Newt Gingrich has followed Rush Limbaugh in calling Sonia Sotomayor a racist, based upon her 2001 statement, “I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experience would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.” CNN Sucks notes in its political blog:
On Wednesday, Gingrich tweeted: “Imagine a judicial nominee said ‘my experience as a white man makes me better than a latina woman.’ new racism is no better than old racism.”
Moments later, he followed up with the message: “White man racist nominee would be forced to withdraw. Latina woman racist should also withdraw.”
President Obama’s spokesman Robert Gibbs was asked about Gingrich’s charge, and he responded:
“I think it is probably important for anybody involved in this debate to be exceedingly careful with the way in which they’ve decided to describe different aspects of this impending confirmation,” Gibbs said.
Be careful or what? Tell us what will happen to those who want to express their opinions about this, Gibbsy.
And don’t try to convince us that there are “oh so many other great aspects of this appointment” to consider other than Sotomayor’s ingrained racism and incapability to mete justice out with blindness towards race, religion, class, etc. Carrying Newt’s point a bit further, had a white male nominee expressed his superior experience to a Latina woman’s, there would be no discussion about the other “aspects” of his “impending confirmation.”

Newt Gingrich seems to me one of the strongest and most admirable Republican leaders.
Unlike most Republicans these days, he's a man of ideas; he seems as comfortable on public radio or a CSPAN panel as he does on Fox; he's affable and intellectually curious. Frankly, I disagree with just about every one of his conclusions, but I always listen carefully to what he has to say. He was great on Meet the Press this weekend, and readily demolished the poor Democrat he faced.
However, calling Sotomayor a "racist" is nasty and beneath Newt. Arguments about "reverse racism" are sometimes reasonable, but to call a woman like this a "racist" -- and include her among the most abhorrent people in our society -- is just not acceptable as civil political discourse.
I disagree with the New Haven decision; I understand why one or two of her statements might raise concerns. I do not understand or approve or respect calling her a racist.

Welcome to planet Liberal, Murphy. Newt. along with countless other GOPer's, and more than a few independents and some rare dems, are continually labelled "racist". and have been for decades.
Perhaps the novelty of Newt's use of the term surprises you, and I cannot readily recall such a counterattack, but say it as politely as you can, and the judge still has some explaining to do on her quote.
FWIW, I actually think she's not nearly as awful as many believe, and the POTUS could have selected much worse. The final vote will be very interesting, though.

dear IC, anyone who uses the word, perhaps, is milquetoast and should desist, politely! the fact that this judge thinks, belves that your station in life should be a consideration if you present yourself to the scales of justice is an invidious characteristic! she should be a legislator, then! it's outrageous if sam alito had stated the reverse of what she's being quoted abouted he would be run out of town! I.C. that called plain and simple, not perhaps!

Sotomayor is not a racist-----she's just an arrogant opportunist! She, like Obama, would not have had her good fortune in life, if not for the kindness [ie affirmative action] of others. Her arrogant I'M BETTER THAN A WHITE GUY mentality disregards the fact that others PAID FOR her life's status [her/his mommie and daddy certainly pay for anything]. There is no free lunch in life, except when it comes to the Sotomayors and Obamas of this world. Granted, they're intelligent and have worked hard in taking advantage of their good fortune, but they have received scholarships and grants that were funded by less fortionate and hard working TAXPAYERS. They did not PAY FOR their extensive educations [there was no thorough investigation into Obama's financial ability to PAY FOR his Princeton/Harvard bills from his post-graduate employment as a COMMUNITY ORGANIZER in Chicago earning probably $20000/year at best]. The arrogance of Sotomayor and Obama now raising the POWER/FIST-BUMP SALUTE is insanely ludicrous and imbicilic. Of course, who gave them the ability to do this? You got it----the American voter, who will PAY FOR IT big time in the future!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What's with the veiled threat, Gibbsy? Spit it out, thug.

It is clear that Obamacon selected this nominee in order to further his social justice agenda. But what is unclear is if the Republicans are going to be fooled by the media and democrat (alas, I repeat myself) propaganda and fold their tents.
Anything less than an attempted filibuster will not suffice.

Gibbs warning about disagreeing with the Messiah's selection is not the first warning of this administration. It seems they are threatening and collecting a lot of names in their lockbox.

Like the classic threat that Obama made to the bank executives, "My Administration is the only thing standing between you and the pitchforks." Awesome, ain't he?

About half the time I like Gingrich - as when he has the cajones to say something like the above. And certainly in other instances he has been a welcome breath of fresh air in the increasingly fetid Republican tent.
But I will never forgive him, among other things, for appearing with Nancy Pelosi in that stupid "Let's fight global warming together" campaign. It REALLY rubbed me the wrong way. There is no excuse for that on a couple of levels.
Another cringe-inducing moment was his exploiting of the bird flu a couple of years back when he hosted a Fox News special that stoked fears irresponsibly.
And I'm not nuts about his coming out with a book recently about Reagan - maybe the book is good (I'm sure it probably is), but there's a crassness to his obvious attempt to wrap himself in the Gipper's garments that, taken with these other incidents, leaves me queasy about the man.
And don't get me started on the "5 principles of a Successful Life," co-authored with his daughter.
Gingrich is a font of ideas and smart as a whip - no doubt. But in his peripatetic branding offensives, he trips over his ambition far too often and looks as foolish as a cuckold of the old English theater. I'd love him to be a cabinet member in a Republican administration, but as president he'd end up squishy.

That is stupid. To read racism into that statement is a fault of the reader. I also hope that a [insert whatever you want] that has had the richness of her experience would make a better decision than a [insert whatever you want] who HAS NOT HAD THAT EXPERIENCE.
