Prediction: How the Media Will Report Sarah Palin's Book Tour

The Detroit Free Press reports that hundreds camped out overnight to see Sarah Palin in Grand Rapids, Mich., and by 7 a.m., an estimatef 1,500 were already waiting in line -- for a 6 p.m. event.

Remember, the media elite view Palin's popularity as an existential threat. So how are they to cover the massive crowds that turn out for Palin's book tour?

First, expect the major national outlets (NBC, New York Times, etc.) to ignore this evidence of Palin's overwhelming popularity. They've been commissioning polls especially designed to show that Palin is unpopular, and they're not going to let facts get in their way.

Second, to the extent that the elite media take notice of the huge crowds at Palin events, expect them to focus obsessively over any tinfoil-hat crackpots who turn up. Time or Newsweek will send reporters out to these book-signings, and the reporters will interview scores of Palin fans until they find one or two conspiracy kooks who think Obama was born in Kenya or that 9/11 was an "inside job." And those will be the only Palin supporters quoted in the MSM stories.

Finally, expect the media to take the good-news-is-bad-news angle: If Palin is "bad news" for the GOP -- hey, Newsweek told you so! -- then the fact that she's drawing big crowds can only mean that the Republican Party is headed for oblivion, you see.

She's still driving 'em crazy -- or, in the case of Andrew Sullivan, crazier. Today the Palin-obsessed Sullivan tells readers he's "gone silent" because he and his team of "rigorous and careful" analysts are busy poring over Going Rogue. In a single 440-word post, Sullivan manages to call Palin a "delusional fantasist," a "deeply disturbed person" with an "unhinged grip on reality" who is peddling "lies," "fabrications and delusions" in a book that is a "work of fiction." Oh, and also, "We want to be fair to her, and to her family."

Thank goodness for that! We look forward to Andrew Sullivan's next book, Inside Sarah Palin's Uterus: The Most Shocking Scandal Ever. Bet they'll be standing in line for that one . . .

Who cares what the LameStream Media think? Keep the lies and insults coming, liberal morons; we'll see how smug you are after we've wiped the floor with you in 2010 and 2012.

Palin 2012

Brian72| 11.18.09 @ 3:16PM

Oh yes. RawMusclGlutes really striving hard to be fair to Mrs. Palin, and her family. Of course, we would expect no less from a deranged freakish pervert heterophobe.

I am so sick to death of people allowing this sick weirdo to call himself a conservative.
Besides all of his aforementioned personal attributes, the idiot voted for Obama and continues to defend him to this day.
Conservative he ain't.

Brian72| 11.18.09 @ 3:20PM

Check that, he's not a citizen so he did not vote for Obama. He wishes he could have, so that counts the same as a "conservative" like David "crease of his pants" Brooks, the NYT right wing conscience.

I'm curious, if the national media outlet polls are finding that Palin is unpopular, can you point me to some polls that show she is popular? I like facts.

Smitty| 11.18.09 @ 4:40PM

The only polls that matter are the two election days in 2010 and 2012, Jess. Let's see if you like those facts after we kick your sorry butts. Write back and let us know.

Jim Treacher| 11.18.09 @ 6:07PM

Well, you could always check the bestseller lists and attendance at book signings. If they meet your rigorous standards of evidence, that is.

JohnD| 11.18.09 @ 8:48PM

Jessica:

Fair question, and I have no problem with you being skeptical. I also don't have a problem if you might disagree with a lot of us here.

Rasmussen did a poll last week (Nov 13-14, 2009) that showed 51% of all surveyed (democrats, republicans, left-handed Lithuanian Lesbians, et.al.) had a favorable opinion of Palin, against 43% unfavorable.

It broke out like this:

Very favorable 21%
Somewhat favorable 30%
Somehwat unfavorable 14%
Very unfavorable 29%
Not sure 5%

There is the raw data you seek. You are free to interpret it however you want.

I am like you; most people read the executive summary, but I flip past that and look at the numbers. Data doesn't lie.

JohnD| 11.18.09 @ 8:48PM

Oh, and Jessica, here is the link:

Jessica| 11.18.09 @ 4:14PM

Also, could you share with me any data (polling data is fine) that shows the low percentage of Palin supporters who believe Obama was born in Kenya? Or that the US gov't was responsible for 9/11? Thanks!

Smitty| 11.18.09 @ 4:35PM

There are fewer 'Birthers' than crazy 'Truthers' like you, Jessica. Moron.

Jim Treacher| 11.18.09 @ 6:08PM

Are there any other negatives you'd like us to prove, Jessica? I look forward to hearing from you when you're done beating your girlfriend.

Lisa| 11.18.09 @ 7:10PM

Ew, Jessica probably has a crew cut.

Bobbi| 11.18.09 @ 4:27PM

I'm sure you are "just curious," Jessica. Thanks!

Jessica| 11.18.09 @ 4:42PM

I don't understand your response. What would I be using the data supporting Palin for - some nefarious plot? If these polls by NYTimes etc are flawed or wrong, I'd like to see some credible polls that show she is overwhelmingly popular. But they should be the same types of samples, i.e. all Republicans, all Democrats, or all Americans.

Jim Treacher| 11.18.09 @ 6:11PM

She's not popular at all. Her book's not selling. Her interview didn't give Oprah her highest ratings in 2 years. People aren't lining up for hours to attend her book signings. She's deeply unpopular and you have nothing to worry about.

There, now isn't that better?

Jessica's Sister| 11.18.09 @ 5:21PM

Jessica...59% of potential voters think Palin reflects their views--Rassmussen, I believe. That's a higher percentage of people than voted for Obam. So, yeah, she's pretty much very popular.

Jessica| 11.18.09 @ 5:33PM

Yeah, but that's GOP voters. I believe the "major" news outlets find similar results in their polls. I'm not saying she's not extremely popular, but I don't see how those polls are incorrect when they find a majority of all Americans don't agree with her/won't vote for her/whatever. If we're talking about facts, where are the facts wrong?

alwaysfiredup| 11.18.09 @ 5:52PM

Jessica, the problem is your "facts" aren't facts. They just look like facts to you. Polling data isn't factual, particularly if taken from polls that are designed to return a predetermined conclusion. Rasmussen, on the other hand, which produced the most accurate polling data in 2008 and 2009, has her overall favorability at 51%. Not fabulous, but not terrible. Let's see what happens after the book tour.

Eric F.| 11.18.09 @ 5:57PM

Obama's popularity is not particulalrly high now. However, when he finishes renegotiating NAFTA (a work in progress!) and inaugurates the new high speed rail service from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, I think it'll shoot right back up to where it was in January. People like results, and he'll be giving us just that very soon. You'll see. And then you'll have to apologize to Jessica.

Denise| 11.18.09 @ 7:07PM

Yeah, those Obama approvals will skyrocket for sure--alongside his skyrocketing unemployment numbers. It's called Obama's "JOBLESS" recovery.

Yeah, sure.

jessica| 11.18.09 @ 6:09PM

I agree with you, alwaysfiredup, about polls. But McCain says above that the news outlets ignore the facts that Palin is overwhelmingly popular. What other quantitative facts can be provided to me to dispute the quantitative polls (flawed as they may be) that say she is not?

PALIN FOR PRESIDENT| 11.18.09 @ 7:02PM

Jessica, HuffPo is calling you, they're missing one of their (many) idiots.

Don't let the door hit 'ya where the Good Lord split 'ya. Bye.

Do not fear the enemy, for your enemy can only take your life. It is far better that you fear the media, for they will steal your HONOR. That awful power, the public opinion of a nation, is created in America by a horde of ignorant, self-complacent simpletons who failed at ditching and shoemaking and fetched up in journalism on their way to the poorhouse. ---Mark Twain.

R. Dittmar| 11.19.09 @ 9:47AM

In defense of Andrew Sullivan (yes - you read that right!), he’s on so many medications for his health problems I think that he is literally no longer in his right mind. I guess that if he insists on continuing to make an @$$ of himself we must grudgingly pay him attention, but I really feel more pity for him at this point than anything else.

On the other hand until we have documented evidence that they’re on psychotropic drugs, there is no excuse at all for David Frum, David Brooks, Kathleen Parker or Peggy Noonan. Them I’m happy to heartily ridicule.

I'm pretty liberal. I also agree that most of the media has a liberal bias (except for FOX and friends). I'm sure that the media will attack Palin's book and Palin, because a) they're liberal; b) the coverage will get them readers/viewers/page hits from both sides; c) I'm guessing, without having read it, granted, that it's a pretty easy target. The most fun and scathing review I've read of it is on Media Matters.

The most interesting article on the book tour itself (which has smart strategy behind it, I think) is here.

And the only article I've read so far from a conservative who is actually a Palin supporter--at the least, he defended her decision to resign) is from John Tantillo, who argues on his marketing blog that Palin is essentially shooting herself in the foot by writing a book that focuses on the PAST.) He maintains that Palin, like Obama, had "forward motion" (a branding term he coined) going for her--they both seemed fresh, new. In turning her attention to the dissection of the campaign rather than looking forward to something, anything, I think she has hurt her 'brand' and lost out on an opportunity to expand her base.

Obama's Miranda Madness

Less than an hour into the interrogation of the Christmas Day "underwear bomber," the U.S. Justice Department instructed FBI agents to advise Abdulmutallab — an al Qaeda operative from Nigeria — of his Miranda rights. Shockingly, interviews since have yielded "no actionable intelligence."

Stop plea bargaining with terrorists!
