The bigger than big sports news over the weekend was the Cleveland Cavaliers delivering a miracle in Oakland, becoming the first team to come back from a 3-1 deficit to win the NBA championship. But there was a small sports vignette worth noting on Friday that I’ve just caught up with.
Los Angeles Dodgers hall of fame announcer Vin Scully will talk about many things during a game, but almost never politics in any form. He diverted a little from this wise policy Friday night during a game against the Milwaukee Brewers in Dodger Stadium.
“Socialism, failing to work — as it always does — this time in Venezuela,” the mellifluous one said. Listen to it here. Guess he didn’t vote for Bernie in the California primary.
Vin’s brief takedown of socialism wasn’t entirely gratuitous or out of the blue. The Brewers batter at the time was Hernan Perez, who hails from Villa de Cura, Venezuela.
