Kentucky Senator Rand poll announced for president. Yet two hours earlier — before his announcement?
MSNBC had this headline:
Donald Trump beats Rand Paul, Chris Christie in poll
So what to make of this poll from Monmouth University?
The race for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination is wide — and I do mean wide — open. In this corner it appears that there are two sets of candidates: Insiders versus Outsiders. Insiders? Think Jeb Bush or Chris Christie. Outsiders? That would be Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, and yes, Rand Paul and others.
It is, of course, way, way too soon to see how this will all end. But it is reasonable to suspect that there will be one Insider versus one Outsider left standing for the final fight. Think Reagan versus George H.W. Bush in 1980. By definition the Outsider will be what they call in the world of card playing the wild card. Past Outsiders? Candidates with names like Obama, Clinton (Bill), Reagan, Carter, John F. Kennedy and….well, you get the idea. In the day, each of those were staunchly opposed by their respective party establishments — and then, shockingly! — they had their hand on the swearing-in Bible.
Could Donald Trump win? Of course he could. The gates are wide open and the race is on. Count no one out. No one.
Or you’re fired.
