Here’s Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania questioning Congressional Budget Office director Douglas Elmendorf about the effects of the stimulus bill:
Toomey asks if it’s impossible to prove that the stimulus created economic growth or jobs. Elmendorf replies, simply, “yes.”
Of course, that isn’t news to most of us. And it’s not the first time that Elmendorf has cautioned that the effects of the stimulus, ultimately, can’t be known for sure. But it’s always worth remembering, each time Obama or the Democrats claim that the stimulus created or saved millions of jobs and saved us from another Great Depression.
