How Are You Defending Life?
by

This morning, in preparation for the 2014 March for Life in Washington, D.C., I distributed signs to high school marchers. The placards were bright green with black text saying, “Defend Life.”

How do we pro-lifers truly do that? How do we not only protect young babies, but also the elderly and the sick? The March for Life is on the anniversary of the announcement of the Roe v. Wade decision. Its purpose is to remind all people that 55 million young ones have died because of this vile and heinous surgical procedure.

The March calls attention to this tragedy; it does not call for any specific policy other than the overturning of Roe, which would allow states to regulate abortion.

While legislation is essential, as conservatives we must confront the culture as well. It is never enough to simply prohibit, as we already know through drug and gun policies in this nation.

If we are true believers in life, we must ask ourselves what we do on a daily basis for the victims of poverty and abortion.

Simcha Fisher of the National Catholic Register writes today about 10 different ways to raise children to be pro-life. They are key for every pro-life person.

My favorite is this:

3.  Give them the whole pro-life picture, from conception to natural death.  Pro-life work includes saving women and babies from abortion, but it also means visiting nursing homes, treating weirdos with respect, feeding the hungry, helping a new mom with babysitting, and anything else that brings hope and comfort to other people.

Being pro-life isn’t simply a political position; it’s an attitude and a way of life. It means respecting every child and checking our “hatreds” at the door. A great way to understand the plight of many abortion victims is to volunteer at a local crisis pregnancy center. Despite their great work, these centers face libel and criticism from the moneyed Planned Parenthood.

However, the counselors at such places really try to help women by explaining all the options: abortion, adoption, and parenthood. These are what the best ones do, despite the irresponsible behavior of a few. The Capitol Hill Pregnancy Center in Washington is such a place.

On this day, we should remember that defending life means a daily habit of compassion. Even the smallest acts can affect a life.
