A report from the Middle East Forum.
Countries from Italy to Sweden are debating the right of women to wear the niqab. Canada is the latest country to enter the fray, with the Muslim Canadian Congress desiring to ban it. Is such a ban possible in the U.S., where its prevalence is evident in certain urban centers, like Philadelphia?
Muslim women’s wearing of niqab, the veil covering everything but the eyes, and, by extension, the face-concealing mesh that is combined with a long garment to form the burqa in South Asia, has been introduced into the West as a purported religious obligation, and therefore, is put forward by ideological Islamists as a prospective civil right.
Niqab has become a matter of controversy in almost every Western country, most recently when the French government opened an inquiry into its prohibition – with the support, perhaps counter-intuitive, of that country’s leading Muslim figure, Dr. Dalil Boubakeur, rector of the Grand Mosque of Paris. France had already banned all forms of religious dress and symbolism from its state schools. In 2008, Dutch State Secretary for Education Ronald Plasterk, representing the immigrant-friendly Labor Party, called for banning niqab, as well as the burqa and abaya, from the country’s primary and secondary schools, both for pupils and for visiting mothers. The burqa, with its niqab-like eyescreen, is barred from British and some Belgian public schools. Earlier controversies include Quebec’s 2007 decision that women must remove niqab if they vote, and a demand in 2006 by British Labour politician Jack Straw that women take off niqab before visiting his constituency office.
The U.S. has seen a number of bizarre attempts to establish niqab as a right. In 2001, Sultaana Freeman obtained a Florida driver’s license while wearing niqab, but the license was then canceled.
Niqab is not the same as other practices often referred to generally as “veils” or “veiling”:
• hijab, or head-covering,
• the abaya, a loose full-body covering imposed on women in Saudi Arabia , although it is required in that kingdom than it be supplemented by niqab,
• the chador, an Iranian cloak,
• or jilbab, a loose garment covering the body except for the head, face, and hands.
Distinctions between these and various Western styles for women are difficult to make, especially in a civil-liberties environment. Head scarves and long coats or cloaks are worn by many women in cultures around the world, non-Muslim as well as Muslim. But since a hijab or head-covering may resemble a hat, it may be prohibited for all women in certain settings. Also in 2007, a Georgia judge barred a Muslim woman from entering court unless she removed her hijab, just as men and women are required to take off hats and caps when a judge is present. The radical Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) unsuccessfully challenged the judge’s decision on the false claim of religious freedom. But religious claims do not override judicial practice, at least in the U.S., any more than they would justify carrying a driver’s license that conceals the bearer’s identity.
Niqab as a security problem encourages non-Muslim suspicion of Muslims, since it encourages Muslims toward separatism from their non-Muslim neighbors. And the security issue is real. Male terrorists in such varied countries as Pakistan, Britain, Afghanistan, and Israel have donned female coverings in attempting to escape police. Ordinary criminals have put on niqab as a disguise while committing robberies in the U.S., Britain, Canada, India, and Bosnia-Hercegovina.
Niqab is not Islamic. Covering of the face by women is nowhere mentioned in Qur’an, and the opinions of Islamic legal scholars on it are not unanimous. The Hanafi school of Islamic law, which is most widespread among Muslims, specifically rules out face covering, on the basis of women’s needs while dealing normally with men, in commerce and elsewhere. In traditional Islam, men are called on to act modestly, and women are not ordered to disfigure and subordinate themselves by masking their features. The Prophet Muhammad is reported to have said that women making the hajj pilgrimage to Mecca should not cover their faces or wear gloves, although in their typically perverse manner, Saudi Wahhabi clerics now seek to impose it upon them even then.
Millions of Muslim women around the world do not wear so-called Islamic dress, but have retained local customary garments, which do not distort their form or personality. Many have adopted the same fashions as Western or Far-Eastern women. Women in Hejaz, the Western Arabian region in which the holy cities of Mecca and Medina are located, did not, in the past, cover their faces, and increasingly protest against the imposition of this practice.
The radicals who promote niqab try to pretend that a woman becomes a “better Muslim” by covering her face. This concept is no more Islamic than niqab itself. In traditional Islam, division of Muslims between the good and the bad, aside from those who have committed terrorist or criminal acts, will be decided by God, not by men or women.
According to established Islamic guidance, Muslims who migrate to non-Muslim societies are required to accept and obey the laws and customs of the countries to which they move. Attempts to introduce niqab into Western countries represent an obvious violation of this principle.

If we banned this population from Western society we would not have to deal with the problem. There was a time in the history of the USA when immigration policy was rational. No persons were allowed to enter if they posed a THREAT or a DISRUPTION TO OUR HARMONY AND SECURITY. It appears those are NOW the qualifications for admission. Why? To further push the multi-culti agenda of a World Government/Nations without Borders/Global Village? Look at what was done to Great Britian. That is our fate. When anyone brings this up they are told they are xenophobic/nationalistic. Another name calling cacaphony to silence opposition. So call me names. Yes. I am a nationalist. Until recently in the history of America that was a traditional position. To love your country and its people above all others. Like normal people do with their family. Those who are responsible for the import of troublesome populations who do not fit, who will seek to turn our culture and laws to their advantage while destroying mine, who insist on simply relocating their culture and customs to our soil without honoring what existed and what was preferred before they arrived, and who wish to conform our laws to their ways of life do not belong here. If they wanted to live as they do, they should stay where they are. No. They want to take everything we have and bend us to their will. Bureaucrats wonder why more and more Americans are fed up with the foreign hordes invading our shores and think they can still call everyone names to keep us in line. What is there to wonder about? Those whom we elected to represent US care more about those newly arrived than those who have been here for generations. In their pandering they have signalled to the native born they are second class citizens and must take second place to the invaders. And then they wonder why we are screaming HALT! They have made it impossible to do otherwise.

Bravo, scythe! It takes only a few words to negate the volumes of idiotic PC blather that has been dragging down the American culture for the last few decades.

Sure. Ship all Muslims back to the Middle East.
Wouldn't have stopped Major Hasan. He was born here.
Same as John Muhammad and his buddy Malvo, the DC snipers.
And untold numbers of radicalized Muslim converts of all races in US prisons who eagerly embrace jihad against an enemy they hated *before* they were incarcerated.
Terrorist murderers, like rapists and bank robbers, don't wear signs around their necks.
And they don't always fit the Muslim stereotype.
Even Israelis manage to coexist with a Muslim population in their own country.
Israel focuses on individual terrorist behavior and personality cues using their outstanding security and intelligence assets.
They don't feel the need to displace millions to prevent the few from attacking.

Hi Guys,
I simply must contribute a humorous note here.
While living in Saudi Arabia, a good Saudi friend told me that "kidnapping beautiful wives" was the national sport.
Every month or so a western woman got kidnapped, never to be heard from again...even until today.
My Saudi friend told me he wanted his beautiful wife to be safe...heh. See, under the veil, she might be ugly as sin itself. heh.

MOGADISHU, Somalia — A male homicide bomber dressed as a woman attacked a university graduation ceremony Thursday, killing at least 15 people, including three Cabinet ministers and three journalists.
A suicide bomber can hide a lot of explosives under all those concealing garments!

From my perspective of living with mooooslims for 40 years here in Dearbornistan, Michigan:
It's all about the immigration. Import people who are by and large, unsuited to become Westerners/Americans, and you have the ever-increasing march of fundamentalist Sharia Law being pushed 24/6 by said immigrants. Too late to complain now - they are here. That's why we have beheadings, honor killings and jihad in general (see Fort Hood for the latest in numerous jihad attacks over recent years).
It's the immigration, stoopid!
L. Ross| 12.3.09 @ 4:06PM
I'm not quite sure what the problem is for our nation with regard to islam. I'm no judge, but islam seeks to supplant every form of government in the world with sharia law. To a simple man like me, it seems that islam is not protected by the constitution, because islam seeks to replace the consitituion. Muslims worldwide will be happy to explain it all to you. They aren't ashamed of their societies or their cultures. It seems that only the West is ashamed of their societies and cultures, and doing their damnedest to see that they fail.

Well guys,
I do have to say it again. I do know some really splendid people who are muslims.....they are just crappy muslims. heh.
The fact remains, in an "open free" society we are going to have a percentage of crazies running around loose. Governors like Huckabee do agravate the situation...duh!

If I wore the niqab, how would this be any different from having to accommodate any of the other non-conformist Americans out there? Scared of what it "represents" (to you), when you have no idea of how normal and friendly the person can be under it. We all have stereotypes we have to get over. It's no big deal. I have similar values to my uber-Christian neighbors, little do they know. I have more in common with them than any other non-conformist, or conformist American.

Well Aischa, for starters, Islam has over one billions adherents. Islam is not only a religion but a political ideology (and one hostile to the West). Moooslims openly preach they want to over-take the US Constitution and over-take Western nations.
Quakers or Mormons do not have these qualities. Moooslims are enemies of the USA and the West. They do not belong here. Period.

Moslems=enemies, foreign AND domestic. Support the country which took you in or get OUT. There are enough whining Moslems here. Have read the Koran and the many references commanding the faithful to kill and behead belie the name "Religion of Peace."
George| 12.3.09 @ 9:02PM
Hey Aischa my grandparents both came to this country not to change it but to become American. Not to be identified as African, German, Catholic, or any other ethinic background but to become an American. Not to bring their culture or language or clothing or traditions but to become Americans. They learned how to speak and write by reading the Chicago News papers with a friend who spoke and wrote English. The one thing that they wanted to be identified with was America, not their relegion not they clothing. They had left their country for America. If you want to wear your clothing to identify yourself as someone other than an American knock yourself out, but do it in your own country, the one that beheads our citizens and kills women and children for Allah. Go back and wear what you must, just go back!

Thank you, George!
My parents came here by way of Canada from war torn Europe escaping prison and labor camps.
They became Canadian citizens, but still wanted to come to America.
Til the day he died, my father never regretted coming here and becoming an American.
These people don't come to be Americans and be assimillated, but live seperate and apart from us.
Aischa| 12.3.09 @ 10:27PM
FYI I am American by birth, to Anglo parents. I chose Islam. 8 yrs, and I have never heard any religious lectures on taking over America. Part of being American is being free to be who you are right?
I don't think Islam is hostile to the west.
Muslims are not enemies, not that I'd feel all that comfortable with you guys--pretty hostile, but I am not your enemy.
Aischa| 12.3.09 @ 10:59PM
Whining Stinks! We don't need to apologize, for who we are or where we are. However, I think we need to step into each other's shoes once in awhile--god knows how, and respect each's differences.
A niqab, means what...? It's a piece of cloth one chooses to wear to be closer to god, or fulfill an obligation (whether it is obligatory or not). It doesn't mean terrorist. It doesn't mean we hate Americans, or anybody in particular. It doesn't mean we are anti-social.
I realize the niqab may be hard to understand for some people, but get a grip. We can still interact, and conduct ourselves courteously. It is not a threat to anybody or anything. It may be a declaration of a deeper level of faith, but not of hatred.
I don't get you guys who say go back home...
Jim | 12.4.09 @ 12:57AM
With the left wanting to do away with Christian and Jewish holiday decorations, symbols and songs in schools and as I recall in some instances kids not being allowed to wear Christian inscribed clothing, how is a muslim child allowed to attend schools in one of these costumes?

You Moslems don't get it, do you? Your "Religion of Peace" openly engages, worldwide, in murders, videoed beheadings, and open bragging about conducting mass murder and doing so to create an Islamic "Paradise" on Earth. When you guys find disagreement or anything which "offends", the first things are threats and violence. Your "Religion" has been at war with the world and each other since it's inception, Sunni live to kill Shia and vice versa, as an example. And you WONDER why you have a bad name?
Richard Baker| 12.4.09 @ 8:11AM
A clarification. As an American, I don't care how you choose to worship God. If you do so, then Peace be with you. However, I've read the Koran and the numerous exhortations to the faithful to rise up and slay are in there. Moslem hostility to all is derived from the words in the Koran. That is the prime source of my concern. Your public persona/face is the source of your problems, at minimum. Wish it weren't so but alas.
UpChuck.Liberals| 12.4.09 @ 10:54AM
I would suggest that Aischa take a year to read the Bible. Once you get past the rather violent and law ridden Old Testament you get to the meat of the matter. God's grace is freely given to those who simply believe in Jesus the Christ. No praying to some place. No rituals (those are man made) just the believe that Christ died for us.

There is a well-organised, fully politicised & well funded campaign to terrorise the Muslim community, in the Europe & the U S / U K, by the Ultra-right / Fascist / born-again Christians, under the false illusion that the Muslims will either run away to other countries OR forget about the Islamic Values. Insha Allah, none of this is going to happen as Allah is THE BEST PLANNER.
They want to ban the Minarets from the Mosques
as scores of Christians are getting attracted to Islam, either through the Islamic Architecture, or hearing the AZAN(The Call of Prayer) or by simply looking at the Arabic Script.
ISLAMPHOBIA is being spread in the Europe & America, by the ultra right Christians basically
TO STOP FURTHER CONVERSION OF THE CHRISTIANS TO ISLAM, as the Muslims have such a healthy lifestyle Alhamdulliah.
- They get Married, instead of having a controversial LIVE-IN RELATIONSHIP and care for their spouse for the rest of their life.
- Muslims refrain from alcohol and other sins
which have become a way of life for most European & American People.
- There is a very very negligible percentage of divorce in Muslim Society, which encourages
the children to grow up in a healthy atmosphere
Finally, I was pleasantly surprised to know that the WORLD TRADE CENTER, was NOT attacked
by the Muslims, but was very well planned by
people Close to the former American administration . The international Engineers Association has ruled out the damage to the WTC by the aircrafts which hit them, and there were no Arab DNA found on any of the dead bodies recovered from the Aircrafts
So you guys can decide, what a bloody conspiracy is going on against the Muslims.
Insha Allah, Muslims will come out of this difficult situation with More dignity & Honor and Respect of the World Community.
Leo| 12.5.09 @ 12:45PM
Mirza,
The best response to your emotional, and I dare say, illogical piece comes from thousands of former Muslims. The son of the leader of Hamas is now a Christian. He lives in California. Check the Web sites of groups like Former Muslims United, Muslims for Christ, etc.
Believe it or not, millions of Muslims are leaving Islam every year. While some Westerners convert to Islam, many renounce the religion soon thereafter. The lasting conversions seems to take place in American and British prisons...I wonder why.
Richard Baker| 12.5.09 @ 10:26AM
Mirza:
Don't you understand that we don't care about your moonbat and murder cult religion? If you want to live among yourselves with this insanity, then go for it. If an Islamic country is so wonderful then why are so many of you coming to the West? Answer: you clowns think that you're going to overthrow the world by immigration. Godly "Religion of Peace?" I've read the Koran and educated myself about Islam and you're telling me that God condones and encourages beheadings, ritual female genital mutilation, and "honor" killings? You guys engage in a murder cult the same as the Thuggees in 1830s India. At least the Thuggees were open about their goals and aims. All your God "words" are belied by your murderous actions. If you live in the US, please allow me to pay for a First-Class airfare for you to one of your "glorious" Moslem countries. The only proviso is that you have to STAY. Let me know.
Richard Baker| 12.5.09 @ 11:48AM
Mirza:
By the way, what happens when you put heat of 2000+ degrees Fahrenheit and human flesh in close proximity? Repeating the same old DNA nonsense ignores the fact that there was very little remaining of any of the passengers and crew aboard those two aircraft which struck the World Trade Center. Quick now. What was your first true reaction when you heard and saw the event and heard that it was done by Moslems? Tell the truth now, if you can.
Leo| 12.5.09 @ 12:26PM
Aischa,
Actually the Niqab or veil is not of Islamic origin. It is a modern political symbol. A female Turkish historian who specialized in Sumerian history, language and culture, Muazzez Ilmiye Cig, has found ancient writings to the effect that those veils were the symbol of pagan temple prostitutes "the headscarf was first used about 5,000 years ago by Sumerian priestesses initiating young men into sex. They wore the veil to distinguish themselves from other priestesses in the temple..." Turkish fundamentalists sued the 92 year-old scholar for inciting religious hatred in a scholarly paper on the subject. A Turkish court dismissed the case (See http://www.setimes.com/cocoon/.....feature-01).
Before you embrace a political symbol, do so knowingly. Just a word from a friendly naturalized American professor who deals with naive American students every day!

I simply do not understand the issue as it is totally biased and totally against the Geneva Convention. We had it then, we have it now. What exactly is UN, World Trade Organisation, IMF, etc? Nothing but the puppets of the USA. France starts the Niqab as 1979 Iran revolution comes into the dream of Sarkozy. Let us look out of box. The global warming failed. Obama comes on the last day, tells us the same old story (No Kyoto please) and China does not want to do much as the smoke created takes China further up the ladder in the economy. The Hijab and Niqab are nothing but the pseudo laws created against the Islamist laws. Why UK has anything against this? Rumsfeld had the new Europe and the old Europe. Let us look at the same Issus but in the different way. Read the following and what do you read, think, lose, gain, then you will know exactly what USA is
DEPARTMENT of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood came to the rescue of beleaguered air travelers Monday by placing a three-hour limit on how long they can be forced to sit on grounded planes before they must be returned to the terminal. But don't expect immediate relief over the busy Christmas-New Year's travel axis. The new rule doesn't kick in for another 120 days.
Exceptions to the rule would be granted if there are safety or security concerns, or if air traffic controllers tell the pilot that returning to the terminal would disrupt airport operations. Within two hours, airlines have to provide their passengers with adequate food and water. They also have to ensure that the bathrooms remain operable and provide medical care, if necessary. In addition to the tarmac rules, DOT are blocking air carriers from scheduling chronically delayed flights.
Each violation of the three-hour rule would result in a $27,500 fine per passenger. That's more satisfying than the total $175,000 fine meted out last month to Continental Airlines, ExpressJet and Mesaba Airlines for their roles in trapping 47 passengers on the tarmac in Rochester, Minn., last summer for six hours. But that action was significant because it was the first time the federal government had gone after airlines for such an offense. It accused the three carriers of deceptive trade practices and misleading customers by violating their customer service agreements. Who pay for this? The elite or the ordinary taxpayers like you and I and we are still talking of Niqab exactly as above.
I thank you.

Once this happens, talk to Athena and she will tell you that Hercules will help you. You’ll need to have the magic mirror from Aphrodite because Hercules doesn’t want to have to walk. He’s so lazy!
Getting the Hydra Scale
You can see how to do this in the videos, but basically you need to jump up when the Hydra is about to strike. Poptropica He will rear one of his heads back to attack and his eyes will bulge out. When this happens, jump up in the air and then try to land on top of his head. That head will get knocked out. There is no such thing as islamophobia. Phobia means illogical fear, it is logical to fear islam. It is islamosensible or islamological to dislike islam which is theocracy which it is a means of governing the masses through imposition of religious law by use of the sword if necessary. Islam is a totalitarianistic system of intolerant religious governing. It has little to do with faith and enlightment and much to do with imposing the will of the religious bigots upon the masses.

All forms of canvas prisons should be banned. If a woman is fearful appearing openingly in a free society, then she needs counseling and sensitivity training so she can live sanely without the restriction imposed by the canvas prison. To willingly wear something like this is a form of mental illness. Which also is religious zealotry.

" the abaya, a loose full-body covering imposed on women in Saudi Arabia ," No the abayya is not impose on the Saudi women or any woman for that matter. If you know your religion, imposition is not part of Islam. In Islam is no compulsion in religion. Saying that, remember Culture is not the same as Religion. Mixing both creates a miss understanding of both. Because we will not know when one starts and the other ends.
