Last Friday night, a woman named Christy Sheats shot and killed her two daughters Taylor, 22 and Madison, 17, outside their home in a Houston suburb before local authorities shot and killed her. To make matters worse, the incident occurred on the 45th birthday of the girls’ father, Jason Sheats, who pleaded with his wife not to kill them.
What an utterly horrific nightmare. But take a look at how some mainstream media outlets have characterized the murders:
The Daily Beast: Don’t Take My Guns, Christy Sheats Said. Then She Shot Her Daughters
And no gun control story would be complete without the participation of the New York Daily News:
The narrative here is loud and clear. “Pro-gun” or “gun rights” advocates are violent people who are not to be trusted with their opinions or their weapons.
Of course, I don’t deny Christy Sheats expressed views against gun control on her Facebook page. But there’s also no denying that the Facebook page of Craig Steven Hicks, the man who murdered three Muslims in North Carolina sang the praises of Rachel Maddow and The Southern Poverty Law Center. Needless to say, The New York Daily News did not see fit to mention these details in their headline of that shooting.
I would hasten to add that Floyd Lee Corkins, the man responsible for the shooting at the Family Research Council in August 2012 admitted he did so because the Southern Poverty Law Center listed the FRC as a hate group.
And lest we forget, Omar Mateen, the man who pledged allegiance to ISIS as he killed 49 people at The Pulse nightclub in Orlando just over a fortnight ago was a registered Democrat.
I point this out not because I think Democrats who are avid Rachel Maddow viewers and support the Southern Poverty Law Center are a threat to the public. In fact, just the opposite. We may find their views annoying and exasperating, but I am confident that 99% of this demographic isn’t going to wantonly commit murder. Just as I am confident that 99% of gun owners who believe in the Second Amendment aren’t going to commit filicide.
In other words, I don’t think most Rachel Maddow, Southern Poverty Center loving Democrats are to be confused with Craig Steven Hicks, Floyd Lee Corkins or Omar Mateen and nor do most conservatives. It would be nice if liberals and their mainstream media allies wouldn’t treat every law abiding gun owner in this country as if they were Christy Sheats.
