A Challenge to Liberal Symone Sanders: Fund The King Center and Ben Carson Scholarships

The other day, my CNN colleague Symone Sanders and I were charged to discuss an interview in the Wall Street Journal with President Trump. The headline and sub-headline in the WSJ was this:

Trump Threatens to Withhold Payments to Insurers to Press Democrats on Health Bill
‘Democrats will start calling me’ if turmoil hits insurance markets, President Donald Trump tells The Wall Street Journal

Understanding exactly the President’s point — create crisis to get negotiation — I cited on CNN air the late Dr. Martin Luther King. Dr. King had made vividly clear in his famous Letter from the Birmingham Jail that his protests in 1963 Birmingham, Alabama were specifically designed to create “crisis” — and such an extenuating crisis that the other side would be compelled to negotiate.

Which, of course, is exactly what President Trump was threatening to do over health care.

Cue the vapors. In this case with my CNN colleague and ex-Bernie Sanders aide Symone Sanders. Symone was so startled by my garden-variety comparison of President Trump and Dr. King using the same strategy of confrontation to create crisis that leads to negotiation that she reflexively responded by starting with “Ohhhhh Jeffrey!” Followed by a progressive version of a take down – and a T-Shirt inspired by, um, me. As seen here:

So. I will be ordering. And I hope you do too.

With this caveat.

In the spirit of social justice I would request that you split the profits 50-50 between Dr. King and another prominent American: Dr. Ben Carson. Dr. Carson, like Dr. King a superbly accomplished American of African descent, is, as you know, currently serving in President Trump’s Cabinet as Secretary of Housing Development. He would doubtless be thrilled to have you and your progressive supporters contributing to his scholarship fund.

Here are the addresses:

The King Center
449 Auburn Avenue, NE
Atlanta, GA 30312
Main line: 404-526-8900

The Carson Scholars Fund
305 W. Chesapeake Avenue
Suite 310
Towson, MD 21204
Phone: (410) 828-1005

Thank you so much, Symone, for your willingness to contribute to both Dr. King and Dr. Carson using my name. I am proud and all too happy to do it.

We shall overcome!
