Let’s be plain.
As noted in this space a mere year ago, the American Left has a serious anti-Semitism problem. In the day, I said this:
Minnesota Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar tweeted out blatantly anti-Semitic messages, using what fellow Democrat and New York Congressman Eliot Engel called “the anti-Semitic trope of “Jewish money.” Omar had suggested that AIPAC — the American Israel Public Affairs Committee — was paying Members of Congress to be pro-Israel.”
I added this:
But there is more — much more — to this rise in anti-Semitism than Congresswoman Omar’s anti-Semitic tweets. The hard fact is that anti-Semitism is metastasizing across the American Left, and has been for years. Recall that in 2015 Mark Levin made a point on his radio show of calling out anti-Semitism in the Obama White House, saying this:
“I think it’s time for a national discussion about Barack Obama and his administration and the stench of anti-Semitism that’s in this White House….
“There’s been a relentless attack on Benjamin Netanyahu hatched from the Oval Office.… We don’t have a media in this country, we have propagandists. There’s a few journalists who stand out but that’s not ‘the media’ that’s a few journalists. And that’s what we have and they repeat what Obama tells them to repeat … that’s why I call them the praetorian guard media. Obama has a hate on for Netanyahu, he has a hate on for Israel. And I firmly believe he’s anti-Semitic. What other person would hang around with a Jeremiah Wright, a Rashid Khalidi … an Al Sharpton? Would reach out to the Muslim Brotherhood and bring them into the Oval Office, reach out to this group CAIR and bring them into the administration in various capacities? What kind of president would treat the Islamo-Nazi regimes with kid gloves, as a matter of fact in the case of Iran negotiate with them, beg them, bend over backwards for a deal. Israel sees Obama’s handiwork in the Middle East.”
Later, interviewed by Sean Hannity on the Hannity television show, Mark added this:
“The fact of the matter is, Sean, I want to say this and this is important. Eric Holder said that this nation is full of cowards because we won’t have a discussion about race. Well, I think this nation needs to have a discussion about what’s going on in this White House and this administration about anti-Semitism. Because this White House and it’s reaching out to Sharpton, the Muslim Brotherhood, CAIR, all these radical nut jobs and groups, their policies which are — it’s not just Netanyahu. They’re willing to throw Israel over the side for the Islam regime in Tehran.
This president’s former relationships with [Rashid] Khalidi, the professor in Columbia now, with Wright the so-called reverend from Chicago. This president has a lot to answer for, and his conduct is contemptible. And I don’t care how many liberal Democrat donors — hold on now. I don’t care how many liberal Democrat donors he has who are Jewish. He can hide behind them all he wants. But Mr. Holder, Mr. Obama, let’s have a national discussion about the anti-Semitism that reeks from your administration.”
Now? Now, a full year later from that column, with Sen. Bernie Sanders leading the Democratic pack for the 2020 presidential nomination, Mark Levin has dared to call out the far-left, socialist Sanders for calling Israel and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu racist. And for so doing, Mark is written up at, of all places, Mediaite — this way. The headline:
Mark Levin Goes on Nuts Tear Against Bernie Sanders, Calls Him an Anti-Semite With an ‘Islamo-Nazi Mentality’
The story, written by Ken Meyer, says, in part, this, bold print supplied by me:
Conservative radio host and Fox News personality Mark Levin checked off all the fear-mongering boxes on Tuesday by declaring Senator Bernie Sanders an America-hating anti-Semite who’s leading the Democratic Party into “embracing an Islamo-Nazi mentality.”
As Levin railed against the media on his show by calling the press dishonest “opinionists,” he accused reporters of “giving Bernie Sanders a pass on his deep-rooted anti-Semitism and the deep-rooted anti-Semitism of a number of his top surrogate lieutenants.”
Meyer concluded by quoting some of what Mark said, as here:
I’m telling you the truth. And the kind of people Bernie Sanders is pulling around him could come out of the Third Reich. That’s right, I said it. The way these people talk and the things that they say. Somebody has to have the guts to point it out. Somebody has to have the guts to speak out. Even though I’m condemned, left and right, too damn bad. People always say, “Why didn’t anyone say anything?” Well, I’m saying it. The man leading the Democrat Party right now is embracing an Islamo-Nazi mentality when it comes to the Jewish state. He hates America.
Meyer’s last sentence: “Bernie Sanders is Jewish.”
Well, gee. So is Mark Levin.
The kicker here, though, was the closing hat tip on the article. It read as follows:
Translation: Mediaite is giving a hat tip to Media Matters. You recall Media Matters, yes? Recall this from Alan Dershowitz a few years back. The Fox News headline:
Harvard professor Dershowitz says Media Matters has crossed line ‘into anti-semitism’
The story begins,
Harvard University professor Alan Dershowitz alleged Friday that Media Matters has “crossed the line into anti-semitism” by tolerating an employee who uses charged language to criticize supporters of Israel.
Dershowitz, a liberal Democrat who is a staunch supporter of Israel, first started speaking out against the liberal media watchdog group last month. He went further in an interview on Fox News, saying Friday that Media Matters has crossed the line into “bigotry.”
Why was Dershowitz — a liberal Democrat and staunch supporter — saying this? Because Media Matters had run a piece by a staffer — who, yes, was Jewish — attacking Americans who supported Israel as “Israel Firsters.” From the story, quoting Dershowitz:
“When you accuse Jews of dual loyalty, you invoke a canard that goes back hundreds of years and falls into the category of anti-semitism,” Dershowitz said. “To the extent that Media Matters hired him to do that and is tolerating him, they have crossed the line into anti-semitism.”
There was more. The Daily Caller turned up anti-Semitic blog posts from a Media Matters executive, including a reference to “several bags of Jewish gold.” The Caller also had this startling statement from Dershowitz on how he came across Media Matters material:
You know where I get their stuff? I read their stuff mostly on a neo-Nazi website that sends it to me.
Wow. But in truth, that much is old news.
What is news is that to disagree with Mark Levin on the substance — that the American Left, with Sanders in a leading position, is pushing serious anti-Semitism and anti-Israeli racism — is dealt with by sourcing from Media Matters. With Media Matters long ago flagged by Alan Dershowitz on the left and the Daily Caller on the right as having, itself, a serious anti-Semitism problem that is, at this point, emblematic of the larger American Left — the larger American Left of which Bernie Sanders is now, arguably, the new leader.
There is hardly anything “nuts” about Mark Levin, or any sensible American, standing up for America’s longtime democratic ally in the middle of the Middle East. Not to mention opposing anti-Semitism and racism. (And in fact, racism is exactly what anti-Semitism is.)
What’s nuts for sure is to hat tip Media Matters in an attack on Mark Levin when he is defending Israel and attacking anti-Semitism and racism — and thinking that gives you credibility.
