Lots of organizations have misleading names, chosen to hide or to perfume what the outfit actually does. Planned Parenthood is just one example. Planned Non-Parenthood would be a more honest title, as the outfit is first and foremost about promoting and facilitating abortion. Another gross misnomer is the American Civil Liberties Union.
For nearly a century the ACLU has marketed itself as a nonpartisan defender of our constitutional freedoms. But the reality has been very different. With few exceptions, liberty in America, according to the ACLU, has been equated with whatever the leftist agenda has been at the moment. This bunch even found a way to twist destruction of unborn children into a civil liberty. The ACLU over and over has gone to the matt for abortion, while the wholesale attack on freedom of speech in America has drawn hardly a peep from them. Everything but leftist liberty leaves this bunch cold. They’re just another leftist pressure group, no more and no less.
Alert Americanos mostly see through this scam. There are a few remaining, who because they are left ideologues or have just led sheltered lives, take the ACLU for what it claims to be. This shouldn’t surprise. Millions believe in astrology. Some are convinced the moon landings never took place. Heck, and I’m going out on a limb here, for all I know an extensive search might uncover one or two shut-ins who believe the United States Senate is the world’s greatest deliberative body.
The ACLU’s latest stunt should shake the faith of the tiny remnant who still believe the ACLU’s non-partisan boilerplate. The outfit that claims to have never supported or opposed anyone or any party for public office (wink, wink) is spending more than a million dollars on television ads opposing the confirmation of Brett Kavanaughto the U.S. Supreme Court. The reason? On the basis of some incredibly shaky and uncorroborated accusations, the champions of liberty have concluded that Kavanaugh is a sexual predator on the order of Bill Clinton, Harvey Weinstein, Charley Rose, Matt Lauer, Bill Cosby, and other scofflaws who have been much more credibly charged with sexual misconduct. The fact that Kavanaugh’s adult life, to every appearance, has been pure as the driven snow seems to count for nothing with the freedom fanatics at the ACLU.
It’s clearly a time for a name change at the ACLU. They can keep the initials. Nothing wrong with these. But for anyone paying attention, ACLU clearly stands for the American Committed Leftist Union.
