The National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn has endorsed Charlie Crist for U.S. Senate in Florida over the conservative favorite, Marco Rubio:

“I am pleased today to endorse Governor Charlie Crist for the United States Senate. With his record of reform in Florida, I know that Governor Crist will bring a fresh perspective to Washington in our efforts to fight for lower taxes, less government, and new job creation for all Americans. Charlie Crist is a tireless advocate on behalf of all Floridians and one of only three Governors who earned an ‘A’ from the CATO Institute for his efforts to restrain spending and cut taxes last year.

“While I believe Marco Rubio has a very bright future within the Republican Party, Charlie Crist is the best candidate in 2010 to ensure that we maintain the checks and balances that Floridians deserve in the United States Senate. Governor Crist is a dedicated public servant and a dynamic leader, and the National Republican Senatorial Committee will provide our full support to ensure that he is elected the next United States Senator from Florida.”

FLASHBACK: Just last week, Cornyn told the Politico he would stay out of the race, saying, "I don't think it's the proper role of the NRSC or folks in Washington to try to tell Floridians who their nominee should be, so I think that will have to work its way out."

Crist appointed more than one Democrat to the FL high court. As a FL GOP primary voter, I will remember his loyalty to conservative principles.

Bobbi| 5.12.09 @ 10:15AM

They just don't get it, do they? I cannot wait to cast my FL primary vote for Marco Rubio.

Bear in mind that he was avowedly pro-"choice" a decade ago and still has no interest in overturning Roe v. Wade.

Add to that some rumors about an "interesting" personal life and the fact that he's basically a vassal of big sugar at this point, and you have a lot of things to dislike.

The NRSC couldn't even wait to see if anybody else might enter the race. Charlie Crist is the perfect candidate for them, donkey light.

Cornyn's a Bushie, a waste of a perfectly good Texas Senate seat, who Texas is now stuck with till 2014. ALL buddies of the Bush family need to be rooted out -- I'll bet Jeb sits on his hands, even though he dislikes Crist and pretends to be a Conservative

Over on The Corner, John J. Miller asks, "Instead of trying to beat conservatives, the NRSC should save its resources for defeating Democrats."

Surely the man is just pretending to be naive here. Beating conservatives is the single, solitary thing the NRSC has proven itself both passionate about and capable of since the turn of the century.

For the Specters of the world to bolt the party complaining about how much *we* hate *them* is far too rich. The respect and support only ever flow one way down this street anyhow...conservatives might as well get smart and close the road entirely until two-way traffic can be assured.

Exactly, Bobbi - they just don't get it! Got a fund-raising call Sunday evening from the Pennsylvania State Republican Committee - and I enjoyed reminding the canvasser that one of the very first things they did when Arlen jumped ship was to try and find an "electable" candidate to challenge Pat Toomey in the GOP primary. I'd rather lose with my man than retain the seat with another RINO...

I cannot express how bitterly disappointed I am nowadays after voting for Sen. Cornyn not once, but twice. He has really turned into a DC guy and has completely forgotten his conservative roots in TX. Moreover, he cannot seem to grasp the basic idea that you won't attract people to the conservative cause if you don't stand up for conservatism, and standing up for conservatism means standing up for conservative candidates.

Hermit| 5.12.09 @ 12:25PM

Why not wait until after the primary? I am gettting seriously tired of "the party" making the decisions of who best represents the people...

They did the saem thing in RI and supported good old Linc Chaffee, I was makin gdirect contributions to his challenger because the RINO was a reliable Dem vote... The party which I had also contributed to saw fit to go with the RINO... I was covering both sides of a race not even in my state...

NRSC know this you have seen the last dime from this contributer.

Only way to stop this is to starve the monster for cash.
Make yuor contributions directly to the candidates you want or to conservative group like club for growth.

The upper hand has to be given to conservative candidates.

Maybe when the party has no cash they will realize the base is not with the moderates or liberals.....

Really tired of the insiders telling me what is 'best' for me.... out grew the nanny decades ago...

…he even gets started. But that kind of pragmatism is not working for the faithful, who are furious at Cornyn for getting involved in the primary, especially after promising just a week ago to stay out of that race. Erick Erickson, who blogs at Redstate, says that for the NRSC to support Crist in the primary is “ wholly unacceptable.” Erickson’s started his own campaign, this one against…
