The Spectacle Blog

In an earlier post, Patrick Ryan wondered if ICE’s release of hundreds of illegal immigrants, which they blamed on the sequester, constituted political manipulation.

Here’s one we don’t have to wonder about. On Sunday, Education Secretary Arne Duncan claimed on CBS’ Face the Nation, “There are literally teachers now who are getting pink slips, who are getting notices that they can’t come back this fall.” Why? More sequester wreckage, of course.

As the Washington Post reports today, it was flat-out not true:

Officials in Kanawha County, West Virginia say that the “transfer notices” sent to at least 104 educators had more to do with a separate matter that involves a change in the way West Virginia allocates federal dollars designated for poor children.

The transfer notices are required by state law and give teachers a warning that they may be moved to a different position next school year. They don’t necessarily mean a teacher has been laid off, said Pam Padon, director of federal programs and Title 1 for the Kanawha County public schools. “It’s not like we’re cutting people’s jobs at this point.”

She said those 104 notices will ultimately result in the elimination of about five to six teaching jobs, which were likely to be cut regardless of the sequester.

I noted earlier this week how the administration is overblowing sequester cuts to public schools. Looks like they plan to keep the hysteria train running right up until March 1.

Overheard Today, 2-27-13
Senate Staff seat adjacent to open door meeting between a high ranking member of the President’s White House Staff and my Senator.
“It’s looking pretty bad. The Republicans look like they’ll let the cuts happen. What’s the President thinking?”
“Let it happen. We’ll squeeze them a little more, then cave.
“Cave?”
“Look, Harold, only an idiot or a Republican couldn’t see what’s happening. Our financials are in the crapper. Entitlements have to be reformed. If we don’t get things fixed, we’ll all be in the toilet together.”
“I understand that! But some of my members are facing tough races.”
“We think the party will thrive. Let the Republicans hold the economy hostage while forcing us to cave on entitlements. We’ll get the fix we need while being able to blame the Republicans for all the pain. Get it?”
“I see. And we can even hold ourselves high for not allowing the nasty old Republicans to force even more Castor Oil down our collective throats. But what if our voters find out?”
“Harold, two things: 1) they’re not watching, and 2) who would tell them?”
“It’s perfect!”
“Why do you think He’s the Boss?”

If any teachers get laid off because the the sequester, then they shouldn't have been hired in the first place. The federal government has no constitutional authority to pay for teachers--it is a local responsibility.

What is this tragic sequestration? Let me explain it in simple terms.
Let us consider a family where the working father earns $3,000/month; his wife takes care of the houehold and their 3 children. The wife makes the budget for the next month amounting to $4,000. The husband protests - we do not have that kind of money! The wife compromises after a vigorous debate - OK, she says, we will reduce our expenditures to only $3,980 next month.
