AARP, which has given its full-throated support to Democratic
health care legislation even though seniors remain largely
opposed, received an $18 million grant in the economic stimulus
package for a job training program that has not created any jobs,
according to the Obama administration's Recovery.gov website.
The Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP),
according to the website, is "a work training program for
unemployed mature workers who are 55+ and are at or below 125% of
the poverty guidelines." So far, $6.5 million has been spent on
the program, and it has not reported creating any jobs.
In February, the Politicoreported
that AARP was putting pressure on Republican members of Congress
to support the stimulus package.
Since then, AARP has moved on to lobbying for passage of health
care legislation, even though Democratic proposals have called
for several hundred billion dollars in cuts to Medicare, a
program that the group typically defends tooth and nail when
Republicans propose cutting it. A recent Pew survey
found that just 31 percent of those over 65 supported health care
legislation being touted by AARP.
As it turns out, AARP is also in a position to
benefit financially if the health care legislation passes,
because seniors losing benefits as a result of cuts to Medicare
Advantage will be forced to buy Medigap policies, which is the
main source of AARP revenue.
Barry Rand, the chief executive of AARP, was a big
donor to the Obama campaign and has retained a cozy
relationship with the administration.
The stimulus grant to AARP was
reported by WatchDog.org, a site run by the Franklin Center
for Government and Public Integrity, which also found that
stimulus funds were funneled into another liberal interest group,
the National Council of La Raza.
UPDATE: AARP has not yet returned a call seeking comment.
UPDATE 2: AARP responds that the purpose of the program is not to
create jobs, but to offer job training and find work for
participants, an effort the group claims has been successful.
Here's the full response, from Drew Nannis, AARP's senior vice
president:
“The Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) is a
job training program that places older workers living at or
below the poverty line at community non-profit organizations.
The AARP Foundation is one of 18 national organizations that
administer SCSEP for the US Department of Labor.
“In 2009, the US Department of Labor allotted all 18 national
sponsors of the SCSEP program, as well as the state-level SCSEP
programs, additional funds under the American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act to help older Americans reenter the workforce.
These funds were allotted in direct proportion to the amount
each organization receives annually for the program. AARP
Foundation received $18 million.
“We understand there is some confusion stemming from the
reporting outputs listed on Recovery.gov. Simply put, the
federal stimulus program reporting documents ask organizations
to report the number of jobs created at the organization
receiving the funds. AARP’s role in administering the SCSEP
program is not to create jobs at AARP. Instead, we stipend
SCSEP participants who train at and provide additional services
at no cost to community non-profit organizations. Participants
receive on-the-job training and local non-profits increase
their capacity to help the communities they serve.
“In just the first four months of additional funding, 2,601
people are being trained while working at local non-profit
organizations. This translates into:
-- $315,000 in
weekly training stipends for SCSEP participants
-- 46,000
hours of no-cost service provided to our host agencies each
week (valued at about $980,000)
“Additionally, to date we have placed 500 retrained older
workers into permanent jobs in 75 communities across the
nation.
“The AARP Foundation is incredibly proud of SCSEP. Over a 40
year history, SCSEP has helped more than 500,000 lower-income
older Americans find jobs and provided more than $190 million a
year in no-cost services to 5,000 non-profit organizations
across the country.”

Keith| 11.18.09 @ 1:58PM
I cancelled my membership when AARP started being a proponent for
this administration and not for Retired Persons. Considering that
AARP's membership efforts start with 50+ folks, it means that a
substantial part of its membership is still employed in the
workforce and see the pinprick of light as not being the end of
the tunnel but the headlight of an oncoming diesel of the train
of disaster that's going to run us all over.
If AARP takes benefits from the Govt (TARP) and its leadership
are donating to a particular party then AARP is no longer working
for its membership, is it?
tim johnston| 11.18.09 @ 10:15PM
It ain't a diesel, it is a pair of UP Challengers at full
throttle with the Johnson bar all the way forward with a mile
plus long train of laden cars fixin to smash our country to
pieces. The engineer has tied down the saftey valve and the
fireman is hell bent on blowing the coal load straight out the

What do you find so amusing in the train analogy, and how is it a
" backwoods" comment? And even if it were, is it in your mind
that backwoods people are not to be allowed to express an
opinion? I would not have chosen to comment here if it didn't
appear that you believe only the erudite people should be allowed
to contribute to the discussion.

A jobs program that hasn't created any jobs? How are the
executives at AARP compensated. Do they suddenly have large
'bonuses'? Or other perks? Smells like a bribe to me, especially
since it deprives their memberships of benefits that then have to

unethical to lobby for the removal of advantage in order to sell

I just have to know:
What is it with this intolerance to providing health care to your
citizens? After all the US is more than willing to spend trillion
on, let's face it, at pretty stupid war. Why not spend that money
to help your own citizens?
Don't you think it'll cost less if you maintain respectable level
of yearly exams rather than to go in only when you have a problem
that could have been prevented? That's not rocket science people.
Having universal healthcare does not make you socialist or
communist or fascist or some pseudo-non-american country. It
improves the general well fair and happiness of american
citizens. What's wrong with that?
Jar Head| 11.20.09 @ 3:09PM
youpplrnutz...your comments about the current U.S. Healthcare
system are so far off-base. We citizens of the good old, war
mongering (save the assess of most of the planet) USA have the
absolute best health care on the planet...we don't need need a
new system, especially anything like the socialist (yes, whether
you can see it or not, all others are a form of socialism) cabals
you so like.
What you fail to realize is that the "healthcare" debate in the
U.S. is not about healthcare...it's about POWER! Power of the
socialists (yes, that again...Pelosi, Reid, Obama...actually
Marxists) to take over the US economy...control the economy/money
and you control the country. So no lectures from afar on U.S.
Healthcare, because you simply don't get it....I remind you, it's
all about socialist/Marxist political power...they can't get it
any other way...never through the ballot box.
God bless Texas...hope to make it across that border before the
secession is underway.

And, since you saw fit to chastise Jess with your not elitist
comments about his spelling/vocabulary...let this not be elitist
either....but you need to educate yourself on the term "well
fair"....the correct context would have been "welfare"
Jeff| 11.21.09 @ 1:16PM
One good reason is that when the national debt is $12.5 trillion
and rising we cannot afford to add $1-2 trillion/year to it when
it does nothing to reduce or control the cost of health care.
GEDoug| 11.22.09 @ 9:57AM
Check your premise. I think you miss the point. The legislation
currently being proposed is not about providing health to all;
it's about changing the relationship between government and it's
citizens. The progressive agenda is to grow government,
nationalization, and control. Which is what these bills, if
passed, will do. There are many obvious ways to address the
issues of controlling health care cost and providing insurance to
all that does not include the complete over haul and government
control of our health care system.
happyexcdn| 11.23.09 @ 12:10AM
Dear youpplrnutz
As a VERY HAPPY CANADIAN EXPAT living in the greatest country on
earth (USA) let me remind you of a couple of Canadian
realities:
1. Canada enjoys an opportunity to forgo a real defense
commitment both in substance and cost because the US, naturally,
protects its northern border and polar access. The Canada that
fought so bravely in WWI and II was destroyed by that nightmare
known as Pierre Elliot Trudeau. The Canadian troops fighting so
bravely in Afghanistan deserve not only support but a country
worthy of their sacrifice.
2. There are MANY Canadians, including politicians like Belinda
Stronach, who are both smart enough to know and, in some cases,
wealthy enough to get to the US for the type of healthcare Canada
only dreams of. Tommy Douglas had a big heart but never
understood that the social network of small town Saskatchewan
that inspired his vision would never and could never translate
into nationalized/socialized medicine. Liberals seem to forget
that theory and reality are not synonymous. SOCIALIZED MEDICINE
IS A FAILURE.
3. The U.S. actually spends more per capita on healthcare than
Canada. The fact that the spending is privately funded rather
than publicly stolen through over taxation and dysfunctional
bureaucracy does not belie the reality that healthcare you buy
through a company, even where abuse exists, is never as far off
the mark as the waste and dysfunction of a bureaucrat.
4. Canada was a wonderful nation prior to the nightmare of 1968.
The Canadian people then, like Americans now, allowed themselves
to be seduced by that socialist, narcissistic, francophile Pierre
Elliot Trudeau. He sold the great country of Canada for a mess of
political pottage. The Canadian people have spent the decades
since trying to escape the liberal/socialist/ franco centric
nightmare and restore the traditional conservative values that
are still bedrock in places like Alberta - the promised land of
Canada.
5. Lay off the American stereotypes, especially as you preach
against their application to you. These are God fearing, country
loving, charity paying champions who have always paid for the
world's sins and the world's arrogance with their blood and
treasure and the lives of their children. They are the final
bastion of decency in a world gone wrong. God Bless the United
States of America.

youpplrnutz| 11.20.09 @ 1:41PM
I'm not trying to be elitist but it's "PASSED" not "PAST."
You've provided nothing but rhetoric. If I wanted that I'd watch
Limbaugh, Hannity or Coulter.
You haven't answered my question. What's wrong with every
american citizen having health care? I'm not talking about
illegals or tourists. I'm talking about hardworking americans
that have paid into the system. Why can't they get the health
care they need without going bankrupt?
It's an honest question devoid of partisan bullshit. I just don't
understand why there is a portion of the US population that's so
vehemently against providing it's own citizens with proper
medical care.
Jar Head| 11.20.09 @ 3:18PM
If you really knew your stuff, you'd realize...no one goes
without health care in the USA....just ask any emergency room
director...we take all comers...including illegals!!
Most often, users of the emergency room method don't have the
insurance they could for any number of reasons, often simply
because they DON'T want the insurance and are not willing to pay
premiums. That they make that choice freely and now your ilk
feels that I should pay their premiums, by definition, is
Socialism. I for one refuse to live under such a putrid political
structure without a fight!
youpplrnutz| 11.20.09 @ 4:20PM
Thank you for your answer Jar Head.
You're right I don't know much about american style health care
other than don't get sick in your country or risk losing
everything. That's why I'm asking. From my perspective, health
care is a privilege of being a citizen of my country and one that
I'm more than willing to pay for. $100 a month is paltry when
compared to my health and that of my family.
I'm from Canada and despite what your news tells you, most of the
people I know are happy with health care here. Coming from me
that means a lot as many members of my family are extremely
reliant on our health care for a number of reasons (I won't bore
you with details). We pay into the system and are provided with
everything we need. We still pay for medication but from what
I've seen it's much cheaper than in the US.
So what you're upset about is the "choice" to have or not to
have. I'm assuming as a Marine you have some form of medical
insurance. Do you pay for it out of your salary? What would you
do without it?
And FYI when you say things like "... my ilk ... " you position
yourself as "the crazy guy not worth listening to." This is why
conservatism is failing, the automatic segregation of "you" vs
everyone else who don't share your opinion. I'm not trying to
fight with you. I'm trying to have an open, adult conversation.
Let's leave the insults to the elementary kids.
texas transplant| 11.20.09 @ 5:11PM
I think what 'jar head' is trying to express is the sentiment
that most people of the United States have grown up in an era of
limited government interference. We have worked hard to provide
things like health insurance for our families. When the
government interferred and began regulating the insurance
industry years ago, prices skyrocked not only for health care,
but also insurance. No one should go without health care - hence
public hospitals and clinics, medicare and medicaid.
A true independent study needs to be done on the reason for the
increase in the actual costs of health care. Why does a doctor
charge a person with no insurance $85 a visit, but with insurance
$45 a visit? Our recent government has a history of doing what's
best for the interests of a few and not for the masses (ie -
unions, lobbyists).
oldpap| 11.21.09 @ 8:56PM
To mention an earlier reply , the reform being sought now is a
power grab , not really healthcare reform for the good of the
people. Also , we are not against the hard working , paying into
the system people having insurance but, our Constitution says
when it is presented in this context it must be available to all
, including illegals in this country. Our government , the
Democrats , wants to GIVE FREE HEALTHCARE TO THE ILLEGALS so they
will have a larger voter base. I don't know what the ILLEGAL
IMMIGRANT situation is in Canada but , here it is at least 12
million people. The rates with the new REFORMS are supposedly
higher than what most people pay now , plus there will be higher
taxes , fees and fines which raise the cost higher yet. I am sure
they will be higher than 100 dollars a month. I have a reasonable
insurance plan through my employer and the combined amount paid
out for my spouse and I is approximately $1,100.00 per month. I
also read recently that British Columbia is having to raise rates
and Ration the care even more to their citizens. Most of us just
do not want this kind of reform. The U.S. Government also has a
very poor record of success when running any kind of business ,
in fact no success at all.

Life, Liberty, Property...
That's all government can protect without violating each
individuals right to that which is their own. That is the crux of
the issue, in order for any government 'provide services' to any
individual it must first perform what is an illegal act for any
individual. If I steal money from you and then use it to buy
food, prescription drugs, medical care, a home, or a new car, for
those whom have not, the principal will still land me in prison
for theft. Therefore, when a government takes from the whole of
society (and makes us feel better because they took more of the
property from those rich kulaks), is it not still theft? Perhaps,
you prefer legalized plunder.
My money is my property, our republic government was instituted
to protect the rights of every individual, not grant/force
'services' upon those who cannot afford them and/or don't desire
them. Let us take for example a diabetic; did you know the FDA
says that NOTHING can treat a disease except for drugs and
surgery? Suppose I wanted to use an alternative, natural method
for treatment, do you suppose that the government (really, I mean
you) will fund my purchase of anything except drugs? Further
more, will they approve surgical costs if I don't follow the
exact plan, set forth by a panel of doctors, approved by the FDA
(which is funded by pharmaceutical companies)? No! To get funding
you will have to as you are told.
All that aside, the government cannot contribute to the wealth of
a nation, it only consumes by force. Ergo, we need to keep its
power very limited to that which is moral and correct. One cannot
separate the word voluntary from philanthropy.

I have a question in regard to Medicare. I switched to Secure
Horizons back in April of this year versus Medicare (part A, B, C
& D) and now I want to go back to Medicare and get out of
Secure Horizons. Is anyone else with Secure Horizons and what is
your opinion of them? I am NOT paying extra for this *Medi-crap*
coverage.
Our country is slowly moving towards Socialism/Fascism aeven
though the global elitists are quite disappointed that the H1N1
Swine Flu Vaccine has failed (many people KNOW how toxic this
vaccine is and that it has long term affects immune-wise) and
hardly anyone has died from the swine flu in general. There is no
mention of Vitamin D3, and how it can literally protect you from
the flu and many other illnesses and you can bet that Big Pharma
will try to figure out a drug to replace Vitamin B3, or rather
*convince* the sheeple, and get the FDA to approve it. All one
has to do to be decieved is watch CNN, Fox News (although I have
to give them some credit for having the balls to occasionally
tell the truth.)Ofcourse the CDC gives exaggerated percentages of
the *death* toll and it is SO absurd!! Depopulation by
Innoculation WAS the plan, but now I'm certain they will come up
with a NEW virus, create it in a Baxter lab, release it into some
third world country while Baxter & Novartis laugh all the way
to the bank. Keep in mind that the elitists just can't go around
murdering people so they have to come up with plan B. If the
*Sheeple* want to believe this is just another conspiracy
theory....think again, then do your research..................Or
go to the slaughter. This is happening right now...in OUR
time....and it is all part of the equasion.

redistribution bill now working its way through Congress. The
Representatives and Senators will have their voting records

waiting and we will not forget. We will campaign against you and
you will become unemployed just like the rest of us. You want

You want to have your healthcare rationed and stand in multiple

Why is it that nearly every dollar of stimulus money that the
Obama administration spends seems to have some kind of "community
organization" connection? As a general rule I ignore conspiracy

it certainly seems that Pres. Obama and Congress are raiding the

fundamentally transforming America into a socialist polity,

I have been going to a great deal of trouble to show that this
whole Health Care Package is a $100 Trillion dollar
package.
Sooooo, this is why the AARP is in bed with the Government, wow,
Welcome to the first steps for Force Pay in a split petition. wow
! this is what I get for staying out of issues for over 30
years...
This story is one of thousands of people who have been dumped on
by Insurance Companies. So One day on a blog site i asked the big
why... Why force pay into a failed system of Insurance Companies
and at the same time tax that all ready burden system ? It is
because of a dirty little secret. This health care system is a
$100 trillion dollar bread maker per year, and the tax lie was
the secret of the 10% per cent tax across the board, so where
does this secret tax money go ?....,....
I can show on page 100 at our site a conflict of information of
numbers released by Officials, and it looks like a lot like
borrowing from Paul to pay Petter... until I noted the balance of
a number with just a top ten list of Health Care Insurance
Companies, and this threw my mind off, so at a kind of a low ball
figure what is 100 milliom Health Care members x $100.00 per
month x 12 months ? Then I pulled a list of several hundred HCIC
COs. It is stated that over 45 million people are not covered. So
I did this at $5.00 per month for the poor x 12 ? And last for
this blog, I pulled the top 1000 Companies that face force pay.
Please remember their are around 373 to 400 million people that
are legal in the U.S. and around 117 million
illeagle........Soooo, some body is taking cookies out of the
jar, ohhh yea the are only around 250 million people old enough
to work at a job, but according to lay offs there are around 173
million + people still working....
Hmmmm I got a little more work to do,

Keith| 11.18.09 @ 1:58PM
I cancelled my membership when AARP started being a proponent for this administration and not for Retired Persons. Considering that AARP's membership efforts start with 50+ folks, it means that a substantial part of its membership is still employed in the workforce and see the pinprick of light as not being the end of the tunnel but the headlight of an oncoming diesel of the train of disaster that's going to run us all over.
If AARP takes benefits from the Govt (TARP) and its leadership are donating to a particular party then AARP is no longer working for its membership, is it?
tim johnston| 11.18.09 @ 10:15PM
It ain't a diesel, it is a pair of UP Challengers at full throttle with the Johnson bar all the way forward with a mile plus long train of laden cars fixin to smash our country to pieces. The engineer has tied down the saftey valve and the fireman is hell bent on blowing the coal load straight out the stack. This won't be at all nice.

I thought the comment was very descriptive, a great analogy and brought back memories of my model railroading days.
evan jungbluth| 11.22.09 @ 5:29PM
What do you find so amusing in the train analogy, and how is it a " backwoods" comment? And even if it were, is it in your mind that backwoods people are not to be allowed to express an opinion? I would not have chosen to comment here if it didn't appear that you believe only the erudite people should be allowed to contribute to the discussion.

The notion that AARP has the best rates for suppliment policies is wrong. In fact they have some of the highest - they count on name recognition for business. Smells like a bribe to me, especially since it deprives their memberships of benefits that then have to be paid for. It has the appearance of impropriety and is unethical to lobby for the removal of advantage in order to sell an AARP product.
C| 12.3.09 @ 6:38PM
jobs-training program...
...the idea is to help train and place seniors in jobs around the community. The jobs created are private sector jobs not associated with AARP.
Money spent helping people find jobs, might not payout to individuals but might assist in finding those individuals work.
...doesn't seem that dastardly to me.

jlrlee| 11.22.09 @ 10:22AM
Also, call them at 1-888-687-2277. Everytime you call, it costs them money. Call them once and then push the redial button 9 times. If 100,000 people will call them 10 times a day, it will cost AARP a million dollars a day. And tie up their phones, too.

While I disagree with using tax-payer money for the Recovery Act and I disagree with AARP's endorsement of the healthcare bill, I can say that SCSEP is one of the few areas in which the Recovery Act money was well spent and was actually job-related, rather than spending the money on something like building a dog park.

I just have to know:
What is it with this intolerance to providing health care to your citizens? After all the US is more than willing to spend trillion on, let's face it, at pretty stupid war. Why not spend that money to help your own citizens?
Don't you think it'll cost less if you maintain respectable level of yearly exams rather than to go in only when you have a problem that could have been prevented? That's not rocket science people.
Having universal healthcare does not make you socialist or communist or fascist or some pseudo-non-american country. It improves the general well fair and happiness of american citizens. What's wrong with that?
Jar Head| 11.20.09 @ 3:09PM
youpplrnutz...your comments about the current U.S. Healthcare system are so far off-base. We citizens of the good old, war mongering (save the assess of most of the planet) USA have the absolute best health care on the planet...we don't need need a new system, especially anything like the socialist (yes, whether you can see it or not, all others are a form of socialism) cabals you so like.
What you fail to realize is that the "healthcare" debate in the U.S. is not about healthcare...it's about POWER! Power of the socialists (yes, that again...Pelosi, Reid, Obama...actually Marxists) to take over the US economy...control the economy/money and you control the country. So no lectures from afar on U.S. Healthcare, because you simply don't get it....I remind you, it's all about socialist/Marxist political power...they can't get it any other way...never through the ballot box.
God bless Texas...hope to make it across that border before the secession is underway.
Dan (another jarhead)| 11.21.09 @ 7:34AM

Jar Head| 11.20.09 @ 3:12PM
And, since you saw fit to chastise Jess with your not elitist comments about his spelling/vocabulary...let this not be elitist either....but you need to educate yourself on the term "well fair"....the correct context would have been "welfare"
Jeff| 11.21.09 @ 1:16PM
One good reason is that when the national debt is $12.5 trillion and rising we cannot afford to add $1-2 trillion/year to it when it does nothing to reduce or control the cost of health care.
GEDoug| 11.22.09 @ 9:57AM
Check your premise. I think you miss the point. The legislation currently being proposed is not about providing health to all; it's about changing the relationship between government and it's citizens. The progressive agenda is to grow government, nationalization, and control. Which is what these bills, if passed, will do. There are many obvious ways to address the issues of controlling health care cost and providing insurance to all that does not include the complete over haul and government control of our health care system.
happyexcdn| 11.23.09 @ 12:10AM
Dear youpplrnutz
As a VERY HAPPY CANADIAN EXPAT living in the greatest country on earth (USA) let me remind you of a couple of Canadian realities:
1. Canada enjoys an opportunity to forgo a real defense commitment both in substance and cost because the US, naturally, protects its northern border and polar access. The Canada that fought so bravely in WWI and II was destroyed by that nightmare known as Pierre Elliot Trudeau. The Canadian troops fighting so bravely in Afghanistan deserve not only support but a country worthy of their sacrifice.
2. There are MANY Canadians, including politicians like Belinda Stronach, who are both smart enough to know and, in some cases, wealthy enough to get to the US for the type of healthcare Canada only dreams of. Tommy Douglas had a big heart but never understood that the social network of small town Saskatchewan that inspired his vision would never and could never translate into nationalized/socialized medicine. Liberals seem to forget that theory and reality are not synonymous. SOCIALIZED MEDICINE IS A FAILURE.
3. The U.S. actually spends more per capita on healthcare than Canada. The fact that the spending is privately funded rather than publicly stolen through over taxation and dysfunctional bureaucracy does not belie the reality that healthcare you buy through a company, even where abuse exists, is never as far off the mark as the waste and dysfunction of a bureaucrat.
4. Canada was a wonderful nation prior to the nightmare of 1968. The Canadian people then, like Americans now, allowed themselves to be seduced by that socialist, narcissistic, francophile Pierre Elliot Trudeau. He sold the great country of Canada for a mess of political pottage. The Canadian people have spent the decades since trying to escape the liberal/socialist/ franco centric nightmare and restore the traditional conservative values that are still bedrock in places like Alberta - the promised land of Canada.
5. Lay off the American stereotypes, especially as you preach against their application to you. These are God fearing, country loving, charity paying champions who have always paid for the world's sins and the world's arrogance with their blood and treasure and the lives of their children. They are the final bastion of decency in a world gone wrong. God Bless the United States of America.

The democrats cant even get their heads out of eachothers ass**.... once the republicans get this it will be squash!!
youpplrnutz| 11.20.09 @ 1:41PM
I'm not trying to be elitist but it's "PASSED" not "PAST."
You've provided nothing but rhetoric. If I wanted that I'd watch Limbaugh, Hannity or Coulter.
You haven't answered my question. What's wrong with every american citizen having health care? I'm not talking about illegals or tourists. I'm talking about hardworking americans that have paid into the system. Why can't they get the health care they need without going bankrupt?
It's an honest question devoid of partisan bullshit. I just don't understand why there is a portion of the US population that's so vehemently against providing it's own citizens with proper medical care.
Jar Head| 11.20.09 @ 3:18PM
If you really knew your stuff, you'd realize...no one goes without health care in the USA....just ask any emergency room director...we take all comers...including illegals!!
Most often, users of the emergency room method don't have the insurance they could for any number of reasons, often simply because they DON'T want the insurance and are not willing to pay premiums. That they make that choice freely and now your ilk feels that I should pay their premiums, by definition, is Socialism. I for one refuse to live under such a putrid political structure without a fight!
youpplrnutz| 11.20.09 @ 4:20PM
Thank you for your answer Jar Head.
You're right I don't know much about american style health care other than don't get sick in your country or risk losing everything. That's why I'm asking. From my perspective, health care is a privilege of being a citizen of my country and one that I'm more than willing to pay for. $100 a month is paltry when compared to my health and that of my family.
I'm from Canada and despite what your news tells you, most of the people I know are happy with health care here. Coming from me that means a lot as many members of my family are extremely reliant on our health care for a number of reasons (I won't bore you with details). We pay into the system and are provided with everything we need. We still pay for medication but from what I've seen it's much cheaper than in the US.
So what you're upset about is the "choice" to have or not to have. I'm assuming as a Marine you have some form of medical insurance. Do you pay for it out of your salary? What would you do without it?
And FYI when you say things like "... my ilk ... " you position yourself as "the crazy guy not worth listening to." This is why conservatism is failing, the automatic segregation of "you" vs everyone else who don't share your opinion. I'm not trying to fight with you. I'm trying to have an open, adult conversation. Let's leave the insults to the elementary kids.
texas transplant| 11.20.09 @ 5:11PM
I think what 'jar head' is trying to express is the sentiment that most people of the United States have grown up in an era of limited government interference. We have worked hard to provide things like health insurance for our families. When the government interferred and began regulating the insurance industry years ago, prices skyrocked not only for health care, but also insurance. No one should go without health care - hence public hospitals and clinics, medicare and medicaid.
A true independent study needs to be done on the reason for the increase in the actual costs of health care. Why does a doctor charge a person with no insurance $85 a visit, but with insurance $45 a visit? Our recent government has a history of doing what's best for the interests of a few and not for the masses (ie - unions, lobbyists).
oldpap| 11.21.09 @ 8:56PM
To mention an earlier reply , the reform being sought now is a power grab , not really healthcare reform for the good of the people. Also , we are not against the hard working , paying into the system people having insurance but, our Constitution says when it is presented in this context it must be available to all , including illegals in this country. Our government , the Democrats , wants to GIVE FREE HEALTHCARE TO THE ILLEGALS so they will have a larger voter base. I don't know what the ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT situation is in Canada but , here it is at least 12 million people. The rates with the new REFORMS are supposedly higher than what most people pay now , plus there will be higher taxes , fees and fines which raise the cost higher yet. I am sure they will be higher than 100 dollars a month. I have a reasonable insurance plan through my employer and the combined amount paid out for my spouse and I is approximately $1,100.00 per month. I also read recently that British Columbia is having to raise rates and Ration the care even more to their citizens. Most of us just do not want this kind of reform. The U.S. Government also has a very poor record of success when running any kind of business , in fact no success at all.
chilloutyo| 11.22.09 @ 4:00AM
Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Canadian_and_American_health_care_systems) says Canadian per capita health care costs are US$3,678 per capita per annum. That is aboot $300 per month (not $100). I bet you are not old and don't have cancer because your wonderful system aint very good at dealing with such useless old-age people's problems. My Canuck skateboarder friend was fond of the system 'cause it was great with scrapes and minor trauma, though.

Ted M| 11.27.09 @ 2:37PM
Life, Liberty, Property...
That's all government can protect without violating each individuals right to that which is their own. That is the crux of the issue, in order for any government 'provide services' to any individual it must first perform what is an illegal act for any individual. If I steal money from you and then use it to buy food, prescription drugs, medical care, a home, or a new car, for those whom have not, the principal will still land me in prison for theft. Therefore, when a government takes from the whole of society (and makes us feel better because they took more of the property from those rich kulaks), is it not still theft? Perhaps, you prefer legalized plunder.
My money is my property, our republic government was instituted to protect the rights of every individual, not grant/force 'services' upon those who cannot afford them and/or don't desire them. Let us take for example a diabetic; did you know the FDA says that NOTHING can treat a disease except for drugs and surgery? Suppose I wanted to use an alternative, natural method for treatment, do you suppose that the government (really, I mean you) will fund my purchase of anything except drugs? Further more, will they approve surgical costs if I don't follow the exact plan, set forth by a panel of doctors, approved by the FDA (which is funded by pharmaceutical companies)? No! To get funding you will have to as you are told.
All that aside, the government cannot contribute to the wealth of a nation, it only consumes by force. Ergo, we need to keep its power very limited to that which is moral and correct. One cannot separate the word voluntary from philanthropy.

I have a question in regard to Medicare. I switched to Secure Horizons back in April of this year versus Medicare (part A, B, C & D) and now I want to go back to Medicare and get out of Secure Horizons. Is anyone else with Secure Horizons and what is your opinion of them? I am NOT paying extra for this *Medi-crap* coverage.
Our country is slowly moving towards Socialism/Fascism aeven though the global elitists are quite disappointed that the H1N1 Swine Flu Vaccine has failed (many people KNOW how toxic this vaccine is and that it has long term affects immune-wise) and hardly anyone has died from the swine flu in general. There is no mention of Vitamin D3, and how it can literally protect you from the flu and many other illnesses and you can bet that Big Pharma will try to figure out a drug to replace Vitamin B3, or rather *convince* the sheeple, and get the FDA to approve it. All one has to do to be decieved is watch CNN, Fox News (although I have to give them some credit for having the balls to occasionally tell the truth.)Ofcourse the CDC gives exaggerated percentages of the *death* toll and it is SO absurd!! Depopulation by Innoculation WAS the plan, but now I'm certain they will come up with a NEW virus, create it in a Baxter lab, release it into some third world country while Baxter & Novartis laugh all the way to the bank. Keep in mind that the elitists just can't go around murdering people so they have to come up with plan B. If the *Sheeple* want to believe this is just another conspiracy theory....think again, then do your research..................Or go to the slaughter. This is happening right now...in OUR time....and it is all part of the equasion.

I have been going to a great deal of trouble to show that this whole Health Care Package is a $100 Trillion dollar package.
Sooooo, this is why the AARP is in bed with the Government, wow, Welcome to the first steps for Force Pay in a split petition. wow ! this is what I get for staying out of issues for over 30 years...
This story is one of thousands of people who have been dumped on by Insurance Companies. So One day on a blog site i asked the big why... Why force pay into a failed system of Insurance Companies and at the same time tax that all ready burden system ? It is because of a dirty little secret. This health care system is a $100 trillion dollar bread maker per year, and the tax lie was the secret of the 10% per cent tax across the board, so where does this secret tax money go ?....,....
I can show on page 100 at our site a conflict of information of numbers released by Officials, and it looks like a lot like borrowing from Paul to pay Petter... until I noted the balance of a number with just a top ten list of Health Care Insurance Companies, and this threw my mind off, so at a kind of a low ball figure what is 100 milliom Health Care members x $100.00 per month x 12 months ? Then I pulled a list of several hundred HCIC COs. It is stated that over 45 million people are not covered. So I did this at $5.00 per month for the poor x 12 ? And last for this blog, I pulled the top 1000 Companies that face force pay. Please remember their are around 373 to 400 million people that are legal in the U.S. and around 117 million illeagle........Soooo, some body is taking cookies out of the jar, ohhh yea the are only around 250 million people old enough to work at a job, but according to lay offs there are around 173 million + people still working....
Hmmmm I got a little more work to do,

All of this fear. All of the compassion for those suffering people out there for lack of a good Health Care System. Everyone FAT dumb and happly about the way things are. When did you politically wake up and ask the Republicants to address Health Care during the 8 previous years of Bush Adminsitration. I hope you don't send a hit squad out to take care of me. Everyone is an expert on the bill (from what you hear on Fox News no doubt). God had mercy on millions of people last Sunday night and someday you will realize it if you can tear yourself away from Fox News.

Another reason that I would regard joining a political party to be such a valuable thing is that dramatically positive and liberating experience.

AARP and the Obama gang are connected at the hip and don't let them fool you. A former AARP member. Everyone needs to cancel their membership and make a loud statement because AARP is no friend of seniors.
