Union-Free Twinkies

Last year, union employees at Hostess, primarily Teamsters and bakery union members, refused to take pay cuts even knowing their refusal risked the entire firm’s existence. Perhaps they thought they would win the game of chicken even though management had given no reason for them to think that the cuts were anything other than an absolute financial necessity.

Union members refused to concede and Hostess was burned, filing for bankruptcy protection in January of this year.

According to a report at Yahoo! News, the firms which bought the assets of the firm (probably more about the recipes than plant and equipment, though I don’t know for sure), will soon be repoening four bakeries across the country, with plans for a fifth.

The good news, certainly for the new owners, and probably for future customers’ ability to get Hostess products at more affordable prices, is that the current plan seems likely to exclude unions from the new company’s work force.

Just the latest, and perhaps the tastiest, example of labor unions getting their just desserts.
