Business Insider has an interesting report on a division among religious right leaders over who should be president — and first lady.
Influential evangelical leader James Dobson set off the fireworks at this weekend’s Christian Right summit, giving a speech that lavished praise on Karen Santorum and asked whether Americans really wanted Callista Gingrich – “a woman who was a man’s mistress for eight years” – as their First Lady, according to sources who attended the meeting.
The summit, which ended up endorsing Rick Santorum, left Newt Gingrich supporters miffed, complaining that “the conference was largely a charade, with the outcome predetermined in favor of Santorum.”
Whether that’s true or just sour grapes, this is the second election in a row where social conservative leaders’ strategies have been baffling. Instead of throwing their weight behind Santorum when he was on the rise coming out of Iowa, they let his momentum stall and hen waited until he was fighting Ron Paul for third place in South Carolina to actually endorse him. And now Newt Gingrich is surging.
