One Republican told me after Tuesday’s RNC chairman debate that Michigan’s Saul Anuzis would win because he’s “everybody’s second choice” for chairman. That’s one of those things you hear as a reporter and write it down dutifully and let the reader decide for himself whether there is any truth to it.

But Ralph Z. Hallow of the Washington Times had a bit of a shocker yesterday:

Several members attending a first-ever special meeting of the national committee on Wednesday told The Washington Times that they expect either Michigan party Chairman Saul Anuzis or South Carolina party Chairman Katon Dawson to emerge as the party’s top national official.
“I think [current RNC chairman Mike] Duncan wins the first-ballot plurality, but not the next ballots,” said Maryland RNC member Joyce Lyons Tehres, who supports former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele, an accomplished public speaker, for national party chairman. She said she thought Mr. Steele continued to lead the field after the Wednesday meeting, but others saw a trend.
“I sensed it was catching on, the idea that the next chairman should be a member of the committee, not a former member,” said Curly Haugland, a North Dakota rancher and committee member. . . .
“Saul showed his savviness and had the best grasp of the latest in communications tools,” North Dakota Chairman Gary Emineth told The Washington Times after the RNC member-only meeting at the Capitol Hill Club.

That kind of fits what I’d heard Tuesday. Anuzis is very much a hands-on operator, extremely energetic. He was all over the room at the Press Club before the debate, shaking hands and soliciting support. I caught him afterwards for a brief video interview:

I'm sorry to be a wet blanket here but has anybody stooped to consider what has happened to to the MI GOP on his watch? Seriously, someone needs to run the real Jenny-land numbers on his "work" there before they get another LAME-A**ed RINO in the national zoo.

Sally B| 1.9.09 @ 8:27AM

Somebody please pick me up off the floor! How can Katon Dawson be a serious contender? The Southern white guy who was a member of a whites only country club and resigned in preparation for running for the RNC Chair. What sort of message does this send? For God's sake! I mean honestly, do it and I will never vote Republican again, I will never donate another dollar and I will never volunteer another hour. My energy and money will go to the Democrats. Oh and of course Katon didn't know about his club's policy until he read about it in the press (after being a member for 12 years!). Ok, chalk him up as not only a racist but a liar. To even think that he's a seriously contender may lead me to walk away from the Grand Old Party of pasty old Southern men.

I have know Saul for several years. He is a can do guy speaks from the heart and his heart is in what he does.

Robert| 1.9.09 @ 11:03AM

J. David - to call Saul a RINO is simply absurd. Laughable. Discredits anything else you might say. Still, yes, folks are looking at what Saul has done, infrastructure wise here in MI, and they are impressed. Michigan is a BLUE state that votes GOP under the right conditions. 2006 & 2008 -- not the right conditions. Take a closer look. But again, you lost credibility with the "RINO"bit. Cheers!

Engler turned MI around from about #29 to #3 in the country, and when Jenny got in it all came undone, and EVEN worse the second time she got in. The national GOP has been able to get nothing from MI either, except great embarrassment. If the GOP is not ADVANCING no one should give a rats rosy red rear-end about "infrastructure" that is not advancing the conservative cause, there in JENNYLAND (two terms of FAIL, mind you)or anywhere else in the country. There is always lots of excuses, which will multiply under the new communist regime, where all the excuses in the world will mean diddly-squat. Results matter, excuses are just "skins of reasons filled with lies".

Talk costs exactly zero $...

J David| 1.9.09 @ 11:48AM

Michigan is what the entire country will look like very shortly, and it most certainly is to be blamed on more than just the commie-lib Dems.

Howard| 1.9.09 @ 12:04PM

Sally B is no better than a Drive-By Media "journalist". Probably a liberal anyway. I mean, are you kidding me, saying that TRIPE about KATON DAWSON! YOU ARE LACKING CONTEXT, Sally B! go here: http://tiny.cc/V4IOy
If that doesn't change her mind, I hope Sally B does leave the party because if she espouses any true R/conservative principles she'll be back later and we won't have to deal with her bickering now that we're in the planning stages.

Howard| 1.9.09 @ 12:14PM

J. David, you are eager to bash Saul, but who is your pick for RNC chair? Steele is an RLC-leading moderate / McCain type; Duncan suffers from far greater proportions of failure than you can speak about Anuzis; Saltsman has proven he cannot put together enough good media to defend his actions; Blackwell could really be described much the same as Saul, with even less character or communications experience. Lastly there is Dawson, who I believe is genuine and a positive force, but there is the white Southerner Hullabaloo that he has to overcome.

SallyB| 1.9.09 @ 12:38PM

Wow Howard, what's up with the personal attacks on me? Bickering? I hope it makes you feel better about yourself. Geez. freaking nuts.

KG| 1.9.09 @ 3:50PM

Saul and his ilk have made a lot of money off the MI GOP over the years. If he becomes Chair of RNC the racket will continue. If you like what Saul has done to the MI GOP, you will love what he will do to the RNC.

I'm sorry but getting friends on Facebook and Twittering does not win elections.

Red Phillips | 1.9.09 @ 10:16PM

Ron Paul supporters can't stand Anuzis because he tried to get Ron Paul banned from the debates. That's just great. Plenty of room in the GOP for baby killer Rudy, but no room for non-interventionists, the only truly conservative foreign policy.

I don't support any of these clowns (Steele and Dawson also [at the least] have Ron Paul problems as well.), but to criticize Dawson because he is a Southerner and belonged to a club is left-wing, cultural Marxist PC grandstanding. Shame on you Sally. The SPLC would be very proud.

ADS | 1.9.09 @ 11:47PM

The fact of the matter is that Anuzis had nothing to do with MI GOP losing this year. It was the national party and John McCain abandoning the state. It turned a lot of people off to the party, but yet Anuzis worked hard enough to get some big wins. He is the best choice and represents what most people are in this country, middle class and conservative. And because of his hands on approach and ideas, he would do more than any other candidate.

Sally B| 1.10.09 @ 10:30AM

Voicing disagreement that the future leader of the party should have been a member of an all whites country club results in nothing but personal attacks on me and name calling. What's wrong with you people?! Can no one disagree with you without immediate personal insults and outlandish accusations of being things like a Marxist. You guys are irrational, intolerant, childish and mean-spirited. And you represent the worst that the Republican Party has to offer. Tit for Tat only I'm not exaggerating.

Red Phillips | 1.10.09 @ 9:31PM

Sally, I called political correctness a form of cultural Marxism which is EXACTLY what it is. I called you a grandstander which is what your little more-PC-than-thou rant was. (Note cultural Marxist was modifying PC which was modifying grandstanding.) You used white and Southern (and guy for that matter) as if they were slurs. Why didn't you just call him a Cracker and get it over with? Since I am all those thing, I wasn't inclined to let your obvious condescension slip by. Not that you were trying at all to hide it.

Sally B| 1.10.09 @ 10:23PM

So, being anti-racist is Marxist? Whatever...I can't waste anymore time with this. You make me ashamed that I'm a Republican.

Red Phillips | 1.10.09 @ 11:04PM

Sally, re-read your original rant.

Red Phillips | 1.10.09 @ 11:21PM

Oops ... hit submit too early.

Sally, re-read your original rant. You were clearly holding the fact that Dawson is a Southern white man against him. Being against racism, properly and narrowly defined, is fine. Vigilant anti-racism, however, is a leftist ideology. It is the flip-side of racial reductionism.

And again, I said PC was cultural Marxist. Do you know what that means? Study up on the Frankfurt School, and get back with me. Do you really want to be on the side of those who seek to destroy Western Civilization?
