The Exorcism of Obamacare From the Body Politic

If you were astonished by the egregious antics of congressional Democrats during the recent procedural votes that started Obamacare down the path to perdition, you should reread The Exorcist, in which William Peter Blatty vividly describes just such head spinning, vomit-spewing, and gratuitous execration. This isn’t the last time you’ll see the Democrats reenacting the behavior of Blatty’s most memorable character. Indeed, had he lived to see their grotesque performance, he might have suggested that the Democrats are controlled by an entity even more diabolical than the demon that possessed Regan MacNeil — an abortion lobby that forbids compromise on Obamacare.

Blatty, who passed away last week, was a pro-life Catholic whose aversion to Obamacare’s contraception mandate was such that he threatened to sue his alma mater, Georgetown University, for inviting former HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to speak at its 2012 commencement. He had long been critical of Georgetown for ignoring Catholic doctrine. But, as Fox News reported,

The “last straw” was the university allowing students to invite Sebelius, considering that she was instrumental in helping President Obama draft health care reform that includes a mandate for some religious institutions to offer insurance to cover employees’ birth-control costs, said Blatty.

Blatty did live long enough to see Sebelius get the boot, but the industry still possesses the Democratic Party body and soul. And its voice will be heard in all its vitriolic malevolence when Tom Price goes to Capitol Hill for the first round of his confirmation hearings the day after tomorrow. The “reproductive rights” mafia will pull out all the stops to prevent Price from being confirmed as the Secretary of Health and Human Services. Never mind that he would be the first actual physician to lead HHS in nearly a generation, is well-known for his policy expertise, and has the support of the health care industry. Tom Price bears the mark of Cain — like Blatty, he is guilty of being pro-life.

A pro-life HHS secretary is the abortion industry’s worst nightmare. And its collective response to his nomination has reflected that reality. Sadly, it has consisted largely of fact-free attacks on Price like this one from NARAL Pro-Choice America:

Tom Price is someone who has made clear throughout his career that he does not trust women to make our own decisions about our health care. Instead, he wants to punish us for the choices we make for our bodies, our futures, and our families. In Congress, Tom Price cosponsored some of the most offensive anti-choice legislation on record.

Much of this invective has been prompted by Price’s vote in favor of legislation to defund the Planned Parenthood abortion factory and purveyor of organs cut from dead infants. In addition to voting for the bill, Price eloquently explained why: “These actions cross a moral line beyond comprehension. The revealing picture is of a supported routine for abortion practices that result in the harvesting and sale of baby parts, some of which are secured in barbaric processes… I voted to end taxpayer funding for the organization responsible.” Thus, Price’s standing with the pro-life movement is typified by this statement from the Susan B. Anthony List when his nomination was announced:

Representative Tom Price is an excellent choice for Secretary of Health and Human Services. He has a 100 percent pro-life record and is well positioned to champion truly comprehensive health care.… As HHS Secretary, he will play a key role in developing a robust health care reform proposal that protects life and consciences, while promoting options for low-income individuals and families.

In other words, Tom Price is the exorcist who will banish many of Obamacare’s worst provisions to outer darkness. In fact, as the Secretary of Health and Human Services, he will possess the power to make all manner of changes to the reviled “reform” law without waiting for Congress to pass legislation. He will, for example, have the authority to kill the notorious contraception mandate that William Peter Blatty, like so many other Americans of faith, found so offensive. The mandate is found nowhere in the text of the “Affordable Care Act.” It is an HHS rule concocted by Kathleen Sebelius and her minions before they got down to the serious business of botching the Obamacare rollout.

This power to deep-six the contraception mandate is obviously another reason the abortion lobby is gunning for Price. But neither pro-abortion groups nor the media who support them can coherently explain why he is a bad nominee. Instead, they make weird charges such as this one reported by National Review:

The senior business editor for NPR decided this morning that Congressman Tom Price’s failure to clap during President Obama’s announcement of a renewed “war on cancer” means that Price is, in fact, a fan of cancer: “When it comes to clapping at #SOTU, @RepTomPrice is resolute: one of the few who did not applaud the idea of curing cancer.”

This is just nuts.

Indeed, it’s almost as nuts as supporting the perversely named “Affordable Care Act,” one of the worst pieces of legislation ever enacted by Congress. This is why we need Tom Price at HHS. He is one of the few people in the nation qualified to lead the exorcism of Obamacare from our body of laws. The Democrats and their masters in the abortion industry should get out of his way and let him do it. This would be good for the nation as a whole and a fitting tribute to the memory of William Peter Blatty.
