It’s Beginning Again
When Barack Obama promises the Muslims a new beginning, Israel has a pretty good idea who is going to bear the brunt.
This is a chilling, ominous moment for the people of Israel, yet one best captured by an old Jewish jest. A rabbi was leaving his synagogue after several years of service and at the good-bye party he was accosted by an elderly woman. “Rabbi, we hate to see you go.”
“Oh,” murmured the cleric humbly. “I am sure my replacement will be just as good.”
“Nah,” snapped the old-timer. “There have been four rabbis over my years here, and each one was worse than the one before.”
When Barack Obama promises the Muslims a new beginning, Israel has a pretty good idea who is going to bear the brunt. Not that the scenario laid out in the body of Obama’s speech is adversarial to Israel intrinsically. If all its prescriptions were carried out, we would have Hamas renouncing violence (inspired by Martin Luther King), Palestinian schoolchildren will no longer be taught to hate (inspired by Reverend Wright?), and a sleepy suburban middle-class Palestine would share the landscaping bill with its Jewish neighbor. Israel would have to give up some stuff, but nothing it has not agreed to in the past.
The problem is not with this visage, this stained-glass window into utopia. This image has been around for years. Israel signed up for this in Oslo a full sixteen years ago, later reinforcing this commitment in the Wye Accords signed by Prime Minister Netanyahu himself. On top of that Israel spontaneously withdrew from Gaza four years ago, hardly the mark of grasping power-mongers.
The problem is that this window has already been shattered by Palestinians who continue to foment hatred. Their textbooks, their entertainments, even kiddie cartoons, are saturated with vitriol against Israel. From the Gaza side they began shooting rockets as soon as they took control of the territory. Then they voted Hamas in and stood by a few months later when the Fatah members were killed or exiled to the West Bank. They kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit and continue to hold him hostage. The rocketry Hamas fires is supplied by Iran, which backs it up with rhetoric promising to wipe Israel off the map.
Israelis have been involved in this process long enough to know that each “new beginning” is worse than its predecessor. The Palestinians are never asked to make the first move. Instead Israel is prodded to offer ever more gestures of good faith. They have already relinquished two huge territories while the Palestinians have done nothing in return, but the onus always falls on them to prove sincerity.
Look at the quotes from Arab leaders after the Obama speech. Not a single one refers to the concessions demanded from Palestinians or Iran, but rather to the critique of Israel. They are about evenly divided if it was strong enough or whether he should have expanded on the extent of Israeli misbehavior. This mirrors the response during the speech itself. The chastisement is greeted by silence but the slapdown of Israel gets huge ovations.
Incidentally, none of what Obama expressed is new. It has been the refrain of European nations for some time. What it indicates is America coming to echo Europe, an outcome much desired by liberals in the United States from Hollywood to the Supreme Court. It has also been standard fare in American universities for many decades. Elect a college professor to the Presidency and you know what to expect.
Benjamin Netanyahu probably has no choice but to make positive noises. But if you got to be a fly on the wall behind closed doors, you can be sure that the sound waves will curl your dainty wings. Some of the lesser Israeli dignitaries are not afraid to speak their mind in public. Knesset member Dr. Michael Ben-ari said, “We survived Pharaoh. We will survive this.” One of the settlers averred: “More Hussein than Barack.” These are some very unhappy folks.
Probably the best answer is to say Israel is willing, but only after Palestinians live up to the deals already signed, none of which they are keeping. Which leads us to another classic gag. After a magician performs, a man from the audience asks him how the tricks are done. “I can tell you,” the trickster cracks, “but then I would have to kill you.”
“Fine,” the man answers. “Then tell my wife instead.”

The Mideast conflict is intractable.
One side desires the total and complete extermination of the other, and is supported - politically and financially by governments that encourage this strategy to deflect criticism of their own corrupt, totalitarian regimes.
The other side does not like this option, and even if Israell withdrew to the 1967 borders, the PLO/Hamas/Arab States would declare this a partial victory and a major step in extinguishing Israel.
This conflict will end when one (or several) of the belligerants are totally and completely wiped out militarily.
The Arabs/PLO/Hamas/Iran do not want nor seek peace nor will ever accept the existence of Israel. The Israelis have no intention of packing up and totally leaving the Middle East.
There is no room for compromise or common goal. Their respective goals are diametrically opposed.
There is nothing the USA, the EU, the UN , or even the Messiah, Obama, can do about this.

David, I do not understand how one on the Left can hate a country so much despite sharing your values, whereas its enemies, who you sympathize with, are against all you stand for. In the Muslim world and in Palestine homosexuality is a crime punishable by prison or death - In Israel there are no laws limiting gays. In Palestine and the Muslim world women have fewer rights than men. In Israel, the sexes are equal. In the Muslim world freedom of speech and press is curtailed, in Israel the press is free and criticism of the government is common. In the Arab world, Blacks are treated with disdain, in Israel, they have citizenship. Israel has universal healthcare, the Arab world has healthcare for its elites only. So David, are you really a Liberal? Seems like you hate Conservatives but you love Reactionaries!

Like the studied indignation of the Left, the grandiose international apology is selective. Professor Obama apologies only to the world's thugs and miscreants. Therefore, he will never apologize to Israel--nor, for that matter, to the America he transparently despises.
Newt Gingrich recently apologized for speaking the truth about Sonia Sotomayor. We conservatives are much better than the liberals at apologizing--but apparently no less weird.

I have been to Israel. The situation is complex. Most Arabs do not accept Israel period. So all of the simple solutions, i.e. apologies, money, land will not bring peace. That is not to say the Israelis should give up land, and allow a "Palestinian" state. They should do it with their eyes open knowing it will not bring peace. The only peace for most Arabs are Jews driven into the sea. Only naive liberals believe otherwise.

The Military Commissions Act is the governments further enactment of U.S. Concentration Camps that parallel Hitler's and Stalin's camps, except these camps are for U.S. citizens.
The bill allows U.S. citizens to be targeted as terrorists, kidnapped and stripped of all legal rights guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution. Top legal scholars have expressed their shock at the scope of the so-called "compromise" legislation. To top it off, the media touted it as a 'defeat' for Bush. How Orwellian..
Yale Law Professor Bruce Ackerman states in the L.A. Times, "The compromise legislation .... authorizes the president to seize American citizens as enemy combatants, even if they have never left the United States. And once thrown into military prison, they cannot expect a trial by their peers or any other of the normal protections of the Bill of Rights."
Similarly, law Professor Marty Lederman explains : "this [subsection (ii) of the definition of 'unlawful enemy combatant'] means that if the Pentagon says you're an unlawful enemy combatant -- using whatever criteria they wish -- then as far as Congress, and U.S. law, is concerned, you are one, whether or not you have had any connection to 'hostilities' at all."
The bill also contains a definition of "wrongfully aiding the enemy" which labels all American citizens who breach their "allegiance" to President Bush and the actions of his government as terrorists subject to possible arrest, torture and conviction in front of a military tribunal.
The bill also formalized:
State sponsored torture, including allowing the sexual torture of children in the presence of their parents. (Including specifically crushing and/or electrocuting the genitalia of children in attempts to extricate coerced and untrue testimony from their watching parents).
Designating a U.S. Citizen an "Unlawful Enemy Combatant" (which would make them potentially vulnerable to experience the above).
Arresting "Unlawful Enemy Combatants" (AMERICANS) in the middle of the night, never charging them, never allowing access to an attorney and denying them every Constitutionally protected right - in effect slicing the throat of Habeas Corpus (Due Process), the backbone of democracy since the Magna Carta.
Making legal every illegal thing this Administration has done over the last 3 1/2 years in the name of the "War on Terror" (fear-mongering for profit), including illegally spying on Americans and advocating and approving torture in violation of the Geneva Conventions.

It's Official, More Than A Million U.S. Gulf War Troops Dead and Disabled
According to an official Department of Veterans Affairs Gulf war Information Systems Report dated August 2007, more than THREE AND A HALF MILLION U.S. troops who took part in the Gulf War since 1990 are dead or disabled.
On page 7 of the official report under the title Compensation and Pension Statistics August 2007, on line six of the chart the total Veterans who have been granted "Claims Granted Service Connection" is 1,201,104 Gulf War Veterans. A total of 1,603,743 claims have been filed (line 3).
The trillions of dollars cost of this illegal war in financial terms is one thing, in regard to killing and disabling millions of U.S. citizens it is entirely another matter. However, how many Gulf War Veterans are dead?

What is confusing is the enormous difference between the deaths listed amongst the deployed verses the non-deployed troops. How is it that three times more troops are dying and being disabled outside of the Gulf War region? We believe this is because the troops are immediately evacuated out of the Gulf when they are injured.
Evacuated troops are conveniently not counted as dead in the Gulf or Iraq, because they died in transit or back in the good old U.S.A. The same would apply to injured troops who are only classified as receiving disability months after they are returned to the U.S., conveniently avoiding government war statistics so that George Bush can say this disastrous war 'is going well'...
Clearly the government and mainstream media has managed to keep these millions of Gulf War casualties and deaths out of view of the public. It's as though the million plus disabled and dead U.S. Gulf War Veterans never even existed.
The VA report indicates that 2,312,675 U.S. troops who were on active duty between August 1990 and August 2007, have died. Clearly millions of soldiers on active duty in and from 1990 are not dead of old age or natural causes by 2007. The National Center for Health Statistics http://www.cdc.gov/nchs calculates the mortality rate in the U.S. at 825.9 deaths per 100,000 population, in 2005. That would imply that with a population of 6.8 million, one would expect around 60 thousand a year to die naturally, or around 1 million, not 2.3 million! Soldiers in active duty since 1990 would however still be in good physical shape in 2007, so the natural mortality would be substantially lower than 60 thousand per year. This leaves us with far more than a million unaccounted deaths.
We believe the injured troops are rushed back to the U.S. before they are dead, injured troops naturally are no longer on active duty, conveniently they die when they are no longer active and not counted amongst those "dying in Iraq".
The official Veterans report clearly blows the 4,000 dead veterans the government and mainstream media are reporting out of the gulf as a complete and utter lie. Millions of U.S. Gulf War troops are disabled and dead. This is no greater lie than the lies the government used to get the U.S. into the war in the first place.
Further information coming from reporters and troops in Iraq is that the government is simply bulldozing sand over dead troops and listing them as missing in action thereby avoiding any statistics regarding dead or disabled.
Millions of U.S. soldiers are dead and disabled, however, what of the innocent Iraqi's they murdered? Far more than a million Iraqi civilians are dead and many million have lost their homes and everything they own from a completely illegal invasion of their Nation by the U.S. How would American's feel if Iraq invaded and occupied the U.S.? At least an invasion of the U.S. by Iraq could be justified by the irrefutable fact that the U.S. has and uses weapons of mass destruction! The invasion of Iraq by the U.S. is far worse than the invasion of Poland by Hitler. Although Hitler probably would have used them if he had them, Hitler never used weapons of mass destruction when he invaded Poland.

Some Early Hitler Backers
We do know that prominent European and American industrialists were sponsoring all manner of totalitarian political groups at that time, including Communists and various Nazi groups. The U.S. Kilgore Committee records that:
By 1919 Krupp was already giving financial aid to one of the reactionary political groups which sowed the seed of the present Nazi ideology. Hugo Stinnes was an early contributor to the Nazi Party (National Socialistische Deutsche Arbeiter Partei). By 1924 other prominent industrialists and financiers, among them Fritz Thyssen, Albert Voegler, Adolph [sic] Kirdorf, and Kurt von Schroder, were secretly giving substantial sums to the Nazis. In 1931 members of the coalowners' association which Kirdorf headed pledged themselves to pay 50 pfennigs for each ton of' coal sold, the money to go to the organization which Hitler was building.3
Hitler's 1924 Munich trial yielded evidence that the Nazi Party received $20,000 from Nuremburg industrialists. The most interesting name from this period is that of Emil Kirdorf, who had earlier acted as conduit for financing German involvement in the Bolshevik Revolution.4 Kirdorfs role in financing Hitler was, in his own words:
In 1923 I came into contact for the first time with the National-Socialist movement .... I first heard the Fuehrer in the Essen Exhibition Hall. His clear exposition completely convinced and overwhelmed me. In 1927 I first met the Fuehrer personally. I travelled to Munich and there had a conversation with the Fuehrer in the Bruckmann home. During four and a half hours Adolf Hitler explained to me his programme in de tail. I then begged the Fuehrer to put together the lecture he had given me in the form of a pamphlet. I then distributed this pamphlet in my name in business and manufacturing circles.
Since then I have placed myself completely at the disposition of his movement, Shortly after our Munich conversation, and as a result of the pamphlet which the Fuehrer composed and I distributed, a number of meetings took place between the Fuehrer and leading personalities in the field of indus. try. For the last time before the taking over of power, the leaders of industry met in my house together with Adolf Hitler, Rudolf Hess, Hermann Goering and other leading personalities of the party.5

Have you ever wondered how Adolph Hitler - a mediocre painter of Austrian origin - transformed himself into Germany's Fuhrer during the 1930s and 1940s?
The Nazi phenomenon was no historical coincidence, and far less a philosophical whim made real by just one man. Nazism had its followers, many of them exceptionally wealthy, veritable alchemists of the financial world back then.
According to research carried out over the last few years, Wall Street bankers (amongst others) financed Hitler's rise to power whilst making large profits at the same time. What is yet still more deplorable is the fact that relatives of the current U.S. president were amongst this group of individuals.
U.S. authors Webster G. Tarpley and Anton Cheitkin reveal in the recently published George Bush: The Unauthorized Biography that Prescott Bush (George W. Bush's grandfather) and other directors of the Union Banking Company (UBC) were Nazi collaborators.
The book relates how in 1922 - when national socialism was emerging - railroad impresario W. Averell Harriman traveled to Berlin and interviewed the Thyssen family with a view to founding a German-U.S. bank. The Thyssens were already behind-the-scenes owners of several financial institutions that allowed them to transfer their money from Germany to the Netherlands and from there onto the United States.
The banks in question were the August Thyssen Bank whose headquarters were located in Berlin; the Bank voor Handel (Netherlands) and the Union Banking Corporation (New York). At the beginning of the 1920s, one of the members of this family, Fritz Thyssen - author of I Paid Hitler - contributed some $25,000 USD to the recently formed German National Socialist Workers' Party, becoming the prime and most important financier of the Fuhrer in his ascent to power.
According to the book's authors, Thyssen was fascinated by Hitler, citing his talent as a public speaker and his ability to lead the masses. However, what impressed him most was the order that prevailed at his rallies and the almost military discipline of his followers.
And so, in 1931 Thyssen joined the Nazi party, becoming one of the most powerful members of the Nazi war machine.
At that time, the magnate presided over the German Steel Trust, a steel industry consortium founded by Clarence Dillon, one of Wall Street's most influential men. One of Dillon's most trustworthy collaborators was Samuel Bush: Prescott's father, George Senior's grandfather and great-grandfather of the current U.S. president George W. Bush.
In 1923, Harriman and the Thyssens decided to set up a bank and appointed George Herbert Walker - Prescott's father-in-law - as president. Later, in 1926, they established the Union Banking Corporation (UBC) with Prescott Bush at the helm. That same year, he was also named vice president and partner at Brown Brothers Harriman. Both firms allowed the Thyssens to send money to the United States from Germany via the Netherlands.
U.S. economist Victor Thorn has noted that although a large number of other corporations aided the Nazis (such as Standard Oil and Rockefeller's Chase Bank, as well as U.S. automobile manufacturers) Prescott Bush's interests were much more profound and sinister.
Thorn adds that UBC became a secret channel to protect Nazi capital leaving Germany for the United States via the Netherlands. When the Nazis needed to retrieve their funds, Brown Brothers Harriman sent them directly to Germany.
In this way, UBC received money from the Netherlands and Brown Brothers Harriman sent it back. And who was on the executive of both of these companies? Prescott Bush himself, the Nazis' first money launderer.
In their book, Tarpley and Chaitkin explain that in this way a significant part of the Bush family's financial base is related to supporting and aiding Adolph Hitler. Therefore, the current U.S. president, just like his father (former CIA director, vice president and president) reached the peak of the U.S. political hierarchy thanks to his great-grandfather and grandfather and generally his entire family, who financially aided and encouraged the Nazis.
Some time later, in October 1942, the U.S. authorities confiscated Nazi bank funds from the New York UBC, whose then president was Prescott. The firm was condemned as a financial and commercial collaborator with the enemy and all its assets were seized.
Later, the U.S. government also ordered the seizure of the assets of a further two leading financial agencies directed by Prescott through the accounts of the Harriman banking institution: the Holland-America Trading Corporation (a U.S.-Dutch commercial firm) and the Seamless Steel Equipment Corporation.
Then on November 11, 1942, an embargo was imposed on the Silesian-American Corporation - another firm headed by Bush and Walker - under the same Trading with the Enemy Act.
However, in 1951, the embargo was lifted and the enterprising businessman recovered some $1.5 million USD, earmarked for new investments largely to swell the Bush family's patrimony.
To this should be added a resumé of files belonging to Dutch and U.S. information services confirming the direct links between Prescott Bush, the German Thyssen family and the blood money of a group of rich U.S. families from the Second World War.
Tarpley and Chaitkin affirm that the great financial crash of 1929-1931 affected the United States, Germany and Britain, weakening their respective governments. At the same time, Prescott Bush became even more diligent, still more desirous of doing everything that was necessary to safeguard his place in the world. It was during this crisis that some members of the Anglo-U.S wealthy class supported the installation of Hitler's regime in Germany.
To sum up, the authors categorically state that the Bush family's fortune arose as a result of its unconditional support for Adolph Hitler's political project.
The UBC, under Prescott Bush's direction and with the long-term cooperation of Fritz Thyssen's German Steel Trust participated in the emergence, preparation and financing of the Nazi war machine through the manufacture of armored vehicles, fighter planes, guns and explosives.
The Bush family's habit of dominating territories and wealth is nothing new. Their fascist genes were generated during the 1930s. Therefore defining the occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq and the threats to other countries as a continuance of blitzkreig offensives as fascist is no blunder. Neither is convening an anti-fascist front is a rhetorical exercise.

My experience with Israel. Ask any Arab living in Israel if he would rather live in Saudi Arabia, Syria, or Israel. I haven't asked ALL Arabs but I would be surprised if one Arab in Israel would want to live in Saudi Arabia or Syria.

Look at a freaking map, and you'll see that the land "given" to the Palestinians is all desert, while the state of Israel is given the fertile land and access to fresh water. That was the issue to begin with; the UN carved the state of Israel out of some of the most fertile land in the region.

According to a recent report by the newspaper "The Guardian," Jewish Prof. Ariel Toaff, who is a professor at Bar-Ilan University in Israel of Medieval Jewish history but is currently a visiting professor in Italy, has written a book,"Pasque di Sangue" (Easter of Blood), which describes Jewish ritual murder rites of Jews in the past.
Some details of the book were published in the paper "Corriere Della Sera," which also has an online section describing the book.
Prof. Toaff's book reportedly "describes the mutilation and crucifixion of a two-year-old boy to recreate Christ's execution at Pesach, the Jewish Easter. The festival marks the fleeing of the Jews from Egypt and Prof Toaff says Christian blood was used for 'magic and therapeutic practices,'" noted the Guardian. Further describing the bizarre and hateful customs of Jewish extremists, Prof. Toaff noted that Jewish occultists would sometimes mix blood in their matzo balls, which was eaten during their religious rites.
He also describes many children who were reportedly crucified on the cross.
Unsurprisingly, many Jewish supremacists quickly denied Prof. Toaff's accurate findings in an attempt to hide their ancient, bizarre, and frightening customs from the general public.
However, Prof. Toaff was hardly the first to acknowledge such crimes in recent times. Indeed, in more recent times, a Jewish lady had appeared on the Oprah Winfrey show several years ago and described how some of her relatives had engaged in similar crimes. The honest and brave Jewish lady, Vicki Polin (who used the pseudonym of "Rachel" on the Oprah Winfrey show to avoid reprisals), told of how her family had engaged in some extremely bizarre Satanic Jewish kabbalistic rites, including that of infanticide (video of Oprah's interview with Polin).
In the interview, Oprah asked the young woman, who undoubtedly had been traumatized by the ordeal, about what exactly had occurred. Oprah opened the discussion, telling of how the poor girl had grown up in a family that "participated in human sacrifice," undoubtedly causing emotional scars that may never heal.

It seems difficult to imagine such a massacre was not mentioned by Josephus, a first-century historian who described other events in Herod's life. One could be a sceptical of Matthew's account of a massacre of infants.
In fact, demographic clues from first century Palestine reveal that Bethlehem was a small village, with a population between three hundred and a thousand. Experts estimate that, at any given time, the number of babies under the age of two would be only between seven and twenty. So numbers alone may be the reason why Josephus does not mention the murders.

The Guardian has obtained confirmation from newly discovered files in the US National Archives that a firm of which Prescott Bush was a director was involved with the financial architects of Nazism.
His business dealings, which continued until his company's assets were seized in 1942 under the Trading with the Enemy Act, has led more than 60 years later to a civil action for damages being brought in Germany against the Bush family by two former slave labourers at Auschwitz and to a hum of pre-election controversy.
The evidence has also prompted one former US Nazi war crimes prosecutor to argue that the late senator's action should have been grounds for prosecution for giving aid and comfort to the enemy.
The debate over Prescott Bush's behaviour has been bubbling under the surface for some time. There has been a steady internet chatter about the "Bush/Nazi" connection, much of it inaccurate and unfair. But the new documents, many of which were only declassified last year, show that even after America had entered the war and when there was already significant information about the Nazis' plans and policies, he worked for and profited from companies closely involved with the very German businesses that financed Hitler's rise to power. It has also been suggested that the money he made from these dealings helped to establish the Bush family fortune and set up its political dynasty.
Remarkably, little of Bush's dealings with Germany has received public scrutiny, partly because of the secret status of the documentation involving him. But now the multibillion dollar legal action for damages by two Holocaust survivors against the Bush family, and the imminent publication of three books on the subject are threatening to make Prescott Bush's business history an uncomfortable issue for his grandson, George W, as he seeks re-election.
While there is no suggestion that Prescott Bush was sympathetic to the Nazi cause, the documents reveal that the firm he worked for, Brown Brothers Harriman (BBH), acted as a US base for the German industrialist, Fritz Thyssen, who helped finance Hitler in the 1930s before falling out with him at the end of the decade. The Guardian has seen evidence that shows Bush was the director of the New York-based Union Banking Corporation (UBC) that represented Thyssen's US interests and he continued to work for the bank after America entered the war.

Bush was also on the board of at least one of the companies that formed part of a multinational network of front companies to allow Thyssen to move assets around the world.
Thyssen owned the largest steel and coal company in Germany and grew rich from Hitler's efforts to re-arm between the two world wars. One of the pillars in Thyssen's international corporate web, UBC, worked exclusively for, and was owned by, a Thyssen-controlled bank in the Netherlands. More tantalising are Bush's links to the Consolidated Silesian Steel Company (CSSC), based in mineral rich Silesia on the German-Polish border. During the war, the company made use of Nazi slave labour from the concentration camps, including Auschwitz. The ownership of CSSC changed hands several times in the 1930s, but documents from the US National Archive declassified last year link Bush to CSSC, although it is not clear if he and UBC were still involved in the company when Thyssen's American assets were seized in 1942.
Three sets of archives spell out Prescott Bush's involvement. All three are readily available, thanks to the efficient US archive system and a helpful and dedicated staff at both the Library of Congress in Washington and the National Archives at the University of Maryland.
The first set of files, the Harriman papers in the Library of Congress, show that Prescott Bush was a director and shareholder of a number of companies involved with Thyssen.
The second set of papers, which are in the National Archives, are contained in vesting order number 248 which records the seizure of the company assets. What these files show is that on October 20 1942 the alien property custodian seized the assets of the UBC, of which Prescott Bush was a director. Having gone through the books of the bank, further seizures were made against two affiliates, the Holland-American Trading Corporation and the Seamless Steel Equipment Corporation. By November, the Silesian-American Company, another of Prescott Bush's ventures, had also been seized.
The third set of documents, also at the National Archives, are contained in the files on IG Farben, who was prosecuted for war crimes.
A report issued by the Office of Alien Property Custodian in 1942 stated of the companies that "since 1939, these (steel and mining) properties have been in possession of and have been operated by the German government and have undoubtedly been of considerable assistance to that country's war effort".
Prescott Bush, a 6ft 4in charmer with a rich singing voice, was the founder of the Bush political dynasty and was once considered a potential presidential candidate himself. Like his son, George, and grandson, George W, he went to Yale where he was, again like his descendants, a member of the secretive and influential Skull and Bones student society. He was an artillery captain in the first world war and married Dorothy Walker, the daughter of George Herbert Walker, in 1921.
In 1924, his father-in-law, a well-known St Louis investment banker, helped set him up in business in New York with Averill Harriman, the wealthy son of railroad magnate E H Harriman in New York, who had gone into banking.
One of the first jobs Walker gave Bush was to manage UBC. Bush was a founding member of the bank and the incorporation documents, which list him as one of seven directors, show he owned one share in UBC worth $125.
The bank was set up by Harriman and Bush's father-in-law to provide a US bank for the Thyssens, Germany's most powerful industrial family.
August Thyssen, the founder of the dynasty had been a major contributor to Germany's first world war effort and in the 1920s, he and his sons Fritz and Heinrich established a network of overseas banks and companies so their assets and money could be whisked offshore if threatened again.
By the time Fritz Thyssen inherited the business empire in 1926, Germany's economic recovery was faltering. After hearing Adolf Hitler speak, Thyssen became mesmerised by the young firebrand. He joined the Nazi party in December 1931 and admits backing Hitler in his autobiography, I Paid Hitler, when the National Socialists were still a radical fringe party. He stepped in several times to bail out the struggling party: in 1928 Thyssen had bought the Barlow Palace on Briennerstrasse, in Munich, which Hitler converted into the Brown House, the headquarters of the Nazi party.
