Treasury This Moment

Another subcabinet nominee withdraws — and Timothy Geithner and his boss are the main reason for what is a burgeoning fiasco in filling slots and making policy.

“People think Wall Street and our economy are in a mess? They have nothing on what we’re going through here,” said a career Treasury Department official after learning yesterday that former U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission member Annette Nazareth had withdrawn from consideration to serve as deputy Treasury secretary.

Senior White House officials were telling reporters on background last night that Nazareth withdrew from consideration because initial feedback from the Senate on her possible nomination was that she would endure a tough confirmation process due to her role at the SEC directing oversight of market regulation. But associates of Nazareth familiar with the situation say that there were other reasons for her to pull out. “She simply lost confidence in [Treasury Secretary Timothy] Geithner,” says a colleague of Nazareth’s at the law firm, Davis Polk & Wardwell. “There’s a lot of that going around, we hear.”

Nazareth’s decision is doubly embarrassing for the Obama White House because, her husband, Roger Ferguson, current CEO of TIAA-CREFF and former Vice Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, currently serves on the Economic Recovery Advisory Board, a post he was given by Obama.

Creating further confusion at Treasury, Caroline Atkinson, who currently works at the International Monetary Fund, also withdrew from consideration as undersecretary for international affairs. According to Treasury and Capitol Hill sources, her decision was linked to possible tax situations similar to that of Geithner.

“We have no one here. There is no leadership,” says another senior career Treasury official. “I’ve never seen anything like it. We have a secretary who seems to have no understanding of what his job entails, and no one in the White House seems to either know it or want to acknowledge it. We have people making decisions who shouldn’t be making decisions, and in positions where we should have people making decisions about our domestic economy, our banking system and our Wall Street recovery plan, we have no one. People should be alarmed by this, but no one seems to care.”

Currently, the only Senate-confirmed undersecretary is Stuart Levey, undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, but he is a Bush Administration confirmee, held over by the Obama Administration.

Late Thursday night rumors swirled around the Obama White House that Lee Sachs, a former assistant Treasury secretary in the Clinton Administration, who worked on the Obama transition team and who was “pitching in” in an advisory role for Geither, was also mulling withdrawing from consideration for a senior Treasury post.

Both Treasury officials who spoke on background say that there is a growing lack of confidence within the department over Geithner. One said, “He is a nice man, but he is out of his depth.”

On Wednesday, according to a senior Democratic leadership aide, Sen. Max Baucus, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, was “underwhelmed” by Geithner’s performance during testimony on the budget. “I think it’s safe to say that at least the Senate Democratic leadership is less than pleased with the performance of this White House and this Treasury Department. It’s a ***damned mess.”

Geithner's BFF, Lindsay Graham should take one for the team, resign from the Senate and go to work for him. Gov Sanford could appoint a real conservative to take Graham's place.

Rusty Gordon| 3.6.09 @ 7:36AM

What this situation calls for is a good speech. Some "soaring rhetoric" could fix all the problems at Treasury. Hope. Change.

Ken Miller| 3.6.09 @ 7:36AM

What do you mean Geithner doewsn't know what he is doing. He is doing exactly what the -one wants him to do. Tank the economy, so his internal security force can take over and move the kulaks out.

Directive 10-290, in effect. Who is John Galt?

frost| 3.6.09 @ 8:00AM

Amen, Dennis. Started re-reading Ayn Rand's superb classic a short time ago ("1984" is next, again; try to re-read it every dozen years or so).
In my edition, page 324 kinda starts a recitation of what I view as the thinking in Obama's futile Treasury exercise. Pitiful, nothing less.
Yet, the uneducated (with the complicity of the cheerleading media) still think that neo-Marxist is great? We're in serious trouble, gang -- and "Atlas Shrugged" should be required-reading for congress - - but I doubt they'd comprehend its meaning....

TennesseeVolunteer| 3.6.09 @ 8:04AM

The adults aren't in charge anymore and look what hope and change hath wrought!
I was just watching Scarborough and they were talking about radical Islamists and when they take over a country's government, the country falls into economic ruin, murder and famine (like Darfur).
The Obama team is not much different. There are very few adults on the team and the cabal of change and hope artists (Emmanuel, Carville, Begala, Geithner, Obama etc.) have never run anything. They don't know what to do. They have sat on the outside of this country's day to day workings bitching about hope and change. But when it is their turn to run things, they don't have a clue and probably disable any adults they do have on staff. With crazy goals (like ruining an economy, raising spending, giving away health care, giving bailouts to companies that don't have customers like GM), they are dooming us to economic failure.
They are pigs at the trough, it is all they know. Carter proved it. Hunker down america, support the companies that do things right (Ford didn't take a bailout). Be ready to be the adults when the storm is over.

Melvin| 3.6.09 @ 8:05AM

This might be considered a simplistic opinion of Mr. Geithner, but after much deliberation Mr. Geithner is nothing more than a cheap Brooks Brother's wearing weasel.
Anyone is in a powerful position and makes a conscious decision not to pay their taxes, is a weasel.

Bill Hussein O'Stalin| 3.6.09 @ 8:15AM

We're watching a White House fiddling with Rush while Rome burns.

I have become convinced that Obama has hit on a solution, if he would only carry through on it.

Obama's fascination with tax cheats and crooks presents an opportunity for success, but it's too obvious, and perhaps that's why the Obama White House has missed it.

FEMA and the Department of Justice need to scour America's prisons to seek former crooked accountants, CPA's, and former crooked CEO's who would like to seek a government appointment.

Our prisons are full of white collar criminals and other then the fact they got caught and couldn't use their political connections to stay out of trouble or get a pardon from Bill Clinton, they are probably as good at scamming the American public out of their wealth as the current White House staff.

This would put people currently out of work to work in the Obama administration allowing him to claim a moral victory if nothing else. It would also save the taxpayers money as hundreds of white collar criminals are taken off of one public dole and put to work with the rest of the White House staff.

I urge the public to e-mail the White House with this suggestion so we can help them accomplish their goal of total criminality.

Dave| 3.6.09 @ 8:16AM

Remember, Congress doesn't read things that are over 1000 pages. So that would rule out Atlas...or the "stimulus bill."

TennesseeVolunteer| 3.6.09 @ 8:25AM

Had to post one more time...Peggy Noonan on Scarborough and now they are blaming the republicans for 8 FAILED YEARS and THEY ARE CRITICIZING THE REPUBLICANS FOR NOT OFFERING AN ALTERNATIVE PLAN. Sorry for yelling but I am so angry!
Hey Scarborough, here it is:
cut personal taxes by 5% at each level
cut capital gains by 10% or more
cut corporate taxes by a third
Let the market work, it is going to hurt for awhile but if you show growth strategies to the private investors to get back in the game, they will begin to invest in projects, companies..confidence will be gained.. the adult investors who have gotten out of the market will start putting their money in the market.
I am not an economist, just a simple business man but lets get back to the basics., If not, we simple business people will be waiting to pick up the pieces after the economic tsunami is over.

Nick| 3.6.09 @ 8:49AM

Mr. Morgenthau,

That is one of the best suggestions I've heard lately. I hope and pray it happens.

This ship sank the day Obama was sworn in. To say our republic is in peril for it's life is an understatement. You can't make thes crap up! It is almost as if they *want* our nation to fall.

There is no way any self respecting democrat can look at this gigantic mess and claim the "change" the slick obama campain promised has even the slightest chance of happening. Talk about the blind leading the blind!

Democrats, you have to admit that this is super-wicked ugly and that the dude you voted for doesn't exist. It was a slick scam job and a lie! He doesn't have the experience needed to drive a grabage truck, much lead the United States of America! You have betrayed America with your vote.

Consumerism, huge spending on arms, plastic trinkets, war mongering, over eating, living in excess, huge demand for foreign oil to prop up the vast false economy. Huge spending on funding terrorism, Credit cards, usury, theft.

No spending on development, huge spending on plots to take over oil producing countries, to control and dictate, state sponcered theft and robbery, the murder of children, looting of foreign countries. While all this was going on no one took into account of the cost.

The Iraq venture of theft mass murder and distruction with the only aim the theft and robbery of the Iraqi people, leaving unexploded cluster bombs and mountains of depleated urainium bombs to create deformed babies, which will be radio active for 4.5 billion years.

frost| 3.6.09 @ 10:34AM

Briefly, chickens -- about 50-million people were freed by our troops -- BUT, Dubya was a lousy leader -- terrible! He allowed the McLellans in the Pentagon to goof around with a no-win policy for 3-4 years longer than necessary, 'til ge got Petraeus in there -- AND, he should have either (1) insisted that we get paid for our efforts in oil, or (2) the coin-of-the-rhelm, cash from Iraqui oil profits.
Have to also agree with another writer - - if you think Jimmy Carter was bad, this present neo-Marxist will make Jimmy's futility look like chump-change. We're in mighty deep trouble, gang!

Does anyone know the expiration date of 'it's Bush's fault'?

Gill O'Teen| 3.6.09 @ 11:13AM

I see 2 possibilities: either obumah is a stupid jackass who is incapable of connecting the dots in a children's coloring book much less understanding that not raising taxes on 95% of this country's workers and stealing even more money from these same Americans by raising the taxes on companies which produce such important products as coal, gasoline and electricity are contrary policies; or he truly is 1000% smarter than Stephen Hawking and knows exactly what he is doing. I am more frightened of the second possibility.

I am seriously considering liquidating my last remaining paper asset other than the few dollars in my wallet - those will vanish soon enough, and buying more metal such as gold, silver and lead. The wonderful irony is that if the lemming in chief and his cronies in congress approve even more capital gains theft, I won’t have to pay any since sadly there will be no gains to tax.

Invest in precious metals such as gold, silver, platinum, copper and brass encased lead. Brass encased lead is more valuable when carried in a concealed steel container. Take a two by four to your next Tea Party.

frost| 3.6.09 @ 11:19AM

Obrigado, Rocco. It may take a while to determine the place/area we "escape" to -- but, at this point, I see little choice, assuming that the demented ones and their Marxist policies prevail.
Hey, we're badly outnumbered by the Something-for-Nothing bunch of parasites -- and I've had over 50% of my earnings (again, EARNINGS!) withheld by IRS, prior to Reagan's '82 tax-cut. Call me selfish? Quepos or the Jaco' area on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica (nice people too!) or the friendly fun-lovers in Brasil? We shall see....

frost| 3.6.09 @ 11:25AM

Beautiful comment, Ruth! Sure, Dubya was a pretty lousy president, but, compared to AlGore (who flunked Divinity Achool, and NOBODY flunks Divinity School) or John Kerry....?
McCain was a rotten choice, but Obama makes all others pale in comparrison, at least thus far, and given his background (Frank M Davis/Communist, socialist Saul Alinsky, terrorist Bill Ayres and anti-American Bed Wetter "Reverend" Wright, among others) why should we expect anything better than the mess he's promised.

Todd| 3.6.09 @ 11:36AM

I want to hear what Bob has to say about this. Actually I don't but I want to remind him how wrong he is. I remember him going on about what a great economic team Obama had assembled with Geithner and Summers and what we really have in a 3-ring circus where no one knows what the hell is going on. Geithner going after oil companies about taxes and global warming shows just how pathetic he is, nothing but a government hack who takes talking points from The White House to keep his job. So get off your damn high horse Bob, you don't know what the hell you are talking about.

Jim| 3.6.09 @ 11:41AM

Geithner got the Treasury job because Obama's mother worked for Peter Geithner when she lived in Indonesia. Peter is little Timmy's father, folks. PG and his bankster buddies are the ones who pushed Obama's grandmother up the banking ladder and who have engineered Obama's "rise from nowhere" to the WH. Keep your eye on the banksters, friends.

J David| 3.6.09 @ 11:53AM

It will always be "Bush's fault" as long as there is a lap-dog MSM propaganda/enforcement arm connected to our communist gov't. Much of the fault really does lie with "compassionate conservatives" for giving us a communist dictator, and as Michelle Malkin says, pre-socializing the economy for the Obamunist.

Emily from Grovers Corner| 3.6.09 @ 1:59PM

Do you remember the time when folks would criticize Bush and be reprimanded with “He’s the POTUS. You HAVE to respect the President” - that meaning, by virtue of holding the title (I refuse to say “office” since Bush never did an honest day’s work in or out of any office) of President of the United States, he/she was the living symbol of this country. . .remember when Dixie Chicks commented in London that they were “ashamed that Bush was from Texas” and the C/W crowd went nutso and sought to not only destroy their careers but their families and their lives? Why? Because Bush was the President and the POTUS was deserving of respect. . . so why is it okay NOW, March 6 2009, for people to say they want the POTUS to fail - why is it okay for so-called “respected” elected officials to say they agree with RL and they want this particular POTUS to fail? Why is no one screaming traitor in their faces? (John Galt) Why is no one demanding that these folks be brought up on charges of crimes against the state? Why is no one demanding that these folks go live somewhere else since they obviously don’t love America? Why is that? Any Republicans out there who would like to explain why it is wrong for the Dixie Chicks to say to a London audience that they are embarrassed by Bush, but that it’s okay for Rush Limbaugh to proclaim to his international audience that he wants Obama to fail?

ruth| 3.6.09 @ 2:00PM

Well, Obama is fast becoming our Laughing Stock. Clown-in-Chief.

CH| 3.6.09 @ 2:04PM

And is for Rush's statement. You really need to do your research and stop relying on the liberal talking points. Rush stated that if President Obama wanted to impose socialism then yes he wanted him to fail. He wants socialism to fail. It is very revealing that you think it is ok for the White House to go after a individual american. The last president to do this was Nixon and oh how the left howled when he did it. Here is the difference between the "far right" and the "far left."

Far Right 2009.....
"We want Socialism to fail because we believe in individual freedom and a limited form of government to lord over us."

Far Left 2005-2008
"We want the War in Iraq to fail and lots of American war deaths because it will increase our chance on taking back the white house in the 2008 election"

That is the Truth....and every thinking intelligent American knows it. All the other stuff is pure crapola.

A. Bunker| 3.7.09 @ 1:58PM

The liberal media is just trying to convince us that Republicans bear responsibility for what the government did when they were in charge of it.

What the liberal media doesn't want you to know is that liberals have secretly been running the show up there in Washington DC, and the bad economy is entirely their fault.

Bush didn't do anything wrong, ever. Neither did anyone who works for him or who is willing to say in public he supported him.

See, liberalism is a big hall full of smoke and daggers. It's like finding a needle in a haystack, keeping track of what these traitors will do next.

If you don't watch out, they always stab you in the back and then put a special tax on stabbed backs!

That's how they operate and you're a true fool if you watch the news and don't see it.

Every once in a while I ask myself, where did all these socialists come from, and how did they get to where they sorround me. Then I ask, maybe I'm a socialist, too, and just don't know it. That's a socialist works -- it sort of sneaks up on you.

So, "Kill the Empire Forever" you had better learn how to kneel and kiss America's private parts and learn to get used to it....the Army and the secret service Obama does not control.....what part of this truth don't you understand?

Kill the Empire forever| 3.7.09 @ 7:51PM

I am Daphne, the biggest, nastiest b!tch in the universe. Have you ever beheld a more vicious hater? I am also crazy and I frequently screw up the English language. I am hugely fat, am missing several teeth in front, and have terrible body odor. In short, I am a wretched socialist--please forgive me, most beautiful America.

Hey guys & gals, children & grownups...they're called "demo"crats because we're all being taken for a ride...to hell in a handbasket. One blogger thinks we're all queers & socialists and don't know it yet because it snuck up on us. Man talk about not knowing your ass from your elbow...we have landed in a bucket of sh@t.

Fred| 3.7.09 @ 10:48PM

Hey Hey Hey - more tax cheats - who could ever have seen that one coming. Next time IRS wants my money, I'll ask em to call Taxcheat Timmy - he got off so why can't I ?

One of the reasons Timmay ! got his job is because his dad used to supervise Blowbama's mom in Indonesia. Go check Wikipedia for the story.

Fred| 3.7.09 @ 10:54PM

I will also add - Obama is Hoover. Go read The Fourth Turning - this was all laid out in that book in 1997. Bush on the other hand, played the part of the incredibly corrupt Coolidge - history is repeating. We get another Great Depression, followed a few years later by a big war. 1780 1860 1940 they come 80 years apart - the length of a long human life - a saeculum.

Personally, I knew WHOEVER got to be Prez this time around was screwed, poor Obama is in so far over his head, I just have to feel sorry for the guy. He inherits the decisions of nisanely CORRUPT leadership going all the way back to the 1960's - and he is trying to bluff his way out of the deepest hole in history.

Jeremiah| 3.8.09 @ 3:09AM

Obama is the biggest hole in history. I don't feel sorry for that arrogant azzclown. Obama is the face of democrat corruption, Chicago style.

Skep41 | 3.8.09 @ 12:12PM

Si Se Puede! You right-wingers dont get it do you? Putting someone in charge of nationalizing the banks who knows something about banking defeats the whole ethic of the Obama Revolution. People looked at Obama's total lack of administrative experience and his sub-mediocre legislative career, read his cliche-packed ghost-written books and elected this clown as president. Shouldnt he be surrounded by people who dont make him feel inept or uncomfortable? The Treasury Secretary is no biggie. Its not like Geithner doesnt have titans like Brney Frank and Chris Dodd backstopping him over on the hill. John Kerry will help him set fair salary rates for bank employees. So chill. This is all Bush's fault anyway.

A. Bunker| 3.8.09 @ 2:37PM

Jeremiah is right. Obama really is the "biggest hole in history." Never has there been a more corrupt politician, ever, not in the entire history of our country.

In fact, Jeremiah doesn't go near far enough.

Obama is the most evil person that ever lived. If you don't see that, it's because you're a liberal traitor and should probably be shot.

Then again, the lib media has brainwashed all you all, and you don't even see Obama is a Nazi and Nanci Pelosi is Hitler. There probably stringing up the barbed wire on Alcatraz now to turn it into the first Obama concentration camp.

See, pretty soon they're going to start chuffing all the conservatives off to camps in cattle cars, these traitorous nazis.

Don't say we didn't warn you. They all think this country is so imperfect they're willing to pal around with terrorists now how does that make you feel, communist.

CH| 3.8.09 @ 3:17PM

Bunker, back away from the keyboard and take a deep breath. Surely your meds are within reach, right? Take several, and then take several more.

A. Bunker| 3.8.09 @ 3:30PM

CH --

Does "CH" stand for Communist Hottentot?

Or Crooked Huckster?

Either way, lib, you don't fool me, and you and the rest of the Obamabots had better get used to it. Your war against capitalism is a war against liberty and freedom, but you traitors aren't going to get away with it.

A. Bunker| 3.8.09 @ 3:33PM

See, a war against liberty is a war against freedom. Freedom is what the evil doers are fighting against, and so are we.

You have to have a willingness to make that decision going forward with your eyes open. If you don't, the terrorists win. Obama's a socialist, he's trying to institutionalize socialism.

Freedom isn't free. That means you have to pay for it. They don't just give it to you.

What Obama's trying to do now is destroy the country.

O'Stalin I would not bet money against your posting until I checked it out for sure. Is this not the silver lining, as we the opposition stand on the sidelines, and watch the dems at the wheel of all their brandy new, shiny cars driving around as we walk around with holes in our shoes ? I mean they are driving nowhere but to their own little demolition derby. Of course, they'll do alot of damage before it ends. If, it ever ends.

CH| 3.8.09 @ 5:47PM

I'm on your side, Bunker, and I ain't no stinkin' liberal/commie. It's just that your florid prose scares me a little; not sure if you're a liberal troll trying to stir up trouble.

dennisl59| 3.8.09 @ 10:21PM

Not Government for the People, it's Government vs. the People. (I've been out of work now for 5 months, since September 12th, when things really truly started to hit the fan (The Paulson Testimony). Sending resumes' and watching CNBC, etc.;59yo.wm.) IMHO, it's getting worse day by day, week by week. The Banking situation is totally, utterly and completely FUBAR, add GM and what do you have?.

Draw your own conclusions Citizens.

Gregor | 3.9.09 @ 12:01AM

Crazy people who are not reality based now ascribe an intention to the Obama team--that they wish to tank the economy and markets in order to ensure DEM party dreams and control for many years to come. But damn, if team Obama isn't doing a pretty good job of fanning those projected fears with this bizarre absence of rigor, and planning. At Treasury.

Matt| 3.9.09 @ 1:22AM

Obama's favorables are tanking, guess his fiscal strategy's not workin'.

jack| 3.9.09 @ 6:13AM

where are all the famous capitalists who supported this mad socialist tyrant? Buffett,Immelt,Cramer,Kass? Why isnt someone advising him? His Chief of Staff is a corrupt political hack who nothing of business or markets. His entire cabinet is people who have spent their entire life at the federal tat.
Obama has never had a real job. He has no idea how to manage people or lead. He spent so little time in the senate he has no idea how legislation is crafted. He also appears to have little knowledge of US History, world history or economics. He sure can read a nice speech. Hope the media and oprah are happy at the human misery they have unleashed on the US.
The scariest thing about this imbecile is his obsession with the past. His treatment of Great Britian and Brown last week was disgracefull. I thought we were moving beyond race? We trash our greatest ally because of their treatment of people of color from 100 years ago? Someone tell Obama they didnt treat the lower class or US colonies much better. Rev Wright is president.

WhoisRight| 3.9.09 @ 10:22AM

Jack! You are correct. In addition many of his previous advisors seem to be bailing out.

WhoisRight| 3.9.09 @ 10:31AM
