Late Saturday night, House Democrats celebrated the “historic”
passage of national health care, but the victory was only made
possible by forcing their liberal members to swallow a bitter
pill.
To pass the 1,990-page health care legislation by a narrow 220 to
215 margin, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi caved into pro-life
Democrats to allow an amendment that would prohibit taxpayer
funding for abortions. But to pro-choice liberals, the provision
represents massive encroachment on women’s freedom.
“The assault on women’s reproductive rights continues with a
vengeance,” Ellen R. Malcolm, president of the pro-choice group
Emily’s List,
commented. She warned that, “women would be denied coverage
available today in private health plans.”
Abortion provider Planned Parenthood
branded the amendment “an unacceptable addition to the health
care reform bill that, if enacted, would result in women losing
health benefits they have today.”
Ironically, the need for the controversial measure is a direct
consequence of liberal efforts to have the government take over
the health care system. The amendment, proposed by Reps. Bart
Stupak (D-MI) and Joe Pitts (R-PA), would merely extend
protections under current law that prevent taxpayer funding for
abortion through government health care programs such as
Medicaid. The only reason the Stupak-Pitts amendment would apply
restrictions to the private market is that the government would
be drastically expanding its role in the private market as a
result of the health care legislation.
Currently, women are able to purchase private health care plans
that cover abortion because it remains a legal procedure and we
still have a private market for the sale of health insurance. But
if the House Democratic health care bill becomes law, individuals
will only be allowed to purchase health insurance through a
government-run exchange. And because millions of Americans will
be using government subsidies to purchase insurance through the
exchange, suddenly lawmakers get to have a say on what kind of
private insurance policies individuals can purchase. In addition,
the federal government would be directly operating one of the
plans, known as the “public option.”
The Stupak-Pitts amendment, which passed Saturday night with the
support of 64 Democrats, would prevent women from using federal
subsidies in the new government exchange to purchase health
insurance that covers abortion. It also makes sure the new
government-run plan does not offer abortion coverage.
But in blasting the amendment during the House floor debate,
pro-choice Democrats had no sense of irony in the arguments they
were making against government command and control.
“This amendment…attempts to dictate to women how to spend their
own money,” declared Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA). “It’s simply
outrageous.”
Yet the House bill Lee voted for within hours of making her
remarks dictates that any individual must spend his or her own
money to purchase a health insurance policy that is deemed
acceptable by the government — even if the cost far exceeds his
or her annual health care expenditures — or pay a tax under the
threat of imprisonment.
“This amendment adds a new discriminatory measure against women,”
Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) insisted. “Under this proposal, if a woman
is of low or moderate income and receives tax credits to help her
afford the premiums for a health insurance plan she purchases on
the exchange, she can’t choose a plan that covers abortion
services. And even if she chooses the public option, she cannot
receive abortion coverage at all, even if she receives no money
of any kind and pays for the plan entirely herself.”
And Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) fumed that “It attempts an unprecedented
overreach into women’s basic rights and freedoms in this
country.”
Yet both Nadler and DeLaura also voted for the main health care
bill. In it, not only would individuals be prevented from
purchasing insurance outside of a government-run exchange (under
a section titled “Limitations on individual health insurance
coverage”), but all of the plans offered on the exchange would be
designed by a presidentially-appointed “Health Choices
Commissioner.” The Commissioner, according to the bill, “shall
specify the benefits to be made available under
Exchange-participating health benefits plans during each plan
year, consistent with subtitle C of title II and this section.”
Each insurer would be required to offer a “basic” plan as defined
by the Commissioner, and then could offer an “enhanced” plan, a
“premium plan” and a “premium plus” plan.
And though Democrats insist that the government-run plan, or
“public option,” would only be financed by the premiums it
collects from beneficiaries, the House bill designates $2 billion
in taxpayer money to finance start-up costs. In addition, the
plan would be overseen by the Secretary of Health and Human
Services, who is a federal government employee whose salary is
paid by taxpayers.
DeLauro asserted that “we should not be injecting this divisive
and polarizing issue into our debate.” Yet the politicizing of
medical issues is a natural consequence of putting government
bureaucrats and lawmakers in control of the health care system.
If pro-choice Democrats are sincerely concerned about avoiding
government restrictions on abortion coverage in private insurance
policies, there’s a very simple solution: don’t support a
government takeover of the health care system.

I suppose that anybody planning, for the long term, to have an abortion could start saving money towards the inevitable rather than buying special expensive insurance. Or, they could take responsibility for sexuality and realize that babies are the most reasonable consequence. Birth control is handy. Really folks, I'm "pro-choice" but I'll never have to have an abortion, I kept my son(even under the awful circumstances). Of course not everyone wants a baby.
KyMouse| 11.10.09 @ 10:49AM
An estimated 2 million American couples would love to adopt "unwanted" babies, if only the mothers would let their babies live. I believe that every child deserves the chance to find a loving home, don't you?
I'm glad that you still have your son. Since 1973, more than 51 million American babies haven't been as blessed.
Language is important when discussing abortion. I don't say that a mother "has an abortion," I say that she "aborted her baby." Abortion isn't something that one has -- it is something that is done (fatally) to a baby.
Birth control isn't perfect, even when used exactly correctly (which often isn't the case). And many forms of contraception have side effects such as high blood pressure and blood clots. Abstinence is the only sure way to avoid pregnancy. (Okay, the removal of certain organs will, too.)
Torquemeda| 11.9.09 @ 6:28AM
Phil: Don't worry - no anti-abortion clause will survive if this bill is passed. The argument will be that it 'discriminates' against the 'poor' because the 'rich' will be able to afford private care. Thus, ex-seminarian Cao and the Council of Catholic Bishops will have collaborated in passing the legislation that provides for universal coverage for abortion - all the while proclaiming they are pro-life. Sort of like Notre Dame providing legitimacy and a public platform for a President who voted against attempting to save survivors of attempted abortions.

Amazing that liberals can so readily treat an unborn person as "property" while at the same time say slavery was wrong because people were treated like "property." Since 1973, over 50 million babies have been labeled "property" and killed. If you do the math, the death total from abortion alone is more than having 9/11 happen every single day for over 35 years.

I recently discovered that I do have a libertarian streak in me--among others. Yes, if you want the government to be involved--to dictate --that in government run health care abortion coverageis mandatory--you--supposedly one who believes in civil liberties--are opening yourself up to many governmental controls. These controls are ones that pro-abortion supporters would not like. I live in a middle to upper middle calss neighborhood in the North East--and I can tell you that when they get socked with governmental restrictions on their medical care they will howllllllllllllllllll --you will hear it accross the fruited plaines. Controls like going to medical centers not your favorite doctors office for example.

During that same period approximately 700,000 fetuses and future citizens have been aborted during 2009 based on historical archives and trends. Both situations will be covered, along with illegal aliens, in the new health care bill proposed by the House after it gets through conference.

Welfare slavery will be extended to the middle classes and beyond. That's what the democratic party has promoted for 70 years. Someone said here unborn children are treated like "property"... and disposed as such through abortions. For the most part the Democratic Party stands for "reproductive rights" which is an euphemism for "butchering babies rights", and it's quite fitting to see how they treat humans as property or objects as they did in the XIX century. They know very well how to enslave people and how to "manage" the masses. The Party of Slavery is the Democratic Party. The democratic party order the assassination of Lincoln so that their democratic vice-president will raise to power and stop the gains of liberty and freedom of blacks in the south. I agree with Eric Holder that America is a country of cowards. For 100 hundred years the Democratic Party segregated blacks, they have promoted murder and destitution and yet our society has done nothing to stop the Party of Slavery and Murder. We are all cowards for letting something akin to the Nazi party to survive in politics for so long.

It just goes to show us how the far Left cares so little about the long-term viability of this country, rather, they every bit focused on short-term political gain while they have the "numbers" to jam this down our throats. To the masses, let them eat cake.

Well the argument here seems to be why not put the Federal Government in charge of health care since they've done such a "sterling" job of running their other national programs. Let's see they've got Social Security which is going broke,it's currently a dollar in,a dollar out,and the baby boomer generation is just starting to retire. There's welfare, disability, medicare, medicaid which all continue to increase in cost adding hourly to our national debt, and then there's one of my favorites, public education. The USA currently spends about double the cost per student of any other country in the world, but is placing far behind many countries in the sciences and mathmatics. And the Government certainly did a fine job of helping the housing industry through their surrogate mortgage companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. So it makes perfect sense to give Nancy Pelosi,Barney Frank and company control of the health care industry, so they can straiten that industry out just like they have all the others !!!

This imbicile obviously knows nothing about INSURANCE, since an INSURED does not spend 'their own money' when using insurance, but rather the insurance company's money [“This amendment…attempts to dictate to women how to spend their own money,” declared Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA). “It’s simply outrageous.” ]. The insured pays a co-pay [which is 'their own money'] but the insurance company pays the rest/balance. Therefore, the insured is NOT spending their own money but is spending the insurance company's money. Specifically in the case of this healthcare legislation, the 'TAXPAYER' is paying for the health insurance, certainly not the insured!!!!!

The questions that really need to be asked (after viewing Senator Gregg's statement), is why the GOP politicians in DC, and the GOP "leadership", were not raising hell over both the actual cost, and much more improtantly, consitutionality of the government takeover of this sector of the economy and our lives.
Instead we get weak and disjointed strategic planning to raise the awarness of what this bill is really all about.
Instead of effective opposition they give us stunts with babies...
Senator Gregg: Updated CBO Estimate of House Bill Pulls Back the Curtain on Majority’s Intent to Grow Government by $3 Trillion
Senator Judd Gregg (R-NH), ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee today commented on the Congressional Budget Office’s (CBO) more detailed cost estimate of the manager’s amendment to the House health reform bill.
Senator Gregg stated, “The CBO estimate released last night finally sheds light on the smoke and mirrors game the majority has been playing with the cost of their health care reform proposal. Over the first 10 years, this legislation builds in gross new spending of $1.7 trillion – and most of the new spending doesn’t even start until 2014. Once that spending is fully phased in, the House Democratic bill rings up at more than $3 trillion over ten years.
“Additionally, this bill cuts critical Medicare and Medicaid funding by $628 billion, accounts for nearly $1.2 trillion in tax and fee increases and will explode the scope of government by putting the nation’s health care system in the hands of Washington bureaucrats. The $3 trillion price tag defies common sense – we simply cannot add all this new spending to the government rolls and claim to control the deficit.
“If we continue to pile more and more debt on the next generation, they will never be able to get out from under it. The health care system needs reform, but this massive expansion of government, financed by our children and grandchildren, is the wrong way to proceed."
I strongly encourage Michael Steele to start reading The American Spectator and reader comments/analysis after he cleans the the dung off of his glasses.
He could pick up on what the real issues are and how to proceed with a more effective strategy against the totalitarian takeover that is going on in the country.
The Republican party has got to get serious and stop playing games.
The future of the country is at stake.
We want to help you Michael, but you have to make some effort to help yourself and listen to what your constituency is telling you.
To clarify, your constituency is all tax paying citizens of this country who have vested interest in the future health of our economy and the safety of all Americans.
That's a pretty big group. It's time to start pandering to them now or the party will continue it's slow death as an ineffective opposition party.
Perhaps the best resources for an effective strategy going forward are not running around DC looking for photo ops and press conference exposure.
Just a couple of thoughts.

There is the general question, whether Congress has the authority under the Constitution to require us to buy medical insurance, and I think a narrower question, whether Congress has the authority to make us pay the premiums when a portion of the money will be used to kill babies.
A tax that applies to anyone who is uninsured is a very narrow penalty aimed at a personal choice, and such a tax exceeds Congress's authority. If this were not the case, Congress could "tax" anyone who fails to follow an order of any kind, for example, if you fail to exercise regularly and keep documentation, fail to take a certain medicine which the government decides is "essential", or if you don't have a vegetarian diet. What's next, federal agents coming to my home to inspect the contents of my refrigerator? How about a special punitive tax on individuals who fail to sing the praises of Obama? A tax on sodomy? The possibilities are limitless invasions of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

The cynic in me says, "Yeah, okay, let's allow abortions in ObamaCare if it passes."
Here's why: with our tax dollars, we'll literally be financing Blue America's mad dash to abort itself out of existence. And Blue America, in turn, will be financing Red America's having lots and lots and lots of healthy children.
Do the math: if liberals don't have babies and conservatives do, then guess who's going to inherit the earth in the next 20 years?

Ms. Robinson, it's easy to be "pro-choice" when you aren't the one being aborted.
Since 1973 alone, more than 51 million innocent, helpless babies have been killed by abortion; and the mothers of many of them have suffered injuries, heartbreak and even death. Please Google "Synthia Dennard" and "Lou Ann Herron" to read about two mothers who died at the hands of "safe, legal" abortionists. Synthia's abortionist severed an artery and tried to prevent paramedics from helping her. Lou Ann's abortionist punctured her uterus and didn't want to stop his lunch to help her, when she began bleeding profusely.
Did you know that an estimated 6 out of every 10 abortions aren't the mother's choice at all, but rather the choice of the baby's father, the mother's parents, or well-meaning friends who put pressure on her? Did you know that murder is one of the leading causes, and sometimes THE leading cause, of death for pregnant mothers?
And did you know that abortion is by far the leading cause of death for African-Americans? More than 14 million African-American babies have been killed by abortion since 1973, depriving the black community of teachers, scientists, leaders, and so on. Planned Parenthood deliberately places most its abortuaries in or near minority neighborhoods, in keeping with founder Margaret Sanger's racist views (Google "Margaret Sanger's Negro Project").
Please take a little time to visit a crisis-pregnancy center in your area; talk with the women who work there and find out why they became involved. I hope you'll find yourself wanting to do your part to protect the most vulnerable members of our society.
