New Hampshire’s Democrat Senator Jeanne Shaheen doesn’t think much of gun owners, particularly those who own AR-15s:
The fact is, the AR-15, the gun that (Omar) Mateen used, that’s a weapon of war; it’s advertised as being able do technologically advances in killing people that previous weapons have been unable to do and somebody who is buying that kind of a weapon isn’t buying it for target shooting. They’re not buying it to go out and hunt deer. You don’t need an AK-47 or an AR-15 to hunt deer. They’re buying it to do bad things and we need to recognize that and address it.
To start with, the Orlando ISIS terrorist didn’t use an AR-15. He used a Sig Sauer MCX. But why let the facts get in the way of an argument?
There are between 5 to 10 million legally owned AR-15s in this country. I don’t know how many of those AR-15s can be found in New Hampshire, but when one purchases an AR-15 in the Granite State the law requires an FBI background check. Surely Shaheen, who was Governor of New Hampshire for three terms, is aware of this fact. In which case, why insult thousands of your own constituents?
Shaheen was re-elected in 2014 so maybe she thinks she can get away with insulting her constituents. Of course, NH’s Republican incumbent Kelly Ayotte is in a tough re-election fight against current Granite state Governor Maggie Hassan who has been trying to put Ayotte on the defensive for voting against expanded background checks. Ayotte would be wise to ask Hassan if she agrees with Shaheen’s assessment that New Hampshire voters who legally own AR-15s want to do “bad things” with them. Ayotte would be wise to keeping asking until Hassan distances herself from Shaheen.
