Based on our analysis, here’s where things stand as of 5:55 p.m. Tuesday:
Yes: 52
No: 40
Undecided: 7 (Ayotte, Baucus, Begich, Heitkamp, Landrieu, McCain, Pryor)
Fate unclear: 1 (Lautenberg)
To reiterate, Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.) is leaning toward a yes vote, but the rest could easily go either way. One more nay would presumably doom Manchin-Toomey, which would all but doom the Democrats’ main gun proposal. Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has yet to set a floor schedule.
