Here's a video from Glenn Beck which seems to show interim White House communications director Anita Dunn listing two of her "favorite political philosophers" in a speech: Mother Teresa and... Mao Tse Tung.

Dunn initially juxtaposes the two to make it a joke. "Not often coupled with each other," she says, to a few laughs. Dave Weigel thinks the whole thing's a joke that everyone but Glenn Beck gets.

At that point in the video, it is clearly a joke. But then Dunn goes into a somewhat long history of Mao and Chiang Kai Shek in 1947 that's a little bit too bright, and a little too hagiographic. It suggests that she was in fact not joking that Mao is one of her favorite political philosophers. The joke was the juxtaposition between him and Mother Teresa, not her beliefs. Her love of Mao's political philosophy, unfortunately, doesn't seem to be one of the speech's jokes.

If Anita Dunn does not understand what is wrong with citing Mao as a favorite political philosopher, then she is out of her mind. Is there anything in her background to suggest that she is indeed this crazy? Or is this simply a clip taken out of context?

UPDATE:

Weigel notes in his blog post, and this Think Progress post expands on the point, that McCain and other right-wingers have also been quick to use some of Mao's sayings, e.g. "it's always darkest before it's totally black."

Of course there's an important distinction between reciting aphorisms that are fairly universal and anyone could have said, and drawing a lesson from the specific actions and thoughts of a mass murderer as they pertain to mass murder -- which is what Dunn does in the clip.

The more significant problem with interpreting this clip as evidence that Dunn is a revolutionary communist is that it lacks context. Beck played three or so full minutes of the clip on his show, but even so there are still possible mitigating circumstances.

For instance, it's possible that it's such a friendly and ideologically-attuned audience that Dunn thinks she can get away with making fine points about Mao without being questioned on the larger point that she deplores him as a communist dictatory. It's entirely possible -- I've certainly been at events where liberals feel comfortable enough with the audience to discuss the effiencies of communist health care systems without first bothering to disclaim communism's atrocities. Similarly, I've heard conservatives praise South American dictators for implementing certain free-market reforms without mentioning at the same time that they appreciate that the people they're talking about were in fact dictators.

The other problem is that, as far as I'm aware, there's no other information out there that suggests that Anita Dunn is the kind of person who would talk about Mao's achievements, let alone be a secret communist sympathizer.

Then again, she is the White House's communications director, and the bottom line is that she's supposed to communicate her political preferences a little better than this.

I do wish this site knew how to spell, it is Mao Ze Dong. (which means, literally, Hair Pond East) Imagine reading a Chinese website that spells his name Gren Breck.

As to the speech, yawn, at American ROTC classes they teach the Art of War by Sun Tzu, and he was in the employ of a corrupt dictator. Are you going to suggest the American military agrees with the politics of Sun Tzu, or will they simply take his knowledge and put it to better use? Yeah, the woman screwed up in her phraseology, as I said, yawn.

Besides getting the pinyin wrong for Sun Zi, beihai also gets it wrong for one of Dunn's favorite "philosophers," Mao Zedong. Leaving aside the validity of characterizing Mao as a philosopher, to translate Chinese names literally is to commit one of the classic Sinological blunders: would anyone seriously consider referring to comedian David Steinberg as "Beloved Stone Mountain?" Or Albert Einstein as "Noble One Stone?"

If you insist on using Pinyin, then SunTzu should be Sun Zi. If you still use Sun Tzu, imagine reading a Chinese website that spells the name of Glenn Beck as Gren Breck.

If she just spoke about strategy, it is certainly fine to use Hitler or Bin Laden as her guides. But please do not use a mass murderer as her favority political philosopher.

Actually Mao Tse Tung is spelled in Simplified Chinese 毛泽东 and in Traditional Chinese 毛澤東. There are many ways of spelling Chinese words when its not using the characters. If you've ever been to a Chinese speaking country you may find that they also spell many things in as many or five or six different ways. Unless of course they are using characters, that's really the only "correct" way to spell something in Chinese, since you seem so concerned about it. Good point though about why Mao was actually a really great guy that we should all respect.... oh wait you only talked about his name. He was an evil man who was responsible for the deaths of millions of people. Why? Because he was tyring to make communism come about by instituting socialism.

honestly, she's probably got dry mouth from taking SSRI or tri-cyclic anti-depressive drugs. its a common side effect especially when you talk. i'm not being facetious. i used to take zoloft, paxil, cloazepam, wellbutrin, (not all at once) and thats EXACTLY what i would do to try to re wet my mouth when speaking

Wikipedia says: In April 2008, it was announced that Dunn, who had joined the Obama campaign in February, would be the director of communications, policy and research operations for Obama for America, where she held the title Senior Adviser and was one of the major decision makers of the Obama campaign.

So, she is one of Obama's major decision makers, and SHE THINKS OF MAO ALL THE TIME.

The Wikipedia entry about Mao indicates he was responsible for many, many deaths, including many whom he ordered killed because they opposed him politically, as well as many who died of famine due to failed collectivist policies.

I agree, to some degree, that her physical attractiveness is not the important issue. But when the ugliness of her words is somehow "enhanced" by her looks, I can't blame people for noticing. After all, how many millions did Mao, one of her two favorite philosophers, murder?

Truly amazing - Anita Dunn is now attempting to write off her reference to Chairman Mao as a joke. While the initial part of the speech, coupling Mao with Mother Theresa, may have been a joke, her admiration for Mao's philosophy later in the speech, "you fight your war, I'll fight mine," came across loud and clear.

He took the doctors and put them in the fields and sent their children to be slaves in Tibet. His ideas were that everyone should be the same, poor and bridled by the communist government. My 11 year old son noticed what she was doing with her mouth and facial expressions. I explained to him at the time that it was a sign of a medical condition, either a medication or brain-function issue. It is quite obvious. Anita Dunn just gave us a compelling justification for implementing the most barbaric methods of torture on the detainees in Guantanimo. Don't listen to what others say - do what is right for you. Never mind the rule of law, never mind civility, and what happened to the "world consensus" the left was so concerned about? Didn't the left preach for EIGHT YEARS that the US was "wrong" to "go it alone" with regards to Iraq? Using this "philosophy", one could argue anything and justify it to anyone who will listen.

Ms. Dunn's cognative process is holier than Mother Theresa, and my prediction is that Dunn is done.

I'm sorry folks, but this has got to be accelerated...the fight against this overall agenda has to be accelerated...this is more complicated than anyone has time to unravel...the only reason I am enveloped in this is because I am an unemployed professional with my primary source of income eviscerated.....that's right....eviscerated...I originated and approved FHA / VA loans which were full documentation loans and carried loan limit "ceilings" relative to statewide county loan limits....started to see the bottom drop out in late 2006 when the real estate values were out of control and thereby "required" stated income / no- doc loans in order to faciliate them...I did not participate in this madness and helplessly watched what I predicted over 4 years ago... Does anybody care to understand that a "select" few bank were saved here by the "FED" and the Treasury Department ? Does anybody know that a record 100 banks are now insolvent and out of business ? Not Goldman Sachs...they made 3 billion dollars in the second quarter this year buying up toxic assets (mortgage backed securities) at bottom auction levels....Wall Street keeps trading derivatives......this is madness... The Fed is monetizing the debt because there are no takers for the T Bills...etc... it's not good... The only people on board with this administration are union people and their contractors which basically constitutes ALL government employees...and the numbers are growing...the private sector is under attack and the private sector is the basis for growth in this country..... We need to change this course and stop talking about it......the only way, apparently, is to get the right people in office....a monumental task at best..
