President Obama's radical new nominee to replace Associate Justice David Souter on the Supreme Court, Sonia Sotomayor, used to serve on the board of LatinoJustice PRLDEF (White House backgrounder), one of the racial grievance groups that helped to sink the judicial nomination of Honduran-born Miguel Estrada in 2003.

Along with groups such as the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF), LatinoJustice fought a war of attrition against President George W. Bush's 2001 nomination of conservative Miguel Estrada, a Honduran-born immigrant, to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. Democrats in the Senate filibustered the nomination and a weary Estrada withdrew from consideration in 2003.

Today LatinoJustice PRLDEF, a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit, hailed the nomination of Sotomayor on the basis of her ethno-cultural heritage. "As the second largest and fastest growing population in America, with a large pool of qualified individuals to choose from, it was wholly appropriate for the president to nominate a Hispanic," the group said in a written statement. (PDF)

According to the group's website, it gets some of its funding from George Soros's Open Society Institute.

A search of philanthropy databases reveals other significant donors to LatinoJustice to be Carnegie Corporation of New York ($1,025,000 since 2000), Ford Foundation ($2,280,000 since 2001), Rockefeller Foundation ($1,275,000 since 2000), and JPMorganChase Foundation ($70,000 since 2001).

Among radical left-wing groups, it has a fairly garden-variety agenda. A captive of identity politics, it pushes for enforced multiculturalism, diversity, bilingual public education, race-based gerrymandering of electoral districts, race-based employment quotas, tenants' rights, and illegal immigrants' rights.

LatinoJustice PRLDEF was known as the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund until last year when it filed Articles of Amendment with New York State to change its name. (See pages 35 to 41 of its IRS Form 990 for the group for Tax Year 2007.)

It is the silence of defeat Matty boy. The good guys have lost. The enemy has too much fire power. We need a bigger Army to fight back. The conservative divisions alone are not enough.

Matthew Vadum:

I blame feckless GOP members of Congress and highly placed GOP politicians around the country. They often talk like conservatives, but they act like Democrats. They're too often cast as hypocrites, or there too stupid and gutless to fight back against unwarranted characterizations. Here, in Ohio, we had a lousy governor who ineptly managed to get himself tripped up by nickel-and-dime access problems. And a Republican administration allowed a significant portion of its unemployment compensation fund to be invested in rare coins offered by some sleazy GOP operative. Turds like these around the country have left conservatives and the GOP with little ability to oppose the nomination of Sotomayor.

Robert Martin| 5.27.09 @ 7:20AM

Miguel Estrada was not born in the US. Judge Sotomayor was born in the states of Puerto Rican parents, who also were natural born american citizens. If she belonged to an organization that fought for Puerto Rican's rights, so what? What is the crime? I think her experience will make her a great Supreme Court justice.

jeff theriault| 5.27.09 @ 7:39AM

What bothers me more than anything else about this nomination is her LatinoJustice PRLDEF's support for illegal immigration -- a position directly at odds with the wishes of the overwhelmingly majority of this country's citizens. Hasn't the flood of illegals screwed up enough of everything already?

John| 5.27.09 @ 7:58AM

There is no such thing as a trial run for a Supreme Court Justice. She could serve 25 or more years.

Everything the PRLDEF

John Thompson| 5.27.09 @ 7:58AM

Don't get angry, get busy. Conservatives have to take a page out of the liberal playbook. The president promised transparency. Get all the information about judge Sotomayor out there!! Let this nomination be as transparent as humanly possible!!!

KPeterson| 5.27.09 @ 8:01AM

To give her a chance is a lifetime appointment. Her experience is no better than anyone elses. It's just different.

Bottom line question: Is She THE BEST choice, or just a politically expedient choice? I think the second.

EllisWyatt| 5.27.09 @ 8:12AM

"Miguel Estrada was not born in the US"

So what? Unless Mr. Estrada was trying to run for President, his status as a Naturalized US Citizen is irrelevant. There is no requirement that Federal Judges be native-born citizens.

"If she belonged to an organization that fought for Puerto Rican's rights, so what? What is the crime?"

Who the hell said anything about this being "a crime"? The point is she is a member of a group that is pursuing an agenda that is at odds with the best interests of this country. Multiculturalism and identity politics are going to destroy this country. The last person I want for such a critical job is someone holding those beliefs.

Russ Howard| 5.27.09 @ 8:21AM

The Constitution has been dead for a long time, at least since the advent of Earl Warren. President Truman worked violence on the Constitution by his nationalization of the steel companies during the Korean war. Before then of course, Roosevelt made a mockery of the Constitution by packing the Supreme Court with timid judges who approved programs grossly unconstitutional. Since then, judicial arrogance and lawlessness have continued the tradition.

Jefferson wrote that the country that depends on the good will of its government to rule wisely is bound for tyranny. The government will construe that good will as a means to expand its powers to anything it can get away with. Better Jefferson said "...to chain the government to a written constitution" so unequivocal in its limitation of state power, that reasonable minds could not find in it a rationale for its ascendency to tyranny. Well, he did not anticipate the mendacity, or ideological avarice for power of modern Machiavellians-- for whom, the Constitution means exactly what they say it means nothing more, nothing less. "We are not final because we are infallible" wrote one justice, "We are infallible because we are final."

Presently the Constitution has the same relevance as a Catholic relic: a piece of saintly bone, a shaving from the true cross. While they were held to be sacred, in fact, they were a corruption of religious practice. They were used as a divine tool of good luck and perhaps as a means to a final resting place in heaven. Martin Luther jokingly made the point that if we counted all the true Apostolic relics owned by the Catholic Church then it possessed not only the true cross but the bones of all seventeen apostles.

It is an infamy that not a single white male was considered for this vacancy, regardless of his qualifications, this for constitutionally aberrant reasons of race and gender. In the selection of a Hispanic woman, strictly because she is female, Hispanic and a leftist ideologue, we have most certainly not placed on the Court the greatest legal mind or the most worthy applicant. Instead we have bowed to tribalism. We will have placed on a Supreme Court, well beyond the reach of democracy or, for that matter Constitutional due process, a woman who will decide what she likes best, the result that appeals to her sense of empathy, then bend, twist, and uproot the Constitution in her rationalization of its constitutionality.

Finally, in some ruling (perhaps, that all white males must sign an oath attesting to their inferiority to Hispanic females), she will then hold to her breast, with as much fervor as an ancient Catholic, a splinter of the forearm of St Anthony, the once sacred Constitution of this United States, and say to us all, that she has discovered the justification of this construction in its words, in a document 200 years old, and written by hand on parchment, in dark purple ink.

Phil| 5.27.09 @ 9:56AM

This woman's beliefs are a direct threat to ideals that founded this country. She does not desire equality. She desires dominance over the population. Most liberals do. They believe they know what's best for you, me, and the rest of the country. And if you cannot accept that then they are willing to force "their good will" upon you through a tyranical governemnt. She has made rascist statements that no conservative appointee would survive. But the media in the US will not call her out because in general they are puppets for the democrats and the left.
As soon as republicans and conservatives oppose her nomination, the democratic left will cry rascism. Even though this woman directly opposed Miguel Estrada's 2001 nomination. Completely ridiculous.
Americans, conservatives...heck, anybody with common sense that wishes to see our country continue with the freedoms that we now enjoy, better wake up and start speaking out against the far left ideaology that WILL take away your Constitutional rights eventually.

Any clown knows that everyone in America has a compelling life story but that alone does not qualify them to be on the Supreme Court. Sonya Sotomayor is not one of our top notch outstanding judges. As a matter of fact she has been overturned numerous times and made statements that she as a judge makes policy which is contrary to the Constitution. Plus she has made coents indicating that she is racist. All law abiding patriotic Americans should work hard to defeat Sonya Sotomayor's nomination because she is Anti-Constitution, less than mediocre, unqualified, and undeserving to be a Supreme Court judge.
