Supporters of Hamas were seen chanting “Free Palestine” and “Death to America” through the streets of New York City on Independence Day. Protestors crowded 28th St and 11th Avenue to disrupt the fireworks show viewing party.

“Death to America” is a trending topic on X, with videos capturing supporters burning American flags and parading Palestinian and Hamas flags as a sign of protest. Protests were also seen outside Washington Square Park and the City Hall in Philadephia, where pro-Palestinian protestors were lighting American flags on fire. One protest group, Within Our Lifetime Palestine, tweeted that the demonstration was to “disrupt the 4th of July … making clear that these are our streets.”

“You know what I think about the USA? It should burn! Death to America!” One protestor stated in a video. These protestors, who also openly supported Hamas, chanted genocidal slogans towards Jews and tried to take away American flags from the counter-protestors.

Many X users disapproved of the anti-American demonstrations. One user, @Keltic_Witch, tweeted, “If you’re an American, in America, shouting ‘Death to America’ — you need to internalize that America isn’t the place for you and move someplace else.”
The “Death to America” chant is an anti-American slogan used by countries like North Korea and Iran. The slogan was used by communists and made popular by Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, during the 1979 Islamic revolution.
The U.S. and Israeli officials have made “breakthroughs” in reaching an agreement with Hamas for a ceasefire.
