A Lot of Ruin in a Nation

by

In about 1777, a young British nobleman named Mr. Sinclair came to Adam Smith with the news of General Burgoyne’s surrender to the patriots of Saratoga or a fort near there.

“This will be the ruin of the nation,” said Mr. Sinclair.

“Young man,” said the Dean, Adam Smith, “there is a great deal of ruin in a nation.”

This comes to my mind lately as the election looms. I assume that Mrs. William Clinton, aka, Hillary Clinton, will win. I am not a big fan. She has a poor record of incompetence, cruelty, bullying, lying, stealing, and crime. The election was rigged, as Mr. Trump said, by the media, the one-party media which lined up solidly behind Hillary Clinton. I fear for our nation being led by an actual criminal.

But I want to echo what Smith said. This is a huge, powerful, great nation. We will get by. If we each do our parts as parents, spouses, friends, workers, soldiers, law enforcement, teachers, firefighters, lawyers, judges, loving children, we will get by. We have faced far worse challenges. We will get through this one as well.

We all have to stand up for what we believe is right day after day, even if it’s unpopular. For me, this is right to Life. I know it’s cost me my career in Hollywood, but I will be buried as a Right to Life man. We all have to stand up for what we think is right and holy and we will get by.

We have to keep our minds on what’s vital. For me, it’s my wife, my son, Tommy, world’s handsomest man, my stunningly beautiful daughter in law, Kitty, and my darling granddaughter, Coco. And my sister and her family, and my dogs. And my pals in the armed forces, and I will stand by them forever. And I will stand by the memory of the Peacemaker, Richard Nixon.

We will not let this election be the end of anything. We will keep fighting for the America we want and love. This election eve, when Mrs. Clinton becomes President elect, we all wish her well. We want her to be a great President. But we will fight in the courts, in the media, in our neighborhoods, for what we know is right.

There is a great deal of ruin in a nation and also a great deal of salvation.

The exact same goes if Mr. Trump wins. We will hold him to our standards as well. The fate of the greatest nation there has ever been will be decided by us, not by some millionaires in a big house in DC. Mr. Trump is a totally unprepared candidate, but we will help him.

Still, it is likely that Mrs. Clinton will win. We face a prolonged struggle now. But we will not give up on what we know is right.

What is the watchword for the morning after? God bless America, and please, my fellow Americans, remember JFK’s words: “Here on earth, God’s work must surely be our own.”
