Obama Lies on Single-Payer, Disses Post Office

In a just-completed New Hampshire town hall meeting, President Obama stated that he never said he supported a single-payer health care system. But as clearly evidenced by this video, in 2003, he declared: "I happen to be a proponent of a single payer universal health care plan."

Meanwhile, at another point of today's town hall meeting, Obama was pushing back against the idea that the creation of a new government-run plan would drive private insurers out of business, and he said that UPS and FedEx were doing fine, but "it's the post office that's always having problems." Oops!

The gaffe arose from the inherent contradiction of those arguing for the introduction of a government government-run plan. On the one hand, Obama and other supporters of the idea argue that we need to have a strong government plan to create more efficiency, drive down prices, and "keep private insurers honest." Yet at the same time, they have to make it appear weaker to push back against those of us who argue that it will threaten private insurance and move us toward a single-payer system. So then you get statements in which Obama, in the course of arguing for a government-run system, takes a shot at the government-run post office.

UPDATE: Here's the video.

There goes that voter base... What is he gonna do to make it up to them? Probably have a beer summit again, where will they park all them little white trucks? Maybe Cliff Claven could give him the answers to health care.

Obama citing the postal service in an argument IN FAVOR of government run health care is classic gaffe - the kind of gaffe where a politician accidentally tells the truth!

Don S| 8.11.09 @ 3:15PM

Funny comment about the Post Office Mr. President. Have you ever considered that the USPS is the only one of the carriers being controlled by Congress? Is it the Post Office that is screwed up or is it the politicians controlling it?

Henry| 8.11.09 @ 3:16PM

Obama is putting the Congress between Barock and a hard place. It is becoming clear to even the Democrats that he doesn't have a clear plan to achieve his impossible goals. Insurance reform, yes. Government health plan, no.

Don S| 8.11.09 @ 3:25PM

It is time to start repairing what's broke and stop legislating it. Nobody in this country is responsible anymore for anything. We are ruining our children by telling them it's the governments responsibility to make sure that they are ok and doing the right thing. We are becoming so thin skinned in this country that we can't even make a comment on anything for fear that we will damage somebody's self esteem. The way this country is going, we are going to make the French look more sturdy a people in the next 30 years then we are. I feel sorry for our children and grandchildren growing up in a country so watered down that we are afraid to sing the national anthem in English for fear that we may offend our illegal immigrant community.

He forgets about the new credit card regulations that are going to make those of us that drive cars and take vacations that we can afford have to pay more in fees and interest to cover for those who are maxed out to the hilt in credit card charges for everything that those of us who pay our bills defer till we can afford them. Another example of responsible people paying for those who aren't. Seems to be the new American way; just another "Ready, Fire, Aim" approach to "fixing" America. I am not trashing poor people, just poor people driving nice new cars, wearing designer clothes and watching big screen LCD t.v's while defaulting on their loans.

Obama Touts Single-Payer System for Health Care

Amy Chozick reports on the presidential race from Albuquerque, N.M.

“If I were designing a system from scratch, I would probably go ahead with a single-payer system,” Obama told some 1,800 people at a town-hall style meeting on the economy.

DC| 8.11.09 @ 6:16PM

Dear John--as another commenter suggests, actually reading the various "health care" bills oozing out of the Democrat-controlled Committees is precisely what is giving rise to the fear and anger. Have a quick look, genius:

Special Treatment for Socialized Medicine. (Kucinich Amendment text) Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D., Ohio) won Committee support for an amendment that would allow a state to get an Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) waiver if they set up a single-payer system in the state. The state-based single payer system would operate in lieu of the National Health Exchange and public-insurance option embodied in House bill. Under the Kucinich amendment, a state could override ERISA, federal law governing self-insured companies. It is worth noting that for Americans in such a state who liked and wanted to keep their private health insurance — a promise President Obama has made repeatedly — that promise would be nullified under the Committee amendment. It is also worth noting that the Committee did not provide for any other policy option for states, including free-market options, except the adoption of a state-based system of socialized medicine.

Job Losses. (Hoekstra Amendment text) The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the current national unemployment rate is 9.7 percent. But the House bill has an employer “pay-or-play” mandate, which include a tax on employers of up to 8 percent if they do not offer a federally approved benefits package to their workers. Economists note that taxes on employers are generally passed on to employees in reduced wages or other compensation, including job loss. To forestall the impact of the House bill on employment levels, Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-Mich.) introduced an amendment that would suspend employer mandate provisions if the national unemployment rate equaled or exceeded 8 percent for 2 consecutive months. The Hoekstra amendment failed in Committee on a voice vote.

Deficits. (McClintock Amendment text) President Obama has repeatedly stated that he wants to sign health-care legislation that is “deficit-neutral.” In order to ensure that objective, Rep. Tom McClintock (R., Calif.) offered an amendment that would prevent major provisions of the bill from being enacted, or implemented, if the Director of the Office of Management and Budget found that they were not deficit-neutral. This amendment also failed in Committee. Meanwhile, Congressional Budget Office director Douglas Elmendorf stated that the House health-care legislation “significantly expands the federal responsibility for health care costs.”

Taxpayer-Funded Abortion. (Souder group health Amendment text, Souder taxpayer funded abortion ban Amendment text) The House bill, as currently drafted, allows the secretary of Health and Human Services to outline the minimum benefits that must be included in any health plan. There is no specific provision in the bill that would require insurance coverage of abortion. However, since the decisions over benefits are left to the secretary of HHS, with recommendations from a newly created Health Care Benefits Advisory Committee, there is nothing to prevent the current or future secretary from including abortion coverage in Americans’ health insurance. That is why a number of prominent pro-life Democrats in the House of Representatives have insisted that there be a provision to prevent taxpayer-financed abortion in the House bill. Meanwhile, Rep. Mark Souder (R., Ind.) offered two amendments: one that would prevent requirements to cover abortions in group health plans and another that would prohibit the use of taxpayer dollars to fund abortions. The Committee defeated both amendments. In other words, the federal government could mandate that abortions be covered by health-insurance plans available through the national health-insurance exchange.

Gutting Worker Choice. (Kline Amendment text) The key issue in the emerging health care debate is the validity of the President’s promise that Americans who like their coverage would be able to keep it. Rep. John Kline (R., Minn.) proposed an amendment to give employees greater say regarding the preservation of their employer-sponsored health insurance. The Kline amendment would allow employees to conduct an annual referendum to determine if their company should be subject to the employer mandate provisions currently attached to the bill. The amendment was soundly defeated, with 28 Democratic members voting no.

The Doctor-Patient Relationship. (Price Amendment text) Under the House bill, the federal government would determine what benefits must be included in an “acceptable” health insurance plan. Rep. Tom Price (R., Ga.) offered an amendment to ensure that patients would be able to contract privately with doctors and other health-care providers, even if such procedures fell outside of the guidelines for health plans in the newly created national health-insurance exchange or the public-insurance option. The Price amendment passed on a voice vote.

Want the Truth| 8.11.09 @ 9:14PM

The President is not giving us the entire picture when he says you can keep your private insurance. You can. He just doesn't tell it all. (Not unusual) On page 16, the bill clearly states that as of the day the bill becomes law, no new private insurance policies can be written. This means if you change jobs or want to change insurance, you must go on the public plan. In a few years or less there will not be any private insurance companies .... and oh by the way all those people will be out of jobs. The administration will then have the single payer system they want and more control of our lives than we need or want.

Karen| 8.11.09 @ 9:15PM

Post Office, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Fanny May, Freddie Mac, IRS, 2008 TARP, 2009 Stimulous, Congress itself - you tell me one Government run program that isn't in a financial mess; full of fraud, waste, and abuse (admitted by VP Biden on National television); and doesn't have it's own government beuracracy the taxpayers have to pay for. These examples alone should scare everyone away from a Government-run health insurance plan.

For those of you that have heard that this plan won't affect those on Tricare (per Rep Gifford, AZ during a telephone town hall ), you might want to know that currently as soon as you are eligible for Medicare you can no longer keep your Tricare policy, thus with this bill decimating Medicare, it will eventually affect even Tricare policy holders.

And to think I've paid into Medicare and Social Security for the last 35 years - now thanks to our Government's fraud, waste and abuse (welfare, medical, education, prosecution, detention, loan defaults, etc. for illegal immigrants; pork projects, uneccessary Congressional travel at taxpayers' expense, etc.), it looks like I won't get any of the benefits I've paid for all these years when I'm eligible in 10 years.

Hey John,

This is one of those right-wing idiots who has taken the page-paragraph references by those opposed to 0bama's health-care plan and looked them up against the 1,000+ page bill.

Virtually all of the complaints are valid. Phrases like "death panel" might not come literally from the bill, but all you have to do is connect the dots, and that's exactly what we'll get. But if you would rather put your life in the hands of people like 0bama, Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann, etc., be my guest.

The big question is: How can ANYONE support this bill, when they don't know what is in it? You should be thanking us "right-wing nuts" for tearing this thing apart, because you left-wing nuts are going to get your day before the "death panels" just like we right-wingers. Only the elite will be able to avoid it. We "regs" (as John Kerry referred to the "regular people") will be treated like the dirt that 0bama and the rest of the Democrats think we are.

Health care reform is a desirable goal, but this bill is not. Tear it up and start all over again; as Jesse Jackson said about welfare reform back during the Clinton administration, "mend it, don't end it". So here's a suggestion: most everyone agrees there are 2 major problems with today's system: carrying over coverage for "existing conditions" when you change policies, and the cost of the policy premiums. Why not address those issues, instead of ripping up the whole system?

Odanneyboy| 8.11.09 @ 9:36PM

I filed EEO, lost because I am not a member of a group or minority that has "historically" been discriminated against"...sorry, I'm a white guy. I was fired again this year because I broke my ankle. I applied for time off using FMLA again, but was fired 5 days later for not having medical documentation. The law says I get 15 days to submit it. Try to find a lawyer who will fight the government. You can't. I say leave it to UPS and FedEx, they promote for brains, not quotas.

Postal Rage| 8.11.09 @ 10:19PM

First of all, it's not the "post office," it's the Postal Service. A post office is one office. I thought Obama was a "scholar."

Secondly, the Postal Service gets NO tax money. All of its revenue is generated by the products it sells. And the products are not the problem, it's the government interference. The government controls the price to the point that the Postal Service can't make any money. The Postal Service has been shrinking in size, spending, and waste for years, but the bureaucrats control the price customers pay, how much money we have to keep in escrow, etc. and the stinking unions won't let us fire employees that can't do their jobs.

...and then the same bureaucrats tell the USPS to "compete." Obama does make his case accidentally. The government can't compete - even when it controls the price, the service, and the product.

I just wonder how the unions will spin his comments since they are in the back pockets of the Democrats (always support them and rally for them) and have been for years...

The two biggest reasons American businesses can't make money: Unions and Democrats!

But that's no surpise...

This is only the second issue that I ever got involved with. Now I am sorry I did. I understand differences of view. I certainly do not agree with much of how President Obama is "fixing" things. I didn't agree with many of the things President Bush did either. All of this vitriol is pretty sickening and certainly does nothing to make things better. LIAR LIAR LIAR does not fuel debate, only inflames it.

Don't you stupid liberals understand. We are all going to suffer along with children that aren't even born yet. I'll accept the healthcare plan if you agree for all politicians to go under the same plan. Also no more free rides for our nation's so-called political leaders. Didn't you notice that B.O. did more campaigning out of this country than in it. Tell me Why? I agree with B.O. on one statement he made. "We are moving out of the recession." BUT......... right smack dab into a major DEPRESSION. Politicians are elected by us. So, since they can't handle it, let's vote them out. "Let's Tell them that WE want to vote one this stupid bill." It's time to stop talking and start telling the leaders in D.C. that we put them there and we can vote them out as well. It's time to stop talking and start doing things about this mess. One more thing......Unemployment!!!!!!
The rate of % of unemployment only shows the percent that is still drawing money....NOT the people which is actually unemployed and losing everything they own. I am a disabled Vet But I still was born, raised and fought for this Country. I love this Country. Please People...let's keep it The UNITED STATES of AMERICA and not The Union of Socialist America. Oh, Don S. Don't you get it? WHY would you want to fuel debate with a person who does not tell the truth (the definition of liar)? [By the way, naming a behavior is NOT name-calling.]

Think about it. Seriously. What good is a "debate" with someone from whom you can't believe a word that is coming out of his mouth in this so-called "debate"? You cannot debate with people like this. Everything they say is just words, mean nothing, and they can't even remember what they said. They just need it to "sound good". It has NOTHING to do with what they actually intend to do. So why would we want to fuel more "words" from Obama and his minions? THEY ARE JUST WORDS. I think we've heard enough.

Maybe someone should tell Obama and his minions that WHAT THEY DO SPEAKS SO LOUD, WE CAN'T HEAR A WORD THEY SAY!

I saw a note from John at 5:09 calling conservatives idiots for believing the news media that doesn't lie. It is quite apparent that he hasn't taken the time to read this horror story bill. I thought it was bad until I started reading it, now there is no doubt what a travisty it is. This is a bill brought to you from a guy who doesn't know who runs the USPS.

Pat| 8.12.09 @ 4:24AM

When reading his bill I saw on page 203, "The tax imposed under this section shall not be treated as a tax". Typical double talk by our loving president Osama Obama. It really does say that.

Lizzie Parella| 8.12.09 @ 6:32AM

Would Obama want a do-over? LOL Comparing the proposed healthcare plan to the Post Office is prescient! Why mess up the healthcare plans for 70 to 80 percent of the public with a new plan to cover less than 20 percent (and it is less than 20 percent, as illegal aliens would have healthcare; counted in the uninsured are those who have OPTED NOT to have healthcare in the first place...which is a matter of free choice; and many have not signed up for EXISTING health benefits the government offers through Medicare, Medicaid, SCHIP, etc.!!). Is THIS what we want from our government? More entitlements??? More debt??? Come on folks, call your representatives...call AARP...be civil and polite, but get your message across. IT'S WORKING...THE PEOPLE ARE SPEAKING OUT ABOUT THEIR DISSATISFACTION WITH THE WAY THE COUNTRY IS GOING...KEEP IT UP!!

Jim Mason| 8.12.09 @ 7:38AM

In reference to the competition between UPS, FedEx and the Post Office, Obama said, "it's the post office that's always having problems."

So why don’t you go fix the post office instead of creating another problem?

Barbara Barrs| 8.12.09 @ 8:19AM

Mr. Obama: Fix it--PRIVATIZE IT! Works every time!

Thingumbob| 8.12.09 @ 9:05AM

Let's see if I get the Obamacide healthcare bill rationale correct: Insurance companies are rationing healthcare. Rationing healthcare leads to people unnecessarily ill or dead. That's evil. The oversight board set up by the healthcare legislation will have the final say on appropriate coverage for patients. That means rationing (or "triage", if you prefer). Now the government can take over from the greedy insurance companies that are causing patients to go without healthcare. In the current budgetary crisis we must have a major cutbacks on healthcare costs. Why? Because we are spending trillions to bailout too big to fail banks (e.g. Goldman Sachs)and insurance companies' (viz. AIG)gambling debts (AKA derivative securities.) Therefore I believe now our liberal government under Obama wants to be brought into the business of doing evil liberally in its own right. Bravo!

Hey all- you should stop trying to reason and get "John" to see that we're all informed people- we all read the bill... we don't go on sound bites from Fox News... John was probably paid by Moveon.org, or the ad in the Craig's list, to post here and argue with people. Just like everyone else at a town hall meeting that supports this socialized crap. They really are paid- while they accuse us.

I think the time is long gone for trying to get people to see how bad this is. They don't care to see- they don't care to agree, and by negotiating with them, we weaken our positions. Stand up, speak free and be unafraid. And read the bill. (There's more in there than you might think!!!- and it's all bad)

I am reminded of the campaign trail when Obama was poking fun at people critical of his ideas... to paraphrase, he said, "Some people think my ideas on healthcare may seem socialistic..." The thing is, guys, he NEVER DENIED IT. All he did was try to take the scary sound away from it.

Don S| 8.12.09 @ 10:05AM

Oh Wisegal. I get it all right. I get that the only challenge that we could pit against Obama for the Presidency was McCain with Palin. I don't fault Obama for getting elected; I blame the Republicans for not presenting a strong candidate to challenge him. I am not as politically astute as most of you so I will never win a debate on politics, but I do know that I don't trust Republicans or Democrats on everything. The joke about "how do you tell when a POLITICIAN is lying, When His Lips Move", doesn't differentiate between parties.

Antonia| 8.12.09 @ 10:12AM

Yes, the U.S. Postal Service is always in trouble, yet the private entities -UPS and Fed-Ex- are doing just fine. It follows, Mr. President, that Public Health care will always be in trouble and private health insurance will always do well. Does he realize he's burying himself?

GoldTracker| 8.12.09 @ 11:45AM

I saw that when he was giving the speech and about fell out of my chair. Unbelieveable admission. The logical conclusion then is to let private industry solve the problem.

But of course that is in no way the goal of our government.

Bob | 8.12.09 @ 12:02PM

Of course he's right, a public plan cannot compete with a private one PROVIDED IT'S NOT SUBSIDIZED BY THE GOVT. All I have to say is READ THE BILL MR. PREZ. The bill does structure the system where public insured only pay 60% and private insurers pick up the tab for the rest. So if a medical service cost $1000, someone with a public option pays $600 of that. The other $400 has to be added to the bill of people with private insurance.

Ethan| 8.12.09 @ 12:55PM

Oh come on now guys, I'm sure when Obama cited the Postal Service, he really meant to compare the health care overhaul with one of those government-run programs that actually worked efficiently.

you know, like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, TARP '08, Stimulus '09, the DMV, unemployment compensation, etc...

BigEdsBlog| 8.12.09 @ 2:07PM

Obamacare will be just like the post office, long lines and shitty service. However, there is one major difference between the two. If the post office screws up, little Johnny doesn’t get grandma’s birthday card she sent him. If Obamacare screws up, you die.

Why is everyone trashing the Postal Service? I used to be a contractor for them. Most of them are the hardest workers you have ever seen. Of course they have some slackers and incompetents, just like most everyone on this blog that knows someone within their company, or looks inward; not to mention the Executive Branch of our Government. Fact is, if everyone trashing the Post Office, including President Obama, his cronies, and those of you on this site had an inkling of what it takes to get your mail and the actual costs involved with the restrictions put on the Postal Service by those criticizing them, you would thank every Postal employee that you come in contact with. Gas goes up, unions control everything, congress jerks them around, the President trashes them and most everyone on this site pay's their bills on line and has taken away business from the Post Office in the name of technology. Either support them or quit bitching about them. You can't have it both ways.

The single payer plan is the only way to move forward at this point; when Congress returns and the smoke clears I hope that common sense makes a return.
