SCREENING OBAMA

One wouldn't know it from reading the Washington Post or New York Times, but some inside the White House don't think that President Barack Obama hit a home run with his first national press conference last week.

"It looked scripted beyond the scripted part, the speech," says one former communications adviser, who has been feeding notes and suggestions to the White House team and worked with them on the inauguration. "Every president has gone into one of these things knowing that there were some pre-arranged questions or journalists to be called on, but this one was pretty ham-handed."

To that end, he says, the White House is looking to install a small video or computer screen into the podium used by the president for press conferences and events in the White House. "It would make it easier for the comms guys to pass along information without being obvious about it," says the adviser.

The screen would indicate whom to call on, seat placement for journalists, pass along notes or points to hit, and so forth, says the adviser.

Using a screen is nothing new for Obama; almost nothing he said in supposedly unscripted townhall events during the presidential campaign was unscripted, down to many of the questions and the answers to those questions. Teleprompter screens at the events scrolled not only his opening remarks, but also statistics and information he could use to answer questions.

"It would be the same idea with the podium," says the adviser.

Obama had a teleprompter set up for his remarks last week, before taking questions, but the White House couldn't use the teleprompter for anything but the remarks, because the journalists were so close to the screens. Further complicating matters, teleprompter copy can't be easily updated in real time, in a setting like a White House press conference.

DOCTRINE AIR DEMOCRACY

Senior FCC staff working for acting Federal Communications Commissioner Michael Copps held meetings last week with policy and legislative advisers to House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman to discuss ways the committee can create openings for the FCC to put in place a form of the "Fairness Doctrine" without actually calling it such.

Waxman is also interested, say sources, in looking at how the Internet is being used for content and free speech purposes. "It's all about diversity in media," says a House Energy staffer, familiar with the meetings. "Does one radio station or one station group control four of the five most powerful outlets in one community? Do four stations in one region carry Rush Limbaugh, and nothing else during the same time slot? Does one heavily trafficked Internet site present one side of an issue and not link to sites that present alternative views? These are some of the questions the chairman is thinking about right now, and we are going to have an FCC that will finally have the people in place to answer them."

Copps will remain acting chairman of the FCC until President Obama's nominee, Julius Genachowski, is confirmed, and Copps has been told by the White House not create "problems" for the incoming chairman by committing to issues or policy development before the Obama pick arrives.

But Copps has been a supporter of putting in place policies that would allow the federal government to have greater oversight over the content that TV and radio stations broadcast to the public, and both the FCC and Waxman are looking to licensing and renewal of licensing as a means of enforcing "Fairness Doctrine" type policies without actually using the hot-button term "Fairness Doctrine."

One idea Waxman's committee staff is looking at is a congressionally mandated policy that would require all TV and radio stations to have in place "advisory boards" that would act as watchdogs to ensure "community needs and opinions" are given fair treatment. Reports from those advisory boards would be used for license renewals and summaries would be reviewed at least annually by FCC staff.

Have we grown so tired of freedom that we will line up and march of the cliff together in defeat of defending our First Amendments rights? Or will we stand up and pick up the fight that our ancestors have so many times before in the face of tyrannical governments? Just because this is the United States of America doesn't make us immune from an authoritarian government, and it's bureaucrats.
How many democracies have fallen by the wayside in favor of socialist regimes most notably the Southern Hemisphere.
If Americans do not stop this headlong rush into the socialist abyss we may not have the strength to fend off the crushing and suffocating weight of a socialist government.
It is becoming obvious that many Americans no longer can sit on the fence and just merely observe this epic battle that is forming with those who wish to turn over their freedom for security, and those who stand up to embrace the fresh sweet air of freedom only to be told to sit down because their papers are not in order.
The founders of this Country gave the tools to defend ourselves from those who wish to enslave us with silence, but they couldn't instill the will to fight it, that is up to us, on whether or not we have to will to use those tools to defend our God given rights as Americans..

Deborah| 2.16.09 @ 7:26AM

The Democrats want to cement their power. Like I've said a bunch of times since Obama first came on the scene, it's obvious that these few words are really his mantra: Do as I say. Don't question. Unity by force.

I'm ready to get my pitchfork and march to Washington to defend free speech. If Democrats plan to restrict the speech of talk radio -- and by that conservative speech -- then I believe they will be digging their own grave. God help us if they succeed. Shall we then only be able to tell the truth to each other in a whisper in our bathrooms like they did in East Germany and the Soviet Union? Rent the movie "The Lives of Others." That's our future if Democrats get their way.

webgames| 10.10.09 @ 12:39PM

We need to step back and look at where all of the whining about the so-called "Fairness Doctrine" is coming from. It is not coming from the Democrats at all, it is coming from the Right-wing media

As the rapid rush to total gov't control continues one has to wonder where the gulags for thought and speech control will be setup.

Terry O'Donnell| 2.16.09 @ 7:57AM

How many have had their computers crash because of viruses or Trojans loaded when we accidentally arrive at the 'wrong' web site or have had our teenagers do the same thing? How much pornography is available on the Internet?
Are these questions that may be addressed by the FCC or Henry Waxman? Absolutely not! There are web sites that broadcast conservative, libertarian or Republican thoughts that need to be eradicated. The fact that people want to hear Rush Limbaugh a great deal more than that idiot Chris Matthews only indicates they've been brainwashed . . . but in the wrong way. Henry Waxman to the rescue! Matthews, Maddow et. al. need to be heard!
We'll whisper if need be. We'll seek others with open minds and we'll find each other. Neither Henry Waxman nor any other liberal will stop us.

On a day when Hugo Chavez is celebrating, and the demented bunch from the left about to employ their UNfairness Doctrine, I have added "ammunition" to my shopping list - before Eric Holder gets around to rationing/labeling each cartridge.
This is sick, nothing less. And, to witness we earners and producers being outnumberd by those demanding "Something-for-Nothing" is further nauseating. The neo-Marxists have taken over, and our once-great country is being flushed down the toilet. Orwellian indeed.

I used to receive the periodic DNC newsletter email from Howard Dean (...keep your enemies closer.) and one last fall leading up to the election particularly caught my eye.

Dean claimed the party was taking the proper actions to not only assure a win in November, but to guarantee power for long into the future.

Knowing the underhanded leanings of the democrats I wondered what the future held in store.

So far, from the new 'president' we have seen consistent moves to pursue more power rather than care about the future of this great nation.

We shouldn't be surprised. We should be appalled.

Jonah Goldberg needs to put out an updated edition of LIBERAL FASCISM. When Goldberg wrote it, it looked like Hillary was going to be the Democratic candidate, and Obama only got one or two mentions. But it looks like the Annointed One, his thugocracy and his adorers are going to rate an entire chapter.

The publisher should market it as the new "Yes, We Can!" edition, with the adversting slogan: "Now. More Than Ever."

The Democrats don't seem to understand that overreaching will end their majority sooner than later. One vote in the House with a Republican majority will end all funding for the FCC. Without funding, it is powerless. If the FCC orders US Marshalls to shut down conservative radio, then the US Marshalls are defunded with one vote.

Don't think it can't happen. I love it when leftists overrreach. The payback will be awful.

One more thing regarding your "we won" comment. Recall the following and heed:

"For over a thousand years Roman conquerors returning from the wars enjoyed the honor of triumph, a tumultuous parade. In the procession came trumpeteers, musicians and strange animals from conquered territories, together with carts laden with treasure and captured armaments. The conquerors rode in a triumphal chariot, the dazed prisoners walking in chains before him. Sometimes his children robed in white stood with him in the chariot or rode the trace horses. A slave stood behind the conqueror holding a golden crown and whispering in his ear a warning: that all glory is fleeting."

Don't just whine that you'll lose your favorite drug addicted radio host counter the arguments. Slice up radio spectrum into monopolies severely underuses the resource. What is this "we won" nonsense. We have a constitution in this country and a process that ensures the preservation of institutions without regard to who is in power.
Free speech exists so the people can hear information they need to make their decisions for self-rule.
Rush Limbaugh and conservative talk radio is chosen by the people through advertising dollars as a source of their information.
Authoritarian elitists like Waxman want to decide what we should listen to and therefore want to interfere with the decision making process required for democratic self-rule.

I think he's suggesting a switch to digital radio, which would break up "radio monopolies" (whatever that means) -- but that doesn't solve his basic problem: left-wing progressive radio is an unpopular format. Period.

Conservative talk radio exists because there is a market for it. It comes back to ratings and share of audience. Advertisers buy radio spots based on RATINGS. It's not about wavelength or spectrum.
It's a matter of product.

Market forces. Supply and Demand.
Liberals don't get it, and they can't compete so their answer is government intervention to silence the opposing voices.

@GOP08_DOA

Meister| 2.16.09 @ 3:11PM

We need to step back and look at where all of the whining about the so-called "Fairness Doctrine" is coming from. It is not coming from the Democrats at all, it is coming from the Right-wing media as yet another distraction, and another way for Hannity, Limbaugh, O'Reily, Hewitt, Weiner/Savage, Barnes, Kristol, Hume, Levin, Coulter, Ingrahm, and many many more. You need to stop falling for the Right-wing media's constantly playing the victim when there is NO liberal or left-wing media to counter their biases. There is only far right media. Please open your eyes.

Joanne600| 2.16.09 @ 3:28PM

Yes, Meister. I suppose Chris Matthews is a moderate.

corporate drone| 2.16.09 @ 3:35PM

@Meister..."there is NO liberal or left-wing media"

are you joking or just blind?

You can step back as far you'd like, but i like the view up close. Of course the Democrats aren't "whining" about the Fairness Doctrine! They are the ones who want to revisit it for the sole purpose of eliminating talk radio.

Pop quiz:
Would you consider it "whining" if Democrats resisted Republican efforts to mandate the inclusion of conservative viewpoints on NPR or Air America? How about mandating alternate viewpoints on Huffpo or Daily Kos?

Would that be whining, or would that be the legitimate opposition of bad policy?

Why limit this to just radio? Let's include newspapers and websites. Surely, you won't mind. Because then you'd just be whining, right?

I disagree with the things you say, but I'll defend -- to the death -- your right to say them. Why won't the liberals do the same?

Dustoff| 2.16.09 @ 3:35PM

Well one thing is for sure. The dem's better hope & pray (ok they don't pray) but if by 2010 jobs don't return like they have said, then look for changes in the Senate.

Woodard Nunis| 2.16.09 @ 3:36PM

Meister pens yet another laugh track from the informed side of the debate. Of course there is no left wing media; CNN, NBC, CBS, ABC, MSNBC, Air America, NPR etc. are just moderate and the only media with any bias whatsoever are FOX, Limbaugh, Ingraham, Hannity, etc. Yet another howler from the confederation of dunces who epitomize hope and change. Have you returned your .50 cent pieces with the messiah's sticker plastered on them yet?

Teleprompter Messiah| 2.16.09 @ 3:38PM

Meister: There is a difference between opinion media and news media. There is a right opinion media but with the exception of Fox, no right news media. Your comment is inane because who counters their bias. If the fairness doctrine means that you must split the newsroom between conservatives and liberals and they both get equal time, I'm for it.

skep41| 2.16.09 @ 3:38PM

I have the eternal shame of living in Warthog Waxman's exquisitely gerrymandered Congressional District. Old Truffle-Snout has become so used to running unopposed he imagines that that is the normal state of affairs. But sadly I have to report that the people who flock to vote for this fascist thug are as stupid and mendacious as he is. There is nothing dumber than an Ivy-League New Age Ex-Hippie earning a seven-figure income, unless its a Jewish Senior citizen who votes for the Whack-man because he pretends he doesnt agree with the politically correct view that Israel should be turned over to Hamas. Until the voters wise up, and once these creeps get their hands on the alternative media thats going to be a lot harder to accomplish, there will never be any improvement.

That wingnut Henry Waxman, I always wanted to stick my fingers up his nose and take him bowling, he's a smooth-lying SOB like OhBummer.

The Democrats think they can get away with hijacking the First Amendment in the name of "fairness" ---- but they remind me of the First American Revolution. We need a Second American Revolution to deal with these people who want to shut us up. I think that we need to shut them up! ~:

Angelo Z| 2.16.09 @ 4:06PM

This will be the mother of all free speech battle, Waxman et others have no idea what they are in for. Notice that Rush has said he is not worried about the fairness doctrine, while other radio personalities have said very little. I think that they are gearing up for a tremendous fight. It is tought that conservative radio talk show hosts reach about 75million listeners a week.

Anthony| 2.16.09 @ 4:15PM

Teleprompter Messiah: Good try, but Meister is one of the walking, talking, living dead, as they wander around the country, zombie like, with their straight face mantra that there is only far right media, like Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw, Charlie Gibson, KakakakaKatie, Gwen (I love Obama, please buy my book) Ifil, oh, and NPR's own Mr. Fairness, Bill Moyers.
Hey zombie; conservative media are caterwauling about the F. D. because not a day goes by when some fascist, disguised as a Democrat member of congress, doesn't call for the silencing of talk radio. And that includes that fat toad, former president and cigar smoker extraordinaire, Billious Clinton.

Interloper| 2.16.09 @ 4:29PM

@interloper

Feh. Warning ignored.
If you don't like what you hear on the radio, why not change the dial?

Meister| 2.16.09 @ 4:53PM

Let's get a few facts straight here. CNN, ABC, NBC, MSNBC, CBS etc are only brand names. For example TimeWarnerAOL owns CNN, and TimeWarnerAOL is not liberal in any way. NBC and MSNBC are owned by General Electric (GE). GE is a large defense contractor and again, is not liberal in any way. Disney owns ABC etc etc. You have a media oligolpoly which the Republican's allowed thru deregulation. That is where you need to focus your efforts. No Democrat has mentioned anything about getting rid of right-wing radio, so I don't know where you are getting that, probably from right-wing radio themselves since they really dont worry about telling the truth.

DSAMMIS| 2.16.09 @ 4:56PM

A frequent reference in these comments, to many issues is, "Pitchforks" Mine is currently bolted to my mailbox for all to see. Most people so far don't get the connection, but it will become clear by July 14

ruth| 2.16.09 @ 5:08PM

GE, TimeWarnerAOL and Disney are all leftwing corporations; only an idiot or a liar would claim otherwise. GE did business with Iran even while Iran was smuggling explosives into Iraq that killed many of our soldiers. Immelt (GE CEO) is a traitor and is responsible for GE's freefall in the stock market.

Tim| 2.16.09 @ 5:11PM

Interloper,

When the freedom Lovin Americans are finished correcting the mistake they just made it is you and people like you that will be looking to hide under the rug and look over your shoulder for fear that the Conservative Boogy man is about to clean your clock once and for all.

ruth| 2.16.09 @ 5:14PM

First the liberal propagandists were saying that no demo was talking about the (Un)fairness Doctrine, now that the the (Un)fairness Doctrine is all over the news, they're saying that no demo is talking about shutting down Conservative Talk Radio. What's next? Drip, drip, drip.

ruth| 2.16.09 @ 5:19PM

Meister, consider our focus firmly planted on you and other liberal propagandists. We don't need any friggin' BS liberal minders. We already know what's going on.

corporate drone| 2.16.09 @ 5:23PM

Meister said: "No Democrat has mentioned anything about getting rid of right-wing radio"

Q. What do you think the result of a new fairness doctrine will be? How will you define fairness?

DaveS| 2.16.09 @ 5:28PM

I've been carelessly reading Interloper comments for months, and there is nothing memorable besides the name-calling and word count. Like I've told Red Phillips: sit down, take a break, have a drink - or, better yet, a cigar (since you seem to be in celebratory mood.)

ruth| 2.16.09 @ 5:35PM

Exactly, corporate drone, how will the liberals define fairness? Who the hell are they and who gave them this power? Doesn't sound very democratic to me.

NHDissident| 2.16.09 @ 5:59PM

Interloper

Why don't you take the lead and fade into oblivion.

S.L. Toddard| 2.16.09 @ 6:01PM

Right on Lady Ruth, but it sounds democrat. There must be a new dealer in Malibu, all crackheads are here this evening.

Savy Media| 2.16.09 @ 6:20PM

Just a note about "interloper". Soon you will see his kind cloned using the Obama database (built with google and ofreign money) and aimed at talk radio and right wing internet. The move to take over is in place. Who will stand and fight. They passed the pork-us bill and will take our savings, and soon our free speech. Who will fight these people? Who will target and eliminate them. The fight is on.

tarpon| 2.16.09 @ 6:23PM

One thing for sure, tyranny cannot coexist with free speech. As Madison stated --- “Oppressors can tyrannize only when they achieve a standing army, an enslaved press, and a disarmed populace.” — James Madison

We are staring Fascism in the face, will we respond.

Savy Media| 2.16.09 @ 6:24PM

Angelo Z....
Don't be so comfortable in your numbers. They mean nothing when the Alinskyites known as Obama have control of the reigns of power. Those numbers mean nothing and will be eroded down thru control by the State. Get ready to fight these people on all fronts. We must go after them.

tonypal| 2.16.09 @ 6:46PM

Interloper:

I love your commentary because you are the very embodiment of everything that you claim to oppose, hatred and intolerance of opposing viewpoints. I also get a kick out of you warning us that we will be shut down. Why are you so afraid of debate? If you're so confident of your positions, then you should revel in the opportunity to argue with us. Instead, you desire to shut us up. Again, why so fearful of putting your thoughts and ideas up against ours?

Also, why don't you try debating instead of engaging in name calling. I used to do the name calling thing, but then I turned 10. So grow up and debate and refute opposing viewpoints using intellect, not vitriole.

Tailgunner| 2.16.09 @ 6:46PM

Call it what it is...state repression, by intimidation and force, of political opposition...especially conservative.

This is something you'd think was happening in some banana third world peoples' republic somewhere in Central America or West Africa.
But no...it's coming to a talk show near you.

Waxman and other Democrats know the FCC rules they want to change will be so vague and open to political interpretation that radio stations will drop all controversial programming...just as it was the last time the 'Fairness Doctrine' was in place.

The Bill of Rights is an obstacle for Democrats.

Come on, people, only a police state does this kind of stuff.

Deny 1st, feel the 2nd.

Bring it, Henry.

TJS| 2.16.09 @ 7:58PM

CountryFirst,
Plenty of intelligent, constructive thoughts here though you don't have any apparently. It is not fantasy moron when Waxman and his lib cronies are busy plotting how to shut down talk radio and all broadcasted criticism of Obama and idiots like Pelosi and Reid. I dare those pricks to try it, they will be exposed as the free speech haters they are. This is America, not Venezuela.

Nohbody| 2.16.09 @ 7:59PM

In regards to "Democrats aren't complaining about the [un]Fairness Doctrine":

They were when it was _Nixon_ who was using it against left-wing media, back in the 1970s when it first reared its ugly head.

So, why is it bad when a Republican uses it, but good when Democrats do? Please remember that replies to the effect of "you're a big poopyhead" is not an answer to the question.

Nohbody| 2.16.09 @ 8:02PM

Correction: "... _are_ not an answer".

Stupid fat-fingering...

Joanne600| 2.16.09 @ 8:02PM

Poor Countryfirst just gave us the best the left has to offer in terms of "intelligent, constructive thought" by reaching for the playbook and coming up with ridicule and name calling. Have pit, it's the best they can do. Intelligent discourse simply isn't in the playbook. Ditto refuting facts.

As to earlier comments about GE, TimeWarner and Disney not being liberal companies, clearly the commenter doesn't know anything about Jeffrey Immelt, Summer Redstone or Michael Eisner. As far as GE being a defense contractor, that is only one of the myriad businesses they are in. They also have a division that manufactures windmills for windfarms which hardly comes under the definition of a conservative business.

No Democrat has mentioned getting rid of right wing talk radio? Did you not read the article that you have been posting on all day? Henry Waxman clearly stated his intent to regulate not only talk radio, but the Internet.

Lets not kid ourselves,
If Obama and the Dems could, they would run this country like Hugo Chavez.

It is clear for all of us to see and anyone that even tries to defend Obama and the Democrats are living in a dream world or they are socialists lusting for power themselves.

These people want to take free speech away period. No ands ifs or Butts.

The Labor unions are merging all locals into huge mega local unions in order to eliminate the rank and file members the right to vote in a union election.

The unions shove contracts down the throats of their members without the members ever having a chance to read them first.

Just like this stimulous bill in congress.

We now find out that Burris lied and also was willing to pay for his Obama Illinois seat in the senate.

It goes on and on.
These guys are hoods, crooks, villans and thugs.

We have got to stop treating Obama with silk gloves because he is black and start treating him for what he is.....

A socialist pig......with strong ties to America's Haters and a willingness to squash free speech.

That's Treason in my book.and Treason is...punishable by death...and if the Liberals don't like that kind of talk they can go pound sand or go suck on a bong.

If there is anyone reading this blog who is serious about beating the Dems at their own game, go to our website and get behind our effort to allow broadcasters the ability to provide radio listeners the content they want.

We need everyone's help. The Fairness Doctrine is coming. The Dems want this and it can't be stopped. While the layers and lobbyists are fighting the FCC in the courts, we have a plan to allow broadcasters to meet the demands of the Fairness Doctrine and keep their licenses.

Tell every person you know who loves Free Speech on the radio airwaves about our organization. Thank you.

TJK| 2.17.09 @ 9:36PM

I have a feeling that any attempt to revive the Fairness Doctrine, or whatever clothing they choose to clothe the wolf in, will be challenged in court, and probably defeated. It's clearly censorship, which the Supreme Court has repeatedly prevented. And, not to bring Walter Sobchak into this, but the Supreme Court has also rejected prior restraint, which this clearly is. One of the problems I see, though, is there are no term limits for Congress. So, while we don't have a monarchy in the Executive branch, we have something worse in the Legislative branch: an oligarchy. And since our fearless in Congress have obviously won the war on terror, the war on poverty, the war on drugs, and any other wars they have chosen to fight head on, what else is there for them to do but to declare war on free thought?

By the way, this is my first post here. I am a conservative in Chicago. Talk about being living each day in the heart of the dragon... don't even get me started on the mess we are in. Again, term limits. The lemmings in this town just blindly re-elect the same yutzes year after year, and then are surprised when another governor gets arrested.

TJK,

Welcome nad give my best to Burris the newest Chicago Crook to be exposed.

I agree with you on the Fairness Doctrine...that the Supreme Court will knock it down unless Obama appoints a Liberal Judge to a current conservative seat. Ginsburg and Powell are Libs anyway no big deal but if Scalia kicks the bucket or even middle of the roader kennedy we got problems.

These guys have to hang on until Obama is kicked out of office in 2012.

So, apparently today Obama is saying he opposes any revival of the Fairness Doctrine. Which basically means we're screwed, since he hasn't remembered any of the things he said he would or wouldn't do (like not appointing lobbyists to his cabinet, not surrounding himself with Washington insiders, etc.). We have got to start moving past the whole conservative/liberal, right/left, Rep/Dem divide and start to realize that it's a major part of what's enabling our freedoms to be stripped away and our rights suspended. Divide and conquer, if we all fight amongst ourselves over every issue that we're faced with it becomes a lot less effective to defend ourselves. We aren't all in agreement on everything, that's part of what makes America great, but we need to come together enough to protect our nation (and others) from domination by global bankers. First the freedom of speech will go, then we'll add more gun restrictions, the process is not new to anyone. If we don't get together on this as citizens beyond our differences we're going to have much less of a chance of recovering as a nation.
