Ryan Endorses Trump in The Janesville Gazette
by

Let me begin by stating that I am disappointed, but not surprised that House Speaker Paul Ryan has formally endorsed Donald Trump’s candidacy for the White House.

Realistically, Ryan probably had no choice. Had he not done so, the House GOP would have very likely revolted and possibly ousted Ryan from a job he’s had for scarcely 9 months. I’m sure there are days (and probably a lot of them recently) where Ryan wants to say, “Ah, the hell with it!!!,” regrow his beard and move to Switzerland. But Ryan still wants to influence the direction of the Republican Party and he probably thinks he is in a better position to do so by endorsing Trump than not. At the same time, it is clear that Ryan wanted to make his endorsement as discreet as possible.

Think about it. How did Ryan make his endorsement of Trump known? By writing an op-ed in the online edition of The Janesville Gazette, his hometown paper. Nothing against The Janesville Gazette. I’m sure it’s probably a better paper than most of what the mainstream media has to offer. But that Ryan endorsed Trump under the banner of a small town newspaper tells me he would have endorsed Trump in a flyer for the Piggly Wiggly somewhere in behind the 50 cent coupon for toilet paper if he thought he could get away with it.

I think it’s rather telling that Ryan didn’t endorse Trump on camera at a press conference with The Donald at his side. If that had come to pass, Ryan would have delivered the endorsement with all the enthusiasm of a death row inmate who was asked if he had any last words.

In which case, those words might very well have been, “God help us.”
