Two Words for Rod Dreher
Benedict of Nursia is no match for Rahm of Chicago.
I spent the Memorial Day weekend with Rahm Emanuel. No, I wasn’t hanging out at the beach with President Obama’s chief of staff. Rather, I spent the weekend reading Naftali Bendavid’s The Thumpin’: How Rahm Emanuel and the Democrats Learned to Be Ruthless and Ended the Republican Revolution.
Emanuel’s tenure as chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee during the 2006 election cycle is the model Republicans must attempt to reverse-engineer if they hope to regain power in Washington anytime soon. And Republicans are never going to succeed if they listen to those who tell them the reason they’ve been losing elections is that the GOP is too “mean-spirited.”
Ever since Rush Limbaugh spoke the Four Words Nobody Is Allowed to Say About Obama — “I hope he fails” — Republicans have heard a symphonic serenade from a chorus of critics who insist that blunt words and other such mean-spiritedness are the essential sources of their party’s woes.
Chief among the choirboys of niceness is Rod Dreher, the former National Review staffer, Dallas Morning News columnist and BeliefNet blogger. In his 2006 book Crunchy Cons, Dreher accused the “conservative mainstream” of believing that “accumulating wealth and power is…the point of life,” and further declared, “The tragic flaw of Western economics is that it is based on exploiting and encouraging greed and envy.”
Lately, Dreher has endlessly whined about talk-radio personalities he considers uncouth lowbrows. In March, Dreher said that Limbaugh’s speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference “made clear that the GOP and the conservative movement are stuck on stupid.” In April, Dreher said Glenn Beck was “giving crackpots a bad name.” Then Friday, Dreher called Mark Levin a “cretin,” a “creep” and a “trashmouth.”
Levin had responded to a liberal caller (“Obama is a lot smarter than you folks give him credit for,” the lady said) by wondering why her husband didn’t commit suicide. This is the kind of bombastic putdown Levin’s regular listeners expect from the man Sean Hannity dubbed “the Great One,” and whom Limbaugh often calls “F. Lee Levin.”
“Cretin”? A magna cum laude graduate of Temple University, Levin served in the Reagan administration, ultimately as chief of staff to Attorney General Ed Meese, before becoming president of the Landmark Legal Foundation. All of this Levin accomplished before beginning his successful radio career and, most recently, authoring the No. 1 bestseller Liberty and Tyranny: A Conservative Manifesto.
That Levin employs hyperbole and sarcasm on his show is only shocking to people who don’t listen to talk radio. More importantly, Levin believes conservatives are in a fight they cannot afford to lose, against implacable adversaries determined to win at all costs. When a guy begins a fight by slamming a barstool into the back of your head, the Marquis of Queensberry rules do not apply. If you respond by ripping open his carotid artery with the jagged edge of a broken beer bottle, whose fault is that? (“He needed killing,” as Texans like to say.)
“Turn the other cheek” is an excellent moral principle, but it doesn’t work in politics any better than it works in saloon brawls. When Democrats were encouraging their friends at MSNBC to describe conservatives attending Tea Party rallies as “teabaggers” — a term borrowed from gay-porn vernacular — where were Dreher’s complaints about incivility? And if Dreher considers “trashmouth” to be a mortal sin, why isn’t he throwing stones at Rahm Emanuel, who unloads f-bomb barrages as remorselessly as the RAF pounded Dresden?
Naftali’s book about Emanuel and the 2006 campaign is an emphatic rebuke to the Dreheresque notion that niceness is a winning formula in politics. Emanuel is a hard-driving Chicagoan (“intense+Rahm+Emanuel” = 46,800 Google results) who takes pride in the brutal effectiveness of his political tactics.
Too much analysis of recent Republican electoral woes has been written by intellectual elites in search of a “Big Picture” trend that explains how the GOP went from dominance to near-irrelevance in four short years. Rather than propounding abstract ideological theories, Naftali’s detailed account of the 2006 campaign offers concrete examples of how Democrats won through improving the basic mechanics of partisan electioneering.
One telling vignette: In summer 2006, accusations of shady dealings by Democratic Rep. Al Mollohan of West Virginia threatened to wreck Emanuel’s message that Republicans had a monopoly on corruption. And if an incumbent Democrat were defeated, that would change the math on Emanuel’s strategy to recapture a House majority.
How did Emanuel rescue Mollohan? By calling the incumbent’s Republican rival a liar. The GOP challenger had been in the military during Operation Desert Storm in 1991 and called himself a “Gulf War veteran,” although he hadn’t deployed overseas. Emanuel seized on this and had DCCC staffers push it to reporters. “We need that story,” Emanuel said. “It’s all about Al Mollohan unless we come up with something.” The result? “Mollohan Foe Battles Résumé Charges,” said the headline on a news story by Roll Call’s John Bresnahan. Other publications followed suit, effectively changing the subject — exactly the outcome Emanuel sought. Was this unfair? Ask Emanuel that question, and you’ll get a two-word response. (Hint: The second word will be “you.”)
Whatever you think of Mark Levin’s radio program, he at least seems to understand that employing the politics of niceness against today’s Democrats is like sending a church-league women’s softball team to do battle with the Crips.
Meanwhile, Dreher urges conservatives to choose as their role model fifth-century Italian monastic Benedict of Nursia. Piety is a virtue, but the founder of the Benedictine order has not been previously renowned as a political strategist.
Let Rod Dreher urge Rahm Emanuel to be more like Benedict of Nursia. He’d get a two-word response, which is all he deserves from Mark Levin.

Let me get this straight:
Democrats are tough campaigners, ergo it's cool for a Republican talk show host to tell a lady that her husband should kill himself?
The second assertion doesn't follow from the first.
It isn't funny, it isn't proportional, it isn't original, or really anything else a host should try to be. Levin is trash, apparently. What's more, posed bravado aside, I bet Dreher, or even George Will, could whip him in a wrestling match.
There's tough and focused, and there's petty and bitter. The first is real, and it's evidenced by standing up to your allies, too. The second is phony.

No, it's not "cool" - it's also not worthy of the vapors that only come upon Dreher & others of his ilk when a conservative says something.
The point with Dreher, et al. is they seem to be bucking for the title of "most popular conservative at the liberal cocktail party" .... utterly ineffective as Republicans / conservatives because they're simply too polite to challenge the left's reigning orthodoxy in a meaningful way, they earn their plate of cocktail franks & meatballs by assuring one and all that they find conservatives uncouth too.
Dreher's the kind of guy who shows up at a gun fight with a butter knife.

To a certain extent, I get what your saying. It irritates me when Republicans weenie out on policy (particularly abortion and to a lesser extent immigration) to ingratiate themselves to that crowd.
Even so, motives are harder to judge than actions. If given a choice, I'm going to judge actions first, and more harshly, team affiliations aside.
Levin's actions (speech is sort of an action) were garbage. Dreher's motives for pointing that out might have been garbage, too. It's hard to tell.

Mark Levin's great sins in the eyes of the Fauxcons are that he adheres to conservative principles, will not grant the good intentions of our enemies, and will not take their bullying in gratitude for the attention.
His greatest sin is wanting to win.
Dreher and Frum spend all their misbegotten time trying to find that mythical "Third Way" between liberty and tyranny. How successful are they? Well, Dreher used to be a columnist with nationwide reach writing for National Review. He's now stuck in Dallas watching newspapers die around him. Mark Levin got Frum to admit on his program that his latest book sold around 25,000 copies. This is from a former White House speechwriter beloved by the Left Wing Media as a candidate for the David Brock Growth In Journalism Award (aka the Backstabber).
Meanwhile, Levin's got one of the top-rated talk shows in the nation and a #1 bestselling book.
The Frums, Drehers, Friederswhatsis, and Powells of the GOP were utterly discredited when the party ran their favored "moderate" maverick candidate and got shown the door.
You can't beat something with nothing and you surely can't beat liberal fascist with moderate quislings.
It is Mark Levin who rallies the troops for the battle we must wage to save this nation and its Constitution.
Let these clowns sulk in their tents.

It should be noted that the rule of Benedict required carrying a dagger or knife as a part of the Benedictine habit. Perhaps Mr. Dreher was not fully aware of what he was suggesting.

As I recall, Mr. Dreher was an intelligent and enjoyable writer at NRO. He sounds as if he has been slipping leftward and that is a shame, but it's his choice; let us not carry on as if he is a complete scoundrel.

Rod Dreher is an amalgam of Russell Kirk and Wendell Berry. Which is to say he's OK when advocating a rustic, feel-good voluntary simplicty. But he isn't up to rough-and-tumble style that is the stock in trade of Rahmbo Emanuel -- and that we must employ to defeat the Obama machine.
We need Sly Stallone or pre-Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

RSM, I have been defending you in some other venues. My point being that while for paleocons movement cons are part of the problem they are not as much of a problem as the moderate RINO crowd. So criticisms of the movement must be identifiably paleo and rightists and not sound like just more moderate RINO whining (such as Powell, Frum , Parker, etc.). But on the other hand it is equally important for movement cons to distinguish criticism from their right (or a different kind of right) from moderate RINO criticisms. Rob Dreher is not a moderate RINO. He is a "crunchy con" which in many ways is just paleoconservatism light without the hard edge.
For example, his point that conservatism is not about acquisitiveness and materialism is sound. It is not a leftist anti-capitalism statement; it is a conservative statement about the permanent things that are truly important in life. I think speaking up for civility and chivalry in discourse is unarguably conservative as well.
Both sides are having trouble distinguishing the greater enemy from the lesser enemy (or half-way co-combatants). (The sides being the paleo anti-movement cons and the movement anti-RINO cons. Both are anti-RINO.) If one is a movement conservative wholly committed to movement ideology (which I don’t get the impression you are), then the paleos represent a threat to that, but it needs to be acknowledged that that is a threat from the right and not just more moderate middle-of-the-road carping. Dreher does not equal Frum.

Levin is correct! The reason that Republicans have lost in 2006 and 2008 was because their so-called leaders were being too nice. They should be bringing an AK-47 and a baseball bat to the knife fight with the Democrats, instead of their copy of the Queensberry Rules. An example is the last election, where the Republican candidate was TOO NICE to call out the [now] President on his associations with Chicago mobsters, radicalized preachers; his true place of birth; his extreme political philosophy; and his proven lack of administration [political] expertise. The result---a loss for the Republicans. The upcoming congressional hearings on this radical leftist SC nominee sadly will probably be another example of this. Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas were butchered by Democrats in humiliating fashion; but now the tables are turned. Will the Republicans on the Judiciary Committee go after this extremist candidate for the SC, or will they be NICE and POLITE? If the latter, they'll lose again in 2010 and 2012; if the former, they stand a good chance of winning!!!!!!!!!!!

Red Phillips is spot on. You can't just label everyone who breaks away from the conservative movement as a RINO.
Dreher's Crunchies, like the Paleocons, aren't trying to move the GOP or conservatism leftward (unlike David Frum, who IS trying to do that). Their criticism essentially comes from the right, which is probably why movement conservatives find it so infuriating.
Is it really unacceptable for a conservative to point out that Mark Levin and Sean Hannity and Glen Beck aren't particularly advancing the cause of conservatism? These guys have large audiences, but they are niche audiences. Far more people are turned off by garbage like telling a caller her husband should blow his brains out. Isn't that obvious?

Rod is offended by the comment which is basically the use of hyperbole to reinforce a point. Well, newsflash: that's what modern political writers do, including Rod. He himself once said he wnted to "gay-marry" another male writer who had written an article he enjoyed very much. That might also offend someone of Rod's own religious tradition if it was taken seriously as a statement of intention to commit sodomy. But he was only joking, ostensibly, as was Levin.
Moral: we should all be careful of what we say. Well, unless we're Rahm Emmanuel, I guess.

Grand irony: Rod routinely trashmouths comboxers with whom he disagrees. He has been known to lob some truly vicious insults at comboxers who dare to challenge him -- and he reserves his most scathing vitriol for women. I know: I've been on the receiving end of Rod's venom on more than one occasion.

Rome, Italy -- Italian and Russian police, working together, broke up a ring of Jewish gangsters who had been involved in the manufacture of child rape and snuff pornography.
Three Russian Jews and eight Italian Jews were arrested after police discovered they had been kidnapping non-Jewish children between the ages of two and five years old from Russian orphanges, raping the children, and then murdering them on film. Mostly non-Jewish customers, including 1700 nationwide, 600 in Italy, and and unknown number in the United States, paid as much as $20,000 per film to watch little children being raped and murdered.
Jewish officials in a major Italian news agency tried to cover the story up, but were circumvented by Italisn news reporters, who broadcasts scenes from the films live at prime time on Italisn television to more than 11 million Italian viewers. Jewish officials then fired the executives responsible, claiming they were spreading "blood libel."
Throughout history, various groups have accused sects of Jews of ritually murdering small children. One such account, that of Hugh of Lincoln, led to the expulsion of all Jews from Britain in the 13th Century. Such accounts have generally been discounted, but are so wide spread that Jewish organizations have developed a name for them -- "blood libel".
The American group the ADL was founded to defend a Jew, Leo Frank, accused of raping and murdering a five year old girl, Mary Fagan, in his Atlanta pencil factory in 1913. The ADL claims he was innocent. A mob lynched him after the governor commuted his death sentence to life in prison.
Though AP and Reuters both ran stories on the episode, US media conglomerates refused to carry the story on television news, again saying the story would prejudice Americans against Jews.
Jewish gangsters in Russia have become increasingly linked to traffic in "white slaves" and prostitutes through Israel, according to a recent report in the Jerusalem Post. Israel turns an official blind eye to forced prostitution, and does not punish Israeli citizens who choose to own "sex slaves", as long as the slaves are foreign and non-Jews.

British link to 'snuff' videos

Britain is a key link in the biggest ever international investigation into the production and supply of paedophile 'snuff' movies - in which children are murdered on film - an Observer investigation can reveal.
The key suspect in the inquiry, a Russian who was arrested last week in Moscow for distribution of thousands of sadistic child porn videos and pictures, was traced following the seizure of his products from British paedophiles.
Dmitri Vladimirovich Kuznetsov, a 30-year-old former car mechanic in Moscow, was identified after British Customs and police traced the origin of violent child porn videos found in the UK back to Russia.
Last week Italian police seized 3,000 of Kuznetsov's videos on their way to clients in Italy, sparking an international hunt for paedophiles who have bought his products. The Italian investigators say the material includes footage of children dying during abuse. Prosecutors in Naples are considering charging those who have bought the videos with complicity in murder. They say some may have specifically requested films of killings.
British authorities yesterday confirmed that scores of Kuznetsov's videos, produced in his small flat in Moscow's rundown Vykhino district, have been found in the UK. They are concerned that 'snuff' movies in which children are killed may have also been imported.
Around a dozen British men have already been arrested and charged with offences alleged to be connected to the Russian tapes. A second Russian child porn ring, which allegedly had a British distributor, was broken up earlier this year. The investigation into the importing of violent Russian child porn which led to the identification and subsequent imprisonment of Kuznetsov started about 15 months ago after Customs seized material coming into the country. Since then there have been dozens of other finds.
'We have seen some very, very nasty stuff involving sadistic abuse of very young children, but actual deaths on film takes it a whole step further. That is very worrying,' said one senior customs officer this weekend.
British paedophiles were paying between £50 and £100 for Kuznetsov's tapes, the officer said. Further fees were paid for access to a website that features pictures of extremely violent abuse.
Though two men arrested with Kuznetsov have also been imprisoned by Moscow authorities, only one of the three remains behind bars. Dmitri Ivanov was sentenced to 11 years for actually participating in the abuse that was being filmed. The others were released under an amnesty aimed at clearing Russia's overcrowded prisons.
When officers from the Moscow Criminal Investigation Department raided Kuznetsov's flat they found two boys in a makeshift studio. They seized a huge quantity of films and other pornographic material as well as lists of clients in Italy, Germany, America and Britain.
Last week Italian detectives moved in, following months of inquiries, and arrested eight people. The police searched more than 600 homes and say they now have evidence against about 500 people. Among the suspects were businessmen, public employees and a university student. Several of them were married, with children of their own. Hundreds of people are also under investigation in Germany.
The Russian videos, which had been ordered over the internet, were intercepted when they came into Italy by post, repackaged and then delivered by undercover police officers. They cost between £300 and £4,000, depending on what type of film was ordered.
Covert film of young children naked or undressing was known as a 'SNIPE' video. The most appalling category was code-named 'Necros Pedo' in which children were raped and tortured until they died.
Police in Russia and the UK believe that Kuznetsov and his associates have been in business for more than two years in which time they are believed to have recruited around 100 boys - aged between nine and 15 - to be filmed.
'Most of the children were rounded up from railway stations. A lot of them came from the suburbs, or surrounding regions and were from deprived, problem families,' said Kiril Mazurin, a police spokesman.
'Usually when children like this arrive in the capital, they've got no idea where to go and hang around in the station. It's very easy to entice this kind of teenager - with a promise of a warm bed or a trip to the cinema.'

I am a regular listener to Mark Levin and for all his rough around the edges tendencies, he is more cerebral than both Rush and Hannity. His grasp of the real issues is evident, when all others are focused on some aspect of an issue, he is exploring what most of the time is the real issue. Can he be abrasive, yes and sometimes I wonder why and then it becomes clear. On the other hand I have heard him spend way more time with someone that just doesn't seem to get it than I ever would, in either case it is all an attempt to get his listeners to think. He doesn't expect his listeners to accept everything without question. He is not without his vices, he loves fast cars, Food and gambling apparently, but then again this for the moment is still America although changing quickly and he has a right to enjoy all of those things. As far as Mark debating Dreher or George Will, this is an experienced lawyer and I suspect the he would devour either in short order. George Will who I did like, seems like he hasn't had an original thought is 20 years, thinks incorrectly that anything he says will be revered. What is obvious to me is the Democrats have the Republicans right where they want them, bickering. The Democrats have a luxury, for the most part their followers are not thinkers, easily lead, don't fight it just look at the last election while Republicans debated on forever about details the Dems painted broad strokes. Mostly lies as it turns out but broad strokes none the less. Now people are saying, yes we know Obama lies and its ok with us, hmmmm.... this is just what I want to see in my President.
