Politico‘s Tim Mak profiles Michigan representative Justin Amash, who’s generally thought to be following in Ron Paul’s footsteps as a libertarian Republican. Amash is interesting because he votes based on what he thinks is both prudent and constitutional, with the result that he votes against the GOP almost as much as Paul himself. It also means that he often votes in ways that hurt his own political preferences — as with the vote to defund Planned Parenthood.
Mak’s article is well worth reading, as is Jim Antle’s from The American Conservative. Amash reads every bill, and he explains each of his votes on his facebook profile, which I’ve found to be helpful in a number of cases.
