In 2007, Barack Obama famously said, "If we have actionable intelligence about high-value terrorist targets and President Musharraf won't act, we will."

Today we learn that a series of missile strikes in Pakistan that killed at least 20 are suspected to have been carried out by the U.S., though the Obama administration has its lips sealed.

If true, it would certainly fit a pattern for Obama, given that the strikes occured just a day after his orders to close Guantanamo Bay within a year and tighten restrictions on interrogation methods. Remember that his statement about striking terrorist targets in Pakistan  came on the heels of his declaration that he would meet unconditionally with leaders of Iran and other hostile regimes. Maybe this is what we can expect from Obama -- any move to the left on national security will be  followed by action to reassure hawks that he isn't keeping his eye off the ball in the fight against terrorism.

Please, let's call it what it was: a stimulus package delivered to the Taliban.

Is this a liberal bait and switch or thrust and parry? I don't get it.

Perhaps this will be his solution for Gitmo: Release said detainees in wilds of Pakistan. Call that actionable intelligence. Then, send a Predator with some Hellfire missiles to finish the job.

"Suspected terrorist" are they? No one varifies this. May be they are innocent trible people. Is it American justice?

As many security analysts have been pointing out, the next major terrorist attack in Europe or US is likely to come from Pakistan.

Journalist should desist from peddling myths that the ----tribal areas---- bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan are the source of threat for USA. This is a grave under estimation of the Pakistan problem.

What about the rest of---"Pakistan"?? Daniel Pearl was beheaded not in the tribal areas, but in Karachi far away from the tribal area.

Karachi has been the coordinating city, nerve center for all Pakistani terrorist operations. The terrorist "charity" recently banned by the UN is based out of Punjab province, not in tribal areas. Major terrorist training camps are run throughout Punjab province and in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

Pakistani politicians and journalists say the drone attacks by US army are very unpopular in Pakistan. But let's look at what type of activities are very popular in Pakistan.

India has released transcripts of phone conversations of pakistani terrorists in Mumbai talking to the Pak istan army handlers in Karachi directing them who to kill, when to kill, etc.

" I have a Singaporean, Chinese and Belgian". Pak army handler at the other end in Karachi says kill them but spare the two muslims.

Think about this. This type of activity is very popular in Pakistan unlike the drone attacks. Why should the civilized world put up with this nonsense?

Thinking Pak istan army will fight Taliban is fantasy. It ain't going to happen. Our soldiers are shedding their precious lives and we are wasting tax payer money because of Pakistan's double dealing. People should wake up and decide how much money and lives we want to spend on this drama.

Pakistan has captured hundreds of terorists, and killed thousands. Pakistan has also lost over 1,000 soldiers in dealing with militancy. What does Pakistan get in return: threats and missile strikes.

Americans simply dont understand what alliances are, whether its Bush or Obama.

Nizaam| 1.23.09 @ 11:04PM

Well
US created and supported Taliban in afghan war against Russia, after that US became the only world super power. Then US decided to kill Taliban because they are of no use. Is anyone knows whats the actual problem between US and Taliban or Al-Qaida. Why they turned their friend ship into world hardest battle. There are no rules of war as we have seen without any reason US attacked and killed millions of Iraqis people. Now idiot US President Bush is saying it was his mistake to kill million of people they did not found anything from Iraq so today daily hundreds of people dying in Iraq who will put Bush in court for punishment.
Regarding India they got the opportunity to hit Pakistan in 1971 and captured Bangladesh and thousands of soldiers, why they attacked Pakistan when Pakistan was in problem in East Pakistan? it was internal issue of Pakistan that what was happening in east Pakistan. But well I said you do not need any reason for war so India came in the field as she found the chance.
Now India says that western are not helping in pushing Pakistan to act. Why India is not acting ? Is India afraid from something? Regarding efficiency of Indian Military we all know that after one month they came to know that Kargil is in control of Taliban or some says Pakistan. If someone has Kargil its mean he has whole Indian Kashmir. But US and western World jumped into the matter and threatened of Sanctions and isolation and favour of India in war against Pakistan. Well that’s was an excellent moves by freedom fighters but at the wrong time. You need only 10 semi trained people to capture Mombay?
Cheers

When pakistani intelectuals say that public opinion is against the drones attacking terrorists, that speaks volumes about the public. The irony is US funded the activities of pak military who trained teh terrorists..and our boys from alabama and missouri go there to get killed by weapons bought with the same tax payer money

The fact of the matter is Pakistan or Pakistan based groups have been consistently found to be the key perpetrators/actors of all Islamic-terrorism incidents that have happened around the globe. This has happened not out of thin air, but because Pakistan state has all along covertly and overtly encouraged, supported, and celebrated the concept of Islamic Jihad/terrorism in its population. Pakistan has taught its civilian population hatred and intolerance of non-Muslims through its schools, Madrasas, and Universities, while it has openly promoted and indoctrinated Muslim hardliners in its army and spy-agencies.

Pakistan has also double dealt the western nation and gotten tens of billions of dollars in aid claiming that it is fighting war on terror while in reality it actually provided safe heavens and training-grounds to Al-Qaeda, Talibans, and other Muslim terrorist organizations.

To the other Muslim nations of the world Pakistan has portrayed itself as the one that possesses Nuclear Weapons capability for the use of entire Muslim world. It is important to note here that, Pakistan’s nuclear weapon technology was illegally transferred to other rogue nations of the world by Pakistan government, but when caught Pakistani Govt. was quick to blame the chief of Pakistani Nuclear Program, A.Q. Khan, for this. The New York Times Magazine in an extensive article headlined Obama’s Worst Pakistan Nighmare says the biggest fear is not Islamist militants taking control of the border regions. It’s what happens if the country’s nuclear arsenal falls into the wrong hands.

Now Pakistan is trying to bluff the whole world by saying Al-Qaeda may be operating in the remote areas of Pakistan, whereas the truth is that Muslim fundamentalist and terrorists are operating in the heart of Pakistan from every big and small city of Pakistan. Pakistan’s madrasas, schools and universities, and its military and intelligence establishment, and many of its businesses, corporations, and charities operating from these big and small cities are openly promoting, supporting, and celebrating Islamic terrorism.

It is heartening to see Obama identify Pakistan from the get go as the key breeding ground for Islamic terrorism. Now it seems like the whole world is converging on Pakistan to solve this issue. Hopefully, it is now just a matter of short time that this menace will be finally curbed.

Gene| 1.25.09 @ 4:04PM

Well written Deepak, in my opinion the start of a peaceful existance between the Islamic and western world will have to start in the madrasas through out the Muslim communitys around the world , the teaching of hatred for the non-Muslim world will have to stop, when and if it does it will probaby take at least twenty years for a peaceful existance to start to evolve, until those teachings stop , that time is not likely to come.

coffee| 1.25.09 @ 6:55PM

Looks like Barack is off to a great start, on track to keep his word and restore some international credibility for the US

Gene| 1.25.09 @ 8:57PM

Is that coffee or cool aid

David| 1.25.09 @ 11:30PM

The incident like Iraq war are creating difference between western world and Muslim community. Israel killed more than 1000 people in Zhaza what you guys think its not terrorism. every one ask Hamas to stop Rocket fire which killed only one or two people. but why the great Scholar like Depak donot think the reson of why hamas firing rocket on Israel. thousands of people will be caught by militant group after these incident. we all know killing is not the solution. Extremist or religous political parties never won in election in pakistan but after Afgan war they got the sympathy of population.
