”

Keep holy the Sabbath by voting for McAuliffe — that’s Harris’ remarkable pitch. Never mind that his campaign is drenched in unholiness, from his support for transgenderism to his support for late-term abortions. In his previous stint as governor, he routinely vetoed religious freedom bills.

When Donald Trump proposed eliminating the Johnson Amendment, which bars political activity by churches, Democrats squawked. But now McAuliffe is flouting it to strengthen his shaky campaign.

“Experts say Kamala Harris church video supporting Virginia Democrat may be illegal,” reports ABC. “Several experts and attorneys have noted that if the video is indeed played in churches it would be a violation of the Internal Revenue Service’s ‘Johnson Amendment,’ which is in the agency’s 501(c)3 tax code. The Johnson Amendment explicitly states that those organizations with tax-exempt status under its 501(c)3 code cannot publish or distribute statements ‘on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office.’”

Former Virginia Governor Douglas Wilder scoffed at the video, chalking it up to McAuliffe’s desperate reliance upon the black vote.

“Wilder understands what’s at stake in the race between McAuliffe, who served as governor from 2014 to 2018, and Republican challenger Glenn Youngkin. Calling in Harris, the first vice president of color, to gin up black support shows Democrats know the race is deadlocked,” reports the Washington Examiner. “In Virginia, the Democratic candidate has to have a strong turnout of black Americans. And if [McAuliffe] doesn’t get that, you’re going to see some problems,’ said Wilder, who spoke from his home in Richmond.” Wilder added: “What reasons do they have to turn out?”

They certainly don’t have any religious reason to vote for McAuliffe. His impious transgender policies alone should dissuade them from supporting him. It takes considerable gall for him to go into churches and woo voters whose moral and religious views he intends to thwart.

Joining him at his “soul to the polls” events is the Georgia politician Stacey Abrams. “Abrams said when she first began running for office, she felt mixing politics and church was bad,” according to the Associated Press. “But, she said, her mother eventually reminded her that ‘politics is always in the church’ and her father said that the Bible ‘is one of the most intense political texts ever written.’”

In other words, the Democrats don’t mind mixing politics and religion as long as that yields them votes and allows them to enlist churches in their unholy causes. The Democrats are the party against prayer in schools but in favor of voting on Sundays.

Their interest in religion only revives during campaign season. But once they have bamboozled the religious into voting for them, they go back to their customary secularism. They lecture Americans that religion must never influence politics, all the while inserting politics into religion. Should McAuliffe succeed in driving “souls to the polls,” it will mark a new low in the party’s exploitation of religion.
