“‘Stomped’ by the Tea Party”

That’s the headline screaming from the home page of Spain’s second-largest and supposedly center-right newspaper El Mundo (read it here). Accompanied by the best photo of the incident for the job at hand, the piece is disgracefully unbalanced, and dripping with evidence that the reporter and his editors share what I understand to be not only the common misunderstanding of the Tea Party in Europe, but contempt for that which they do not understand (yet feel wildly threatened by nonetheless).

The two assaults last night are unaceptable. Even if it just appears in quarters such as El Mundo that there was one, which was emblematic. Choice quotes include:

“Democrat candidate Jack Conway, who has cut in recent weeks the initial lead of Rand Paul” — really? — “condemned the attitude of the ‘matones’ [approximately translated as ‘thugs’]”.

If you read Spanish or want to run the story, and the swamp of comments, through a translation program, feel free. And read the article’s equally hysterical sub-heads. And the companion pieces “Who is who in the Tea Party”, by another notoriously unsympathetic writer, and “What is the Tea Party?” which debates whether the Tea Party is “extreme right” (Euro-code for Nazi) or merely “ultra-conservative”.

Remember the Euro-press (and, come to think of it, much of our own) during the George W. Bush administration? An awful lot more of the same reversion to form is what you should expect to deal with beginning right…about…now. I suppose in memory of Peter Jennings we might call this a collective tantrum.
