It may seem out of place as we approach a holiday celebrating the birth of the Prince of Peace to be reviewing a book on boxing, which is a good deal less than a peaceful activity. But within living memory of many Americanos — myself included — boxing was a popular and respected sport with a large following here and abroad. Books about Christmas, or with Christmassy themes, can be saccharine. Consider a couple that aren’t. Some may argue that the Willie Nelson book Pretty Paper comes close to it in a couple of places. But we give America’s favorite troubadour a bit more latitude than others, do we not? And sentimental or no, the book has its strengths. Willie Nelson fans — you don’t have to go far to find these — will love it.
