Once upon a time a rock star craving attention would simply bite
the head off a live bat. Generating that kind of buzz today can
only come by announcing one’s opposition to gay marriage.
Singer Michelle Shocked discovered this week that worse fates
await big-mouthed artists than rabies shots.
“You got to appreciate how scared folks on that side of the
equation are,” Shocked informed her San Francisco audience Sunday
night. “Once Prop. 8 gets instated and once preachers are held at
gunpoint and forced to marry the homosexuals,” she continued, “I’m
pretty sure that that will be the signal for Jesus to come on
back.” Shocked, and her shocked audience, laughed awkwardly at her
apocalyptic rant. The folk-rock singer then joked, “If someone
would be so gracious as to please tweet out ‘Michelle Shocked just
said from stage: God hates faggots.’”
On cue, that’s precisely what the ignorant indignant did.
Twitterverse Savonarolas chimed in: “hoe you better commit
suicide real quick.” The press compared her to the hateful Reverend
Fred Phelps. She strikes me more as a prophet — albeit, like many
seers, a slightly unhinged one — for anticipating that her audience
would willfully misinterpret her words.
An activist in Vermont organized a Change.org petition demanding
that club owners break agreements that they had entered into to
host the apostate radical’s concerts. “Freedom of speech and
artistic expression are critically important,” the petition reads,”
“but this isn’t about free speech. This is hate speech.” As it
stands, venues have canceled ten of eleven scheduled U.S.
performances. The lone holdout, a club in Madison, Wisconsin,
insists that they must wait on a decision from their boss when he
returns from vacation.
“WOW!” exclaimed the petition organizer. “The Telluride
Bluegrass Festival in Telluride, Colorado cancelled Shocked’s show
today. That’s right: Michelle Shocked’s entire U.S. tour has
evaporated within two days of her bigoted anti-gay rant.… But we’re
not done yet! Please keep signing and sharing so we can convince
European venues to follow suit and continue dropping the anti-gay
Ms. Shocked.”
Until Sunday night, everybody pegged “the anti-gay Ms. Shocked”
as a lesbian superhero. Rachel Maddow certainly did when she stole
Shocked’s haircut. The singer’s 1989 “On the Greener Side” video, a
feminist reinterpretation of the iconic “Addicted to Love” video
that replaced Robert Palmer’s female eye-candy with male models
imitating their blank mannequin stares, brought a politicized edge
to a relatively apolitical MTV in its 1980s heyday. So when police
arrested Shocked two years ago at the Occupy Los Angeles protest,
the news shocked nobody.
Despite the legitimate greatness of her 1988 near-hit
“Anchorage,” Shocked’s left-wing political sensibilities far more
than her artistic talents made her career. Her debut album, for
example, featured a picture of her arrest at a protest outside
1984’s Democratic National Convention as cover art. So it makes
sense that an audience built on ideological solidarity disappears
because Shocked has finally done something to earn her name.
Popular music fans are a forgiving bunch. If they can place
Chris Brown at the top of Billboard’s album charts after he beat up
his girlfriend, put Steven Tyler on American Idol’s seat
of judgment after he once secured custody rights to an underage
girlfriend, or beatify Michael Jackson after his disturbing
relationships with boys, then maybe a penitent Shocked will
eventually win absolution, too. Alas, some transgressions, like
embracing a political position that the voters of most states have
endorsed, don’t merit clemency.
Before the San Francisco club pulled the plug on Shocked’s
concert Sunday night, the singer characterized her beliefs as
“nothing worth getting a froth over.” She apparently didn’t know
her audience. “This is not a tribunal,” Shocked naively explained.
“This is one woman’s opinion.”
Whoever said all publicity is good publicity should have never
said it to Michelle Shocked. The nerve of some people to think that
they can continue to make a living after embracing a ballot
question endorsed (twice!) by a majority of California voters — in
the state of California no less. Rock ’n’ roll, a musical form
synonymous with rebellion, ends as conformity.
John Lennon observed that the Beatles bested Christ in the
popularity department. Michelle Shocked opined that marriage should
remain the domain of one man and one woman.
Heresies tell us so much about a society.

That's what she said.

She's a very talented folk and country/blues/rock singer. She's been around since the late 80's.
They don't play her on your local "Dinosaurs of Monster Rock" oldies station (targeted at mid-50's man-children who still listen to Def Leopard), so I'm not surprised you've never heard of her...

Isn't he great?
Everybody's Stupid because they don't listen to the CRAP that he listens to.
We're Idiots for wanting to listen to the Music that we like. The Music that we grew up on. The Music that defined our Formative Years.
We're just not as Smart as Doctor Dipshit because we don't get the Androgynous Station on our AM Transistor Radios. We're not Hip, because we're not listening to all the latest Boy Bands like Doctor No Friends does.
He's 46 years old, most likely lives with him Mother, and spends most of his time getting himself off to old pictures of his Sister and his Cousins when he's not busy Parading in front of the Mirror in his Mom's old Wedding Dress as the Radio blasts "I'm too Sexy".

Too funny!!
Hey, Timmy! I hear there's going to be a "Monsters of Rock" revival tour in your town! And they're doing free prostate exams for all you aging headbangers!

I saw her video Addicted to Love, more of a parody of Robert Palmer's. I thought it was clever and very funny. Then I forgot all about her. This just proves that the Left are the children of the French Revolution, [Off-with her head!] Barbarians they are.

Someone else who proves that Lumpy's Proletariat can't recognize the truth, much less handle it.
Most "rock music" these days is nothing but screaming obscenities and jungle drums, and it wouldn't bother me at all if ALL the rock concerts in the world were cancelled due to lack of interest. If this little lady is a Christian, she has just discovered the Jesus was right about the persecution we will suffer in His name. I'm not surprised that someone promptly suggested she kill herself. There's a lot of that going around.
Albert Constantine Jr.| 3.22.13 @ 8:39AM
I believe Lumpy's last name is Rutherford.
TLP| 3.22.13 @ 10:10AM
How do you know that, Albert?
I'm almost positive that I saw every single Leave it to Beaver, and I never heard anyone call Lumpy by his last name.
You have some splainin to do, Lucy.
Albert Constantine Jr.| 3.22.13 @ 10:22AM
Lucy's maiden name was McGillicuddy, if I recall properly.
I was paying attention to what Ward and June were saying, even when it wasn't to Wally or the Beaver.
Of course, if you were a real Leave it to Beaver" fan, your post would have started in your best Eddie Haskell voice "Gee, Albert, that dress looks nice today".

Bob Grant| 3.23.13 @ 12:57PM
Perhaps it was a "heady" tv show but was annoying to the extreme, and extremely difficult to watch with that headache-inducing computer generated background; so annoying, in fact, it made the Scandal video Good Bye to You seem therapeutic.
There's good reason Max got the Axe!

Just another liberal genius like Bouncy who was a radical feminist until she married the rich rapper, got pregnant and had a baby. Now she sings "Bow Down Bee-itches" from what I hear. She sold out her sisters for the rapper god tour.
It just shows what hypocrites so-called liberals are. If Perp found an attractive woman that did not have bugs in her pants and sores, he might go all in for heterosexual love. But since that ain't gonna happen, I guess we are stuck with Caliban as a $10 per hour MoveOn troll.
Nancy in NC| 3.22.13 @ 8:16AM
Once again the left proves their hypocrisy. They call for tolerance as long as one follows their prescribed agenda. Step out of that box and all bets are off.
Tolerant? Not so much.
Albert Constantine Jr.| 3.22.13 @ 8:37AM
The left loves artists who are provocative and shock sensibilities until their sensibilities are shocked.
Unlike the late Jesse Helms, though, they don't just want to cut off her government funding for her art; they will insist that she must die for her sin (either she must kill herself, or they will deny her a right to earn a living so that she might slowly starve to death).
squalis| 3.22.13 @ 9:28AM
We shouldn't get so high and mighty. I remember the response of our side to the Dixie Chicks and others over the years.
Perhaps we will see Shocked and Nugent playing together on Crossroads.
Albert Constantine Jr.| 3.22.13 @ 9:45AM
When the Dixie Chicks on foreign shores during wartime spoke about their shame regarding the Commander-in-Chief, I don't recall anyone saying they should die, just that people who disagree with their message or how it was said should stop listening to or buying their songs.
As I wasn't really paying much attention to them before that, my personal boycott of them probably didn't have much of an impact.
Goldwater Girl| 3.22.13 @ 9:59AM
It was the Dixie Twits boorish behavior that prompted the exercise in "free speech". While Alan Jackson and others were writing moving lyrics about 9/11, the twits chose to be ashamed of being from America. Frankly, I don't want to hear political opinions from any artists. Why do they think we care what they think?

TLP| 3.22.13 @ 10:54AM
I would disagree with your final sentence, old friend. (You spelled "Impala" wrong) One man CAN make a difference, even if it's only to himself.
I have a Boycott List as long as Purp's Dreampenis.
You name it, they're on it: Asner, Robbins, Robbin's Whore, (Mike) Farrell, Alda, Sheen, All of the Black ones, and the guy who played "Booger" on Rose Barr. There are so many more, and just not enough time.
I know that my one man Boycott is not gonna hurt any of these Multimillionaires who spend their Weekends at the White House speaking out against Multimillionaires.
When that whole thing with the French, happened a few years ago, and we got Freedom Fries? I made a list of every French-Owned Company doing business here, and gave it to everyone who bought one a my shirts, at the Fairs.
As former Military, you know that everyone is a Cog in the Machine, and they all combine to make a Cohesive Unit. The Gunnery Sergeant is no more important than the Guy in the Chow Hall, in the Big Picture. The Pilot needs the guys that keep them in Clean Sheets and Pillowcases. The Guys running the Flight Deck need the Guy running Supply. These one man Boycotts are the same deal.
Maybe we're not having an effect. But, maybe we are. All I know is that I can Kiss the Mirror, KNOWING that I at least Tried, and yeah, it was Worth it.
The Boycott AND the Mirror Kiss.
Albert Constantine Jr.| 3.22.13 @ 11:09AM
I don't disagree with your overall point about the power of one, the importance to the team, etc.
Still, though, my point was that as I wasn't buying their product before, my decision never to buy their product after had a limited impact.
TLP| 3.22.13 @ 1:28PM
What about the Kiss in the Mirror?
Surely, you agree with that.
Albert Constantine Jr.| 3.23.13 @ 11:29AM

I’m afraid I will have to register my concurrence, GG.
Due to some respect for some well-stated political positions that occasionally concur with my own, I usually try not to succumb to the temptation to engage in friendly fire.
Nonetheless, it has become too difficult for me to continue to ignore the Doctor’s unrelenting condescending attacks on TLP and others on the site who have the temerity to not agree 100% with his opinions, or dare to speak in a voice louder than his own.
For a mental health professional, his lack of insight into his own projection and megalomaniacal narcissistic posts is staggering.
Apparently, the reason he has such antipathy toward the Catholic Church and the Pope is that only Doctor Right is infallible, and those who merit his displeasure are heretics, uninsightful or bores.
If I cared to address him anymore, I would say ” Ph. D., heal thyself.”
Doctor Right| 3.22.13 @ 12:25PM
You guys in the TLP fan-club are highly amusing.
For the record, I used to ignore his idiocy when he went by his own name ("Timothy L Pennell"), and when he returned as "TLP." I thought he was a tedious bore - harmless, since I didn't bother responding to him - but a bore, nonetheless.
Then one day I posted something he disagreed with, and l'il Timmy couldn't take it. He instantly lashed out with his special brand of juvenille stupidity fully expecting me to cower and run for cover.
Oops!
L'il Timmy can dish it out, but he can't take it.
And as a mental health professional, I'd be remiss in my duties if I let Timmy persist in his fantasies. He needs to be immersed in reality.
For my own sake, it IS therapeutic.

Since you asked, while I was trying to avoid posting another uncomfortable truth, I will respond to your request.
Apparently, you are oblivious to the “You Misspelled” response, which is frequently used lately on the site to agree, disagree, or deflect from a post here over the past month or so, depending on the context.
It can be used to de-escalate a disagreement with someone of otherwise similar inclination, or to mock a pretentious fool with whom one disagrees (particularly if it accurately identifies an error from one who pompous asserts a position which presumes to be correct to the exclusion of others). In this case, it was the latter, brought up particularly since you exhibit a persona on this site where you can’t imagine making any errors.
When I observe your behavior on today’s thread, Dr. Right, I am reminded of a high school girl who can’t stand it if any of her friends have a positive relationship with anyone she considers to be rival. While you demonstrate significant intelligence in articulating your positions on a number of political issues, your emotional shortcomings repetitively demonstrate themselves again and again in the fights you pick with those whom might agree with 80-90% of the same things you claim to believe in.
Albert Constantine Jr.| 3.22.13 @ 10:05PM
I have witnessed others disagree with their fellows on the Right who experience temporary disagreement or feuds subsequently mend fences, with a prime example being Gary B with TLP. Despite past differences, both are able today to demonstrate their agreement in common positions, and allow for their differences, without requiring that the latter to be the dominant topic of the thread. I have also seen TLP attempt to bury the hatchet with you, to no avail.
One of the definitions in Merriam-Webster of “bore” is a tiresome person. With your repeated attacks on TLP and others with whom you should share some common agreement, you definitely meet that definition. Don’t take my word alone for it, inspect further down the thread for those who register disagreement, or implore you to change direction.
Personally, Doctor, I no longer care about your thoughts on any issue. You have become Stalin in 1942: we have a common enemy, but you have shown through your core and your personal behavior that you are not trustworthy, even with whatever common cause we might find.
Albert Constantine Jr.| 3.22.13 @ 10:07PM
In other words, while you claim conservative credentials ( and I believe you feel that you live them), you show the world through your narcissistic behavior an inability to relate to those who don’t bow down before you.
The characteristics that you ascribe to others with whom you express hatred and superiority (such as TLP) are demonstrated abundantly by you. The difference is, that while those such as TLP may have some of the characteristics you describe, TLP has a great deal of affability, which is something you have come to lack. As a result, many who might be inclined to find common cause with you are driven away as a result of you personality disorder.
Many others on the thread here today have tried to alert you to the destructive path that we have witnessed you taking. You try to dismiss us by calling us followers of TLP. While I count myself a friend of Tim, I don’t follow anyone. I do recognize when I am in concurrence with someone on many other issues though, and don’t hesitate to politely disagree and express myself on issues where I find an inability to come to an accord.
AuH2O Girl| 3.23.13 @ 12:17PM

Everyone here is opinionated otherwise we would not post, but most are friendly and sensible, such as the Contest Gang. We have a Village Idiot who posts under various names always saying the same lefty drivel.
Our friend the psychologist hates the Catholic Church, goes crazy when he sees the word Pope, and goes crazy at T's posts. From the first time I visited this site two years ago I always responded to the anti Catholic rants. But they were not as as bad as the departed Mullah, and had abated until the election of Pope Francis. I have no issue with his religion and try to respect others' religious beliefs, except for muslim jihadists or commie secularists.
I cannot understand why a smart educated psychologist comes here to attack the Catholic Church, or to personally attack T for no reason. What is the point? It is not debate. We rightly write JackWi off as an anti semite, but it still seems ok here to post anti Catholic bigotry as long as one claims to be right of center.
The political opinions of anyone who cannot make a choice between Obama v. Romney, stays home or votes third party, but LECTURE us, are irrelevant.
How do you justify watching Obama enact regulation after regulation, sign Obamacare, stop drilling, appoint Kagan and Sotomayor, let Americans die in Benghazi, and destroy our constitutional republic, but say, good let Obama win and the country be destroyed because the Reps did not nominate my candidate.

Anyway, Dr. R, I must disagree with you on one thing. The greatest linebacker of all time, as my father, who played against him in high school could tell you, is Dick Butkus. Check out Kentucky Fried Movie for proof.

"I find his shtick tiresome, didactic, and not in the least bit clever." Noted. Now, let's back to raking Obama and cadre of Leftist idiots over the coals. Spend your mental health skills trying to figure out what the hell goes on inside the minds Americans who want to destroy America. Help us understand why liberals can't stand their neighbors' freedom. Help us understand the nature of Marxism, which, to all the world, looks like slow suicide. My first instinct is to put the stupid bastards out of their misery, but can't do that. What's the next best thing?

GG,
This rapier wit you seem to think Dr. Right posseses is lost on me. I'm not feelin' it. I'll give him credit for being slightly right of center politically, and on occassion he'll throw in a chuckle-worthy quip but that's about as far as it goes.
His adoration of a potential murderer (Ray Ray) and increasing proclivity to go off the rails on certain political issues makes me question mental state. Perhaps he should take this into account when he renews his medical license.

With all due respect to the credentials, Dr. Right spends an inordinate amount of time on this site antagonizing those who do not fully embrace his views. The latest example would be his comments on this article. They drip with intolerance and arrogance. To a simple lay person, this seems odd coming from someone whose profession is to heal the psyche of others.
And, unless his last name is Right, don't you think his choice of username gives credence to my point?
I like him well enough, however, and agree with much of what he has to say. What sticks in my craw is his blind devotion to Ray Lewis, but I suppose that's my cross to bear.

Shelly started going to a black church and now she is aligned with that amazingly consistent group. She is a goofball and remains one. It is interesting what festers in the leftist communities. The contradications of the Left's Artistic Coalition simmers just below the surface. African-Americans culturally do not dig gays in the least. And the natural misogny of most rappers is ignored by feminists and lesbians alike.
Yet, feminists, gays, and African Americans supposedly get famously get along. And their Enemy Number 1 of course is Christianity. But, no one has ever considered what lays ahead. With Christianity waning in our pop culture and culture at large, there is one religion that for the moment is celebrated, if not endorsed by the litteratti and inteligentsia - Islam. Author Robert Ferginno predicts Islam will spread in America not through outright evangelization or even violence; he predicts if Islam does in fact grow here, it will grow through our pop culture. In one of his novels, the tipping point comes when a very popular young female Nashville singer/entertainer converts (think Taylor Swift). This is followed by another entertainer; which is followed by a famous actor. Since Islam is considered the "correct religion", and it is good for one's career, celebs race to the mosques to get in with the good crowd. This in turns influences hundreds of thousands of young people to "convert". What initially was a shallow decision made by the frivilous young quickly becomes problematic as for many of the young converts, for the first time there is something solid to believe in. All of a sudden feminists and gays find themselves on the outside looking in.
Petronius| 3.22.13 @ 11:14AM
Good one JP Soon Southern Baptists will be totally counter-cultural. The kids want to face Mecca? Let 'em. More bacon, pork steaks, and ribs for Us. But this too shall pass when they find out muzzies are into bestiality and PETA throws a hissy fit.
doramin| 3.22.13 @ 5:08PM
I'll do you one better JP. Think Sharia marriage. If Muslim marriages are legalized here in the U.S.A. Islam will take America by storm. Every man-jack-amongst-us will stampede to the mosques to convert.

I bet Michelle Shocked went at least 500 psychic miles that day. Maybe she had some memories of East Texas when she made her remarks.
God bless her. A person not afraid to speak her mind.
I like that some lefties claim that "hate speech is not free speech." I wonder if they make any other distinctions of that type.

"Hoe you better commit suicide real soon."

Seek| 3.22.13 @ 12:26PM
Musically, I always liked Michelle Shocked, especially her first couple of albums back in the late 80s. I even could overlook her foolhardy Left-agitprop. But now she's getting a dose of the real nature of the Leftism she espoused. So the issue has changed.
Some here might call this sequence of events "poetic justice." I say hold off on the conservative "serves you right to suffer" mantra. Treat her like a potential ally. She's experiencing first-hand the bullying, blacklisting and ostracism that go along with being "offensive." Hopefully, Michelle, bred deep in the heart of Texas, will draw the right conclusion from all this and become...a conservative.
The Only Good Democrat| 3.22.13 @ 1:17PM
She is not an ally and won't become a conservative. She will disappear. That is how the left is. A bunch of gays shouldn't make the mistake of showing up at her church. It would make bad press. Obama would be forced to trash another black church. Shelly has got into a lot of mischief. She was a lot cooler when she was just an immature kid with a mohawk singing about squatting in buildings.
Buck Ofama| 3.24.13 @ 2:55AM
>singing about squatting in buildings.

Seek, while I am reluctant to pigeonhole individuals who comment regularly here, after a while an observer can begin to develop a sense of the issue or issues that resonate with a specific commenter, and how they might choose to self-label or others might identify them in the various camps of conservatism or the Right.
While I find most of what you post to be fairly consistent, your last sentence causes me to rate you to be a little more of an optimist than I might have thought previously.
Occam's Tool| 3.22.13 @ 1:47PM
As for TLP and Dr Right: I think the world of both of you. I wish you liked each other. But I will continue to like both of you, and, should you find yourself in my neck of the woods, let me know through here and we will figure out a way for me to take you out for dinner on me.
Same for my other friends on the site. Many lovely people here.
Really, except for the Fudgepacker, I don't tend to actively dislike anyone on this site continuously. Occasionally Kinmg bugs me because he has a moderately severe problem with Jews, and Bowen bugs me because he is a Paleo Conservative, which is code for a Conservative antisemitic ass. Like Taki.

I have no dog in this fight but I hope when the bullets start flying you can tell from which direction the enemy is firing and just don’t start shooting at anyone you see that has a gun. Albert Constantine Jr.| 3.24.13 @ 3:42PM
Get your story straight, Evie. Is it a Nissan GT-R, or is it a Corvette? Is it $9295 this month, or even more than $10,000? Is it the nicest work, or the best job you've ever had?
It is time to be consistent. Inquiring minds want to know.

Another liberal has found out that "free speech" isn't really "free" unless you tightly adhere to the left-wing agenda. The most intolerant people in the world are liberals...
Occam's Tool| 3.24.13 @ 10:10PM
This month's TAS has an excellent article by Peter Hitchens on Gay marriage.
If I may speak professionally for a moment:
Degrade the importance of marriage, and fewer people will get married. Raise a kid out of wedlock, or withsingle parenthhod, and the more likely a kid will go wrong. Secondly, there will also overall be fewer kids born. Eventually, there will be more old folks than young workers.
This does not bode well for the future of such a society. In New Zealand, I found the worst group of adolescents I have ever seen outside of a Native American Reservation, both Pakeha and Maori.
When I moved there, I heard the term "partner" used a lot, something I had rarely heard outside of relating to homosexual relationships in the States. I thought it meant a lot of Gays in NZ. But no, I later found that there were a lot of heterosexual relationships which did not involve marriage going on for long periods, and children raised out of wedlock. One of the highest adolescent suicde rates in the world, too, and a pathetic amount of adolescent psychiatry and inpatient beds available.
To put it another way, Owensboro Kentucky with a catchment area of, say, 300,000 has more child and adolescent inpatient psychiatric beds available, serving kids with and WITHOUT insurance, than Auckland, New Zealand and Wellington, NZ COMBINED.
That's one example of underservice by an NHS. I can go on. This is an example of societal breakdown in a Liberal, G-dless society.
spike59| 3.25.13 @ 5:55AM
“You got to appreciate how scared folks on that side of the equation are,” Shocked informed her San Francisco audience Sunday night. “Once Prop. 8 gets instated and once preachers are held at gunpoint and forced to marry the homosexuals,” she continued, “I’m pretty sure that that will be the signal for Jesus to come on back.” Shocked, and her shocked audience, laughed awkwardly at her apocalyptic rant. The folk-rock singer then joked, “If someone would be so gracious as to please tweet out ‘Michelle Shocked just said from stage: God hates faggots.’”
---------------------------------------------------
I'm not suprised that the Left hasn't figured out that Shocked was joking and is actually a supporter of gay marriage; should I be surprised to see posts by folks on the Right who likewise don't get it?

First, Two and a Half Men's Angus T. Jones reveals he thinks his show's scripts are tripe and the show actually lowers the lowest common denominator; now Michelle Shocked leaps off the butch rockette express, tries to snark about it during a show on the leftmost point of the Left Coast and gets mangled in the media machine she helped to build.
Life is good.
