Sunday's speech by Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), comparing opponents of the health-care bill to Nazis, drew a response from Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.):

"For the most part, I certainly recall the long conversations that the ranking Republican, Sen. Grassley, and the chairman of the committee had. I know they worked in good faith and it would be best if we did that. It's to that end that I want to speak to some comments that a colleague earlier made today, and I don't know whether it's frustration or maybe just the lens through which partisans view things and their opponents, unfortunately, that spawned the remarks earlier today from one of our Democratic colleagues. But in either event, his characterization of his Republican colleagues, I think, requires response. . . .
"Now, I wouldn't believe my ears, these references to one of the first and most vicious attacks on the Jews by Nazis, hanging of blacks. The majority leader's remarks last week comparing the Republicans' position on health care to the pro-slavery movement were largely ignored as the clumsy offhand ramblings of a partisan, but the references earlier today appeared to be not off-the-cuff mistakes but prepared text, deliberately delivered by one of the brightest minds of the Senate. . . .
"There are honorable people on both sides of the aisle who obviously have to agree to disagree. But our colleague attributes no good motive to Republicans whose ‘passions' are simply ‘malignant' and ‘vindictive.' . . . I wonder if my colleagues really believe that our position is animated by hatred. Why else would we oppose this legislation? . . .
"Does my colleague really believe that this is why I oppose the legislation, or my colleague, John McCain? . . . I don't like this bill. That's why I oppose it. . . .
"But finally, my colleague turned the world upside-down by arguing about the only reason that we're here the week before Christmas is because of Republican bad behavior, that we ruined the holidays . . . because we followed the procedures of the Senate that require the reading of the bill. . . The reason it's read is so our staff would in fact have time to read it, to advise us -- we didn't all have time to read it ourselves -- and to advise the public, our constituents, of what's in it. Again, we received it yesterday, we're voting on it tonight. That's very little time to know everything that's in there, and the more we learn about what's in there, the angrier a lot of people get. . . .
"This is why we oppose the bill. It's why we don't like the process. We respect what our constituents are telling us. We believe this bill will be bad for them and it will be bad for our country. Our Democratic colleagues have a different position. Neither their position nor ours is malignant, nor should they be expressed vindictively."

Wow - what a weak ass response. No wonder Republicans always get their asses handed to them - they don't fight. They nag, like a spinster auntie.

Jim Hlavac| 12.20.09 @ 9:50PM

Exactly right Mr. Cartman -- how weak -- really girlie boy stuff.
To be called a nazi and a lyncher, and then just deliver mush as a response -- pitiful.
The Republican juggler vein is ripped, and then they ask that the follow up stab in the back be a little lower, as if they had an itch.
One more reason to vote every bum out -- every one - for the whole rotted mess is irredeemable.
Whatever happened to "finally, sir, at long last, have you no shame?" Really.

Eric Cartman| 12.21.09 @ 9:45AM

They (Republicans) are pitiful, no? I like your blog, Mr. Hlavac.

Yosemeti Sam| 12.20.09 @ 10:51PM

Apparently, a 'weak' response.

But then again perhaps a tactical avoidance of
an in kind response - to maintain a contrast in
political behavioral traits; to demonstrate that what typically flows from too many democrats is diarrhea of the mouth.

Senator McGoo - are you seeing more clearly?

Paul| 12.20.09 @ 10:55PM

This is his response to being associated with Kristalnacht and lynchings? Mike Dukakis redux.

Yosemeti Sam| 12.20.09 @ 11:42PM

Footnote:

Isn't it a delightful to fathom senator Blighthouse frowning upon putative Nazi 'behavior by the
GOP - and yet appreciate the 60th vote
(a fungibility factor) of a Roman senate buff
and erstwhile affectionate palaverer of its'
history; dubbed by El Rushbo as 'sheets' Bryd.

Franklin| 12.21.09 @ 12:11AM

If we had someone to give the kind of speech that Bibi gave at the UN, I would faint. He was strong without being beligerent, forceful without calling names, and fearfully astute in what he said and said it with true conviction.

We need to have a truly larger than life character call them shameful.

It's a word that doesn't get used as often as it should in this day. We are "taught" it isn't PC to shame someone. Probably because it's effective and the shamed person doesn't like it.

X and Y| 12.21.09 @ 12:27AM

It is a very good response. When a madman is frothing and ranting, the best answer is a soft spoken statement of facts. Kyle said, "I don't like this Bill, I wanted it read because we dont' have time to read it otherwise and I respect my constituents.
"Just doing my job and respecting my constituents. "
Nice Job Kyle!
Whitehouse is going to hear from the Kyle's respected constituents. Whitehouse's speech was over the top and then some!

Spicy Joker| 12.21.09 @ 12:48AM

It's clear that it wouldn't even matter if Republicans won back the Senate in 2010. With sissies like Jon Vyle, Lindsay Grahamnesty, George Groinovich, and the rest of the Repubic Lamestream Partnership in control, the Senate would still pass the pubic option, shamnesty, and terrorist rights.

…Jews during Kristallnacht and Southern racists who lynched and hung black Americans.  This is the vilest kind of slander, and it has no place on the floor of the Senate.  McCain also had Senator Kyl’s response.  Here is some of what he said: Now, I wouldn’t believe my ears, these references to one of the first and most vicious attacks on the Jews by Nazis, hanging of blacks. Jeff Lebowski| 12.21.09 @ 1:41AM

Here's what Kyl should have said:

"'Nazis', huh? Ouch, that hurts. You need to fire your speechwriter or webmaster or whoever the hell it is that writes these things. You've been using 'Nazi' since W took office in '01, and now might be a good time to come up with something more creative. Maybe 'Nihilst'...or 'jerkoff'...or something.
I will address the substance of the Nazi charge further, but if you'll permit me a personal aside first....
Observing you guys trying to piece together this house of cards with stun guns and rubber bands is hilarious -- I have to bite my tongue sometimes watching you guys whip the votes for this Health Care bill -- it's like watching a bunch of retards trying to hump a doornob (in the words of Rip Torn).
My favorite part of your screed, however, was that reference to things hanging from trees. Were there any Nazi KKK members? Not sure, but it was probably less nostalgia for WWII and more a harkening to the glory days of the Confederacy when Democrat Senators filibustered against anti-lynching laws back in the 60's. Yes, it's correct -- no need to look it up Shellhouse.
And yup...wasn't the Nazi's that openly defied Brown v Board of Education. Nope. Pretty sure they didn't fillibuster the 1964 Civil Rights Act either. Nope. Pretty sure Democrat Senators did both of those. Uh huh. That's got to be my personal favorite though -- the party of segregation lecturing Republicans about............anything.
We understand its just the anger talking Shellhouse, but seriously...

SoCon| 12.21.09 @ 1:03PM

Jeff, to add to the idiot Senator's hypocrisy--the only one-time KKK Kleagle in the Senate is Robert Byrd, proud democrat of long standing. Disgusting blowhard.

SDN| 12.21.09 @ 7:17AM

"Were there any Nazi KKK members? Not sure, let's ask the only Senator with personal knowledge. Is the Democratic Senator from West Virginia on the floor? Or is Kleagle Byrd restocking at the pre-Christmas White Sale?"

SoCon| 12.21.09 @ 1:05PM

"Centrists"....in the middle of What?

"provocative, fascinating, cordial, respectful discussions' are for cocktail parties & think tanks. The future of our nation is at stake here. It's time to choose, not equivocate. We're on the train to socialist hell and the centrists are interested in slowing down from 120 to what...about 80?

Eric Cartman| 12.21.09 @ 9:50AM

I think that's what George W. tried to be - a centrist. "I'll have Teddy write the Education Bill! Sign the McCain/Finegold Act, Expand Medicaid by $40 billion, let all the illegal aliens in for free and then do lunch. Every one with me?!" And that turned out for us, how?

SoCon| 12.21.09 @ 1:08PM

Ellen, the extremists get results! Thanks, but no thanks; we're tired of having our rear-ends handed to us.

Go talk to our fascist democrat friends; see how far you get there.

Sen. Kyle: "There are honorable people on both sides of the aisle who obviously have to agree to disagree. But our colleague attributes no good motive to Republicans whose ‘passions' are simply ‘malignant' and ‘vindictive.'

This is NEW? As a regular 'consumer' of political theater in America....this is simply standard Democrat operating procedure.

With all respect due Sen. Kyle, Republicans are way to passive in opposition to the lunatic Left. This ongoing Republican mindset of 'civility' does mainstream America no favors. The survival of the home we know depends on unapologetic unqualified opposition to those who are determined to wreck it.

"Moderation in temper is always a virtue, but moderation in principal is always a vice." Thomas Paine.

I definitely believe the second part! Sometimes, however, you just have got to get mad because mealy-mouthness is not a virtue.

Deborah D| 12.21.09 @ 10:53AM

ooops...should have been "principle" not the other.

Frankie| 12.21.09 @ 10:18AM

Republicans are pathetic because they just can't resist the allure of political power. They're really no different than kids when the adults aren't around. They abuse power, just not as badly as those other guys, and deep down know they ought not to. But those other guys are so much worse!

The Democrats of course have no such compunction.

This is why we used to have a constitution. Quite a concept in its day.

COnservative Bob| 12.21.09 @ 10:46AM

In the days of our founding Mr. Whitehouse would have been invited to defend his remarks on the field of honor.
It is a pity that along with shame the concept of honor is also no long present in that august chamber.
When they take our liberty, property and now life by acts of pure deceit must we in our defense of same, show the contrast between us by similar restraint?

Oldefarte| 12.21.09 @ 11:41AM

Everything for liberal Democrats always comes down to RACISM, DISENFRANCHILEMENT, DISCRIMINATION, GENTRIFICATION or some other ONE WORD slavery conotation/discription [since a logical, rationaly argument based upon facts is impossible]. These people are simply domestic-terrorists MORONS!!!

SoCon| 12.21.09 @ 1:11PM

Democrats can't win on substance because they don't have any; they have to lie and cheat--it's the only way they can prevail. Case in point: ObamaSCare.

oh boy. this whitehouse dude id gettin good. gotta save some of this stuff from him. gonna be a nice epitaph for the dems. ya know how when you see some blurb on the vietnam war and era, they always play the doors 'the end' or ccr's 'fortunate son' as the theme music, and always show that awful picture of the poor little VN girl who had been naplamed, or the hillicpters leaving the roof, or being dumped off the side of an aircraft carrier....playing THIS guy will be like that. "yes, back in '09 when the dems finally imploded and started the bankrupting of america, right before they were destroyed as a major plitical party, this is what they sounded like, and this is what helped bring about their demise......" this is the end.....

Jim Tower| 12.21.09 @ 8:44PM

I'm so incredibly tired of mushmouthed Republican responses to this kind of claptrap.

These Dems deserve a caning on the floor when they make insults like that - not this kind of weak-knee'd lily-livered mush.

Abdul Karemma Wheat| 12.21.09 @ 9:10PM

Huh?

Publius| 12.22.09 @ 3:52AM

If Whitehouse is one of the brightest minds in the Senate then that doesn't speak highly of the Senate now does it. Nothing more than a bunch of worthless political whores. The most pathetic thing of all that todays anger will be gone by the weak minded American public by election time and these idiots will get re-elected, what then? Don't believe me look no further than one Murtha, John.
