Lightfoot vs. Lightfoot: Chicago Mayor Wrestles Self in ‘Civil Discourse’ Showdown

In a match worthy of the old World Wrestling Federation, Windy City Mayor Lori Lightfoot pinned herself to the mat while engaging in self-contradiction over softer language in civic affairs.

Toxicity in our public discourse is a thing that I think we should all be concerned about,” Lightfoot said last week. “We’ve got to find a common sense and a purpose,” she added, urging Chicagoans to “focus on what brings us together and not what tears us apart.”

But this Lightfoot soon got stomped on by the meaner, rougher Lightfoot as observers recalled the latter’s total lack of civil discourse.

F**k Clarence Thomas,” heavyweight Lightfoot had screamed at a Pride rally in Grant Park on June 25, the day after the Supreme Court reversed the 1973 pro-abortion Roe v. Wade decision. Two days later, she posted a photo via Twitter of her pointing to someone wearing a “F**k Clarence Thomas” shirt. Lightfoot commented above the picture: “I said what I said.”

Lightfoot’s comments appalled leading Chicagoans.

“There are ways to criticize without inciting people to mob action,” said Paul Vallas, former CEO of Chicago Public Schools. “You’re almost trying to agitate people to violence when you think about it.”

Businessman Willie Wilson concurred. He told the Chicago Sun-Times: “Using that kind of language just, in my opinion, encourages violence.”

Earlier, after someone (who still needs to be identified, publicly sacked, and disbarred) leaked a draft of Justice Samuel Alito’s opinion in the case, Lightfoot said: “This moment has to be a call to arms.”

But incivility is nothing new for Lightfoot.

In May 2021, Lightfoot announced that she would grant one-on-one interviews only to journalists of color. She decried the “overwhelming whiteness and maleness of Chicago media.” Such remarks are not “what brings us together.”

Lightfoot famously berates her staff with heavy-handed demands and a volcanic temper.

In June 2021, she directed her employees to submit memos to her at least 48 hours before related decisions are due. “I have asked nicely,” she wrote. “Now I am done.” Adjacent to those words, she sent her employees a photo of several documents that had been torn into ribbons.

That January, Lightfoot emailed her scheduler. “I need office time everyday!” she wrote 16 times. “Have I made myself clear, finally?!” she repeated 13 times.

Lightfoot’s hushed calls for civility and shouted cries of incivility perfectly fit the Democrat-Left’s corresponding hypocrisy. They expect civility from the Right while treating their opponents with ugly rhetoric, rampant lies, intimidation, threats, and violence.

The Democrat-Left simply could have stated their policy differences with former President Donald J. Trump. Instead, they spent three years trying to prove that he is a Russian agent, which he is not and never was. They called him an anti-Semite, never mind his Jewish daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren — all of whom Trump welcomed into the White House. And, as Refuse Fascism’s Sunsara Taylor told Tucker Carlson on February 22, 2017, barely a month after Trump was inaugurated: Trump “could arguably be worse than Hitler.”

Black Lives Matter members famously marched and chanted: “What do we want? Dead cops. When do we want them? Now!” Cop-hater Ismaaiyl Brinsley, 28, heeded their call in December 2014, driving from Baltimore to New York City and assassinating NYPD officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos with fatal bullets to their skulls as they sat in their patrol car in Brooklyn.

As the George Floyd riots consumed the entire country in June 2020, Attorney General Maura Healey (D- Mass.) recklessly announced: “America is burning. But that’s how forests grow.”

Then-Sen. Kamala Harris notoriously raised money for a Minneapolis bail fund that sprang numerous Floyd rioters from jail so they could return to the streets and bring down the country.

Meanwhile, conservative Supreme Court justices continue to be harassed at their homes by left-wing demonstrators who do not limit their First Amendment protests to the Court’s Capitol Hill palace of justice, where they have every right to shout whatever they want.

Earth to Attorney General Merrick Garland: Intimidating federal judges at their residences, particularly to influence their jurisprudence, violates 18 U.S. Code § 1507.

Also, this undue pressure on members of America’s highest court comes from the same leftists who moan that “Republicans are demolishing our political norms,” “The GOP is trying to end democracy,” “The next election might be our last,” etc.

Look who’s trashing norms now.

It took House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) at least two weeks to bring to the floor a bill that passed the Senate unanimously to spend money to protect the SCOTUS justices. Fully 27 House Democrats voted against this measure.

All of this after would-be assassin Nicholas Roske, 26, surrendered to law enforcement officers protecting Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s home. Police say that Roske flew from California to Washington, D.C., and was arrested on June 22 by Montgomery County, Maryland, police officers in front of Kavanaugh’s home.

With him, according to accusations filed in federal court, were a suitcase and backpack that contained lock-picking and burglary tools, a Glock pistol, 37 rounds of ammunition, an aiming laser, and a pair of boots with padded outer soles that could allow stealth movement,” the Washington Post reported. Citing court records, its story added that Roske also was nabbed with “a black mask, duct tape, hard-knuckled gloves and a ‘black tactical chest rig with pepper spray and black Gerber knife.’”

In a museum-grade example of journalistic malpractice, this attempted assassination of an associate justice of the Supreme Court elicited not even one second of discussion on the subsequent Sunday’s weekly political talk shows on ABC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, or NBC. If one did not tune into Fox News Channel, it would be forgivable to be totally ignorant of this intended murder of one of America’s nine justices.

Just last week, Kavanaugh had to depart through the back door of Washington, D.C.’s Morton’s Steakhouse after protesters gathered to aggravate him as he dined.

“Honorable Supreme Court Justice Kavanaugh and all of our other patrons at the restaurant were unduly harassed by unruly protestors while eating dinner at our Morton’s restaurant,” said a spokesman for the eatery. “Politics, regardless of your side or views, should not trample the freedom at play of the right to congregate and eat dinner.”

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York) typified via Twitter her party’s response to this outrage: Poor guy. He left before his soufflé because he decided half the country should risk death if they have an ectopic pregnancy within the wrong state lines. It’s all very unfair to him. The least they could do is let him eat cake.”

By the way, if two College Republicans frowned at liberal Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor as she had dinner, CNN and MSNBC would interrupt their programming to denounce them, dox them, demand their expulsion from their universities, and then cry on air for 48 hours about the relentless rise of fascism in America.

In response to all of this, President Joe Biden said the other day: “Keep protesting.”

One wonders if Biden and the Democrats really want the conservatives on the Court to stay alive. If so, they should send a clear signal that they do. Right now, this is ambiguous, and it shouldn’t be.

As usual, Democrats scream, “Civility!” at the Right while unleashing the hounds on the Left.
